4-H Regional Winter Workshops 2014

Who: All 4-H members, leaders, parents and families are invited to join Barnstable, Bristol, Norfolk and Plymouth County 4-H for our annual 4-H conference! What: A day of fun-filled, educational, hands-on learning activities. When: Saturday, February 8, 2014 Registration is in the Lobby from 9:30 to 9:50 am. Workshops from 10 am to 3 pm. Where: Silver Lake Middle School 256 Pembroke Street Kingston, MA 02364 Cost: $10.00 per 4-H member or sibling with a maximum of $30.00 per family; no charge for adults. Please make checks payable to : Plymouth County 4-H Advisory Council. Mail Registration to: Plymouth County 4-H 228 High Street Hanson, Ma 02341 Meals: Breakfast coffee and donuts will be for sale in the morning. Boxed lunches will be available for purchase including sandwiches, chips, cookies and drink or please bring your own bag lunch for this event.

Snow: If there is a severe storm, we will cancel the event; there is no snow date. Money will not be returned but will be used toward the event next year since materials will have already been purchased. In the event of bad weather, call the Plymouth County 4-H Office at 781-293-3541 and listen to the machine for instructions or visit Plymouth County 4-H on Facebook. Remember that everyone must make their own decisions about whether the roads are safe to travel on based on local conditions and their personal feelings!

Registration forms are accepted until January 28th, but workshops are made on a first-come, first-serve basis! Get your forms in early for the best chance to get the workshop of your choice!

From the South: Take Rte. 3 North to Exit 10.

YOUTH AND ADULT WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
4-H Livestock Jeopardy: Livestock Jeopardy is an interactive knowledge game played with buzzers to answer questions about livestock and 4-H in general. The Livestock Jeopardy categories are poultry, goat, rabbit, dairy cow, beef cow, swine, sheep and 4-H trivia. Come find out more about Livestock Jeopardy with 4-H volunteer Robin Clapp and even get a chance to play along just like on the Jeopardy Game Show! For ages 8 and up. 4-H Records- Why do we do them anyway? : Learn how to do 4-H records and why you should do them. 4-H Ambassadors will show you fun and interesting ways to keep track of your records. They will also explain the reasons we do records and how it has helped them to reach their goals. Taught by Plymouth County 4-H Ambassadors. All Natural Room Scents: Orange, cinnamon and Spice or Lemon, Rosemary & Vanilla or other aromatic scents Yummy aromatherapy for your living space. Join us in creating your own simmering waters infused with spices, herbs and fruits. This workshop is taught by volunteer Evelyn Taylor. For all ages Animal first aid kit and how to use it: When your pet has an emergency, being prepared is very important. Before an emergency strikes, be sure you know how your veterinarian handles emergencies or where you should go if you have one. What to include in your first aid kit and how to use the items will be covered. Early action, knowledgeable techniques and pre planning are key to keeping your pet safe. A specific focus on equine emergencies will be included. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Jennifer Sullivan for ages 9&up. Barn Safety & Emergency Preparedness: What safety hazards are commonly overlooked? Learn about emergency situations for your animals, especially equine and how to handle barn safety and emergency situations. What do you do during a natural disaster to protect your farm animals? Taught by 4-H Educator Valerie Schell for youth 9 and up. Beekeeping and the Environment: This hands-on workshop, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen, will help participants learn more about beekeeping and how the honeybee lives and produces honey. Also get the chance to roll bees wax into a small candle to take home! For all ages. Community Service Project: Community service projects change lives. Join the Plymouth County 4-H Ambassadors in making pillows out of scrap fleece to be donated to local nursing homes or hospice. Learn how to make a simple pillow without sewing a stitch and in the process brighten someones day. If you choose you can bring bright fun colored fleece with you to share and make your pillow to donate. For ages 8 and up

Chicken and Egg: This workshop is a hands-on presentation of information about eggs and the care of chickens as a hobby, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen for ages 5-10.

Crazy for Cats: Come join the fun with a purr-fect hour filled with everything you'll ever need to know about cats! You will learn about the different and most common breeds of cats, color variations, coat types, and much more. We will be playing "Cat Bingo" and making a craft. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Marissa Young for all ages.

Dog Agility Learning Class: Learn how to train your dog in agility by using objects you might have at home. Receive instruction for making your own agility equipment. Learn about using a throw tube to train your dog to work away from you. You will make a throw tube to take home with you to start your training. . Bring a bag of dry dog or cat food to this workshop to help provide pet food for a local food pantry * no dogs allowed in this workshop, for humans only. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Cathy Acampora for all ages Drama Games: Love to pretend? Then this is the workshop for you. Have fun trying on a different persona. Theater games such as Park Bench and Catch a Story will be taught. 4-H volunteer Laura Anderson will be teaching this workshop for all ages. Goat Milk Soap: There are many uses for goat milk including making homemade soaps. Come learn this fun process using goat milk and take some home too! Taught by 4-H Parent Susan Roy for ages 8& Up How to make a dog leash: Make a braided dog leash out of tough parachute cord or a tug toy make from old jeans. Bring an old pair of jeans to cut up and make into a tug toy for your dog. Make a tough braided cording leash. During this workshop help provide pet food for a local food pantry. Bring a bag of dry dog or cat food and help a local food pantry. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Cathy Acampora for ages 8& up. Interview & Job Search Skills : Come learn how to prepare for a job search using the internet as your greatest tool. Also learn tried and true tricks for a successful interview. Resume skills will also be discussed. Taught by 4-H volunteer Reva Levin for ages 15 & up Make A Horse Craft - In this fun workshop, you will make a horse-themed craft to take home. Taught by 4-H volunteer Kim Gatto for all ages. Marshfield Fair 101 - Come learn about all the Marshfield Fair has to offer for 4-Hers. Learn about 4-H animal shows, demonstrations, 4-H Day and all opportunities during this 10 day fair. Also learn about how to properly enter animal show classes, compete in the banner contest, and how to offer a demo. Ask about new opportunities at the fair including a 4-H Horse Show and Rabbit Show. Taught by 4-H Educator, Molly Vollmer for all ages. Paint a Breyer Horse: In this fun workshop, you will make a breyer horse model. Learn about horse coloring and breeds. Taught by 4-H volunteer Gerri Schell. For ages 9 and up. Pasture & Manure Management : A look at Best Management Practices to help you manage your manure and get the most out of your pasture. This discussion will also look at the regulatory issues horse owners face, and the options available. Topics covered include: Rotational Grazing, Reducing Erosion and Pollution, Types of Composting, and funding opportunities available to horse owners for Conservation Projects. Taught by Volunteer Nicole Kerstetter for Ages 12 & up Project Butterfly Wings: Project Butterfly Wings is a partnership between 4-H youth and professional scientists. Participants are citizen scientists who collect data on butterflies to help professional butterfly scientists better understand butterfly populations. Come learn about this exciting 4-H project area! Taught by 4H volunteer Jessica Brown, this workshop is for ages 8 and up. Rabbit Care- Introduction to-Basic Rabbit Care: an introduction to topics such as how to choose a rabbit, breeds, nutrition, housing, basic grooming, and 4-H showing. Have you ever wanted your own rabbit and to learn what goes into taking care of one? Do you currently have your own rabbit and want to learn more and get questions answered about rabbit care? This workshop will give you an introduction to topics such as rabbit breeds, nutrition, housing, grooming, general care, and 4-H showing. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Chelsea Hampton

Rabbit Care: Advanced- Participants will be introduced to the American Rabbits Breeders Association, Common Diseases, Running a Rabbitry, and Showing. Are you curious about what ARBA is or what ARBA shows are like? Have you ever wanted to breed rabbits and run a rabbitry? This workshop will cover topics such as showing, rabbitry management, common diseases, and the ARBA. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Chelsea Hampton ROCKETS AWAY ! - Participants will design and build their own two liter water bottle rocket and get the chance to launch their rocket in this two period workshop taught by 4-H Educator Jay Field for ages 9 and up. Scrapbooking for 4-H Records: Learn how to make your records fun and interesting. This workshop will teach you how to scrapbook your accomplishments so you can include them in your 4-H Records. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Christine Hoyt for ages 8 & Up Seed Starting Using Recucled Materials - Having a "Green" Garden can mean more that keeping your plants alive and healthy. We will explore the use of the 3 R's ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ) from starting seedlings, weed control , composting and other fun innovative ideas! This a hands on activity, expect to get your hands dirty!! Taught by Evelyn Golden, 4-H Program Assistant for all ages. Social Media Workshop: Learn about how to set up a 4-H website or Facebook page. Learn the advantages and challenges around using social media for your 4-H club. For ages 12 and up, this workshop is taught by 4-H Member Cheryl Acampora Tiles of Fun: Make your own fun coaster to protect your table top: 4-H Style. Learn to make these fun inexpensive gifts for family teachers, coaches- or your favorite 4-H Leader! Taught by 4-H Volunteer Evelyn Taylor for all ages Valentine Craft: Celebrate Valentines Day! Come learn a little about the history of the holiday and do some fun make and take activities. Extra Valentines will be brought to a local Nursing home. Taught by 4-H Volunteers Lori Marquez and Carol Wahlen. Vermicomposting: Composting with worms is and economical and green way to dispose of waste! Learn about basic worm biology and how to care for them in your home. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Janice McPhillips of Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset for all ages. What am I judging? Have you ever wondered what a 4-H judging contest is? Whether youve never given it any thought or havent ever been interested in trying them, a 4-H Judging contest can be a lot of fun! Come learn how to judge anything and what it takes to give champion quality oral reasons. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Priscilla McGilvary for ages 9 & Up. Winning 4-H Presentations: Lean how to put together an award winning visual presentation and have a chance to get all your questions answered. This workshop is for all ages and will be taught by 4-H Teen Ambassadors Casey Culhane and Andy Sebastiano. Wool is Wow: Everyone knows that sheep grow wool but in this workshop you will have the chance to learn some fun facts about why this fiber is so amazing. We will also learn about felting and everyone will make their own piece of felted fiber art to take home with them. Taught by 4-H Volunteer Megan Connolly for all ages.

You must select a workshop for each period for your own age group. Do not select the same workshop more than once!
