Power Of Film For
Human Rights
Every year since 2001, a group of
committed Amnesty International
volunteers has put on a human
rights flm festival in Nelson. Tis
years ofering will take place on
Friday, January 31 and Saturday,
February 1 at the Shambhala Music
and Performance Hall, Tenth Street
Campus of Selkirk College.
Tis 14th annual festival con-
tinues the tradition of showcas-
ing documentary flms for West
Kootenay residents that are in-
formative and thought provok-
ing, and highlight a wide range
of human rights themes and
issues, crossing cultures, lan-
guages, and even time itself.
Te Friday evening showing,
beginning at 7 pm, features two
flms that highlight the resili-
ence, courage and strength of
people working to protect hu-
man rights. Forbidden Voices
profles three women bloggers,
not frightened by dictatorial
regimes, whose activist writing
shakes the foundations of the

ACE-IT To Fill Skills Gap
Dont be surprised if the next apprentice electrician who
reports to your home or business on a service call is a little
wet behind the ears. More and more young people are
answering the call to fll the skilled trades job openings
projected to hit BC over the next few years. To address
the need for more and younger people entering the skilled
trades, the Industry Training Authority (ITA) of BC has
been promoting and funding pre-employment trades
training programs whereby youth who are still in high
school can attend foundation-level classes at post-second-
ary institutions.
Te program goes by the name of Accredited Credential
Enrollment in Industry Training, or the more user friendly
ACE-IT. At Selkirk College, ACE-IT has been part of the
training profle for several years with a growing number
of regional high school students taking advantage of its
unique opportunity each year.
High school ACE-IT students who enroll in a foundation
program at Selkirk College might fnd themselves integrat-
ed with adult students or they may be part of distinct ACE-
IT cohort, says Dan Obradovic, Chair of Selkirk Colleges
School of Industry & Trades Training. Students in Founda-
tion programs adults and ACE-IT alike cover the tech-
nical training curriculum of the frst year of apprenticeships.
Students also learn the on-the-job practical skills ne-
cessary to be competent apprentices. As partially-skilled
and knowledgeable workers, foundation grads are granted
credit for between 350 and 450 hours of their apprentice-
ships upon gaining employment. Students are paid ac-
cordingly, early term apprentices typically earn between
50 per cent and 60 per cent of a journeypersons pay rate.
ACE-IT students enjoy even greater benefts in that they
earn credit towards both high school graduation requirements
and apprenticeships. Some of their tuition and supplies are
covered, so they pay less than adults in the same programs.
Some delight in the fact they pick up their Selkirk Col-
lege graduation diplomas before they get their high school
Dogwood diplomas, says Obradovic.
Selkirks intake dates align nicely with high school semesters
so students can exercise one of a number of training options:
they can take a nine-month (September to May) program such
as Mechanics or Hairdressing; they can take a six-month course
(February to July) in Carpentry, Electrical, Metal Fabricator or
Millwright/Machinist; or they may opt for the August to January
intake of Carpentry or Electrical. Professional Cook runs seven
months from September to March, as does Welding, where stu-
dents enjoy an added beneft which enables them to ladder into
the Metal Fabricator program in February if they choose.
Te next intake date for ACE-IT programs is February, 2014
with most programs fully subscribed. Some seats are currently
available in the Carpentry Program. Students interesting in the
ACE-IT program should talk to their high school counselor,
their ACE-IT coordinator or a Selkirk College counsellor.

Getting Te Ladies Out In
Te Snow
Well the season hasnt begun the way
we would all like to see it, at least in Ross-
land. We must make do with what we
have until Te Darkness takes back the
winter and enthralls us in 30cm a day for
a week, once again.
Until this happens, for those who enjoy
the mountains, we have some alternative
ftness options for visitors, locals, fam-
ilies, and groups of fabulous females.
Bettygohard is an action sports community directed at
women in the Kootenays. In the summer we work hard
for Mountain biking and this winter
we are encouraging everyone-not just
the ladies, to get out and experience the
backcountry surrounding us. We ofer
snowshoe weekly series, evening tours,
custom trips and trips that will take you
through the afernoon. Get out those
cross country skis, as we can show you
some untouched terrain, introduce you
to the very necessary backcountry wis-
dom our professional guides carry, learn
about snow science and the local lore of
the area in which the tour takes place.
Come join the ladies, or your family and friends in the
wonderful winter of the Kootenays. For more information,
call 250-231-4305 or email bettybookings@gmail.com

Harnessing Te Power of Film contd from pg 10
putting their lives at great risk. A Village Called Versailles
tells the story of an isolated community in east New Or-
leans known as Versailles, originally settled by Vietnamese
boat people. As residents rebuilt their homes and business-
es afer the devastating Hurricane Katrina, they discovered
a strength and voice that united them to successfully fght
against a govern-
ment - i mpos e d
toxic landfll.
Saturday afer-
noon, starting at
1 pm, consists of
two flms that put
the human rights
spotlight frmly
on Canada. Tird
World Canada, set
in the backdrop
of the afermath
of the suicide of
three parents in
a remote Ontario
Native commun-
ity, explores the
impact of 3rd
world conditions
on the children
lef behind and
a communitys
courage in look-
ing afer them. On the Line is an eco-adventure docu-
mentary like no other, as we follow the rough and tumble
journey of the flmmakers that reveals the severe risks and
consequences associated with the 5.5 billion dollar North-
ern Gateway pipeline project.
Te 7 pm Saturday evening showing takes us to El Salva-
dor and South Africa. Children of Memory tells the story
of the search for hundreds of children who disappeared
during the Salvadoran Civil War, weaving together three
separate yet intertwined journeys in the search for family,
identity and justice in El Salvador.
We close the 2014 festival with a timely homage to Nel-
son Mandela. Music for Mandela explores the role music
played in the remarkable life of one of the worlds most im-
portant icons. Te efects of this relationship continue to
ripple through the poorest South African townships as well
asthe world stage.
Tickets are available at Otter Books in Nelson or at the
door. But as seating is limited, people are encouraged to
buy advance tickets. Each showing of two flms is $10; all
three for $25. Doors open Friday and Saturday evenings at
6:30, 12:30 on Saturday afernoon.
Come and join us in learning from and celebrating the
remarkable work of these talented flmmakers who work
against long odds, short fnances, and threatening politics
to bring to the screen powerful stories of human struggle,
sacrifce, and triumph.

Homeowners Urged
To Test For Radon
During the month of January, an indoor radon study
led by the BC Lung Association together with the City
of Castlegar is making FREE radon test kits available to
Castlegar and surrounding area families. Te free kits are
available now through the City of Castlegar.
Te Association is also testing new homes to confrm
the efectiveness of radon building code requirements
in efect since 2006. Both eforts are in response to pre-
liminary test data that indicates a signifcant number of
Castlegar and surrounding area homes have high radon
levels which could pose a health risk.
Radon gas exposure is the second-leading cause of lung
cancer afer smoking yet many people have never heard
of radon gas nor are they aware of the known health risks.
We urge Castlegar and surrounding area homeowners
to take advantage of this opportunity and take action that
could impact their health, he continued. Health Canada
estimates as much as 16 percent of lung cancer deaths in
Canada are caused by radon and that an estimated 500,000
Canadians are living in homes that exceed the federal
guidelines for radon gas exposure. Radon is a serious pub-
lic health issue.
Exposure to radon during childhood increases the lifetime
risk of developing lung cancer. If a child lives in a home with
a very high radon concentration for only a few years, the risk
of developing lung cancer later in life could be equivalent to
a lifetime exposure to moderate radon concentration.
Tere are no immediate symptoms related to radon ex-
posure and no known health efects other than lung can-
cer. Tere are also no medical tests available to see if you
have been exposed to radon.
To learn more and get your free radon test kit, contact

Pennywise works!
Want to take your kids to Disneyland or that
long-promised exotic vacation hot spot?
They will need their own passport. If youre
separated or divorced, best allow lots of
time to get your ducks in a row to avoid a
major last-minute Oops!
If your children are under 16, they cant ap-
ply for their own passport. And most often
you wont be able to do it alone youll need
the other parents consent on the passport ap-
plication. That can be problematic if your ex
isnt close by and willing to co-operate.
You may need that signature even if youre
the parent the kids mostly live with and you
have the primary parenting responsibilities.
Passport Canada allows you to apply for a
passport for your child if youre the custodi-
al parent with sole custody and your ex only
has reasonable access.
But most separation agreements and divorce
court orders these days give parents joint
custody, and talk about the childs primary
residence and the different parenting respon-
sibilities and time and contact with the kids
after the separation.
So if you share parenting with your ex,
youll need to get your exs signature on
your childs passport application.
Youll also need to submit all agreements
and court orders that deal with the custody
or parenting of your child and any travel
authorizations (or mobility restrictions) in-
volving the children. Passport offcials look
very closely at these documents.
To avoid problems, the separation agreement
or court order dealing with your separation
and divorce arrangements can deal with this
ahead of time. Depending on the situation,
the document could specify that one parent
alone can apply for a childs passport, or that
both parents signatures are needed.
You should also get a consent letter from
your ex allowing you to travel out of the
country with your children even if your
child has a valid passport. In many cases,
countries that youre travelling to, like
the United States, will want to see that the
childs other parent has agreed to your tak-
ing them there. This is almost always the
case when travelling by air, and usually also
at vehicle border crossings.
Theres a useful consent letter form you can
download from the Foreign Affairs and In-
ternational Trade Canada website, which
details critical information about the parents,
child and trip. Its preferable to have the con-
sent letter offcially notarized, to show it`s
genuine. But that assumes your ex will agree.
Ideally, your separation or divorce arrange-
ments would also deal with consent letters
for travelling with the kids out of the coun-
try. You might each give the other a general
travel consent letter, so a separate letter isnt
needed each time one of you wants to travel
with the kids. Or if individual consent let-
ters are required for each trip, typically the
agreement or order will say that you each
will give a consent letter if the others re-
quest to travel with the kids is reasonable.
Of course, it might also contain restrictions
on the kids travel in appropriate cases.
Travel abroad with children can be tricky,
so dont leave things to the last minute. An
experienced family lawyer can help with the
many wrinkles.

Lavender
Lavender is a sweet and cuddly 5 year old cat who needs a
warm new lap. She was adopted a few years ago and has
been a terric family member, but unfortunately a new family
member has developed allergies. Full of character, Lavender
has one clipped ear and a hind leg that sticks straight out
when she sits. These little quirks indicate a tough beginning
to life, and make her an extra special and funny gal. She is
not very active and would be great in a nice quiet home.
She has lived with dogs and other cats, but prefers to
keep to herself. Please call KAAP at 250-551-1053 or visit

Motorcycle
Safety
Te grade nine stu-
dents in Ms. Meleana
Terlingens class at JVH
heard a meaningful mes-
sage on December 2,
2013. Kelsey Brenton,
who sufered a serious
motorcycle accident 12
years ago gave them a talk
about motorcycle safety.
Here is the text of Kelseys
presentation:
Motorcycles can pro-
vide one with an extra
good time. Te feeling
of freedom when youre
cruising down the high-
way feels indescribably
good. When you are
on mountain roads like
the ones around here,
with all the twists and
curves, it makes you
feel especially good.
But like most good
things, theres a trade of.
You have to be careful,
because its too easy to get
hurt. I was young, sharp,
athletic and had excel-
lent refexes. I could do
endless wheelies and was
always in total control
when on the bike. Notice
how I just said when on
the bike. But you have to
realize you are not alone
on the road. When you
ride your bike you always
have to keep in mind
that other vehicles could
do what you least expect
them to do. Tat can real-
ly mess you up. You have
to be aware if there is a
road that a car could turn
into. You have to antici-
pate that a car might turn
into a road even without
signalling.
Like what happened to
me. A car turned with-
out signalling and the
next thing I knew, I saw
nothing but car in front
of me. And, oh boy, has
my life ever changed
since that day.

June Griswold gracefully passed
away on December 10, 2013 in
Salmon Arm. Junes bright mind to
the very end was most remarkable.
Born June Stacel on December 1,
1926 in Coeur dAlene, Idaho to
parents in the logging industry,
she moved with them to several
locations throughout Idaho,
Washington and Oregon. In
Oregon she met Harry Griswold,
a handsome young logger, and
they were married on February 24,
1952. Their marriage of 54 years
included adventure, travelling and
homesteading in the Kootenays
near Kaslo, BC for 37 years.
Their two daughters, Julia and Nola were raised on the homestead where they
learnt practical skills. Farming, logging with horses, gardening and tending
the livestock were a daily part of life on the homestead. Harry and Junes choice to settle
near Kaslo was made when they saw the historic sternwheeler, SS Moyie. In 1968,
having built their log house, outbuildings and established their gardens, they joined
the Kootenay Lake Historical Society (KLHS). While Harry was the maintenance
chairman of the ship for many years, June was the secretary of the organisation from
1972 to 1989 and also curator from 1982. During this period the ships designation as
a National Historic Site was aIfrmed with a plaque and the Pioneer Families oI Kaslo
book was published.
June was the convenor for annual fundraising teas on the ship from 1973 to 1989
which commemorated certain groups each year including Kaslo pioneers, former crew
members, veterans, and former May Queens. In 1987 she, with many others, was part of
the SOS campaign which raised $75,000 locally Ior the ship, encouraging the Province
to provide $100,000 and the Federal Government to match these. This allowed the
Society to stabilise, preserve and begin restoration of the ship. Throughout, June wrote
regular articles to document the activities of the Society for the local press.
In 1990 June and Harry moved to the Shuswap to be closer to their daughters. June quickly
got involved in local organisations refecting her interests in local history and Iood
production including the local seed savers group and the Salmon Arm Community Band.
Her efforts were recognized in 2010 when she received the Kay Braby Community Spirit
Award at the Women of the Year event staged by the Women in Business of Salmon Arm.
June leaves behind many grieving family members including her daughters Julia
Armstrong and Nola Kotow (Ken); grandchildren: Lena Armstrong, Della Castillo
(Omar), Donna Mongrain (Eric), and Ryan Bennett; great grandchildren: Matthew and
Corey Mongrain.
A Celebration of Junes Life will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 17 at Julia Armstrongs
Iarm, 61 Hall Road, Enderby (phone 250-832-4359). In lieu oI fowers, consider a
donation to the Haney Heritage Museum, Enderby Museum or the SS Moyie in Kaslo.
June always put others before herself. She loved people of all ages and had many
friends locally and internationally. Her passing has left a large hole in the lives of all
those she touched with her gentle persistent ways, bright blue eyes and keen mind.

Kelsey - Motorcycle Safety contd from pg 33
Ive gone through tons of diferent emotions since that
day. I woke up months later in a hospital, unable to walk, to
talk or even to swallow. Ive lost so much of my life. I used
to have a couple of houses, a good job as an electrician,
a beautiful partner and plans for the future. But then, its
amazing how much your life can change in a second. Like
now. Ive lost my girlfriend, job and houses. My whole
life has changed, just from having fun on my motor-
bike. Ive learned that when youre on a motorbike, its
pretty easy to let your speed get carried away when youre
twisting your wrist meaning the throttle and the next
thing you know, youre going way too fast to react to any-
thing out of the ordinary. No matter now tempting it is to
fy, its not worth the consequences, so keep your speed
down!
Another important thing about motorbikes is your gear.
Leather works well to protect you from road rash, and
chances are youll survive road rash. Te most important
part of your motorcycle gear is your helmet. Everything
else is important too, but the helmet can save your life.
But motorbikes can be both fun and safe if you are able
to keep your speed down, be aware of hazardous road
conditions and always be aware of the other cars. I still
promote motorcycles but when Im around people who
are just beginning to ride, it worries me. It worries me be-
cause I realize how tempting it is to push the limits and
how dangerous that can be. Now Im feeling the conse-
quences and I dont wish that on anyone else.
Luckily, we live in a society which is prepared to look
afer people in my predicament. What happened to me is
just one particular case and I dont want to scare anyone
of motorcycles! Just BE CAREFUL cause accidents hap-
pen, and my life will never be the same.
Tis is my story about the latest hardships in my life.
But I am still ME and am up for having a good time doing
whatever, whenever and with whomever. My mobility has
been limited but not my positive attitude.
Ed Davidson of Kaslo, BC, passed away
peacefully on January 5, 2014, at the age of 73.
A service will not be held, at his request.
Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom flled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember what we once shared,
Miss me but let me go.

West Kootenay Youth Connect With
Te World As Global Citizens
Te Nelson Global Awareness Network will be hosting
an International Development Symposium for Youth for
high school-aged youth on Friday February 7, in Nelson.
Tis event, open to all West Kootenay youth Grades
9-12, aims to increase knowledge and awareness, build
empathy and identify opportunities for youth involve-
ment and action around critical development issues,
globally and locally. We are already all global citizens,
said George Chandler, the Symposium Coordinator. Te
only question lef is what kind of global citizen each of us
will be. Tis event will actively engage youth in an experi-
ential learning process that will encourage them to answer
this question for themselves, by expanding their minds
and hearts, and considering their own role and capacity
as active global citizens, working together in helping to
make a better, more just community and world.
Te Symposium comes at the end of International
Development Week in Canada. It will provide a dynam-
ic, fun and supportive environment that will stimulate
young participants to explore interlinked global issues
for themselves, with ties to local issues and perspectives.
It is being planned and facilitated by a leadership group
made up of youth/young adults, aged 17-30 years, under
the direction of an experienced Coordinator.
I was involved for over 15 years with a similar event in
the Lower Mainland, which many West Kootenay youth
have been able to attend over the years. Unfortunately,
this event is no longer happening, so we wanted to pro-
vide an opportunity for local youth to not only learn in a
similar way, but also refect on their own ideas and cap-
acity for social action, and meet and make friends with
other youth who have similar motivations.
Te International Development Symposium for Youth
will run on Friday February 7 from 9 am to 4:30 pm at
the Prestige Lake Resort in Nelson. Te cost is $15, which
includes lunch, snacks and all materials.
Registration is now open, students can register online at
http://nelsonglobalawareness.net/Te deadline for regis-
tering is January 29. For more information, contact George

Anyone who knew Gene will understand that he did just this he flled his life
with love and adventure. He was many things to many people: a loving hus-
band, a selfess father, a loyal son, an adventurous grandfather, a caring friend,
and a trusted town barber. As a straight talker and story teller he was always
ready to share a good meal and a hearty laugh, a golf tee box or chair lift.
He began work at Alberts Barber Shop in 1973 and never looked back. The
barber shop was his lifes work and his connection to his community. He loved
the daily banter with customers as over the years he watched lives change and
boys grow into men.
A sudden relapse of cancer cut his life much too short. With his family at his
side, Gene let go of this life, passing with dignity to other lands of grandiose
golf courses, warm sunshine, and chocolate banana cream pies.
He made a big splash in this pool of humanity, and although we will miss
him immensely, we are all richer for having known him. His bravery, honesty,
open-mindedness, generosity, and genuine zest for life will always inspire us.
Gene is survived by his wife, Cornelia Vibbert, children and their spouses, Marc
Vibbert (Tammy), Christina Wade (Bill), Dana Smith (Chad), Doug Ogilvie and
Dennis Ogilvie, as well as many grandchildren.
At his request no service will be held.
Raise your glass to a remarkable man who will be greatly missed,
but will always remain alive in our hearts.

Frank Vernon Miles, 90, died on December 25
th
,
2013 at Kendal at Hanover, NH, where he had
lived for the past 11 years.
Frank was born in Salem, Oregon on September
16, 1923, the middle son of Ross and Laura
Miles. He spent most of his early years in Hazel
Green, a small rural community outside of Salem.
After he graduated from high school in 1941,
he entered the Engineering School at Oregon
State University. However, when the U.S. entered
World War II he looked for an opportunity to be
of service in a way that was more aligned with
his faith than the military, and enrolled in a
program at Guilford College, NC, to train young
men to undertake work in international relief
and reconstruction. Within months this training
was discontinued, as congressional legislation
cancelled the right of conscientious objectors
to go overseas. Frank was then drafted as a
conscientious objector into the Civilian Public
Service (CPS) and, for three years, cut trails in
the Smoky Mountains National Park, served as
a medical guinea pig for jaundice experiments
at the University of Pennsylvania, and worked as
an attendant in both the State Mental Hospital
in Trenton, NJ and in the psychiatric clinic of the
Duke University Medical School.
Within three weeks of being released from
CPS at the age of 22, Frank was on his way to
China to begin an assignment with the Friends
Ambulance/Friends Service Unit, which ultimately
lasted four years (46-50). In 1946 he assisted
in rebuilding Zhengzhou, Weiwei, and Anyang
Hospitals, which had been badly damaged
during the Sino-Japanese War. Then in 1947,
as medical mechanic, he joined Medical Team
19 (MT-19) at the International Peace Hospital
in Yenan (the wartime headquarters of the
Communist Party), during a truce established in
the civil war between the Chinese Nationalists
and Communists. Shortly after MT-19s arrival
in Yenan, hostilities resumed and Yenan was
attacked by the Nationalists. Along with the
entire hospital the team evacuated on foot, often
under the cover of night to avoid air attacks, for
the next fourteen months moving from village
to village to reestablish mobile hospitals so as
to treat both civilian and military casualties (15
main moves, with stays in 44 villages).
Then in March of 1948, along with a Government
Guide, Frank walked across North China to the
port city of Tianjin so that a teammate could
return to the United States. Next he looked after
a machine shop, garage, and a small eet of
trucks in Chung Mou a period during which the
village changed hands between Nationalists and
Communists several times. In October 1948 Frank
was named Chairperson for the Friends Service
Unit groups working in China and assigned to
the ofce in Shanghai. Upon completion of his
term as Chairperson he was ready to return to the
United States to complete his college education,
but by that time the U.S. Navy was blockading
the port of Shanghai so it took 8 months for him
to secure the requisite permission to leave China
(via Tianjin, from which he took a small coastal
vessel to Hong Kong and on to the U.S.)
Upon his return to the United States Frank entered
Haverford College in the fall of 1950 (Class of 52),
which was made possible by generous scholarship
and hospitality support. During his senior year he
met Patricia Beatty who was teaching in a public
school in Wilmington, Delaware, and they were
married in 1951. They spent their rst decade
together in the Philadelphia area. Frank earned a
B.A. in Economics and Sociology from Haverford
College in 1952 and then, while working full-
time, a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from
Villanova University in 1962. During this time,
Pat devoted her time to raising their young
family and contributing to various activities in
the community. After the devastating loss of
their rstborn, Douglas, to Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome (SIDS), Frank and Pat welcomed four
healthy children into their lives.
Upon graduating from college Frank sought
employment that would support the family
and, at the same time, allow them to continue
discovering other parts of the world. He worked
as Chief Engineer at Lee Tire and Rubber in
Conshohocken, PA (51-62) in anticipation of
their opening a plant in the Philippines. When the
company was acquired and liquidated, he joined
the International division of the Firestone Tire
and Rubber Company, serving as Chief Engineer
for plants in Valencia, Venezuela (62-64) and
Bethune, France (64-69), and then as Plant
Manager in Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia (69-74),
Joliette, Quebec (74-76, where his knowledge of
French and his experience in resolving conicts
were useful in settling protracted labor disputes),
and Hamilton, Ontario (76-78). In 1978 Frank
was appointed Manufacturing Manager for
Firestone Canada, still based in Hamilton, Ontario
(78-82). Frank and Pat greatly enjoyed sharing
with their family and friends the exploration and
appreciation of these varied places and their
people, and building lasting friendships.
After retiring from Firestone at the age of 60, an
opportunity arose for Frank to serve as General
Secretary/Treasurer for Canadian Yearly Meeting,
the national body of Canadian Friends (Quakers) in
Toronto, Ontario (83-89). In addition to keeping
the administrative wheels of the organization
going he, along with Pat, contributed warmly and
wisely to the widely dispersed Friends Meetings
and worship groups across Canada through their
travel, visitation, and engagement.
A second retirement took Frank and Pat to the
small village of Kaslo, British Columbia where
they relished a decade of living next door to
son Dan and his family, contributing to several
community service groups, hiking up to old
mines in the mountains and swimming in
the cold waters of Kootenay Lake. There they
also participated in the life of Argenta Friends
Meeting, a warm and caring community.
In 2000, after 38 years of living outside the
United States, Frank and Pat relocated to New
Hampshire so as to be closer to medical support
in working with Pats advancing Alzheimers.
While on the waiting list for an apartment at
Kendal at Hanover (a continuing care retirement
community) they lived for 2 years with
daughter Cathy and her family at Brock Farm in
Piermont, NH. There, in addition to helping with
farm projects and engaging fully with family life,
Frank volunteered at the Piermont Library, came
to know intimately the early spring ephemeral
wildowers, and explored the surrounding hills by
bicycle and on foot. Later, from a new home base
at Kendal (03-13), Frank sang with the Bach
Study Group and the Kendal Chorale. Throughout
his time at Kendal he gave generously of himself
in supporting those whom advancing years had
robbed of independence and grew with grace
into his own time of increased dependence on
the help of others.
Over the years Frank and Pat spent many a
holiday with son Steves family in Ipswich, MA;
made a winter trip to Florida to visit daughter
Rebeccas family in Tallahassee every year since
she moved there in 1989; and enjoyed extended
visits to his and Pats beloved chalet on Miles
Road in Kaslo, near son Dans family.
Franks roots and contributions to the Religious
Society of Friends (Quakers) ran deep. During his
childhood his family participated in the Pacic
Coast Association of Friends, a group of meetings
that was re-establishing worship on the basis
of silence. Witness to the peaceful resolution of
conict was an essential part of their life. Franks
father had been a conscientious objector in the
First World War and had worked in France with
the American Friends Service Committee, building
orphanages for children who had lost their
parents in the war. One of Franks brothers, Ward,
also served as a conscientious objector during
World War II.
In their lives as a couple, Frank and Pat
participated in the worship and community life
of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
wherever possible. They were active in Radnor
Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania until they
transferred their membership to Hamilton
Monthly Meeting in Ontario, Canada after years
of living abroad where there were no Friends
meetings close by. (During those years, they often
held meeting for worship in their home, rst as
a family and later, with a small group of friends
who wished to join them.) Still later they were
active members of Argenta Friends Meeting (BC,
Canada). Since the move to New Hampshire
Frank was a steady and beloved member of
Hanover Friends Meeting (where for a period he
served on the Building Committee) and later he
worshiped with the Kendal Worship Group.
Frank carried himself in a beautifully unassuming
way that didnt broadcast his lifetime of rich
experience in Quakerism, and his international
work and service. Nevertheless he was known
by many as a source of light and wisdom with
a ready ear for listening, a sense of perspective,
and a warm smile and chuckle.
Frank Miles is predeceased by his wife, Patricia
Beatty Miles. He is survived by his brothers Ward
Miles of Lacey, Washington and Rodney Miles of
Portland, Oregon and their extended families.
Frank is lovingly remembered by his children
and their families: Stephen and Ingrid Miles of
Ipswich, Massachusetts and their sons Garth
Landers and Stephen Miles, Jr.; Rebecca Miles
and Ward Broderson of Tallahassee, Florida and
her children Jessamyn Doan and Daniel Doan;
Dan Miles and Shelley Stickel Miles of Kaslo, BC,
Canada and their daughters Sarah and Hlne
Miles; and Catherine Miles Grant and Charles
Grant of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont and their sons
Brendan and Julian Grant.
A memorial service in the manner of Friends
(Quakers) will be held on Saturday, April 19
th
at
2:00 pm at Kendal at Hanover, New Hampshire,
under the care of the Hanover Friends Meeting.
Later in the summer, Franks ashes will be
buried next to Patricias in a memorial garden
near Argenta Friends Meeting, in the Purcell
Mountains of British Columbia. In lieu of owers,
please consider making a contribution in Franks
memory to a charity of your choice.

HEALTH MATTERS
Plans To Change Kaslo
Emergency Department
Hours Put On Hold
Interior Health has put plans on hold for
changes to emergency department hours
at Victorian Community Health Centre until
April 1, 2014 in order to fully consider a new
proposal presented by a group of physicians
interested in providing 24/7 coverage for
the emergency department. Emergency de-
partment hours were scheduled to change
to weekday, daytime hours of operation, on
January 6.
The decision to hold off on the change
was made after the physicians informed
Interior Health that they want to explore
a fee-for-service rather than contract
compensation model.
As stafng allows, the Kaslo emergency
department will be open 24/7 while dis-
cussions about a potential new model take
place. There will still be times when limited
nursing and/or physician availability will
result in emergency department closures in
the months ahead. IH will provide updates
on any interruptions to 24/7 coverage.

Ben Biao
In Chinese medicine there is a concept
called ben biao (root branch) which is a
method for approaching the treatment of
patients. If a patient is presenting with very
severe symptoms such as acute pain, fever,
fracture or nausea, then it is necessary to
treat that symptom directly. This is called
treating the branch. On the other hand, if
the patient presents with longstanding
symptoms such as chronic pain, insomnia,
low energy or constipation then the un-
derlying cause of disease is treated. This is
called treating the root.
The cause of your insomnia might be the
stress at work or a missing ingredient in your
diet. The strength of Chinese medicine and
acupuncture is the identication and treat-
ment of this underlying root cause, perhaps
even before symptoms have developed.
Often in our world of quick xes we
continue to treat the branch without ever
looking at the root cause of illness. In a
world with increasing amounts of chronic
illness it is important to try to be proactive
by exercising, eating right and working with
practitioners of preventative medicine.
Acupuncture can treat acute symptoms
and is helpful in disease prevention. There
is the ability to be preventative, such as
by boosting the immune system before u
season, but there is also success in treating
chronic disease such as arthritis, bro
myalgia, anxiety, low energy or menopausal
symptoms. You may be surprised at what
acupuncture can do to help.
We are all complex beings and experience
health problems in diverse ways. Physical
problems can often have their root in our
emotions or we may be experiencing
emotional problems which have their root
in our physical bodies. As long as there are
no acute symptoms, it is my job as an acu-
puncturist to correctly identify, then treat
the underlying cause of disease. Only then
can we eliminate the return of symptoms.
As an acupuncturist my goal is not to be a
replacement for your family doctor, but I am
here to help you with your health concerns.
Im interested in working with other health
practitioners because successful treatment
often comes about through bridging several
different philosophies and practices.

E- Cigarettes: Breathing
Life Into A Dying Industry
Like many smokers, Dan wants to quit.
He has heard that electronic cigarettes,
also known as e-cigarettes, eCigs or vapour
cigarettes, might be helpful. But with all the
controversy about them in the news and on
the internet, he isnt sure.
Dan is skeptical, he has noticed e-ciga-
rettes are not just sold in pharmacies like
other quit-smoking aids. They can be found
at convenience stores and gas stations,
often strategically placed near conventional
cigarettes. Dan also knows that tobacco
companies are making them and he doesnt
trust that they would make a product to
help people quit smoking.
Dan also wonders how they can help
smokers quit when they look like regular
cigarettes. He has heard that quitting smok-
ing can be as difcult as quitting heroin
but he also knows that when people are
trying to quit injecting heroin doctors dont
prescribe drugs via a needle.
E-cigarettes are cigarette shaped tubes
that simulate the sensation of smoking.
Batteries in the tubes heat up a uid that
gives off a vapour which looks like smoke.
Although the jury is still out on e-cigarettes,
there are health and safety concerns.
Health Canada recently advised
Canadians not to purchase electronic
cigarettes because they have not been fully
evaluated for safety. (see www.healthy
canadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/
hc-sc/2009/13373a-eng.php)
There are concerns that electronic
cigarettes may make smoking socially ac-
ceptable again, especially if used in smoke
free places. Because e-cigarettes release a
vapour and not smoke, there are currently
very few rules about where they can and
cant be used. The result is e-cigarettes
being used in places where smoking has
been banned like classrooms, pubs and
shopping malls.
E-cigarettes might encourage young peo-
ple to start smoking. In Canada, e-cigarettes
cannot contain nicotine but they can contain
kid-friendly avours ranging from bacon to
bubble gum avouring that could encour-
age youth to smoke e-cigarettes as well as
real tobacco products.
Dan decides e-cigarettes are not worth the
risk. Instead, he plans to talk with his health
care professional and visit http://quitnow.ca
for tips, tools and support.
