1) A book rests on a table a. There are 2 forces acting on the book, what are they? b. The 2 forces in part (a) are equal and opposite but are not the action and reaction pair according to Newtons third law. State the reaction force to each force. 2) In which of the following cases does a resultant force act on the body: a. A bicycle traveling along a straight, level road at a constant velocity b. An electron orbiting a nucleus at constant velocity c. A bumble bee hovering in still air 3) A box of mass 50kg is pulled up from the hold of a ship with an acceleration of 1 ms 1 by a vertical rope attached to it. Find the tension in the rope. What is the tension in the rope when the box moves up with a uniform velocity of 1 ms 1 ? 4) 2 blocks, X and Y of masses m and 2m respectively, are accelerated along a smooth horizontal surface by a force F applied to block X, as shown in the diagram. What is the magnitude of the force exerted by block Y on block X during this acceleration, in terms of F?

5) A transport plane is to take off from a level landing field with 2 gliders in tow, one behind the other. Each glider has a mass of 1200 kg, and the friction force or drag on each may be assumed constant and equal to 2000N. The tension in the towrope between the transport plane and the first glider is not to exceed 10 000N. a. What is the tension in the towrope between the 2 gliders while they are accelerating for the takeoff? 6) An 80Kg man is parachuting and experiencing a downward acceleration of 2.4 ms 2 . The mass of the parachute is 5.0Kg. a. What is the value of the upward force exerted by the parachute on the man? b. What is the value of the upward force exerted on the parachute by the air? 7) The diagram shows a painter in a crate which hangs alongside a building. When the painter pulls on the rope, the force he exerts on the floor of the crate is 300N. If the mass of the painter and the crate is 75Kg and 25Kg respectively, find the acceleration of the crate.

8) A block of mass m1 = 20kg is free to move on a smooth (i.e. frictionless) horizontal surface, A rope which passes over a smooth pulley, attaches it to a hanging block of mass m2 = 10kg. Assuming that the pulley and rope masses are negligible, find a. The tension in the rope b. The acceleration of the blocks

9) A tractor of mass 1000kg pulls a trailer of mass 1000kg. The total resistance to motion has a constant value of 4000N. One quarter of this resistance acts on the trailer, the rest acts on the tractor. At first, the acceleration of the tractor and trailer is 2 ms 2 but eventually they move at a constant speed of 6 ms 1 a. When the acceleration is 2 ms 2 , what is the force exerted on the tractor by the tow bar? b. When the tractor and trailer are moving at a constant speed of 6 ms 1 , what is the force exerted on the trailer by the tow bar? 10) A dune buggy is used to tow a small boat at a steady speed of 2 ms 1 parallel to the shore as shown. If the tension in the rope is 1200N, calculate: a. The resistive drag force of the water on the boat b. The sideways drag force of water on the boat (necessary to prevent the boat from being pulled toward the shore)

11) State Newtons third law and explain how it applies in the following situations: a. A cork floats on the surface of a pool of water b. A body undergoes free fall towards the surface of earth c. A rocket motor firing in outer space to accelerate a spacecraft d. A man takes a step e. A parachutist descending at a constant speed f. A stone suspended by a rope to the ceiling
