AliwanFiestaisanannualeventthatgathersdifferentculturalfestivalsofthe PhilippinesinStarCityComplexinPasayCitywhereincontingentscompetein danceparadeandfloatcompetitions,aswellasinabeautypageant.Organized byManilaBroadcastingCompany(MBC)togetherwithCulturalCenterofthe Philippines(CCP)andthecitiesofManilaandPasay,theeventisdubbedas "TheMotherofAllFiestas,"withprizestotalingtoP3million(roughly US$70,000).AliwanFiesta,whichbeganin2003,aimstoshowcasethe differentFilipinoculturesandheritagenotonlytothepeopleinMetroManila butalsototherestoftheworld.[1]Thecontingents,meanwhile,aimtopromote theirrespectiveregionsbotheconomicallyandtourismwise.[2]Itwas originallyorganizedasavisualextravaganzafortheChristmasseason,butit hassincebeenheldduringthesummermonthsofeitherAprilorMay.[3] AliwanisaTagalogwordfor"entertainment"or"amusement."For2010,the colorfulbannerattheRoxasBlvd.entranceproclaimedthefiestaasTHE PHILIPPINESGRANDESTFIESTA.[4]

Competition
AliwanFiestaisdividedintothreecategories:CulturalStreetDanceCompetition(themainevent),Float Parade,andReynangAliwan(QueenofEntertainment/Amusement)beautypageant.Eachofthecountry's17 regionshavetheoptiontosenduptotwocontingentsrepresentingitsrespectiveculturalfestival,aswellasan optiontosendarepresentingfloatandorbeautypageantcontestant.[5]However,therosterofentriesforthe culturaldanceandfloatcompetitionsarelimited.In2008,thenumberofslotsforculturaldancewasincreased from20to24groups,whichwascompletedasearlyasJanuary.[3]Eachcontingentintheculturalstreetdance competitiontotalingupto100dancersaswellashundredsofmusiciansandsupportstaffmembershave undergonestringenteliminationcyclesduringvariouslocalfestivalsbeforebeingchosentocompetein AliwanFiesta.[1]Thehighlightoftheeventiswhenallcompetingfestivalsshowofftheirdanceskillswhile paradingforfourkilometers(about2miles)alongRoxasBoulevardfromQuirinoGrandstandtoAliw TheatergroundslocatednearCCP.[6]ThefestivalsrangefromthewellknownsuchasDinagyangofIloilo City,SinulogofCebuCity,andPanagbengaofBaguioCity,totheobscurebutjustasinterestingfeastslike AlikarawofHilongos,Leyte,PadangPadangofParang,ShariffKabunsuan,andPamitinanFestivalof

Rodriguez,Rizal.[1]Sideeventsalsoincludeabazaarfeaturingdifferent regionalproducts,aphotographycontest,aninterscholasticdance competition(interpretingdancetunesplayedonMBCradiostations), Filipinostreetgames,andafireworksdisplay.[6][7] Meanwhile,theparticipatingfloatsareonlyallowedtouselocaltextiles, produce,flowers,andotherproductsspecificintheirrepresentingcityin decoratingthevehicles.Eachfloat,portrayinglocalfolkloreand indigenoustraditions,istoppedbyaparticipantofReynangAliwan servingasmuse.[3][7]Thebeautypageantcontestantshavecompeteda daybeforetheparade.[8]

Thetoptencontingentsintheculturaldanceandfloatcompetitions receivecashprizes,withthetopfloatwinnerreceivingP500,000 (roughlyUS$11,000)andthewinningculturaldancegroupgettingP1 million(aboutUS$23,000)aswellasthebraggingrightsofbecoming thechampionofAliwanFiesta.Meanwhile,theReynangAliwanreceivesP100,000(roughlyUS$2,300).[5]

DinagyangFestivalofIloiloCityhaswonthemostnumberofwinsinthe culturaldancecategoryincludingfourstraightchampionshipsfrom2010to 2013.DinagyangFestivalisthefirstfestivaltobeinductedtotheAliwanHall ofFameforwinningfivetimes(2006,2007,2008.Inaddition,Dinagyanghas alsocoppedsecondplacesfrom2006to2008.AnothercontingentfromCebu, SinulogsaCarmen,alsowon3rdplaceyear2008(bothcontingents,Lumad BasakanonofCebuCityandSinulogsaCarmenfromtheCebuProvince, landedinthetopthreewhereinLumadBasakanongarneredtheAliwanHall ofFame).[3]OtherAliwanFiestachampionsincludeHaladFestivalof Midsayap,Cotabato(2003)and2004Dinagyang'sTribuAtubAtub,2005 Dinagyang'sPintadosdePassiofPassiCity,Iloilo2010Dinagyang'sTribu PaghidaetandDinagyang'sTribuPanayin2011,wonthestreetdance championship.AsidefromtheofficialAliwanFiestawebsite,thereisadecent blogthathasalistingofthewinnersfor2010withvideosondisplay.[9]
