BELCOURT, CM, LLD Author of Walking In The Woods: A Mtis Journey, Published October 2006 by Brindle & Glass: an engaging, unaffected family history filled with gentle humour and illuminating anecdotes from our history (Ken Tingley, Edmonton Journal, Oct. 22, 2006) An entrepreneur who has devoted most of his life to helping others, Herb Belcourt was co-founder of Canative Housing (1971-2004) and the present Belcourt Brosseau Mtis Awards which offers scholarships to Mtis students. Herb has been on various boards including the Commanding Officers Aboriginal Elders Advisory Committee RCMP K Division (2002-2013), Chairman for the Centre for Innovative Management for the MBA Program at Athabasca University (1993-2001) and is at present Interim Chair of Mtis Nation Rupertsland Institute Board of Governors. Herb has received numerous honours and awards including: Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Alberta (2001) Member of the Order of Canada (July 2010) (for contributions towards helping to improve the quality of life for the Mtis people of Alberta, including removing barriers to affordable housing and education.) Herb has been a Member of Edmonton Inner City Church Corp. (1976 -1977), the Bishops Men, All Saints Cathedral (1981 -1985), the Outreach Committee of All Saints Cathedral (1983), Edmonton Anglican Diocesan Development Fund Committee (2003-2010), and of St. Thomas' Anglican Church 2015 Building Committee in Sherwood Park since 2008. Herbs first business venture was Herbs Upholstery Ltd (1957 1960), followed by Mutual Telephone Line Service (1960 -1965). He started Belcourt Construction in 1965, which became the third largest power line construction company in Alberta until he sold it in 1980. After that he opened The Sword and Shield in 1983, Sherwood Parks first movie theatres, which he ran until 2002 alongside the Bell and Court British pub and restaurant (1986-1989).
