Comparing the Question Sentence from the Student and Novel

Writing is a medium of communication that represents language through the inscription of signs and symbols. In most languages, writing is a complement to speech or spoken language. Within a language system, writing relies on many of the same structures as speech, such as vocabulary, grammar and semantics, with the added dependency of a system of signs or symbols, usually in the form of a formal alphabet. The result of writing is generally called text, and the recipient of text is called a reader. Motivations for writing include publication, storytelling, correspondence and diary. Writing has been instrumental in keeping history, dissemination of knowledge through the media and the formation of legal systems. Under the influence of technologies such as data storage and computer networks, the pace of correspondence and potential for collaboration increased. As human societies emerged, the development of writing was driven by pragmatic exigencies such as exchanging information, maintaining financial accounts, codifying laws and

recording history. Around the 4th millennium BCE, the complexity of trade and administration in Mesopotamia outgrew human memory, and writing became a more dependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form. The purpose of this paper is to compare the most common error made question sentences between students from the first semester until the seventh semester and the novel with use auxiliary verb. Richard Nordquist explains WH question is a term in generative grammar for a question that is formed with an interrogative word (what, who, whom, whose, which, when, where, why, or how) and that expects an answer other than "yes" or "no." Contrast with yes-no question. In English there are seven WH questions. What is used for a thing, who is used for a person, why is used for a reason, when is used for a time or date, which is used for a choice, where is used for a place and how is used for an amount or the way. We use WH questions word to ask detailed information to go with the main ideas that have identified in a reading. In the SVU (Sweet Valley University) novels, there are some question sentences but many question sentences not correctly. In the case of study questions sentence a rhetorical questions is incorrect. The rhetorical question is usually defined as any question asked for a purpose other than to obtain the information the question asks. (Brigham Young University). According to Modern English book by Marcella Frank auxiliary verbs are helping verbs that add structural meaning or a semantic coloring to verb carrying the full burden of lexical meaning. All auxiliaries share to ability to

be directly followed by not in negatives and to be reversed with the subject in question. But in discussion focus in question. Based on the data that I have collected from the first until the seventh semester I find out mistake that made by student in making question sentence by use auxiliary verb. They are still confused to make question tense by using are, most of them do not know differences between verbal and nominal sentence; in addition they do not know the tenses that used and mastering the English structure well. Automatically their writing will cause misunderstanding for the readers, because the readers cannot receive the massage or expression of their idea well. Most of the students still find problems in using it, because of their limited mastery, especially in using auxiliary verb for question sentence. In the novels SVU there mistake of making question sentence and they not used the rule in make it. After question word they do not put the auxiliary or any other same structures as speech. According to the results of the research done by the students of the first semester until the seventh semester in making question sentence, most of the students find difficulties, especially in using auxiliary verb. So, they will make mistakes and errors. It describes that students ability in making question is still poor and they need to be taught more effectively. Especially for the first semester they need more learn about auxiliary verb and know what the tenses they used, and for the seventh semester they have to know how to make question sentence with auxiliary verb

correctly. And the writer can classified that the most common error that have made in the novel Sweet Valley University is often found the rhetorical questions To conclude, the most common error that have made in the novel Sweet Valley University there are some rhetorical questions in it, while the writer have to obey the structure rule in make question sentence. And for the students must be able to master and apply the auxiliary verb correctly especially for making question sentence. Especially for the seventh semester, they should be mastering the concept for making question sentence with auxiliaries.
