Wilderness Race Mushers Run to Moosehead in February

The eighth annual Wilderness Sled Dog Race will take place Saturday, February 1, 2014 in the forested mountain trails of the Moosehead Lake Region. One of only three long-distance races in New England, the Wilderness Race will begin and end in the town of Greenville and offers mushers and their canine athletes a chance to compete in the challenging 100-mileWilderness area. A 30-mile race is also held, and fun activities for spectators and families are scheduled throughout the day. This event is free to the public. Spectators can follow signs thru town to Leisure Life Resort on Lily Bay Road, to witness the noisy and fun excitement of dog teams eager to run. We suggest you get there between 8:00 to 8:30 to meet the teams as they prepare for the 9am start. The 30-mile race starts at 10 AM. The race trail traverses the mountainous 100-Mile Wilderness area, and passes through several remote sporting camps, providing vantage points along the course for spectators who want to watch this daylong event and the racers progress. Long after darkness falls, even the last team to reach the finish will be greeted by a welcoming bonfire and cheering supporters in Greenville. The Wilderness Race draws teams from all over the U.S. and Canada as well as local competitors. The event is a regional favorite among mushers and receives high marks for a well-groomed, scenic trail and friendly community support. The event is organized by the Wilderness Sled Dog Racing Association, a Greenville non-profit. This year we are partnering with Northwoods Healthcare of Greenville and they will be providing events that day to help promote their Northwoods Kids Program. For more information, visit the race website www.100milewildernessrace.org , email wildernessrace@yahoo.com , or call Bethany at Greenville Town Office at 207-695-2421.

Bangor International Airport Reports Passenger Numbers Up for 2013

Bangor International Airports passenger traffic was up 6% for 2013 with over 487,000 passengers. This is the fifth consecutive year that passenger numbers have been up at Bangor International. The 2013 passenger numbers exceed the previous high of 480,000 passengers using BGR in 2005. We are very pleased with the passenger traffic numbers and thank everyone who used BGR in 2013. These strong numbers show that commercial flights to and from Bangor continue to be popular and competitively priced. It is unfortunate that these record breaking numbers came in a year when other business segments declined significantly. remarked Airport Director Tony Caruso. As recently reported, BGR recently made sizable budget cuts, including employee lay offs, due to significant decreases in military charter flights and shifts in other market segments. Overall flight operations at BGR were down 7% in 2013 with fuel sales down about 11%. Mr. Caruso went on to say that the airport will continue to work to strengthen all market segments and revenues at the airport as well as maintain work with all airlines to add more capacity on existing routes and bring new routes to serve passengers. For more information on flights from Bangor International visit www.FlyBangor.com. Bangor International Airport is a full-service regional airport offering non-stop, affordable flights to Detroit, Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda, New Yorks LaGuradia, Orlando/Sanford, Philadelphia, Tampa/St.Petersburg and Washington DC. BGR is the leading airport for trans-Atlantic tech stops. The Airport is a City of Bangor enterprise fund entity, which receives no support from Bangor property tax dollars; instead is supported solely through Airport generated revenue.

American Airlines announced January 15th that they are keeping BGR-DCA flights! The flights were in question due to the merger between American and US Airways. Thank you to everyone who sent letters of support or called your representatives. These flights play an important role in business and tourism development in the Bangor Region and the State of Maine.
