Any trait, or small trick, or hack, anything, other than some trivia or fact. Something one can learn in 10 minutes or so (and perhaps with a bit of practice every day, can excel at it), but it must be useful for the person for the remainder of his or her life. Edit

How to speed-read. Following along with your finger is excellent if you want to read a little faster, but speed-reading requires a completely different set of mechanics. Brief background: I learned how to speed-read after some googling. I did this search because I had AP Bio and AP Econ summer reading due in about 12 hours, I hadn't even begun, and I did not want to spend 12 hours reading. I tried to find the page, and I'll add it in as an edit if I can find it. I learned to speed read because of my own laziness, but on a bad day I read at least 5 or 6 times as fast as I used to. Let's start with basics. Most people read word by word, and often say the words to themselves using the voices in their heads. Why do we do this? I fully blame kindergarten reading programs, which force children to read out loud both in class and at home. Who thought of this? Anyway, that is not at all the most effective way to read, in terms of both speed and comprehension. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is eliminate the voice inside your head. This took me at least 1 hour to do. Read with your eyes. ONLY. Whatever you do don't use the voice inside your head. As you learn to do this part go ahead and read word by word and go over the lines with your finger. Just work on eliminating the voice. Why? You cannot say words nearly as fast as you can comprehend them, believe it or not. Don't limit your reading speed to your speaking speed. This process really sucks, by the way. If you really believe that the voice in your mind is your enemy, you will probably be extremely frustrated for the first half hour of your journey. You may get better, then get a snack, then come back to continue your training and realize you are back where you started. Feelings of hopelessness will arise. Be a man/woman, and push on. A tip for those who are having trouble not subvocalizing is to hold your breath as you read. As Sean O'Connor pointed out, we breathe out as we read, even when we do so silently, since we're used to speaking the words aloud. A lot of the time, you even notice yourself making movements with your mouth, though it's closed. Hold your breath as you begin trying to eliminate subvocalization. Breathe in when you need to. (Don't force discomfort or anything) Once you feel that you've effectively eliminated that voice, try to return to normal breathing. Remember to use breathholding as a crutch whenever you are having trouble. It has no noticeable effect on your speed or comprehension, and it helps immensely when you are having a rough time. Once you are able to pretty much eliminate the voice inside your head, you have unlocked a huge amount of potential in terms of how fast you can now read. Since you're reading with your eyes, try reading two or three words at a time, and then move up once you get comfortable. Trust me, if you don't skip the voice elimination step, you will make progress fast. After a couple days I was reading pages out of an assigned novel within 15-20 seconds, the book was The Guide, and with full comprehension. I am not exaggerating. This is when I got really in the zone of course. Not having the initial tunnel vision can be frustrating but after about 10 minutes you get it down and you fly through pages. I was reading about a line at a time. One tip I have that helped me read more words at a time is to think about opening your eyes REALLY WIDE. Actively try to take in as many words at a time as you can and try to move along the lines as fast as you can while doing this. You'll build your own rhythm eventually. Hopefully this helps someone. It really helped me. I was able to finish estimated hour-long reading assignments in 10 minutes or less. I'm out practice right now, but I want to get back into it this summer so I can complete the books listed on the answer wiki for Books: What are some potentially life-changing books? P.S. Here's a link (thanks Mike Stenhouse) that teaches you a lot of about speedreading technique. The explanation it gives encompasses a lot of what I've said, and I found it pretty useful in cleaning up how I read and in increasing my reading ability generally: Scientific Speed Reading: How to Read 300% Faster in 20 Minutes Upvote 105+ Comments Share (83) Thank Report Updated 18 Aug Garrick Saito Suggest Bio Votes by Viola Yee, Faisal Khan, Sanjay Sabnani, Kaushik Chakraborty, and 964 more.

Take a whole number and add up its digits. If the result has more than one digit, add all of the digits again and keep doing this until you have one digit. Call the result the RSOD, the Reduced Sum Of Digits. For example to get the RSOD of 32987 add 3+2+9+8+7 to get 29. Now add 2+9 to get 11. Now add 1+1 to get 2. So the RSOD is 2. Here's why this is useful. If you add two numbers, the RSOD of the result is the RSOD of the sums of the RSODs. This means you can check any addition by checking single digit RSODs. For example consider this calculation 132+991 = 1223 The RSOD of 132 is 6.

(23) Tips and Hacks for Everyday Life: What is something useful I can learn right now in 10 minutes that would be useful for the rest of my life? - Quora
The RSOD of 991 is 1. So we expect the RSOD of the answer to be 7. So let's check. RSOD of 1223 is 1+2+2+3 = 8. It's not 7. So now we know that the original calculation was wrong. But that's not all. It works for multiplication too. But even that's not all, it works for subtraction too. There's a slight catch because you might need to subtract a bigger RSOD from a smaller one. But there's a trick. If this is going to happen, just add 9 to the smaller one. It'll still give the correct result. But even that still isn't all. It'll work for any exact decimal calculation whether or not they are whole numbers. For example consider 14.32 32.98 = 472.2736 RSOD 14.32 = 1 RSOD 32.98 = 4 RSOD 472.2736 = 4 = 1 4 The original multiplication was correct so the RSODs multiply correctly. (It works for exact division too but rather than give the rule for that I suggest looking at divisions as multiplications and use the method for multiplications.) Even with a calculator on every phone I still find this useful again and again. Update: I think I omitted to mention that an RSOD of 9 should be treated exactly like a RSOD of 0. So if you get a 9 anywhere in the process, just replace it with zero. Upvote 22+ Comments Share (18) Thank Report Updated 8 Aug Carlos J. Amezquita, Change your thoughts and you'll change your world.

I just tested it on my iPhone, but it should work with all the phones with 'Airplane Mode' I guess. It's quite simple actually. Your phone charges much much faster (for obvious reasons) if you switch it off. But considering no one likes to go through that pain of switching on and off your mobiles these days, Airplane Mode becomes your saviour if you're running short on time!

The Socratic method.

Why the Socratic method you ask? The Socratic method was named after the classical Greek philosopher Socrates and introduced in the 4th century BC Socratic dialogue . It has common applications in law school, teaching, psychotherapy, and human management resources and training. People in those industries and the layman alike can use it to: Build stronger beliefs in arguments, and eliminate misshapen or broken ones. Point out fallacies or flaws in thinking. Clarify feelings or insights about personal actions. Plan out the main train of thought in lessons. Test the logical foundation of any argument out there. Here are the basics: 1. Locate the main argument in a statement or a statement that sums up an argument. In other words, what is the defining argument that sums up a particular statement? Ask your opponent to sum up their argument if you're stuck on step 1. Socrates asked fellow people questions like: ''What is justice?'' or ''What is k nowledge?''. He then let or asked them to make declarative statements like: ''Justice is x because of y.'' 2. Investigate the implications of their argument. Assume that their argument is false and find an example or scenario to prove that the argument is flawed in some way. Say someone is trying to prove that a particular car is green. It seems like common sense at first, but then, using the Socratic method, you can come up with a counter argument to prove the limits of the argument like: ''Is the car still green to a blind person?'' If they say no, then proceed to step 3. If they say yes, ask: ''Why isn't it pink , blue, or purple?'' or ''If they can't see, then what mak es the car green?'' The most important thing is to back your counter argument up with scenarios and examples when they try to defend their own argument. 3. Change their initial argument and take the exception into account. Once you have came up with a reasonable argument to disprove theirs, change their argument so it takes the new argument into account. So change the original argument ''The car is green'' to an agreeable position like: ''It's green to those who can see.''

4. Attack the new argument with another question. Ask your opponent: ''If you agree that it's green to those who can see, then is it green to other animals who can see?'' Eventually, you will possibly come to a conclusion which your opponent agrees with but completely contradicts their first argument. The fun of the Socratic method is you have the potential to generate an infinite amount of questions, and an infinite amount of discussions. 5. Practice. Obviously, you're probably not going to topple the debate club leader in one go. It should take about 5-10 minutes to learn, but several weeks to months if you want to become a well-versed expert in the field of debate, including the Socratic method. But as Socrates said, If you want to be a good saddler, saddle the worst horse; for if you can tame one, you can tame all. So start off small like I did by using the Socratic method in daily life discussions with family and friends, and work your way up to more complex arguments in topics that you're highly interested in or enjoy. Here's a useful link to get you started on becoming better at practicing a skill: The Only Way to Become Amazingly Great at Something Here's a handy example: Teacher: ''Student, what is goodness?'' Student: ''Teacher, goodness is when you give something to some one else.'' Teacher: ''Is it good to give someone a gun so they can murder someone else?'' ''Is it good if you give someones password to someone else without their k nowledge?'' ''Is it good if you give someone a pack age containing a wrapped up bomb?'' Student: ''Obviously not.'' Teacher: ''So it's good to give something to some one else, provided that what they give will not harm themselves, or other people.'' Student: ''Certainly.'' Teacher: ''If you agree that giving someone something to harm themselves or others is not good, then what about giving a poor farmer a tool to harm a chick en for a short time and k ill it, in order to benefit his starving family? Student: ''I agree that it's good for the family but not the chick en.'' Teacher: ''Yes, but you contradicted yourself when you said giving someone something to harm someone else is not good, because you clearly agreed that it's good in another application.'' Here's a descriptive introduction to Socrates and the Socratic method:

How to tell if you are about to buy a juicy orange or grapefruit, no matter what the skin looks like: Pick up the orange or grapefruit. If it feels light, it's not juicy and will taste rather woody. Go through the bin picking the ones that feel heaviest compared to oranges or grapefruits of a similar size. They'll be the tastiest ones.

I was shown this trick by a very ancient and rather irritable gentleman when I was in my early 20's. He literally slapped the orange I was about to bag out of my hand and explained his system. Thanks to him, I've enjoyed decades of juicy oranges and grapefruits. Upvote 14+ Comments Share (7) Thank Report 29 Mar, 2013 Peter Baskerville, Still figuring it out. Votes by Marc Bodnick, James H. Learning the actual measurement of your span and your foot will help you whenever your need to measure something but don't have access to a ruler or tape measure. You can then measure anything by number of spans or feet (toe to heel). Then multiply the spans or feet by the known measurement to estimate fairly accurately the actual length, depth or breadth of things. Thanks to Bob Garrish for adding 'thumb to index tip' at full spread, and 'index to pinky' (bull horns symbol) as other measurements to learn.

Other body parts you can use as units of measurement include:

The distance from the tip of the thumb to the first knuckle. Previously used to measure 1 inch or 2.54cm The distance from tip of nose to end of your thumb with your arm outstretched.

Previously used to measure a yard or 36 inches or 91.44cm. Used by ancient cloth merchants. The length from the point of your bent elbow to your middle fingertip. Previously used to measure a cubit or 18 inches or 46 cm. Used by Noah in building the ark and the Egyptians to build the pyramids. The length of rope held between two hands with the arms outstretched. Previously used to measure a fathom of 72 inches or 183cm. Used by sailors. The length of a single step from the heel on one foot to the heal of the other. Modern terminology has adopted the ancient Roman term of a pace, measuring around 30 inches or 760 mm. However, ancient Roman measurement for a pace was actually a double-pace or passus and was nominally the measure of a full stride from the position of the heel when it is raised from the ground to the point the same heel is set down again at the end of the step, being about 58.1 inches or 1.48 metres. How to learn Pythagorean triplets? 1. If the number is odd, square it and then divide by 2. The resulting number will be in the form of x.50. The other two numbers in the Pythagorean triplet will be x and x+1. Eg. Number 3. Square of 3 = 9. 9/2 = 4.50. The other numbers are 4 and 5 Lets take another example. Number 37. Square of 37 = 1369. 1369/2 = 684.50. The other numbers forming the Pythagorean triplet are 684 and 685. 2. If the number is even, halve it and then square it. The resulting number will be in the form of y(say). The other two numbers in the Pythagorean triplet will be y-1 and y+1. Eg. Number 4. Half of 4=2. Square of 2=4. The others numbers: 4-1 and 4+1, i.e 3 and 5 Another example. Number 18. Half of 18=9. Square of 9=81. The other two numbers forming the Pythagorean triplet are 80 and 82 In this way, you can now k now infinite Pythagorean triplets!!

Indian youth mostly use English as their preferred language of communication and hence often get confused when asked for direction in Hindi. Here's a quick trick to learn. Join the tip of your index finger and thumb to form a small 'o', and keep all other fingers straight. When you use your LEFT hand, it forms a small 'b', which would mean . Left Hand >> [baaye]

Anger when, gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problemsproblems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. 1. Take a break as soon as you recognize that you're angry. Stop what you're doing, get away from whatever is irritating you, and just take a breather. Getting away from whatever is upsetting you will make it infinitely easier to calm down. Try it out in these situations

97

If you're experiencing road rage, pull over on a side road and turn off the car. If you're angry at work, go to to a room or step outside for a moment. If you drive to work, consider sitting in your car so that you're in a space you own. If you're upset at home, go to a single-occupancy space (such as the bathroom) or for a walk. If you're experiencing anger in an unfamiliar place, don't just wander off by yourself. Tell whoever you're with that you need a short mental vacation, and ask that he or she stand a few extra paces away from you. Close your eyes

and try to imagine yourself somewhere peaceful. 2. Breathe deeply. If your heart hammers with rage, slow it down by controlling your breathing. Count to three as you inhale, hold the breath in your lungs for three more seconds, and count to three again as you exhale. Focus only on the numbers as you do this, and refuse to think about whatever is angering you. Repeat as many times as necessary.

3. Go to a "happy place". If you're still having a difficult time calming down, imagine yourself in a scene you find incredibly relaxing. It could be your childhood backyard, a quiet forest, a solitary island - whatever locale makes you feel at home and peaceful. Focus on imagining every detail of this place: the light, the noises, the temperature, the weather, the smells. Keep dwelling on your happy place until you feel completely immersed in it, and hang out there for a few minutes or until you feel calm.

4. And still if it doesn't work, remember the best time you have spend, remember every happy situation possible if you can. It can be with your mother, friends, or your partner.Try to bring a smile on your face by remembering such incidents. 5. Practice positive self-talk. When you're ready, "discuss" the situation with yourself in positive and relieving terms. For example, if you experience road rage, you could try: "That guy almost sideswiped me, but maybe he was experiencing an emergency and I'll probably never have to see him again. I feel lucky that I'm alive and my car is unscratched. I'm fortunate that I can still drive. I can continue to be calm and focused when I get back on the road."

If you find a form of positive self-talk that really works for you, make it a mantra. Repeat it to yourself as many times as you need to in order to return to the right frame of mind. 6. Ask for the support of someone you trust. If you're still upset, sharing your concerns with a close friend or confidant might help.

Clearly express what you want from the other person. If you just want a sounding board, state at the beginning that you don't want help or advice, just sympathy. If you're looking for a solution, let the other person know. Set a time limit. Give yourself a set amount of time to vent about what's upsetting you, and stick to it - when time is up, your rant is over. This will help you move on instead of dwelling on the situation endlessly. 7. Try to see some humor in what angered you. After you've calmed down and established that you're ready to get over the incident, try to see the lighter side. Casting the incident in a humorous light can help you maintain positivity and avoid getting angry over the same thing next time.

1.

1. Either/or Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. dumb | little | man 2. Quotes If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. "dumb little man" will only find that exact phrase. dumb "little man" will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man". 3. Not If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. -dumb little man will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb". 4. Similar terms Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. ~dumb little man -dumb will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man". 5. Wildcard The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. can't * me love lyrics will return the Beatles song you're looking for. 7. Definitions Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. define:dumb will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links. 8. Calculator One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation. (3 4/5 + 2 1/8)-(1 1/12)*2 9. Numrange This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, best books 2002..2007 will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers). 10. Site-specific Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. site:dumblittleman.com leo will search for the term "leo" only within this blog. 11. Backlinks The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however. link:dumblittleman.com 12. Vertical search Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Types of numbers Google algorithms can recognize patterns in numbers you enter, so you can search for: Telephone area codes Vehicle ID number (US only) Federal Communications Commission (FCC) equipment numbers (US only) UPC codes Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airplane registration number (US only) Patent numbers (US only). Example Patent 5123123 Even stock quotes (using the stock symbol) or a weather forecast regarding the next five days Package Tracking (UPS, Fedex, or USPS). Example: 1Z9999W99999999999 17. If you ever need to write up a document/documents filled with mathematical symbols (or any other special character that is difficult to insert into a document), here's a solution: 1. Insert all your required symbols just on an arbitrary line in the document, for easy access. 2. Open up the configuration for your word processor, and find the autocorrection/auto-replacement settings. 3. Add auto-correction rules for each of your symbols, assigning them a kind of 'command word' that can be easily typed. An example is "/pi" (no quotes), that would auto-correct to the actual Greek character. Now, after just a few minutes of setup, you can save yourself potentially hours of having to stop typing and use the mouse to navigate menus, just to find a particular special character! :) Upvote 8+ Comments Share (1) Thank Report 18 Dec

You may know that sleep is divided into five stages. Polyphasic sleep concentrates on the fifth and most important stage of sleep, rapid eye movement (REM.) This is the most beneficial stage of sleep; it is when the brain is most active and is when dreaming occurs. REM is the only stage of sleep that is actually required to survive and function normally. The interesting part of all this is that you only spend 1 to 2 hours in this stage of sleep every night. The other 6 or so hours spent asleep every night are seemingly wasted. Polyphasic sleep cycles basically cut out the other useless phases, giving you an additional 4 to 6 hours of time awake.

The trick involves tricking your brain into immediately entering the REM stage of sleep, skipping the other four. Everyone has experienced this at some point in their life. If youve gone a long period of time without sleep, and take a nap, you will find that you immediately start dreaming. This happens because your body is trying to catch up on lost REM sleep. The premise of polyphasic sleep then, is to train your body to enter REM sleep at multiple set times during the day with short 20 minute naps. If you are a fan of lucid dreaming , you will enjoy this even more because you will pretty much automatically become lucid while you sleep, without trying, multiple times per day.

There are six different ways to accomplish this, which I will outline below. Monophasic Sleep This is the most common way that almost everyone sleeps. However, it is completely unnecessary and only popular because you have been raised to sleep this way and are now conditioned to it. It involves sleeping 8 hours, with 2 hours of total REM sleep.

Polyphasic Sleep Cycles This is where the fun starts. There are five commonly accepted polyphasic sleeping cycles, and none is better than the other. What you need to do is pick what works best with your schedule. The Uberman, for

example, would not work for a 9-5 worker. The siesta might be more effective in that case. The five different cycles are listed in order of difficulty, with the Siesta being the easiest, and the Uberman being the hardest. The Siesta This sleep cycle is actually pretty common around the world in warmer countries such as Latin America, where the temperature is so hot during the middle of the day that people retire to take a short nap after lunch. It involves 6 hours of core sleep and one short 20-30 minute nap. You will find in these countries that most shops close during the early afternoon, as everyone is busy taking their siestas!

The Everyman (2 nap, 3 nap, 4 nap) The Everyman is basically like a climbing ladder that details how much many naps are required depending on how much core sleep you want to cut. Each nap shaves off an astounding hour and 40 minutes from your core sleeping time.

The Uberman The Uberman is only for the most hardcore polyphasic sleepers. It involves six evenly spread out naps every four hours and completely eliminates any core sleep you may have needed before. It is the most difficult cycle to get used to, but once accomplished, you sleep for two hours a night, freeing up the other twenty-two to do whatever you want.

So, ultimately your sleeping schedule can be one of the below:

Memorize the Rhyming peg or the Shape peg ( It will hardly take 5 minute and it's a one time task) You can also develop your own rhymes and shapes. Better Stick to one method for start. This is how it works You associate each item in the list with a previously learned "peg word" that represents the numerical position of the item. Here is an example for memorizing the zodiac in order with the 'Rhyme pegs'. Try to visualize the associations as you read along 1. Aries (Ram) 2. Taurus (Bull) 3. Gemini (Twins) 4. Cancer (Crab) 5. Leo (Lion) 6. Virgo (Virgin) 7. Libra (Scales) 8. Scorpio (Scorpion) 9. Sagittarius (Archer) 10. Capricorn (Goat) 12. Pisces (Fish) Bun Shoe Tree Door Hive Sticks Heaven Gate Line Hen Shelve A ram with a bun caught in its horns A bull in high heels Tweedledum and Tweedledee up a tree Closing a door against crab army. Bees attacking a lion :) A girl twirling batons Clouds in the shape of a set of scales A giant scorpion opening the Gate A Line created by shooting arrows Hen riding goats Pouring water over bread dough A shelf of fish heads

11. Aquarius (Water-carrier) Leaven

Try to recall the zodiac in orders Once successfully done, Try to associate your peg system with any other list to feel the power of your visual memory. You can try this example. 1. Banana 2. laptop 3. Porsche 4. Tennis 5. Google 6. Lizard 7. Clock 8. Mustache 9. Rolls Royce 10. Typewriter

How to never have road rage again: No matter what the person on the road is doing that is inspiring anger in you, come up with a story to explain their behavior that you would find plausible and forgivable. Extra points for creativity. Example: The person in front of you is driving 20 miles slower than necessary. Imagine they are trying to get a wedding cake to the reception in perfect condition. They know they are creating a slowdown, but there is nothing they can do about it. They are so sorry they are creating a hazard unintentionally, but this cake is really, really important for this special day. Example: A guy cuts you off speeding crazily on the road. Imagine their wife is pregnant in the back seat and they are trying to get to the nearest hospital before she gives birth. He normally doesn't behave this way and he doesn't mean any harm. The end result of coming up with creative stories like this is that you stop going into fight-or-flight physiologically, thinking you are being threatened by people who don't care about your life or safety. Once you can identify with others as imperfect human beings who do not mean you harm, you can relax, stay calm, and FIDO: Forget It and Drive On. Here is a nice simple way to add hours and minutes together:

Let's add 1 hr and 35 minutes and 3 hr 55 minutes together. What you do is this: make the 1 hr 35 minutes into one number, which will give us 135 and do the same for the other number, 3 hours 55 minutes, giving us 355 Now you want to add these two numbers together: 135 355 ____ 490 So we now have a sub total of 490. What you need to do to this and all sub totals is add the time constant of 40. No matter what the hours and minutes are, just add the 40 time constant to the sub total. 490 + 40 = 530 so we can now see our answer is 5 hrs and 30 minutes! To Square a number which ends with 5 use this below technique !! Let's take 75 as example!! For all these numbers the last two digits will always be 25. (5 ^2 = 25) Now comes the trick, just multiply the number before 5 with the next immediate number. In our case 7* 8 = 56 And The answer is 5625 !! Works like a Charm!! It will be quite useful when you use it to find squares of number (which ends with 5 ) up to three digits. P.S. It is not a limitation till 3 digits, It works but it will certainly be difficult to multiply 3 plus digit numbers !! Simple Vedic Math For millennia, purportedly, ancient Hindus used simple and quick methods of performing a wide variety of complex calculations in mathematics. Vedic Math, however, was brought to attention(and many claim, invented by) by a Hindu scholar and mathematician, Bharati Krishna Tirthaji . Vedic Math is widely and mistakenly regarded as a system unto itself, whereas, it simply is a set of sixteen formulae that are strategies for various levels of mathematical computations(including imaginary numbers, calculus, and progressive series). Controversies or not, there is no denying that the method is mighty useful and extremely undervalued. For those who aren't aware already, I'm going to show five simple things that you could do with Vedic Math that will be useful to you every time you do a little bit of math, for your whole life.

279

1. Subtraction from powers of ten When subtracting a number from a power of ten(10, 100, 1000 etc.), Subtract all the digits of the number from nine except for the last. Subtract the last from ten. For eg., you want to perform 1000 - 564. You subtract 5 and 6 from 9, and 4 from 10.

You avoid the whole borrow-from step completely, saving you a ton of time. Of course, it's just regular math that you do anyway, but approach differently. 2. Squaring numbers close to powers of ten For example, the square of the number 8. First find its nearest power of ten. (10) Find its difference from the base (here, 10-8= 2). Subtract the same difference to the number. (8 - 2 = 6) <-- first digit Square the difference( square 2 = 4) <-- second digit As you can see, the answer is 64. The same can be done for numbers above a base of ten.

We can apply this formula to multiples of ten, like 10, 20, 30, 40, 100, 150, 250 etc. But for the purposes of this answer, we will not focus on them because we're running out of the allotted ten minutes. 3. Squaring multiples of five

The formula used here translates to by one more than the previous one. The same formula is used for calculating vulgar fractions with denominators ending with 9, and linear equations. Let us square 25 in this example: The last two digits are always 5 ^ 2 = 25. Apply by one more than the previous one. Here, the previous digit is 2. One more than that is 3. The "by" in this formula is used for multiplication. Therefore, you multiply 2 with 2+1=3. So, 2x3=6. Append the result of the formula before the original number. Therefore, you get 625. For a three digit number, you would consider the first two digits as the "previous number". Therefore, 135 ^ 2 = 13 x 14 || 25 = 18225 Which brings us to, 4. Multiplication of numbers close to powers of ten How many times have you encountered huge numbers starting with a '9' that you wished you could just multiply in seconds? Fortunately, you will know now. Let us consider the example of 96 x 92. Write the numbers one below the other Calculate their deficiency from the nearest power of ten(100, in this case) and write the difference beside each number. (100-96=4, 100-92=8) Subtract crosswise, i.e, subtract from one number the difference from power of ten of another. (92 - 4) The answer would be the same for both numbers. Write that down as the left part of the product. Multiply the differences. This is the right part of the product. Append the numbers. Here's an image demonstrating the same example:

You could apply this formula for any lenght of numbers. Only bear in mind that the number of digits of each product is close to the base of ten(one digit if 10, 2 digits if 100, and so on). You will be surprised at how fast you can calculate products of large numbers. 9998 x 9999? No problem! (9998-1) || (1x2) = 9997||0002 The system is a little complicated for numbers near other bases of ten, like 20 or 60. ... This takes less than 10 minutes and will change your life. If you want something, learn to ask for it. The worst that can happen is a no, in which case you'll be no better off than when you started. This can apply to asking for a raise, asking someone out on a date, asking for advice and asking for help. I think people can be too embarrassed about asking or fear the imagined consequences of rejection or a no that they do not ask enough.

By writing the ideas as a list, you have unknowingly assigned a serial structure to the problem and eliminated possibilities that might arise from the interaction of individual ideas. Instead, write the ideas randomly in different spaces of the page/whiteboard. When done, take a 50,000 feet view and look for synergies between ideas. This technique aids big picture thinking and leads to better problem solutions. Upvote 4+ Comments Share Thank Report Updated 22 May, 2013 Shilpa Sharma, Student, Introvert, Boring. understand, and yet one of the most beneficial ones. And I say this from personal experience. I will just introduce the basics (since that is all I know). The web has a pretty good amount of information available in case someone is interested in knowing more. What does it look like?

What is the procedure? 1. Sit up straight and close your eyes. 2. Form this mudra (gesture) with your right hand: Keep the middle finger and the index finger straight and place them in the middle of your forehead (that's where the ajya chak ra is). Close your right nostril with the thumb. 3. With the right nostril blocked, exhale through the left nostril. 4. Inhale back through the left nostril itself. 5. Now, close the left nostril with the ring finger and the little finger and exhale through the right nostril. 6. Inhale back through the right nostril. 7. Loop. Benefits? Each one adds one. A Google search on "benefits of anulom-vilom" will lead you to hundreds of pages and articles. Everywhere you will find a new point, primarily because pranayams affect each one differently and have been seen to cure (or pace the treatment of) diseases ranging from common-cold to cancer (since it essentially enhances the oxygen intakewhich is a BIG benefit in itself). This I speak from what I have seen and heard people say about themselves on television. Here are some references that should be convincing. To know more, Google is waiting for you. :) Anulom Vilom and Ekapadasana can prove to be an effective alternative modality for treating children with ADHD Effect of anulom vilom and bhasrika on vital capacity and maximal ventilatory volume on Academicjournals.org EEG signal analysis during anulom-vilom Alternate nostril breathing (ANB) pryma, also known as Nadisuddhi pryma, is one of the beneficial pryma for cardiopulmonary functions. Your thinking becomes positive and you learn to overcome tension, anger, worry and forgetfulness, anxiety, uneasiness, high blood pressure, migraine and lack of sleep. With regular practise of Anulom-Vilom Pranayam, your concentration, patience, resoluteness, decision-making ability and creativity will soon increase. (Renowned Yoga Guru, Surakshit Goswami) The exercise of the Anuloma Viloma produces optimum function to both sides of the brain: that is optimum creativity and optimum logical verbal activity. This will make both sides of the brain, the left side which is responsible for logical thinking and the right side which is responsible for creative thinking to function properly. This will lead to a balance between a person's creative and logical thinking. The Yogis consider this to be the best technique to calm the mind and the Nervous System . How can you estimate time remaining in case you forgot to take your watch and your mobile phone is out of battery? Extend your arm fully and count the number of finger widths between the sun and the horizon. Each finger is about 15 minutes, which means each hand width should be about an hour. Remember that this is just an estimate, so if you want to be conservative, make sure to give yourself a bit more time than you measure if you want to get home before dark.

According to Telling Time Using Only Your Hand you need to know the time of sunrise first but I found it works well even when I don't know the time of the sunrise since I am estimating and not finding the exact time. like your shading your eyes from the sun. "Pinky" on the start of the horizon. From the bottom of your "Pinky" to the top of your "Pointer" finger,.. that's one hour! So for example, Starting at the horizon, lets say that it's three hand withs, stacked on top of each other, to the bottom of the sun...This means it's been light for 3 hours. If sunrise was at 6:00am, that would mean that it's now 9:15 or about 9:30. (Since I've never owned a Cell phone and never wear a watch, this has always been close enough for me.) The bottom two fingers equals 30 minuets. Practise it and depending on whether you are in a jungle or in the city this trick can work as a life saver or an impressive trick. Fine, I will share my secret with everyone. My favorite hack is the rubber band trick. For example, to open a tight jar, wrap a rubber band around the lid to help your hands obtain a tight grip. Then twist. It works much better than cloths. And you can pretty much apply this trick to anything that involves twisting. For example, sometimes I have difficulty rotating that little switch on a lamp because the switch is so small to get a tight grip on, so all I do is wrap a rubber band around it and keep it on there.

No one should put double knots in dress shoes. Plus, this has the benefit of having the laces lay down flat. I attempted to find a video of it, but no luck. It is really simple to do though. Tie your shoelaces just as you normally would. When you have made the first loop with your one side and are about to wrap the other lace around it, do it in the opposite direction. Instead of encircling the loop from closest to your body, over, and under, do the opposite. Start under and come up from the outside over the top toward the inside. If your first loop is in your left hand, it will be counter clockwise motion. Pull it through normally once done. Updated with video:

People feel flattered when you remember them, and will want to know your name in response, which will help them remember you better, too. One study I read came to the finding that people prefer hearing their own name to hearing almost anything else. Hearing your own name spoken by another is a reassuring affirmation of your existence and importance. Names are important! So, how? Many of us are terrible at remembering names. Here are some tricks: Repeat someone's name when you first hear it. "What's your name? Michael? Oh, nice to meet you, Michael." When meeting someone, find a way to make their name have personal significance to you. "Oh, Michael! That's my cousin's name. Do you prefer Michael or Mike?" If it's a name you're unfamiliar with, ask questions about it. "Oh, Mikhal! That's a name I'm not familiar with. Mikhal. How do you spell it? What culture does it come from? Mikhal - what an interesting name!" While doing this, you'll have plenty of opportunities to say the name over and over, cementing it in your memory. It will also make a person feel good, and you can learn a lot about someone through the name conversation. Whenever you address a person, address them by name. It will help you to remember their name, and will keep you in the habit of remembering other people's names. It will also make people happier, and they will respond to you better. Try it! You can be forgiven for forgetting someone's name after the first time you meet them, so ask promptly if you realize you've forgotten it. Ask any time you've forgotten someone's name, and if it's embarrassing, it will make you seem human, down-to-earth and honest. People will want to help you remember who they are - it is ego-affirming. This simple skill may make you more friends, land you business opportunities, get you dates and open all kinds of doors for you. Remember people's names! Easy ways to do rough conversions between some imperial units to the metric system Hopefully this won't be useful for the rest of your life because the few countries that do not use the metric system will come to some sense before the end of your life. But in all likelihood, it will be useful for the rest of your life. Note: These are not meant to be exact conversions, but to give you an approximation that is easy to do mentally and that will be good for most situations that do not require exact precision. Temperature: From Fahrenheit to Celsius (step 1) Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature (step 2) Divide the result by 2 Example: 50F -> (step 1) 50-32 = 18 -> (step 2) 18/2 = 9 So 50F convert to roughly 9C If you want to be more precise, multiply the result of step 1 by 5/9 instead of dividing it by 2. But dividing by two should be a good enough approximation for most purposes.

Temperature: From Celsius to Fahrenheit Just do the opposite of the F to C conversion explained above. (step 1) Multiply the Celsius temperature by 2 (step 2) Add 32 to the result Example: 9C -> (step 1) 9*2 = 18 -> (step 2) 18+32 = 50 So 9C convert to roughly 50F Weight: From pounds (lbs) to kilograms (kg) (step 1) Subtract 10% from the lbs measure (step 2) Divide the result by 2 Example: 60 lbs -> (step 1) 60 - (10% of 60, which is 6) = 54 -> (step 2) 54/2 = 27 So 60 lbs convert to approximately 27 kg You can also just divide the lbs measure by 2.2, but I find that it is much easier to do the 2 steps above if you are doing it mentally. Weight: From kilograms (kg) to pounds (lbs) Just do the opposite of the lbs to kg conversion explained above. (step 1) Multiply the kg measure by 2 (step 2) Add 10% to the result Or you can just multiply by 2.2 Example: 20 kg -> (step 1) 20*2 = 40 -> (step 2) 40+(10% fo 40, which is 4) = 44, or simply 2.2*20 = 44 So 20 kg convert to approximately 44 lbs Length: From feet to meters (step 1) Multiply the feet measure by 3 (step 2) Divide the result by 10 Example: 10 feet -> (step 1) 10*3 = 30 -> (step 2) 30/10 = 3 So 10 feet convert to approximately 3 meters Or if you find it easy to do decimal multiplications mentally, just multiply the feet measure by 0.3 (or 0.28 if you want to be more exact).

Length: From meters to feet (step 1) Multiply the meters measure by 10 (step 2) Divide the result by 3 Example: 3 meters -> (step 1) 3*10 = 30 -> (step 2) 30/3 = 10 So 3 meters convert to approximately 10 feet Or if you find it easy to do decimal multiplications mentally, just multiply the meters measure by 3.3 (or 3.28 if you want to be more exact). Area: From squared feet to squared meters (step 1) Subtract 10% from the squared feet measure (step 2) Divide the result by 10 Example: 500 squared feet -> (step 1) 500 - (10% of 500, which is 50) = 450 -> (step 2) 450/10 = 45 So 500 squared feet convert to approximately 45 squared meters Or if you find it easy to do decimal multiplications mentally, just multiply the squared feet measure by 0.09 (0.093 if you want to be more exact)

Learn to breathe peacefully. This is how you can do it: Day 1 - Just breathe in and breathe out ... let thoughts come to your mind wherever they come from. Day 2 - Pay attention to your thoughts, but ensure not to become judgmental about any of them. Day 3 - Try not to have random thoughts Day 4 - Try not to have thoughts Day 5 - Utter Peace I should not have used "Day x" rather "Task x" fits well, as each of the above mentioned things can take numerous days for you to become proficient at if you give only 10 minutes daily, however if you can spend little more than 30 minutes, you can really learn to meditate within a week. While the course is typically a 10 day silent retreat, the technique can be learned in 10 minutes. Though there are three steps, even learning and using just the first step is of lifelong value. First: Anapana In this you sit in a comfortable posture and 'Observe your breath going in and out of your nostrils'. While doing this let thoughts come and go without stressing. Just observe. Second: Vipassana In sitting posture, take your awareness to the top of your head and 'feel the sensations' - coolness, scratchiness, warmth or anything and keep moving inch by inch down to your face, then right shoulder to arm to fingers. Then from left shoulder to fingers. Then throat to abdomen, then right thigh to toes and left thighs to toes. Repeat these steps backwards to top of your head. Third: Metta / Maitri bhavana (Goodwill feeling) Close your eyes and send goodwill to all. Start with friends and family and expand to all humanity. I learnt this 2 years ago in a 10 day camp and apply it whenever I have 10 minutes or feel stressed. Works like magic! For more info visit: www.dhamma.org Here's the full description of Vipassana technique and why it is not just a life long skill but also has transformational impact. The Technique Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. Vipassana is a way of self-transformation through self-observation. deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind. It is this observation-based, self-exploratory journey to the common root of mind and body that dissolves mental impurity, resulting in a balanced mind full of love and compassion. The scientific laws that operate one's thoughts, feelings, judgements and sensations become clear. Through direct experience, the nature of how one grows or regresses, how one produces suffering or frees oneself from suffering is understood. Life becomes characterized by increased awareness, non-delusion, self-control and peace. A little trick here. 1. Hold your left hand thumb inside the fist and close it tight, 2. Put your right finger deep inside your mouth. Some thoughts: 1. Leaving a radio or television on in your motel/hotel is a low-cost antiburglar device - When you are staying in most motels/hotels,simply leaving a television or radio on to a talk show or talk radio program will convince all but the most desperate or professional of room burglars that you are still there. Unfortunately, in low-end motels , this often fails as people are in the hallways and lobbies often and can see you leave. 2. Rolling up a tabloid newspaper or a magazine makes it an effective weapon - Roll up the magazine or paper as tight as you are able and then use it by jabbing or thrusting it,especially at the neck or the head. Do not try to use it as a club (it's too fragile) 3. Leaving an unmarked key in your wallet or your purse, will prevent you from being locked out of your home - The key must be unmarked as if you lose the wallet or the purse, someone could use it to enter your home. Most of the time, people who might steal those things from you will have no idea what they key is for and will simply discard it after they have removed what they consider to be valuable from your stolen item. 4. If you don't know the size of a nut or bolt, press an piece of paper over it firmly and take it to a hardware store. They can measure the outline and provide you with a fastener of that correct size. 5. There's no need to leave your name on your personal voicemail - Anyone who calls you will leave you a message. If they are a bill collector or someone who you don't want to deal with, then not returning their call will make most of them believe that they have the wrong number. If they know you , then there's no reason for you to tell them who it is who they are calling. Simply request that they leave a detailed message and that you'll return their call. 6. Always keep three or four ziploc bags in your vehicle or in your backpack/briefcase/purse . - They have many uses (including keeping papers from getting damp) and they can fold up into a small bundle. 7. When/if you purchase a home or rent an apartment, make several copies of the floor pla n - That way, when/if you need to show someone (a contractor or an insurance adjuster) where something is you simply take out the diagram and indicate on there. 8. When you purchase something expensive, take a picture of it and any identification plate on it (if it has one) with your cell phone - If you lose it or it is stolen, then you'll have a picture of it that you can send to your insurance adjuster or the police.Back up the pictures somewhere and keep it safe. Take a picture of your phone's interior (where the SIM card goes) with a separate camera, in case the phone itself goes missing. 9. Always keep a change of clothing in your vehicle - Obviously, it doesn't have to be a suit. But you (or someone else) will always have something to wear in case of an accident. This includes socks and shoes. 10. Buy a package of small note-taking pencils ( the pencils with no erasers) and spread them around your home, in car and in any briefcase/purse/backpack that you may carry. They are very inexpensive, lightweight, they never run out of ink(!) and you'll always have something with which to write. Upvote 6+ Comments Share (2) Thank Report Updated 12 Aug James H. During my freshman year of college I became obsessed with productivity hacking, which included learning shortcuts for studying. Here's something I learned (that takes about 20 minutes) which has proven invaluable many times. Imagine if you could recite Pi to 30 (or even more) decimal places after just looking at the numbers for ~10 minutes. Or if you could remember dates and telephone numbers for nearly anything after just a minute or two. You don't need a photographic memory to do this, just an easy way to remember numbers. Unfortunately our brains aren't wired to remember digits, but they are decent at remembering strings of letters, and even better at remembering stories. What we then have to do is turn digits into letters, and then into stories, which isn't as hard it seems. Take 10-20 minutes to map the relationship between each number and letter below. The way to remember the relationship is in parentheses. 0 = Z (the letter z begins "0" so that's easy to remember) 1 = t (the letter t only has 1 downstroke) 2 = n (the letter n has 2 downstrokes or points of contact with the "ground") 3 = m (if you turn the letter m sideways it looks like 3. also 3 downstrokes) 4 = r (the word "four" ends in r)

5 = L (the roman numeral for 50 is L...so use your imagination and drop the 0) 6 = j (if you flip the number 6 around, it sort of looks like the letter j) 7 = k (imagination required, but if you look closely, the letter k is"made up" of three sevens - they're just put together in different directions) 8 = f or v (I need a picture to highlight this one, but think of a "v" forming in the 8 much like an hour glass) 9 = p or b (if you draw the letter 9 without the curl, you can flip around to be the letters "p" or "b," so that's easy) Once you have this, practice it for a couple of days until you're at the point where you can think of any of these digits and immediately know the letter. If you use a bit of imagination and remember the reasoning for the relationship, this shouldn't take too long. Now you're ready to start putting this into practice. Say you want to remember a string of 10 digits: 1184917329. This translates to "ttfrptkmnb." Now I know that isn't any more memorable than those 10 digits, but notice how these letters are all consonants - this allows us to insert vowels and break this string up as we please (we'll know when mapping these letters back to the numbers to remove the vowels, since they don't have any value). So let's break it down to: "tt fr pt km nb" Now let's add vowels to make them words: "that fur put kim nab" Now make it a sentence/story: "That fur put kim in the nab" - this is a bit nonsensical, but if you use your imagination and create some fantastical story (maybe some fur kim kardashian was wearing put her in "the nab" whatever that means), you'll actually have an easier time remembering it. The brain loves outrageous things for some reason. So now you have "that fur put kim in the nab," and if you choose to remember the ridiculousness of that story or image, you'll have these 10 digits remembered forever. It might seem like a lot of work to do this mapping, translation, adding the vowels and making a story, but believe me after learning the relationship and a few days of practice you'll be able to do this in your head extremely quickly. To remember simple lists, read through the list once or twice and then memorize how many items are on the list. When you have to recreate the list if you remember it's length you know for certain when you're done. I use this trick a lot with grocery lists. I walk into the store knowing I have to buy 7 items and before checkout I count the items in my cart. If I only have 6 I walk around a little more thinking about what I missed. Edit: Since my other example in the comments seems to be getting a better reception I'll move it up here: I also used this technique to memorize lists for tests in college. For example, there are 8 primitive types in Java. I still remember that, but if I tried to list them all without remembering that there are 8 I would probably miss one. Quickly approximate how long it takes to double something given a fixed rate of return: Divide 72 by the the rate of return. Useful when doing calculations without access to a calculator or spreadsheet. 72 is easily divided by many numbers. For example: How long will it take to double my money at 8% interest? 72/8 = 9 years How long will it take to double my money at 4% interest? 72/4 = 18 years For parents in the US, you can also use it calculate how much money you will have for college after a given number of years and a given interest rate: If I invest $10k now at 4% for 18 years, I'll have $20k. If I invest $10k now at 8% for 18 years, I'll have $20k in 9 years, and $40k in 18 years. The most useful thing you can learn in 10 minutes is how to reframe any negative situation so that it doesnt get you down. But so that you actually feel good about it. Our happiness in life depends on how we feel moment to moment. How we feel depends on how we perceive what happens to us. Now here's how to feel good about whatevers happening in your life, good or bad: Ask yourself "How is this serving me?" Then make a list of no less than 50 ways that what's happening is serving you. For example, our car broken down earlier this year leaving us without a car in a new city. This serves me because it means I do more walking so do more exercise. Easily. It means I get to experience the city in a more authentic way and meet real people, by taking public transportation rather than driving. It means the next car we buy will be newer and better, because we're not making the same mistake twice! And so on... Try it. Basically, what you do is make sure a fixed amount of your paycheck is sent to savings automatically. You don't have to think about it anymore and keep living your life as you've been doing. The interesting bit is that when you psychologically see how people spend money you'll notice that someone with less to spend automatically spends less. So when you make sure the money is send to your savings account automatically, you don't even see it and don't miss is when you're shopping. And without thinking about it, you end up with a nice stash of money at the end of the year. These computer keyboard shortcuts you can learn in 10 mins and can save 10s of minutes in daily work: 1. Cmd + G/Cmd + Shift + G followed by Cmd + F: You might be using Cmd + F to search but by using Cmd + G lets you search the next word, if there are many and using it with Shift lets you search the previous word in the same page

16

2. Cmd + Q: This shortcut is for quitting, not closing (Cmd + W ), the application. But, unfortunately, you may become an addict and it hurts badly when you are working on browser with multiple tabs open. So, when you have quit the browser (chrome), and want to recover all the tabs, use Cmd + Shift + T and chrome will give you all your tabs back open

3. Space Bar: Well, thats the longest key on the keyboard and useful too. Using Space + Cmd leads you to search in Spotlight, no matter which page are you on. Using Space in a page takes a page down and using Space + Shift takes a page up.

4. Cmd + Alt + Esc: Takes you to the Force Quit Applications window where you can force quit application as and when you are stuck with apps

5. Cmd + Tab: Switch between the application which are open and in the background And there are many more, but it solely depends on what kind of work you are doing and which application you are using the most. You can always read or discover keyboard shortcuts of your favorite app. Please let me know if any one is finding trouble replicating these shortcuts in Windows :) Find more at: So-You-Googled And, here is what I found in TED. Eliminate Car Blind Spots - Contrary to popular convention, adjusting your mirrors to show the rear edge of your car while sitting straight up in the driver's seat creates your blind spot. While the following might take a little getting used to, it vastly reduces and/or eliminates blind spots: Left Mirror (Driver's side) - tilt your head to the left so it is almost touches the driver's side window. Now, adjust your mirror outward until you can only just see the rear right edge of your car. Right Mirror - position your head almost directly in front (centered) on the rear view mirror. Do the same for your passenger side mirror, angling it out until you can just see the right rear edge. You may have to fine tune slightly, but you should notice that cars approaching (or departing, if you're overtaking and changing lanes, for example) from either side will now visibly hand-off from wing mirror to rear view with virtually no blind spot. After years of fighting ants, I've found that the most useful (as well as pet and kid friendly) way of controlling them is with masking tape . If you have a section of floor/wall/table that is plastered with ants, it's surprising how quickly masking tape will pick up most of those buggers without making anything wet or smell funny. As the crowd of ants thins out, identify their points of entry, and then use the masking tape to block them (you can crumple small strips of tape to seal cracks and then tape over it). It takes a bit of persistence, but after you've blocked all the entry points, you will be ant-free, no matter how messy the kitchen/bathroom gets. Later, when you have more time, you can take care of the holes/cracks with a more permanent solution such as caulk. 2. Proper desk posture. This can save you a lot of back and neck tension and joint pain.

3. Butcher a whole chicken. The meat is cheaper by the pound and you have more variety and flexibility. It also make it a bit easier to afford a quality bird when you're buying the whole thing.

5. Learn to change a tire while you're at it. It's very straight forward, but it's worth thinking about before you need it.

6. Learn to take a bath. An Epsom salt bath! It reduces your stress, soothes and heals joint pain, and promotes the direct absorption of magnesium and sulfates through the skin, which can be hard nutrients to find in regular food. It's also only about $2 for 5 lbs.

7. Learn to make perfect iced coffee. It's very simple. Just make regular coffee, black and put it in the refrigerator the day before you drink it. If you like it sweetened, make simple syrup the night before by mixing equal parts boiling

When sharing data over the network, enclose the path of the folder in double quotes when you are including them in emails. Like this, you won't have to <select, copy, win+r,paste, enter> to reach the folder. The double quotes create a hyperlink and you can directly jump to the location with just one click! Again, this is particularly true for path names containing spaces. 2. Browsing through multiple tabs in Google Chrome is a cakewalk when you use Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown, Ctrl+(1/2/3/4...) (Ctrl+9 for last tab). 3. When using multiple shapes in Microsoft Office programs like Powerpoint/Excel/Word use the Selection Pane from the Format Toolbar to quickly access the shapes instead of struggling to select them by clicking each of those individually. 4. Use the quick-access toolbar in Microsoft Office programs to quickly access commonly used functions. Use shortcuts (Alt+1/2/3....) on the selected data to achieve the function in just a couple of key strokes. 5. Experience the magic of space-bar while browsing through your emails in Outlook. It not only scrolls down through your email, but also jumps to the next email in the queue when you have reached the end of the first email. The same works for 'Shift+Spacebar' for scrolling up. The reason this happens is because you do things like this without thinking. It is automatic. So you need to work with this concept in one easy step. The next time you can't find your keys, and then you realize you left them ___. Make a mental note of ___. When you finish with your keys that day, put them where your brain told you to look the first place you checked. Your brain knew this subconsciously for a reason. Go with that. After a few times of putting your keys ___ you will always know where they are. This assumes you left them someplace in your home. Won't work if you locked them in your car, or left them someplace other than at home. I always put my car keys in a metal tray near the TV. Always! Automatic. Here is one of the most useful "tricks" I have ever learned: To keep shoelaces from untying accidentally, but still be able to get them off with one pull - go around twice when tying them. In other words, when you are holding the loop you form with one hand, wrap the other lace twice around instead of once when you tie them. It creates a double knot that doesn't come out until you pull on the laces like usual. This trick has been handy for tying both my kids laces and my own. Let me know if you get it right! Instead, use combinations of fingers to count up to 1,023 in binary. That's not practical to master in 10 minutes, though. In only 10 minutes you should be comfortable counting to 31 on your right hand. Start with the pinky on your right hand. That's one. Your right ring finger is two. The combination of your pinky and that ring finger makes three. Your right middle finger is four. Index finger is eight. Thumb is sixteen. Practice counting up to 31 on your right hand using combinations of fingers. Keep combinations straight by pressing the active fingers in the count against the table or your thigh. At the end of 10 minutes you'll be hooked. It's quite liberating to have a system of keeping count of more than 10 things with only your fingers! Here's the list. Counting to 31 On Right Hand 1 = 00001 (pinky) 2 = 00010 (ring) 3 = 00011 (ring, pinky) 4 = 00100 (middle) 5 = 00101 (middle, pinky) 6 = 00110 (middle, ring) 7 = 00111 (middle, ring, pinky) 8 = 01000 (index) 9 = 01001 (index, pinky) 10 = 01010 (index, ring) 11 = 01011 (index, ring, pinky) 12 = 01100 (index, middle) 13 = 01101 (index, middle, pinky) 14 = 01110 (index, middle, ring) 15 = 01111 (index, middle, ring, pinky) 16 = 10000 (thumb) 17 = 10001 (thumb, pinky) 18 = 10010 (thumb, ring) 19 = 10011 (thumb, ring, pinky) 20 = 10100 (thumb, middle) 21 = 10101 (thumb, middle, pinky) 22 = 10110 (thumb, middle, ring) 23 = 10111 (thumb, middle, ring, pinky) 24 = 11000 (thumb, index) 25 = 11001 (thumb, index, pinky) 26 = 11010 (thumb, index, ring) 27 = 11011 (thumb, index, ring, pinky) 28 = 11100 (thumb, index, middle) 29 = 11101 (thumb, index, middle, pinky) 30 = 11110 (thumb, index, middle, ring) 31 = 11111 (thumb, index, middle, ring, pinky) You might still have time left to practice with your left thumb (thirty-two) so you can count with six fingers up to 63! As a personal challenge, I tried to count to 1,023 in 10 minutes. I only made it to 660 = 1010010100. More practice needed. Also useful as a substitute for counting sheep to fall asleep. Not to worry! This method will help you find the source of an image (and works most of the time). I will use a random image from my 'likes' on Tumblr as an example. _______ So here's the image I see. It is just so pretty, and I want to know who took the photo. It has over 28,000 notes on Tumblr, so I am assuming this photographer is some renowned photographer or something.

Right click the image, and click 'Copy Image URL'

Step Two Go to Google and search the URL. Then click 'Search by Image'.

Step Three Now this is the hardest step: you must perform some soul-searching! Go on and click the top Google Search results and look for the image. If you still have trouble finding the credit for the image (as I did for this particular image), you can click the "All Sizes" option to narrow results of your specific image:

and click on the largest result with the best possible resolution, then click "Visit Page":

Step Four Now it will take you to a webpage. I was lucky and found the photographer's photostream on Flickr:

It's kind of upsetting that the original image which he himself posted only has 66 views but when uploaded to Tumblr by someone else it can get nearly 30,000 notes. It wouldn't of hurt if the image on Tumblr was simply linked to the photographer's Flickr profile. Urghh. _______

When you are done shaving, perform a final rinse of your razor in the alcohol. This will extend the razor's shelf life for months. This works because it is actually the corrosion caused by water, and not simple use, that causes the most dulling to a razor blade. Hence, our body has to spend more energy for the digestive process which is obviously not good. A task which could be done with x amount of energy now needs to spend (x + y) amount of energy. I have spoken to many people who complain about how they have thousands of emails and they're too lazy to clean them all up. I always have less than 50 mails in my inbox. What I follow is simple. When I get an email and I open it, I do one of the 3 things: 1. Reply to the email, or 2. Label it as something important like "todo" or "bills" (and/or send them to a folder), or 3. Just delete it. But I don't close the email and let it rot in my inbox for days/weeks/months. This helps you in 2 ways: Your inbox is forever clean and you also avoid procrastinating. So when you open an email you receive, do something with it. Don't just close it and keep it in your inbox. There are several other ways to maintain a clean inbox, but this is what I follow. Learn a simpler way to multiply

For some reason, this works for me. It's annoying to multiply big numbers in your head. But let me try to show you a way that made multiplying easier for me. Here's a simple example: 23 * 7= 161 The way everyone I know is taught to multiply is by multiplying the seven by the three, which is 21. Keep the one and carry the two over the two in 23 and add this two to seven by two. Very annoying. Like I said, this method works for me for some reason. Instead of doing that whole process, I would work backwards. Instead of 7*3=21, carry the 2, keep the 1, (7*14)+2, I would break the multiplication in two parts. (7*20) + (7*3). Like I said, very simple for me, I don't know if it makes a difference to anyone else. All I did was break down the larger number into its digits 20 (tens digit), 3 (ones digit). I multiplied the two numbers by the common number being multiplied, the 7, and got 140 + 21 = 161. You could do the same with larger number, even though it takes time to practice. Ex: 123 * 45= (100 * 45) + (45 * 2) + (45 * 3)= 4500 + 900 + 135= 5535 123*123= 12300+2460+369= 15129 I think there will always be less steps than doing it the way "everyone else was taught". See how there are three digits in the last example I showed you (#123)? Since the biggest number has three digits, there are only three steps in doing the problem. How would it look like doing the way "everyone else was taught"? I don't want to waste my time and my answer's space to show you how annoying it is. I'll let you do that on your own.

www.quora.com/Tips-and-Hacks-for-Everyday-Life/What-is-something-useful-I-can-learn-right-now-in-10-minutes-that-would-be-useful-for-the-rest-of-my-life 123/172

What the hell, I'll do it. 123*123 [(3*3)+(3*2)+(3*1)] +[((2*3)+(2*2)+(2*1))*10] +[((1*3)+(1*2)+(1*1))*100)] =15129 tada! Talk about the answer being more complicated than the problem. I'm proud I wasted 2 minutes of my life. I hope you find this useful so that the two minutes I wasted wasn't wasted. I don't usually like sharing my secrets but here you go. I think it's time I shared this one. Let me know what you think. Note: As you will come to find out, the challenging part of this method is remembering the numbers that you come up with after multiplying the digits. Practice makes perfect. Edit: Apparently I am not the only one who multiplies this way. As Ruben told me in the comments, Germany teaches its students to multiply this way. Well, if the Germans do it, we should, too. With one of the best education systems, I think we should all learn from this. Ha. And here I thought I was the only one who multiplied this way. Also, thank you Manish Dang and Srihari Radhakrishnan for commenting on some of the mistakes I made. I feel the answer is more complete now. Here's a simple visual aid to represent what I am saying, to a younger audience: Ex: 121 * 45 As you can see, place the digits on the left hand side. Next, place the other number being multiplied (45) in the center Cross multiply each of the digits, and add your results.

Find different, news sources

Using one news source could get boring over time. You might also be missing the full spectrum of certain stories. I suggest finding new sources that fit your needs. For example, I'm interested in international news, so I use Bloomberg, World News, and Google news to get a quick scan of the world. Like I said before, in today's world, I highly recommend multiple news sources because it is important to stay informed so that no one gets taken advantage of. Who knew that Tajikistan banned Youtube because of this uploaded video of the Tajik President singing karaoke. I find this video entertaining.

It takes time for this video to warm up so be patient (around 2:30). You've been warned. Listen at your own risk...

There's an app called Stitcher that I use. I find it interesting to use for getting my news. It's a bunch of podcast s in one app. You could customize your news, and listen to it via an internet connection. I find it helpful if you don't have time to read. Learning to match pitch will make you able to hear music better, communicate with people better, have fun with karaoke and sing-alongs, and maybe help others enjoy your singing more. To match pitch, listen to a song, and sing along. Listen to the way your voice sounds over the voice you hear from the radio. You want to get the highness or lowness of your voice to match theirs exactly. You might think that getting it pretty close is good enough, but you really want to get it exact, as much as you can. The secret is to make your voice "disappear" behind theirs. You can think of it as tracing over a picture. If you trace outside the lines you can see two lines, yours and the original. If you keep your pencil right on the line, your tracing disappears on top of the original. Musically you want to do the same thing with your voice. If you can hear your voice coloring outside the lines, try to tighten it up so it is exactly the same note as the singer. If you are a little off pitch, you will hear the difference between the notes as a "beating" sound in the air. The closer you are to the correct pitch the slower the beats will become. Suddenly you can sing along with other people, you can perform recognizable versions of songs at karaoke parties, you can tell soundhound what song to find. People enjoy listening to singers with good pitch, regardless of the great quality of their voice. This trick of listening for the exact notes also comes in very handy when doing comedy impressions, imitating people in order to annoy them, or playing phone pranks. More seriously, it lets people know that you are listening closely to them and increases your ability to empathize with them if you speak to them in their pitch range, to the best of your ability. Learning to use an operating system other than Microsoft Windows. Don't get me wrong, I use Windows super-hard, but learning your way around FreeBSD- or Linuxpowered systems (Moreso the latter these days) can ironically help you out of tough scrapes with Windows when the "Official" recovery tools are not available. Additionally, using systems that come preinstalled or have available software that works with libparted (Gparted, Kparted or similar) gives you free disk partitioning tools, and when you set a local filesystem up in a Linux-powered system, you can more easily use Linux-powered specialty tools like Clonezilla to image parts of a drive should you want to do that. Learned how to take a power nap (Edited to provide my advise of how to take a Power Nap) First you need to prepare a few things. A quiet place with a comfortable cot, chair or bed, some coffee or other caffeinated drink like black tea. A notebook and pencil or pen. A timer on your phone are an alarm clock. Set your timer for no than the time it takes you to fall asleep plus 10 minutes. To start out I recommend no more than 15 minutes total. If it takes you longer to fall asleep you will need to keep trying. Too much sleep will be more detrimental than helpful. Take out your notebook and write a short affirmation such as "I am ready to take a power nap and I am drowsy and relaxed. I will only sleep until I hear the alarm sound. I will immediately open my eyes and feel refreshed at the sound of the alarm and be ready to energetically live the rest of my day to the fullest." Put down the notebook and drink the coffee. It will take 10 or 15 minutes for the caffeine to start to work which should help you to wake up. Place the alarm a few feet from where you are so you will need to get up to turn it off, sit or lie down and close your eyes. Think about the affirmation, a person you love that helps you feel relaxed, a story or book you like or take calm three second breaths, hold for three seconds, release for three seconds and repeat thinking only of your breathing.

Chicken wings are only for non-vegetarians. What about the vegetarians and the vegans? What food hack can you learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for the rest of your life? Well, I'm assuming all of us have eaten and continue to eat bananas. We usually do that by breaking the banana at the place it's connected to the branch, then twisting and turning the tough stem and somehow breaking in. This is quite frustrating and usually ends up damaging the core. Now imagine a little monkey in the forest. He needs to eat bananas but can't break off the whole bunch off the tree or even a single banana off the stem. Does he go hungry? No sir. As it turns out, most of us have been doing it the wrong way for some reason. To eat a banana, hold it at the other end - the black one. Now, just press it firmly. It will split into two parts. Well, hold those two parts and pull. The peel will split beautifully along its length and you'll get a whole, undamaged, banana to eat.

So this just takes 2 minutes. What about the remaining 8? Well, you spend those lamenting the lie your life was until today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------How to tie a Windsor knot:

If you are investing in a stock with a PEG ratio of less than 0.8 and more than 0.4 then you are in safe territory. PEG is computed by dividing PE ratio by annual expected growth "G" . Of course expected growth G has to be computed based on growth seen in recent past, say in last 3 to 5 quarters. PE ratio itself is calculated by dividing the stock price in the market by the earnings per share E. If it is a dividend paying stock for last 2 years, even better. I am not saying this is the best way to invest or the only way to invest (in fact by this method one would never invest in Amazon stock). Just that it is a great way to invest and one that you can learn in 10 minutes and will be useful for the rest of your life. I will tell you a trait, which might not take 10 minutes but much less than it, but will be useful for the rest of your life. The answer is not long. It is just worth learning. Love Someone and do so , so deeply that the whole definition of life resides in that person. It is the most meaningful thing in life. Skills can fade, they can go out of fashion or need. But this trait, will give a jewel to your life which will shine like the brightest star in the universe, and will destroy any dark pages which might be a part of the book of your life. This might seem to be a philosophical answer , but philosophy is just that part of reality which we tend to ignore. Remember that we cannot see or touch heat, but it is always there.

Fold your fingers as shown in picture, if you rotate it anti-clockwise then screw will go in direction of your thumb and if you rotate if clockwise it will go in other direction. Step # 2 Fold the paper wherever you want to draw the line. Step # 3 Open the paper partially so that it makes an acute angle at the fold. Step # 4 Hold the paper with your left hand (if you are right-handed) and pencil in your right. Step # 5 Now move the tip of the pencil along the crease of the fold as shown in the picture. Patternify your passwords

Choose a base pattern that'll be common across most of your passwords and then prefix or suffix something that identifies the website or service you're using. Example (showing suffixes): My Google account password: tmSchu13Lz*ggL My Facebook account password: tmSchu13Lz*fcB My Yahoo account password: tmSchu13Lz*yaH My LinkedIn account password: tmSchu13Lz*lnK and so on. Agreed this is not any super-secure stuff, which is why you shouldn't be using this for your bank account for example but for other trivial accounts, this can be an easy way to remember passwords without needing to write them down or store them somewhere. You can choose the base pattern to be anything that you can quickly remember. A very simple example could be to put in abbreviations of some of the things that are going on in your mind these days. The example shown uses this to a certain extent. Essentially, my tmSchu13Lz came from tm - Taj Mahal (name of some lovely place you recently visited), Schu - Michael Schumacher (name of your favourite F1 racer), 13 - 2013 (simply, this year), Lz - Led Zeppelin (band whose songs you've recently started liking) and so on. Put in as many and whatever elements you want to, in your base pattern.

Building on top of that, you can now add an identifier pattern that will identify the website or service you're using. Simple examples could be: goo, goog, ggl, gle etc. for your Google account, fbk ,fcbk ,fbook etc. for your Facebook account, and so on. Now to add to the password strength and in fact, some websites make it necessary, to add at least one symbol character. So what you can do is simply add one such character (like a & or a % or a * like the example did) between the base pattern and the identifier pattern. Essentially, your password is one of the following: <SymbolCharacter><BasePattern><IdentifierPattern> <BasePattern><IdentifierPattern><SymbolCharacter> <IdentifierPattern><SymbolCharacter><BasePattern> and so on from the 6 possibilities. Choose any. I prefer the symbol character coming in between the other two because it serves as a separator. Learn to be calm in intense situations and hectic times. Sometimes it just happens that our brain is working far too fast with completely different thoughts urgently seeking for attention. Eg what do I have to do next and then x then y then z, in a i have to do this, b needs this etc. In such situations one needs to take control of the mind and slow it down. Refresh it and revitalize it. To lower down the thinking process and calm down in such situations, what I have learned is to deep breath in silence for 5 minutes. While deep breathing and yoga have already been mentioned, I want to add a small twist which rather helps to keep focus as the mind still wanders off to the distractions. I find myself focusing on my breath and yet the thoughts pushing in. At those times, trying to focus your attention at the center of your forehead really helps. Noticing the breathing along with trying to concentrate at the point finally controls the thought process. It was a trick given in high school by a teacher who was good at making us do yoga each day. Works pretty well for me. Next time in a mind rush try to empty your mind with this process. If your batteries are running low, (literally not figuratively) you can give them a quick recharge simply by tapping and rubbing the positive ends together. it won't fully recharge them, or even half way, but it will make you flash light brighter for several minutes. Just enough time to use it to find new fully charged batteries. Don't do it too hard or you might damage the batteries. As my high school chemistry teacher explained it to me, it frees up the ions. Whenever you are sending texts to many of your contacts of the same group, try personalizing the text. eg. If you changed your number and want to let all your school friends know, Instead of writing Hi friends, This is my new number or hi Bros, Wish you all a Merry Christmas, Try Hi mate, This is my new number or Hi Bro, Wish you a Merry Christmas. Make the text feel like you're only talking to that one recipient of your text when you've actually forwarded that text to many of your friends. If there's both the genders you need to send the text to, You may have to text two times, one for each gender or simply use a gender neutral text which doesn't sound that you've sent the text to many. Casting out Nines When I was in 5th grade, I discovered a book in my classroom library that explained a calculation checking approach called "casting out nines". Turns out - I was supposed to find this book (because the teacher used this technique to check out work) but I had the book long enough to learn it (and I still use it this to this day). It starts with a simple concept the digit sum. 34 has the digit sum of 7 (3+4) 97432 has the digit sum of 25, 25 has a digital sum of 7 I will show how it works for addition (but it works for subtraction, multiplication and division as well). Let's add: 14456 34567 ______ 49023 is this correct? 14456 = 20 = 2 34567 = 25 = 7 ______ 49023 =18 = 9 =0 and 7+2=9=0 so Yes it is correct. It is sad how I will be invited to a presentation - where someone spent day (and or weeks) performing some type of calculations - and the presenters hand out some type of hard copy print out of excel. I check the math very quickly - and many times it is wrong (Excel isn't wrong they have an error somewhere in the calculations). Writing this up, reminded me that I read an (Asimov?) short story about a future where society forgot how to perform mathematics - but by studying the way missiles were aimed - a bright person figured it out. But that person fate was doomed. Upvote Comment Share Thank Report 3 Aug Leon Bayer, Los Angeles Bankruptcy Attorney, Bayer Wishman & Leotta 3 Votes by Mayo Molnar and Abhishek Gupta. Upvote Comment Share Thank Report 29 Oct Mayank Sahu, Arts Student, Designer, Geek and a humble person 1 Find out the Day of the Week for any Date! Web site Grey Matters has an extensive and detailed tutorial for determining the day of the week for any date thrown at you, no matter how far into the past or future, complete with plenty of mnemonics. The basic principles of this method look like this: 1) Day and Months Number Conversion: To work out the days of the week mentally, we need to convert them into numbers. We'll also need to convert the months into numbers, to adjust for their effects. These are taught in an easy-toremember manner. 2) Addition of 3 Numbers: Without using a calculator, can you tell me what 6 + 6 + 31 is? That's about as difficult as the basic formula gets. If you're comfortable doing that, you won't have a problem working through the formula. 3) Subtracting Multiples of 7: Let's say you're asked about the 27th of a month. Regardless of the month or year, we can state with certainty that the 27th of a month will fall on [the same day of the week as] the 6th (since it's 3 weeks, or 21 days, earlier). Since adding 6 is simpler than adding 27, and will give the same result, why not use 6? If you learn to subtract multiples of 7, this makes the arithmetic so easy that you won't have to worry about addition problems any tougher than 6 + 6 + 6! 4) Year Number Conversion: After becoming comfortable with all of the above when given dates in the years 2000 to 2003, you'll learn how to remember and adjust the leap years in the 21st century to key dates. After learning those, you'll learn a simple way to adjust for any year from 2000 to 2099, and even adjust for other centuries! That's it. Chocolate can be enjoyed in many ways, but following a process like the above will turn a 15-30 second flavor profile into a 15-30 minute flavor profile, significantly increasing the lifetime of a bar (and also your appreciation of the dynamic range of chocolate flavors -- which is made up of over 600 flavor compounds ). The flavor of a particular chocolate truly depends on a wide range of variables. Therefore a chocolate bar made in mass (e.g. Hershey's) vs. one made in small quantities (e.g. Theo or Dandelion) will show very different qualities all around.
