Types of Lead screws Lead screws are also known as power screws.

These devices are used for provision of linear motion. They aid in the process of linear motion of which they carry the process in a uniform manner. Lead screws are also used in the transformation of rotary motion to linear motion. Due to the fact that there is a large area of sliding contact among the threads of screws, they have got a huge loss of frictional energy as compared to any linkages. The screws are normally not used in carrying more power but instead they are used in machines which use low power. Lead screws are categorized basing upon the geometry of their threads. You should note that power screws can be used alongside split nuts. Conventional power screws have got an efficiency of between 29 to 71 percent. The only type of power screw which has an approximate efficiency of over 90 percent is the Ball Power. There are different types of lead screws. Those that are commonly used include Buttress threads, Square thread and Acme. 1. Square power screw This type of screw is used for transmission of force or power. It ensures that there is a low or no radical force that may be imposed on the mating nuts. It is the most efficient conventional type of power screw. This type of machine is very complex. The only side effect with it is that it is not easily compatible with split nuts when they are used on some specific machine systems 2. Acme This type is used for power transmission. It is a bit easier to manufacture as compared to the square type. The acme screw is superior over the square screw thread in that it has got stronger strength features. It is easily compatible with machines and it can also be used with split nuts. 3. Buttress thread It is a low friction thread that is strong in its uses. This type of lead screw is made in such a way that it can load huge loads in one direction. This is the strongest thread among the other thread forms of power screw. It is the highly recommended type of screw especially when you want to take heavy loads the vertical thread face. 4. Ball screw This type of lead screw is commonly used when a person is doing duties which may require high efficiency screws and the ones which are fast at the same time. This screw is used is used in applications which used the conventional power screws. Ball screw is made in such a way that it has got a circular groove cut which is within the helix of the shaft. It also has an internal groove which is circular in shape. This is of great help because the shape matches with that of the shaft groove.

Lead screws are used for various reasons. Some of such reasons may include; To aid in obtaining precise axial movements. To help in generation of large forces. To help in generation of high mechanical advantage so as to be able to move large loads while using little efforts
