What else is as vital as the ability to save human lives? A doctor’s routine is perfectly
meaningful in its striving to relieve the pain and suffering, to get rid of diseases and
illnesses, to find new secrets of good health. There are not many professions of which
one might say with no exaggeration, “This job is done for the benefit of the whole
human race”. Surely, the first and most important among such professions is that of

To succeed in such a complicated area, which puts so much responsibility on the
person, one needs to study really hard. Education received must be of highest quality,
too. Russia is famous for its medical traditions, as well as its achievements in science,
inventions and discoveries. Many Russian Nobel Laureates won the Prize in
Medicine. Many Russian physicians have proved their highest qualification more than
once. Saint- Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy is one of the oldest leaders
among the medical higher education establishments in the Russian Federation.
The Academy was founded in 1895, and for over 113 years it has retained its high
international reputation. In the rating of medical universities of Russia, the Academy
appears in the leading “A” group. Among the nearly 1060 government universities of
Russia, the Academy is included in the first hundred of the best ones. It has received a
certificate of the “100 Best Universities of Russia” and a special medal. It is approved
by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is mentioned in the WHO World
Directory of Medical Schools. In 2004 Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical
Academy was rewarded twice: it received a gold medal and a “European Quality”
diploma, which confirms the professional approach to teaching of students and the
high standard of its graduates’ qualification in the European perspective. For its long-
standing contribution to the development of medical education in the world, the
Academy got the Order of St. Sophia (Oxford, England) in 2004. The Academy was
the world’s first medical educational institution to specialize in Pediatrics. For many
years it has been the leader in this area.
Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy is licensed and accredited by the
State for preparing specialists in the area of Medicine. Graduates of the Academy
receive national degrees in education that confirm their competence and skills to be in
accordance with the state educational standards prescribed for their specialties. An
Academy’s degree confirms that its owner has achieved the standard of theoretical
knowledge and practical skills sufficient to perform medical activities in accordance
with the requirements, and it entitles the person certified to exercise medicine
professionally on the territory of the Russian Federation and in other countries.
The most advanced medical equipment and technical resources are at the service of
Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy. The intellectual and scientific
potential of the teaching staff allows the Academy to gradually improve the forms and
methods of training, introducing creative elements into the educational process.
Subjects are taught in Russian and in English. More than 60 large clinics in Saint-
Petersburg provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in
real-life work-related situations. The clinics have the most up-to-date equipment, too.
There are about 5000 students from over 40 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and
America studying at the academy at present. International conferences and
symposiums on various issues of medicine are regularly held in Saint-Petersburg. The
Academy takes an active part in such events discussing new discoveries and
contemporary approaches to treatment of various diseases. The best Preparatory
Faculty in Saint-Petersburg is organized at the Academy to prepare applicants for
their entrance exams at medical universities of Russia.
During the period of studies, students are accommodated in 4 comfortable hostels.
There are libraries, self-study classrooms, sport clubs, kitchens, and student cafes
The most important principle of training at the Academy is providing students with
access to patients from the very first year of studies. Interdisciplinary approach to
training in fundamental subjects and the interrelation between theoretical and clinical

subjects also provide for the efficiency of education. Students of the Academy take
part in research within the framework of the student research programs and societies.
On Academy’s course completion students receive a degree with the international
standard appendix. Programs and syllabuses that are used in the course of training are
those recommended by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME).Several
thousands doctors who graduated from the Academy are presently working in various
fields of medicine in more than 70 countries in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Near
and Middle East, Australia and even Antarctica! Many of them keep in touch with
their alma mater, Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy.
Upon successful completion of any Russian state university, the graduate gets higher

1909, when first aviators pioneered the sky, prepares specialists for all areas of
aviation: pilots, navigators, aircraft maintenance engineers, airport and air
transportation engineers, airline managers, air transportation managers, as well as
experts in flight security, Personnel Management, Law, and Public Relations. There
are over 5000 people from more than 30 countries studying at the University at the

27 foreign centers of education and research.Modern academic buildings, the research
and technology library (over 500 000 books), the aviation history museum (20 000
exhibits), sports centers, student hostels, the university hotel are all situated on the
territory of the “air town”, next to the large international airport of St. Petersburg. The
University is proud of its unique training center for future pilots, navigators and land
dispatchers, where they simulate the real work of the air crew in detail, including the
emergency and extreme situations, in order to learn and test themselves. Students
enjoy access to the stimulators on equal terms with the working crews of different
countries, who are glad to share their real-life experience with trainees.
