Innovating products and services for collaborative networks

"Collaboration and Interoperability Services in the COIN system: a scientific approach

By 2020 enterprise collaboration and interoperability services will become an invisible, pervasive and self-adaptive knowledge and business utility at disposal of the European networked enterprises from any industrial sector and domain in order to rapidly set-up, efficiently manage and effectively operate different forms of business collaborations, from the most traditional supply chains to the most advanced and dynamic business ecosystems.

The mission of the Coin Project (www.coin-ip.eu) is to study, design, develop and prototype an open, self-adaptive, generic ICT integrated solution to support the above 2020 vision, starting from notable existing research results in the field of Enterprise Interoperability and Enterprise Collaboration. COIN is an integrated project in the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme - EU FP7 Project 216256 The Enterprise Interoperability (EI) concepts and paradigms are being widely accepted as a mean to improve European Industry competitiveness with respect of the globalized world and markets. The research activity in this domain, especially the one supported by the European Commission, has led to significant results and the main technological gaps have been removed or at least addressed, as it may be assumed by the analysis of the projects included in the Future Internet Enterprise Systems (FInES) Cluster (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/enet/ei_en.html). In this context and with the aim to support the above 2020 vision, the COIN FP7 integrated project (Collaboration and Interoperability for networked enterprises, www.coin-ip.eu) is developing an advanced integrated solution, made of a secure Generic Service Platform providing the European Industry (and mostly SMEs) with EI and EC (Enterprise Interoperability and Collaboration) services, under innovative business models inspired by the SaaS-U paradigm (Software as a Service-Utility). The COIN EI / EC services are devoted to support the life-cycle of business-oriented collaborations, from their preparation in proper long-term environments, to their formation matching business opportunities with possessed competencies, to their operations and management by measuring and governing proper performance indicators, till to their dissolution and the re-use of the experience gained. Moreover, COIN EC services will support the development of some Future Internet Enterprise Applications, namely collaborative product development, production planning and project management.

In addition, the COIN ICT integrated solution and service platform is suitable for exposing, integrating, composing and mashing up existing and innovative Enterprise Interoperability and Enterprise Collaboration software and services in a secure and adaptive way. In order to support the dissemination of COIN novel concepts and approaches and to gain wide scientific recognition from the scientific as well as industrial community in the field, the COIN project is directly supporting this workshop by providing latest development and current project results in the Enterprise Interoperability and Collaboration fields and in the scientific applicable domains of EI / EC Services. Part of the workshop will be dedicated to the announcement of the COIN Book: the initiative launched by the COIN Project to support and foster the scientific publication level and recognition of COIN novel concepts and approaches and improve the dissemination process by collecting all the relevant information and scientific achievement in the Enterprise Interoperability and Collaboration and the COIN context in a single volume. The first contributions for the edition of the final COIN Book will be illustrated during the session. The workshop will contribute also in the validation and the consolidation of recommendations and suggestions aimed at facilitating the adoption of the COIN service platform model and EC/EI services at wide European level. Aims of the workshops are:

Increase the awareness on the potential associated to EI/EC models adoption; Contribute to the scientific research on the Collaboration and Interoperability and similar domains; Sharing with the participants COINs planned contribution to the Commissions FinES Cluster and relevant developments.

Background of the organizers

Bremen Institute for Production and Logistic GmbH designs develops and implements methods and tools to support inter-organisational company networks. The research focuses on designing efficient and effective processes by applying information and communication technologies while the main aspect is the collaboration in distributed production processes including end-of-life processes. It develops new value added concepts by applying regional ICT infrastructures, designs and validates scenarios to make use of physical infrastructures like for the realisation of inter-modal logistics chains. Another area of research is the definition of requirements to prepare the development of private and public services in regions. VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) is an impartial multidisciplinary expert organisation. VTTs special strength is its ability to create new, globally competitive technologies and innovations by combining knowledge and expertise in different fields. VTT produces research, development, testing and information services to public sector and companies as well as international organisations and provides high-end technology solutions and innovation services. From its wide knowledge base, VTT can combine different technologies, create new innovations and a substantial range of world class technologies and applied research services. Through its international scientific and technology network, VTT can produce information, upgrade technology knowledge, and create business intelligence and value added to its stakeholders. VTTs technological focus areas are applied materials, bio and chemistry processes, energy, information and communication technologies, industrial systems management, micro-technologies and electronics, and technology in the community. TXT e-Solutions is a private, mid-sized software vendor and system integration company, with its headquarters in Milan and growing branch offices in Genoa, Turin, Bari, Rome, Vicenza, Paris and Lyon (F), Barcelona (E), Chemnitz and Halle (D), London (UK) and New York (US. TXT is a technology intensive Company, offering to its customers complete solutions, based upon kernel products, high-level competence on enabling, innovative IT and specific knowhow in a number of application domains. It acts on the market through four business divisions: Industry & Retail Division, Media & Telco Division, Aerospace & Defense Division, Banking & Finance Division. The CRS TXT Division (Corporate Research and Innovation), led by Sergio Gusmeroli, is in charge of mediumto-long term research activities and is / has recently been active in several collaboration projects at Regional, National and European level.
