Pre cum pregnancy research was conducted in 1966 by sex research pioneers Masters & ohnson. !hile their research into pre cum was not detailed, they did report that coitus interruptus "the act a withdrawing be#ore e$aculation% was not a valid birth control techni&ue. 'his was due to the ris(s o# pre cum collecting residual sperm #rom inside the urethra. )ince the Masters & ohnson research, a number o# small scale studies have been conducted. 'hese tests used a sample si*e o# between + and ,- men. 'he results #rom these tests #ound no sperm in pre cum. 'hey concluded that pre cum does not pose a ris( o# causing unwanted pregnancy.
.ut there were issues with these tests. 'he biggest issue was that the samples were analy*ed more than two minutes a#ter they were produced. 'wo minutes is regarded as the critical point in this research. /nalysis carried out a#ter this time is unli(ely to #ind motile sperm as it has probably dried within that time. 0n an attempt to establish more de#inite results, a team o# researchers and ,1 male volunteers carried out a test in March ,211. Pre cum samples were analy*ed within two minutes o# being produced. 'he researchers #ound that 11 out o# the ,1 men "over +23% produced pre cum samples containing sperm. 12 o# these samples had a signi#icant amount o# motile sperm "between 1 million and -4 million%. 5ommon belie# is that urinating a#ter e$aculation #lushes out any sperm remaining in the urethra. )ome o# the volunteers in the study who produced sperm in their pre cum, had urinated be#ore they produced their sample. 'he #indings suggest that men can lea( sperm into their pre cum. 'he researchers didn6t go any #urther into these #indings and provided no suggestions as to how this could happen. More importantly the researchers admitted that some o# the volunteers who gave a sample containing sperm, may actually have used their e$aculate. 'his may have been to avoid the embarrassment o# #ailing to produce pre cum. )o un#ortunately, we are le#t with another inconclusive test that raises more &uestions than it answered.
