Jordan Lafayette Prince, 24, of St Charles, was originally charged with second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child in connection to the December 2012 death of a 4-monthold girl. Princes murder count has since been upgraded to first degree, and this week he was also indicted on additional charges of forcible sodomy and abuse of a child. Court records cited by St Louis Post-Dispatch show that the cause of death was asphyxiation, but the child also suffered serious injuries related to sodomy, which caused internal bleeding. Prince told police he became frustrated with the baby because she wouldn't stop crying. He's been jailed on 150,000 cash bail. Online records show that Prince was convicted in September 2007 of lewd conduct with a minor under age 16. First responders were called to a home in the 3600 block of Fremont Drive in St Charles shortly after 11.30am on December 3 because the baby, Ashlynn Peters, was not breathing. The infant was rushed to a local hospital being airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead the next day. An autopsy conducted at the hospital December 5 revealed that the baby died from asphyxiation. Prince told investigators that he had been looking after baby Ashlynn while his girlfriend, Jessica Howell, was sleeping. The 24-year-old told investigators that he choked the baby with his hand and left her lying on her side when she would not stop crying. When he returned an hour later to check on the infant, she was unresponsive. Prince admitted that he handled Ashlynn 'in a cruel manner and rougher than he should have,' police said.

According to authorities, Howell and Prince had been dating for five months, although Prince was not Ashlynn's father, St Charles Patch reported. The girls mother also has two older children, a boy and a girl.

One can only hope these factors will be taken into consideration as aggravating circumstances. The details of baby Ashlynns death are nothing less than horrifyingly egregious. According the the affidavit of probable cause and the resulting criminal complaint, four-month-old Ashlynn died of asphyxiation by strangulation, but not until after she was subjected to brutal torture. Prince, had been previously convicted for a sexual offense against a child. Not only did she admit she was aware of Princes background, she indicated she has confirmed the information via Internet sex-offender registries and had actually discussed the matter with Prince. Howell also admitted to investigators that she had exchanged text messages with Jordan Prince suggesting her willingness to allow him to engage in sexual activity with her infant daughter. On December 2, 2012, Jessica Lynn Howell took baby Ashlynn to Princes home to spend the night.

What happened to baby Ashlynn at Princes home is beyond imagination. Readers are warned that the affidavits description of Ashlynns last hours are unfathomably gruesome. According to the affidavit: [Ashlynn] suffered petechial hemorrhages to her lower face, neck, chest and back. She further suffered contusions to her neck, under her chin, and to her thymus. She sustained hemorrhage in the area of thyroid, larynx, and trachea. Ashlynn was also the victim of blunt force trauma to the left side of her head causing a laceration to her ear and a hemorrhage near her skull. Ashlynn suffered contusions to her chest, abdomen, left arm, back, and legs. Ashlynn was sexually assaulted causing multiple tears to her anus, a massive laceration to her rectum with massive hematoma in the area of the pelvis. The injuries to the anus and rectum of Ashlynn were sufficient to eventually cause her death even without the strangulation. The defendant [Jessica Lynn Howell] was with Prince and Ashlynn at Princes home the morning that Ashlynn was strangled, struck, and anally sodomized. Jordan Prince has already been indicted for murder, forcible sodomy, and child abuse. Prince told police he was watching the baby girl as her mother slept and became frustrated when the baby would not stop crying. He is being held on $150,000 cash-only bond as he awaits trial. Jessica Lynn Howell is in custody on a million-dollar bond.
