ALLIGATIONS

1. Aw (Weighted Average) = [(n1A1 + n2A2 + n3A3 + + nkAk) / (n1 + n2 + n3 . + nk)] 2. Graphical representation of Alligation:
A1 A2

Aw

A2 - Aw n1

Aw A1 n2

Quantity ratio = n1 / n 2

WORK

1. If A does a work in a days, then in one day A does 1/a of the work.
If B does the same work in b days, then in one day B does 1/b of the work. Then, in one day, A and B together, do 1/a + 1/b of the work or (a + b ) / a b. No. of days reqd. to complete the work = 1/ [(a + b ) / a b] = ab / (a+b)

2. Alternative Approach:
If A does a work in a days, then in one day A does 100/a % of the work. If B does the same work in b days, then in one day B does 100/b % of the work. Then, in one day, if A and B work together, then their combined work is, 100/a %+ 100/b % or (a + b ) / a b x 100 %

TIME, SPEED & DISTANCE

1) Distance = Speed x Time 2) Conversion Km/hr to mtr/sec Multiply by 5/18; mtr/sec to Km/hr Multiply by 18/5 3) Relative speed Opposite direction => S1 + S2 Same direction => S1 S2 4) Average speed = Total distance / total time Sn = 2 S1 S2 / ( S1 + S2)

5) Trains: a) Train Crossing a stationary object without

length St x t = Lt
b) Train Crossing a stationary object with

length St x t = Lt + Lo
c) Train Crossing a moving object in opposite direction (St + So) x t = Lt

d) Train Crossing a moving object

without length in same direction

(St - So) x t = Lt

e) Train Crossing a moving object with

length in same direction (St - So) x t = Lt + Lo f) Train Crossing a moving object with length in opposite direction (St + So) x t = Lt+ Lo

6) Boats & Streams:

Up stream Speed = SB SS
Down stream Speed = SB + SS

SB - Speed of Boat
SS- Speed of Stream

CLOCKS

1. Every minute, the minute hand travels 360 / 60 = 6 or through 60 divisions in 1 hour. 2. Every minute, the hour hand travels 30 / 60 = 0.5 or through 5 divisions in one hour. 3. Relative speed between the hour hand & the minute hand is 6 0.5 = 5.5 or 55 divisions in one hour i.e. 11 / 12 divisions.

4. The minute hand and the hour hand are

twice at right angles every hour, but in 12 hours they are at right angles only 22 times. 5. The hands of a clock coincide every hour, but in 24 hours they coincide only 22 times.

6. The time interval between the coincidences of the hands in consecutive hours is 60 / (11 /12) i.e. 65 & 5 / 11 mts. 7. The hands of a clock are in a straight line once every hour.

CALENDARS

1. Every ordinary year has 52 weeks & 1 odd day. 2. Every Leap Year has 52 weeks & 2

odd days.
3. Every 100th, 200th & 300th years after

every 400 years are ordinary years.

i.e. 1700th, 1800th & 1900th years

were ordinary years.

4. Every 400th year is a Leap Year

i.e. 1200th, 1600th & 2000th years

were Leap years. 5. First January 0001 A.D. was a Monday.
