Mrs.

Phillips Monday Memo

Jan. 13-16, 2014

Character Word: Initiative is doing what is needed without someone telling you.

A Peek at Our Week:

Reading: We will be reviewing comprehension skills through an author study of Patricia Polaccos books. I will continue assessing students reading progress. Math: We will continue learning how to identify and generate fact families. We will also learn about the equal sign and how to balance equations. Writing: We will continue to work on mastering the how-to paragraph. Science/Social Studies: We will be learning about how light and sound are made and how they travel.

Reminders:
Beginning January 14, Good News Club will meet at EWE from 2:30-4:00 pm. Parents will need to pick their children up from the back car circle at 4:00 pm. If you would like to receive classroom news text messages, please text the code @b1e7b to 864-3495032. Please be sure to send any transportation changes to school in writing. If you have had any information changes (phone number, address, email, etc.) please let me know as soon as possible so I can update the information.

Sound Check:
We will continue learning how to identify and use prefixes at the beginning of a word. There will be no challenge words this week due to the winter reading & writing assessments being completed.

Upcoming Changes:
Next week, students will become responsible for reading their reading assessments independently. In order to prepare for more independent reading, the students will be doing cold reads in class. We will also add a dictation sentence to the spelling test, making the weekly test include 2 sentences. Students will work on subtraction for Rocket Math.

Sight Words and Family Words: Sight words:

box, there, them, when, dog (all 5 words will be on the spelling test)

Homework Help:
We will be focusing more on finding evidence in a text. At school, we will practice this skill through cold reads. The students read a text independently and answer questions about the text. I will be teaching the students how to highlight the word(s) as evidence from the text. As you read at home, please consider asking your child questions and having them go back to the text and show you their evidence.

Upcoming Events:
1/13: SIC meeting (11:30) 1/14: Good News Club at EWE 1/16: End of 2nd quarter 1/17, 1/20: No School 1/23: Report cards go home

Family words:
dear, fear, gear, hear, near, rear, spear, tear, year (5 of the family words will be on the spelling test)

Career Week is coming January 27-31! Parent Participation Needed! Would you like to come discuss your job in our classroom? Contact me if you are interested. Due to time constraints talks are limited to 10-15 minutes.
