PREMIER COMPLh4lCNT A LA PUBLICATION 79-4 (1966)

INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION

FIRST SUPPLEMENT TO PUBLICATION 79-4 (1966)

ELECTRICAL APPARATUS FOR EXPLOSIVE GAS ATMOSPHERES Part 4 : Method of test for ignition temperature

FOREWORD

I ) The formal decisions or agreements of the I E C on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote this international unification, the I E C expresses the wish that all National Committees having as yet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the I E C recommendations as the fundamental basis for these rules in so far as national conditions will permit.
4) The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to harmonize

national standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will permit. The National Committees pledge their influence towards that end.

PREFACE This Publication has been prepared by I E C Technical Committee No. 31, Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Atmospheres. It forms the first Supplement to I E C Publication 79-4 and gives a list of ignition temperatures determined by the method recommended in 1 E C Publication 79-4. It is hoped to publish further lists of established ignition'temperatures from time to time, as the results of tests made in several countries become available. A first draft was discussed at a meeting held in Ottawa in 1966, as a result of which the final draft was submitted to the National Committees for approval under the Six Months' Rule in September 1967. The following countries voted explicitly in favour of publication of this Supplement : Australia Belgium Canada Czechoslovakia Denmark Finland France Germany Iran Israel Italy Japan Netherlands Norway Poland Romania South Africa Sweden Switzerland Turkey Union of Soviet Socialist Republics United Kingdom United States of America Yugoslavia

List o f established ignition temperatures

Noies i. - The values given in this table have been meas-

2. - A small amount of impurity may appreciably

alter the value of the ignition temperature. For instance, at one laboratory it has been found that trichlorosilane only gives an ignition temperature of 230 "C when a newly prepared sample is used in the test. After ageing and possible contamination by moisture, the value of'the ignition temperature was found to have fallen to 185 "C.
