CIS 175 Assignments and Rubrics

Lab Assignments Worth 50 points apiece Below the rubric are instructions on how to log into the LabMentors Web-based Labs environment. You will need to follow these instructions in multiple weeks throughout the course. On multiple weeks there are several lab assignments that will be completed in the LabMentors Webbased Labs environment. Each lab will take between 10 and 20 minutes to complete. Getting Started 1. Open the LabMentors Web-based Labs sealed pamphlet included with your textbook to find the instructions on registering your account on the Website. 2. In the sleeve of the pamphlet you will find the access code that is needed to register. Please do not give this access code to anyone else as it is unique to the textbook you purchased and if someone else uses this code you will be unable to use it. 3. Please note the software requirements and other software needed for the labs to function properly. You will need to run the Elab setup from the labs homepage after registration. Lab Instructions 1. Once logging into the http://coursetunnel.labmentors.com site, click on the My Labs link from the left-hand pane. 2. Each chapter containing labs is listed under the Lab Library section and can be expanded to see the specific labs for the respective chapter. 3. After expanding a specific chapters labs, you can click a lab listed and select either Launch Now or Step-by-Step Guide, which provides instructions for the lab. 4. After launching the lab, you may be prompted to open certain components needed for the lab environment (including the Elab client, Flash, and Java). If prompted, please allow these components to run. 5. Once the lab has launched, follow the instruction from the Step-by-Step Guide and complete the lab. 6. After completion and clicking Close Lab you will be redirected to a page that will allow you to print your results. To do so, click the Print These Results button and print this file to a PDF or Microsoft XPS file and save it to your hard drive. 7. To complete the lab, upload the file to the Lab dropbox in the course shell. 8. If the lab specifically asked any questions for which you need to provide a response(s), indicate your response(s) in the dropbox in the course shell. Submitting Your Assignment 1. Upload the file to using the lab assignment link in the course shell. The link will appear in the weeks assignment area. 2. If the lab specifically asked any questions for which you need to provide a response(s), indicate your response(s) in the lab assignment link in the course shell. Grading for this assignment will be based on the following rubric.

Assignment 1: The Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable Due Week 4 and worth 100 points You are a recently hired consultant for a NCF, the Networking Consulting Firm, and your first consulting assignment is at Ocper, Inc. Upon arriving at the client, you learn from the president that there is no one dedicated to information technology or networking on the staff and there are 20 Windows peer-to-peer client computers all connected via coax cabling. The president also indicates that the company plans to double in size over the next two years, but she is weary of drastically changing the computing environment. Write a 2-3 page paper in which you: 1. Describe what changes you would suggest in terms of the current network type / structure and how you would lay out the benefits of the changes you recommend. 2. Describe why you would suggest connecting all current and new client computers using twisted pair cable instead of staying with the current coax wiring structure. 3. Discuss the possibility of using fiber optic cable instead of either twisted pair cable or staying with the existing coax wiring structure. 4. Research the costs involved with making these changes to the network (not including the cost for buying more computers) and determine whether or not there is a cost benefit. Your assignment must: Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the students name, the professors name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific Course Learning Outcomes associated with this assignment are: Contrast why different technologies are deployed in different contexts of networking, such as topology, bandwidth, distance, and number of users. Explain the relationship of bandwidth and latency and how they impact throughput in a data communications channel Deploy a basic Ethernet LAN and compare it to other network topologies. Use technology and information resources to research issues in networking.

Write clearly and concisely about introductory networking topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions. Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using the following rubric. Weekly Course Schedule
The purpose of the course schedule is to give you, at a glance, the required preparation, activities, and evaluation components of your course. For more information about your course, whether on-ground or online, access your online course shell. The expectations for a 4.5 credit hour course are for students to spend 13.5 hours in weekly work. This time estimate includes preparation, activities, and evaluation regardless of the delivery mode.

Instructional Materials
In order to be fully prepared, obtain a copy of the required textbooks and other instructional materials prior to the first day of class. When available, Strayer University provides a link to the first three (3) chapters of your textbook(s) in eBook format. Check your online course shell for availability. Review the online course shell or check with your professor to determine whether Internet-based assignments and activities are used in this course. Strayer students are encouraged to purchase their course materials through our designated bookstore MBS Direct. http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/strayer.htm If a lab is required for the course, MBS Direct is the only vendor that sells the correct registration code so that Strayer students may access labs successfully.

Kaltura Video Sessions

Instructors will record video or screen capture sessions using Kaltura in Weeks 2 and 4. Your instructor may also provide these sessions on a weekly basis to act as student tutorials on the following applicable procedures: Running and navigating the software or labs that will be used in this course Demonstrating the use of relevant programming languages and tools through screen capture and live navigation. Logging into the lab environments and running a sample lab required in this course (if labs are required) Demonstrating the downloading and installing of software to a students computer (if necessary) or using the software already installed in the Strayer University campus labs Locating or finding files and other student materials that may be required to use in assignments Submitting assignments in Blackboard

You are strongly advised to use the material provided by faculty in these sessions. Online and Ground instructors will post the Kaltura video recorded sessions to the Instructor Insights folder within the weekly tabs of the online course shell (Blackboard).

Study Buddy Wiki

You will be provided a direct link to the courses aligned within your program to post questions, search for answers, add helpful tips, and to assist other students. discussion thread. Additionally, the posts must be made on two different days during the week. Please note: Material in the online class will be made available on the previous Thursday. As it is always possible that students could lose their work due to unforeseen circumstances, it is a best practice to routinely save a working draft in a separate file before posting in the course discussion area. Professors hold discussions during class time for on-ground students. Check with your professor if any additional discussion participation is required in the online course shell outside of class hours.

Tests
Tests (quizzes, midterm and final exams, essay exams, lab tests, etc.) are available for student access and completion through the online course shell. Check the online course shell to determine how you are expected to take the tests. Online students are to complete the test by Sunday midnight the week the test is due. On-ground students are to complete the tests after the material is covered and before the next class session.

Assignments
A standardized performance grading rubric is a tool your professor will use to evaluate your written assignments. Review the rubric before submitting assignments that have grading rubrics associated with them to ensure you have met the performance criteria stated on the rubric. Grades are based on individual effort. There is no group grading; however, working in groups in the online or on-ground classroom is acceptable. Assignments for online students are always submitted through the online course shell. On-ground professors will inform students on how to submit assignments, whether in paper format or through the online course shell.
