Dolphin Echo
“Learning for Life”

September 2009
A Note from the Principal
Welcome Back! We are off to a very strong start of the 2009-2010 school year. Over the summer, the
teachers were at SSC preparing/moving their room (it is a myth that they have summers off), busy at work-
shops, and working hard with placement. Our custodial staff was working equally hard getting the building
ready for the start of school. They did a phenomenal job working with a short staff and getting the building
to a point that our children deserve. Administratively we were busy with placement, interviews, classroom assignments,
scheduling, and so much more. We were all working to create the best possible learning environment for your child.
It is my proud privilege to share with you the changes regarding staffing at South Shades Crest. Changes include:
 The Third Grade Team welcomed addition of Jo Michodet (formally 2nd grade) and Adryne Davis (formally
kindergarten).
 The Fourth Grade Team welcomed Betsy Crowley (formally 2nd grade) and Jodi Tofani (formally 3rd
grade).
We had many additions during the school year, so I would like to formally introduce those welcome additions:
 Ms. Margaret Williams our Reading Coach – she joined our family in October.
 Ms. Lee Ann Davidson rejoined our family in January joining the Fifth Grade Team.
 Ms. Donna Lydon from Bumpus joined our CNP Team.
 Ms. Nadine Pendelton retired from the outside business world joined our CNP Team.
 Mr. Josh Watkins joined us from Berry Middle School as our Assistant Principal in May.
New to South Shades Crest this year:
 Mrs. Brooke Gossett completed a leave last year and we are so pleased to have her as a permanent member
of SSC.
 Ms. Carla Rockhill joined the Fourth Grade Team from Riverchase Elementary.
I want to thank everyone for the smooth transition to the online registration. The community support of South Shades
Crest is absolutely amazing. As a school, we are so appreciative of the donations that you entrusted us with to create
stronger educational opportunities for your child. In respecting your generosity, I wanted to share a few changes that
we will be making to facilitate the funds directly benefitting your child.
 Be looking for more information and forms to be available on the school web page. The Dolphin Echo
(school newsletter) will now be posted on the web. By electronically posting, we will be able to channel the
money towards your child’s educational experience.

 A second tool we will be incorporating is . Twitter is basically a cell phone text message. This is
technology that we will be utilizing as reminders regarding picture day, Dolphin Echo posted, holidays,
school events, etc. This is not required but it will be a method to help get information to you. If you would
like to utilize it please see the Parent Resource page for directions by our famous tech coach, Amanda
Stone. If you already have an account please visit our page to subscribe – please make note of the naming
conventions being requested.

How you can help: We believe your child’s education is a team effort. Please feel free to communicate with your
child’s teacher- we can’t educate effectively without you involved. To facilitate this, please make sure we have current
contact numbers to help us best care for your child.

SSC Techbits
Technology is booming at SSC. Teachers are updating their websites with pictures, academic informa-
tion, and technology projects. Please visit their site often. Fifth grade is learning about Internet Safety
using Woogi World. Woogi World is a virtual world that helps students learn the correct way to travel
on the WWW.

Do you Twitter? Twitter is a social networking site that allows people to post updates about their cur-
rent status or important information. This year, SSC will twitter important updates they will help you
as a parent stay organized and current on events, activities, and reminders at SSC. You can follow
SSC by clicking the link on our school webpage or going to twitter.com and searching for SSC. You can
also get all updates sent to your cell phone. We ask that that if you set up an account to follow SSC,
that you make it a “blank” account (smithfamily@twitter). This is not to be used as a two-way piece of
communication. You will find out more on this (with directions) at Open House. Directions will be
posted on the website under FOLLOW US.
Two great sites to use at home:
http://pearsonsuccessnet.com – students can play math games, activities, and complete lessons online
http://www.spellingcity.com – students can practice their spelling words on this s

When should my child return to school?

Due to the increase in the number of flu cases and other illnesses in our schools and community we are ask-
ing parents to assist us with the appropriate time for your child to return to school. Please review the follow-
ing guidelines:
Fever: Your child should stay home if they have a fever of 100 degrees or more and should remain
home for 24 hours after the fever has gone-----without the assistance of Tylenol or ibuprofen.
Vomiting or Diarrhea: your child should stay home if they have vomited or had diarrhea (more than
one loose stool) within 2 hours prior to the start of school. They must have eaten and tolerated at
least 1 normal meal before returning to school.
Strep Throat: If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat (this requires a special test by your
doctor), your child should stay home 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has been started.

Our goal is to keep the entire school population as healthy as possible. Together we can accomplish this
goal.

Please send a change of clothes for your child in their backpacks. This will keep me from calling you in the
case of an accident, spills or falls in the mud.

Thank you.

Library News

Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a restful summer and that your children are ready to read! Here is an up-
date on everything that is going on in the library:
Kindergarteners and First Graders may have one book checked out at a time.
Second through Fifth graders may have two books out at a time.
Lost library books should be paid for as soon as possible. We like to give kids a chance to find a lost book, but after 2
weeks of “search time”, check-out privileges will be suspended until the book is paid for. Fees will be charged for dam-
aged books, as well. Please call or email me if you have any questions.
We will have a special treat for kids who participated in the Public Library’s summer reading program. Send a copy of
your child’s summer reading certificate or book list by September 18. No certificates or book lists will be accepted
after that date.
We need volunteers! Please contact me if you are interested.
You can search our catalog and find helpful links at http://destiny.hoover.k12.al.us/common/welcome.jsp?site=113
The library’s wiki is located at http://ssceslibrary.wikispaces.com/.
My blog, the Book Bistro is located at http://lobrown71.edublogs.org/. I usually post a review
every week or two – usually books for grades 3-5.

Thanks!

the Prearranged Absence Form which can be obtained from the front office. This form must be sub-
mitted to Mr. Lawry prior to the first day of the absence.

All students should be in their classroom by 7:45am each day. Any student not in their classroom at
this time will be sent to the front office to sign into school as tardy. Parents bringing students to
school at the time of the 7:45am bell or after this bell rings, must walk their child into the building
and sign the student in at the front office.

Boosterthon Fun Run Coming Soon

The Fun Run is just around the corner; November 5th to be exact! Mark your calendars for
our first SSCE fundraiser. We hope to raise a substantial amount of money for our school.
During these tough economic times we have to plan ahead and start saving now. If you put
aside .50 cents a day from Sept 11 until Nov. 13th you will have saved $32.00 (that is enough
to sponsor your child $1 per lap). If you ask your grandparents, aunts, and uncles to do the
same then that is even more $$$$$ for our school. Tough financial times call for smart plan-
ning on our part so that we may continue providing SSCE with what is necessary
for our children to succeed.
