History of Robotics

Julian Hernandez Period 3

HISTORY
- Modern robotics was started out in the Industrial Revolution. - Better mechanics made it possible to create this type of machinery. - Small compact motors were needed and this revolution allowed these motors to be created.

HISTORY
- The first robots were mainly used for industrial purposes - These machines did a lot of different tasks so human hands were not needed. - In the 1960s artificial intelligence robots started being created.

HISTORY
- The first industrial robot created worked in General Motors in 1961 - The Rancho arm was created to help handicapped patients in the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital

HISTORY
- Logic based programming language was created in 1973 (PROLOG)
- This programming language was important for artificial intelligence

ROBONAUT
- since it is dangerous for humans to go to space, NASA created the robonaut - Range of motion and task capabilities that of a human astronaut

SCARA ROBOTS
- SCARA robots are designed by an American company, Adept Technology - Works on a conveyor belt moving items at a very high speed - Pick and Place robot

CYLINDRICAL ROBOT
- arms form a cylindrical coordinate system - spot welding - assembly operations

Electric Motors
- electrical motors are used by mostly all robots - DC motors in portable robots and AC motors in industrial robots - these are in lighter loaded systems and the predominant form is rotational

Actuation
- actuators is like the muscles of robots - parts convert stored energy into movement - Modern actuators are powered by electricity, chemicals or compressed air

AIR Muscles
- linear actuator that produces motion in a straight line - air muscles have little stiction and a fast response - potential for high frequency cycling

MUSCLE WIRES
- thin wires made of nickel-titanium wire alloy called nitinol - Shape memory alloy that works with different temperatures - different forms or phases

VISION
- Computer vision is science technology - sensors use solid-state physics - some image sensors require quantum mechanics - robot eyes focus on particular objects just how the human eyes do

MANIPULATION
- Hands on robots are referred to as end effectors
- the arm is referred to as the manipulator
- able to pick up, destroyor modify an object

SNAKING ROBOTS
- mimic real snake moves - Navigate through tight spaces - Some used to search for people in collapsed buildings as the Japanese did with the ACM-R5 robot - land and water
