Maserati GranCabrio

Preface

Maserati GranCabrio
Technical Introduction

Preface The GranCabrio (in some markets also named GranTurismo Convertible) is the third model, after the Quattroporte and GranTurismo, to be using the Quattroporte platform introduced in 2003. As a full four-seater cabriolet, it naturally completes Maseratis model range: customers looking for top performance combined with world class luxury and true Italian style can now make the choice between a 4-door sedan, a true Gran Turismo coup and the delights of open top motoring in a stylish cabriolet. The GranCabrio is using the technical base of the GranTursimo S Automatic. It shares the same platform and also its wheelbase is identical to its coup sister model. Under the bonnet we can find the same 4.7L wet sump engine boosting 440 hp, combined with the 6-speed automatic transmission from ZF. This document aims to provide the Maserati Service technician with all the needed background information to diagnose and to carry out the necessary service operations and repairs on the described vehicle. It gives an overview of all technical aspects of the car, but the focus is of course on the systems that differentiate it from its coup sister model: the soft top roof construction in the first place, but also important new systems and components related to active and passive safety.

Maserati GranCabrio Exterior

Vehicle overview

The Maserati GranCabrio is a dynamic and elegant cabriolet. The car draws its inspiration from the GranTurismo, an example of the perfect synthesis of modernity, sensuality and passion. Created by master coachbuilder Pininfarina, the GranCabrio is characterised by its soft-top roof. This styling bonds the GranCabrio closely with the companys refined traditions. When closed, the rear pillar one that does not, in fact, exist is mimicked in the hoods smart, forward-slanting design, giving the GranCabrio the dashing looks of a coup. Once open, the Maserati GranCabrio transforms into an astounding cabriolet, free to show off all its sinuous, feline beauty. The vibrant side-on view is accentuated by the reduced ground clearance and long bonnet. A stylish V points towards the grille, in the middle of which is a large chrome Trident. The flanks also feature chrome elements that give the GranCabrio some added gloss. One particularly goodlooking feature is the continuous chrome trim that encircles the cabin and integrates with the third rear stop light. Towards the back of the car, the triangular light cluster is formed by 96 LEDs with a wide diffuser that further underlines the cars athletic poise. This sporty feel is also seen in the generous 20 wheel rims that reflect the Trident design. The shape of the GranCabrio is the result of extensive aerodynamic testing aimed at limiting the drag typical of droptop cars. The GranCabrio boasts a Cx coefficient that is one of the best in its class: 0.35 with the hood up and 0.39 with it down. The spoiler and rear diffuser both contribute to obtaining top draw roadholding.

With the top extended in other words, with the car closed the Maserati GranCabrio presents a dynamic, modern and elegant profile. The C-pillar, which is actually not present, is replaced by the eye-catching forward canted design of the top and the rear window. At the touch of a button the car is completely transformed the top folds away under the tonneau cover in 28 seconds, and the inimitable character of the Maserati GranCabrio emerges.

Maserati GranCabrio Interior

Vehicle overview

The Maserati GranCabrio's interior: roomy enough for four The GranCabrio' s cabin offers the maximum in comfort for front and rear occupants. The Maserati GranCabrio is the only real droptop in its class to offer enough space for four adults, seated in an elegant and luxurious cabin. The space inside is much greater than the average for its category and ensures the maximum comfort even for passengers in the rear. The interior is divided by a central tunnel that distributes the space between the occupants along the cars length. The dashboard extends horizontally and its upper section features a characteristic V, a distinctive Maserati symbol. The GranCabrios cabin is easy on the eye and invites you to touch it. Only the finest materials were employed in its build: the leather was handcrafted by Poltrona Frau and a selection of prestigious woods was used for the dashboard, door panel and rear flank features. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail can also be seen in the chrome rings that enhance the dashboard switches and steering wheel as well as the Alcantara finish on the back of the steering wheel paddles. Adding to the on-board comfort is the canvas hood, one made up of three layers to ensure excellent acoustic isolation. With the top down and with just two on board, it is possible to minimise interior air flow thanks to the windstop developed specially for the GranCabrio (available as an option). On the Maserati GranCabrio, the air conditioning has been tweaked to offer the maximum comfort levels both with the top up or down. The system recognises how the car is being used by automatically reprogramming the emissions mixed with air to maintain the set temperature.

Maserati GranCabrio Technology

Vehicle overview

The GranCabrio borrows its technical underpinnings from the GranTurismo S Automatic, which was launched 6 months earlier at the Geneva Auto Show

Engine The engine on the Maserati GranCabrio is an eight cylinder, 4691cc V90 capable of developing 440 bhp at 7000 rpm and with a peak torque of 490 Nm at 4750 rpm. The power unit uses the advanced technology typical of all Maserati engines. This allows the declared power figures to be reached, ensures smooth gear changes and a quiet engine. The timing is actioned by two overhead camshafts per bank and four valves per cylinder controlled by hydraulic tappets. The overhead camshafts on the aspirated side are controlled by a low pressure, continual timing variator, a technical solution that, together with the optimisation of the combustion chamber, allows 82% of the maximum torque from 2500 rpm for a superb overtaking, even in high gears. Transmission The Maserati GranCabrio features a six-speed, ZF automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter to give extremely fluid gear shifts while maintaining the characteristics of the sporty V8 engine. The transmission has four modes and is also fitted with self-adapting control that adjusts the type of gear change to the driving style and road conditions. In Manual mode, gear changes are sequentially made by the driver via the steering column mounted paddles or the gearstick. Exhaust The engine noise is emphasised by the sports exhaust managed by the by-pass valve. Pushing the Sport button opens the pneumatic valves if the car is on the move and the engine above 3000 rpm. This means that the engine can be exploited to the full, giving a rewarding engine roar. This becomes even more gripping with the hood down, making the car one with its surroundings.

Maserati GranCabrio

Vehicle overview

Chassis The weight distribution on the Maserati GranCabrio is slightly biased towards the rear with 49% over the front and 51% over the back with the hood up. With the hood down, the front-rear split is 48-52%. This set up was achieved by stationing the engine behind the front axle and results in true and predictable handling that makes driving easier and renders the car more stable. The new loadbearing chassis is constructed from a blend of materials with an eye on keeping the weight down. The framework is made from toughened steel apart from the bonnet and front crash protection bar, in aluminium, and the boot lid in heat treated plastic that uses Sheet Moulding Compound technology. The chassis was developed to provide maximum stiffness even without a roof. The result is that the Maserati GranCabrio is able to offer the same driving pleasure as any quality closed-top cars. Suspension The Maserati GranCabrio is fitted with the electronically controlled Skyhook suspension as standard. This system employs dampers with an aluminium body that continually adjust the damping. This solution means that the set up adapts instantly to the driving style and the road conditions to offer the utmost in on-board comfort. The Skyhook system acts by using acceleration sensors that detect movement on all four wheels and the body. A control unit processes the data it receives from the sensors, analyses the driving style and road surface and instantly adjusts the dampers accordingly via their proportional valves. Electronics The cars already superb dynamic handling is constantly monitored and optimised by the Maserati Stability Programme (MSP). The MSP kicks in to correct even the hint of a skid by reducing torque. Working with the ABS and EBD, the system stops the wheels locking under braking and distributes the braking between the front and rear axles. It also prevents the wheels spinning on low grip surfaces when accelerating or downshifting (ASR and MSR). Hood The Maserati GranCabrios canvas hood was a technological as well as aesthetic choice. The soft top solution means a lower centre of gravity because the bottom of the car is heavier. This enhances the cars dynamic handling. The hood weighs only 65kg and the materials, mechanism, its operation time and stowage are all top quality. The GranCabrio transforms from a splendid coup into a cabriolet in just 28 seconds even if the car is travelling up to 30 km/h.

Maserati GranCabrio Safety

Vehicle overview

The Maserati GranCabrio is on a par with the highest safety standards in its category thanks to the adoption of innovative active and passive safety features. Active safety The dynamic handling on the GranCabrio is assisted by the electronically controlled Maserati Stability Programme (MSP). The technology was developed to optimise the driving dynamics and safety when on the move. The high performance brakes on the GranCabrio were built by Brembo and feature four self-ventilating drilled discs. The 360 mm front brakes make the most of dual-cast disc technology (cast iron for the braking surface and an aluminium hat). This solution, teamed with callipers actioned by six pistons in a single aluminium block, ensure unbeatable stopping power and are highly resistant to fade even under intense use. MSP works in harmony with the ABS to stop the wheels locking under braking, and EBD, to distribute the braking force between the front and rear axles. The Electric Park Brake (EPB) replaces the traditional mechanical handbrake with an electronic control on the central tunnel. The EPB system is engaged automatically when the engine is switched off and is deactivated when the accelerator pedal is pressed. EPB also plays an important role in terms of safety as, in an emergency, it acts on all four wheels and can be employed with the vehicle in movement, without compromising stability, until the switch is released. The Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) has been introduced on the Maserati GranCabrio to improve safety. Thanks to a dedicated sensor, HBA recognises panic braking by measuring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and clamps the brake pads to the disc with greater force than the driver develops during braking. This shortens the stopping distance in emergency situations. Passive safety The Maserati GranCabrio is fitted with new generation airbags, using the intelligent technology first employed on the Maserati Quattroporte S. The passenger side airbag, with its Low Risk Deployment, adapts the intensity of its inflation in crash situations to the size of the occupant. New head and chest airbags set in the front seats provide protection from side impacts while seatbelts are equipped with the latest pre-tensioners and load limiters to securely contain the occupants. The main introduction in terms of passive safety is the extendable roll bars set behind the rear seats. The roll bars are hidden by the hood cover and are activated in just 190 milliseconds when needed. The extendable roll bars were developed to offer occupants the maximum protection both with the hood raised or tucked away. A Maserati copyrighted technical solution allows the roll bars to extend by shattering the rear window without any risk for the occupants.

Maserati GranCabrio Personalisation

Vehicle overview

Discover the personalisation options on the Maserati GranCabrio The GranCabrio introduces new personalisation options to the Maserati range. Maserati offers a personalisation programme that is unlike any other in the world. This programme has been developed with the objective of allowing each client to create a made-to-measure car. Such a level of exclusivity is a source of pride for Maserati, a small company able to devote the highest levels of care and attention to every car it builds and guarantee the client a wider range of finishes than its competitors. The personalisation options on the GranCabrio have been enhanced by the soft top hood, available in six colours, and by the introduction of two new Poltrona Frau tints, Bianco Polare and Blu Profondit. The colours are available on the Maserati range for the first time and were developed for their harmony with the exterior colours and hood. The dashboard, door panels and rear side panels are available in the new Dark Chrome standard colour but it is also possible to choose from various lacquer finishes or precious woods, among them Carbalho and Moonwood. In terms of the mechanics, there are two colours for the wheel rims (Silver or Grigio Mercury) and six colours for the brake calipers. The Car Configurator Maserati provides excellent support in configuring even the smallest details on the GranCabrio. The Car Configurator gives the client the opportunity to create his ideal car online and ensure that the combination he has chosen, including the colour of the leather and materials, the finish of the headlining, the stitching and the carpets, is really what he wants. Atelier Maserati Visitors to the Modena headquarters can make the most of expert help in creating their dream car by using the Atelier Maserati, just like they would for a suit styled by a master tailor. GranCabrio Predecessors

GranCabrio Predecessors

Maserati has a long and impressive heritage of constructing open-top motor cars. The following pages offer a brief overview of Maseratis most distinct open top Gran Turismo models from the very beginning till today.

2000 Gran Turismo Frua Spyder (A6G)

Years of production: 1950-1951 Numbers produced: 16 Engine: 6 cylinder, 2000cc, 100 hp

The A6G or 2000 Gran Turismo had a new two-litre engine based on the power unit of the A6GCS racing cars. Compression ratio and thus power was reduced to allow the engine to run on commercial fuel, of which excellent quality was not always guaranteed. Coup bodies ware built by Frua, Vignale and Pinin Farina and an elegant spyder version was created by Frua. All bodies were of great luxury, refined and cured in every detail. However a high list price and performances not matching the quickly changing standard in the luxury car segment didnt favour its sales. Only 16 vehicles were produced.

Maserati GranCabrio 3500 GT & GTI Vignale Spyder

GranCabrio Predecessors

Years of production: 1958-1964 Numbers produced: 242 Engine: 6 cylinder, 3.5L, 220 & 235 hp

Almost simultaneously with the coup, an open version of the 3500 GT was under development. Early prototypes of the Spyder were made by Touring and Frua, but the final design was a masterpiece of designer Giovanni Michelotti when he was working for Vignale. The body was now made from steel instead of aluminium and was fitted on a 10 cm shortened chassis. Also the Spyder adopted the Lucas fuel injection system and its drum brakes were replaced by more modern disc brakes on later versions, although drum brakes remained available upon request.

Mistral Spyder

Years of production: 1964-1969 Numbers produced: about 120 Engine: 6 cylinder; 3.5L, 3,7L & 4.0L; 220-265 hp

The Mistral initiated Maseratis tradition to name its Gran Turismo cars after famous winds (the Ghibli, Bora, Merak, Khamsin, Karif and Shamal would follow). The Mistral shared its mechanical base with the Sebring but, thanks to its 2-seater fastback body from Pietro Frua, had a much more modern appearance compared to the more traditional styled 2+2 Sebring. A first prototype of the Mistral was presented at the Turin motorshow in the autumn of 1963 but production didnt start before 1964. The body was from steel but the doors, bonnet and rear window frame were made from aluminium to reduce the weight. An open Spyder version was presented at the Geneva motorshow in March 1964. The Spyder was produced in about 120 units.

Maserati GranCabrio Ghibli Spyder

GranCabrio Predecessors

Years of production: 1967-1972 Numbers produced: 125 Engine: 90V8, 4.7L & 4.9L, 340 & 330 hp

In 1966 a project was started for a new sporty Gran Turismo in the best tradition of the Maserati Brand. The new Ghibli, named after a desert breeze, was strictly a 2-seater and its beautiful design was a true masterpiece of the young designer Giorgetto Giugiaro during his period at Ghia. The body of the Ghibli was perfect in every detail and is still regarded as one of Giugiaros most beautiful designs. The V8 engine from the Quattroporte/Mexico adopted a dry sump lubrication system in order to fit under the long and low Ghibli bonnet. From 1969 the Ghibli was also made available with a 4.9L engine, named Ghibli SS, and an open Spyder version was added, of which only 125 units were produced.

Biturbo Spyder

Years of production: 1985-1994 Numbers produced: 3076 (all versions) Engine: 90V6 twin turbo 18v; 2.0L, 2.5L & 2.8L; 180-224 hp; 90V6 twin turbo 24v, 2.0L, 241 hp

Top performances and open top driving fun were again combined in the Biturbo Spyder who was the first open Maserati since the Ghibli Spyder, more than 12 years earlier. Development for the body was done by Zagato near Milan while the bodies were assembled in Turin before transportation to Modena where the mechanical parts were added. The 2514 mm wheelbase from the Biturbo was reduced to 2400 mm for the Spyder models. The Biturbo Spyder existed in various versions and followed the same technical and aesthetical evolutions as the coupe, with exception of the 24-valve 2.8L engine. The various versions were: Biturbo Spyder, Biturbo Spyder 2500, Biturbo Spyder i, Biturbo Spyder i 2500, Biturbo Spyder 2.8i, Spyder 2.0 4v. and Spyder 2.8. In 1991 the Biturbo name was dropped for the open models.

Maserati GranCabrio Spyder GT & Spyder Cambiocorsa

GranCabrio Predecessors

Years of production: 2001-2007 Numbers produced: 3889 Engine: 90V8 dry sump, 4.2L, 390 hp

With the introduction of the Maserati Spyder, at the Frankfurt motor show of 2001, again a new area started for Maserati, this time an area of close technical collaboration with group partner Ferrari. Whilst the exterior of the new Spyder still bore strong resemblance to the 3200GT model, under the skin this car was completely new. Under the hood the twin-turbo unit had been dropped in favour of a completely new, normallyaspirated 4.2L V8 with a dry sump lubrication system. Also the transmission was totally new. The gearbox is moved to the rear end of the car where it forms a single unit with the differential (transaxle). The Spyder has a shortened wheelbase with respect to the Coup and is strictly a two-seater only. The soft-top opens and closes fully automatically. This model initiated the return of the Maserati brand to the United States.

GranSport Spyder

Years of production: 2005-2007 Numbers produced: 472 Engine: 90V8 dry sump, 4.2L, 400 hp

With the GranSport Spyder, presented at the Frankfurt motor show of 2005, also enthusiasts of open top motoring could now enjoy the enhanced performance and the more agressive character of the GranSport. Thanks to its shorter wheelbase, the GranSport Spyder is even more agile than its coup sister model. The modifications with respect to the normal Spyder model are in-line with those of the coup version of the GranSport: increased engine power up to 400 hp; improved control logic of the Cambiocorsa gearbox (now standard); new 19-inch alloy wheels; upgraded suspensions; a new front bumper with larger grille; aerodynamic side sills and a more sporty interior with new seats.

Braking System

In analogy with the other Maserati vehicles with the 4.7L engine, The GranCabrio is equipped with a high performance braking system employing dual-cast technology for the front brakes, a system developed in collaboration with Brembo. It has the following characteristics: Tandem master brake cylinder 25,4/27 mm, vacuum operated brake booster, separated hydraulic brake circuit using an X-pattern. Front axle: monobloc aluminium 6-piston brake calipers with differential diameter (30/34/38 mm). Dual-cast brake disks, ventilated and perforated, diameter x thickness 360 x 32 mm. Brake pads Jurid 673 GG. Monobloc callipers are more resistant to distortion than 2-piece callipers; this means lighter materials can be used, in this case aluminium, reducing the weight of the component. Furthermore, the calliper is more efficient at all working pressures: this means a shorter brake pedal stroke. Rear axle: monobloc aluminium 4-piston brake calipers with differential diameter (32/36 mm). Ventilated and perforated discs, diameter x thickness 330 x 28 mm. Brake pads Ferodo HP1000. 6 available colours for the brake calipers: black (standard), red, titanium grey, yellow, silver and blue. Drum in Hat parking brake, electronically operated (EPB) with auto-apply, drive away and pre-release functions.

Braking System

MSP system Like other Maserati models, the GranCabrio is fitted with the MSP system (Maserati Stability Program). This system controls all the vehicle dynamic functions related to braking, cornering stability and traction control. The different dynamics are controlled by a number of specific functions, all integrated in the NFR (Bosch ESP 8.0): ABS (Anti-lock Braking System): prevents the wheels from locking during braking ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation): prevents the wheels from slipping during acceleration. EBD (Electronic brake force distribution): assures the ideal distribution of the brake force between the front and the rear axle based on vehicle load and dynamic conditions. MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung): electronically controls the engine braking torque during downshifting to ensure the stability of the car. MSP (ESP), (Maserati Stability Program): controls the brake of each wheel individually to ensure the vehicles stability during cornering. HHC (Hill Holder Control): assists the driver during uphill driving away by preventing the vehicle from rolling backwards in the time between the lifting of the brake pedal and the depressing of the accelerator pedal. HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist): assistance during emergency braking (NEW!).

Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) Offers assistance to the driver in the event of an emergency braking Integrated function in the Bosch ESP 8.0 unit (NFR) Applied for the first time on the GranCabrio model. Other Maserati models will follow. It uses the information from the internal hydraulic pressure sensor to detect the speed with which the driver depresses the brake pedal. During an emergency braking, people often depress the brake pedal quickly but with insufficient force. It increases the brake pressure by means of the hydraulic pump if an emergency braking situation is detected. This function reduces the stopping distance in emergency braking situations and therefore improves safety.

The Maserati GranCabrio uses a new generation of dual stage airbags for the driver and front passenger. These use a technology employed for the first time on the Quattroporte and then incorporated on the GranTurismo. The system is intelligent - it adapts autonomously to the stature of the occupant and adjusts its deployment accordingly in case of collision. The passenger side airbag system with Low Risk Deployment function is the top-ofthe-range option in occupant protection and guarantees outstanding safety in all front collision scenarios. Along with its increased passive safety aspects, this new solution provides a significant improvement in the styling of the top panel of the passenger side dashboard, making it more linear with the airbag better integrated into the overall design of the interior. The GranCabrio is equipped with a new type of lateral airbags or side bags, which are integrated in the front seats. They are newly designed and offer protection to both the occupants head and torso. The use of this new type of side bag allows the elimination of the separate head bag in the door panels as used on the GranTurismo models. Note: side and frontal airbag activation is controlled by a separate strategy inside the NAB , they do not necessarily deploy together.

Maserati GranCabrio
Roll Over Protection System (R.O.P.S.)

Safety Components

All GranCabrio vehicles are as standard fitted with a roll over protection system (R.O.P.S.) under the form of an active roll bar. The system is hidden behind the head rests of the rear seats and will deploy in case a roll over risk situation is identified. Together with the reinforced windscreen frame will this offer the best possible passenger protection in the event of a roll over.

The system consists of two sliding struts in two drawer-like casings that extend in the vertical direction. Both casings are fixed to the vehicle chassis, behind the rear seat back rests. They are inclined 15 backwards in order to aim at the rear window (with soft top in closed position). The rear window will break when the roll bars are activated, allowing them to fully extend. This is done so to provide the greatest possible safety for even the tallest rear passengers; if deployed towards the roof, the presence of the canopy would limit the extension of the roll-bars, thus reducing the margin of safety. The roll-bars deploy when the handling of the car makes an imminent roll probable, and also when the car suffers a side or rear collision of a certain force so that to prevent damage to the system the roll-bars are extended to deal with possible future emergencies.

Maserati Academy

37

Maserati GranCabrio

Safety Components

The active roll bars are controlled by the airbag node (NAB) and are triggered by means of a pyrotechnic release mechanism. A specific control logic inside the NAB will evaluate the risk of a roll over and activate the roll bars when a certain vehicle roll angle is reached. The total activation time + extraction time of the system is less than 190 ms, which is far less than the time it takes a vehicle to roll around its own axis. The extendable roll bar, when inserted in its casing, is loaded by a spring and locked by means of a locking pawl. When activated, the pyrotechnic charge will release the locking pawl and the roll bar will extend by means of the spring force. During its extension, a mechanical no-return mechanism will lock the roll bar in the extended position. This will prevent the roll bar from being inserted by an external force, for example, if the vehicle hits the ground during a roll over. Both extendable roll bars are always activated together and need to be replaced after deployment.

Extendable roll bar

Aluminium casing

Pyrotechnic charge

Tungsten pin hidden beneath the plastic will break the rear window during deployment

In normal conditions, the extendable roll bar is covered by a plastic shield behind the rear head rests. The shield contains an integrated pin made of tungsten. The pin is not visible but is hidden beneath a pre-cut orifice in the plastic. It will protrude through the plastic in case of deployment and break the rear window the moment it hits it (in case the roof is closed). This is necessary to allow the roll bars to extend to their full length (281mm) and offer the best possible occupant protection in the event of a roll over.

Safety Components

The extendable roll bar as a service part comes with a protective cover which is fitted on top of it. This cover will prevent an accidental deployment of the roll bar during storage, handling or installing, causing possible injuries.

Protection cover Securing binder

CAUTION

In case of replacement of a roll bar, only remove the protective cover after having completed the installing in the vehicle.

The electrical connectors of the right hand side and the left hand side roll bars have a specific colour: Right hand side roll bar: Left hand side roll bar: green connector blue connector

Make sure the correct position of each connector is respected!

CAUTION

Just as with airbag units, the vehicles battery must always be disconnected before removing or installing an extendable roll bar unit in the vehicle. Only reconnect the battery after the installing in the vehicle has been completed. In case an extendable roll bar drops on the ground during transportation, it must be returned to the supplier for verification. It must not be installed in the vehicle, even if no external signs of damage can be found.

CAUTION

Diagnostics The airbag node (NAB) will check the electrical continuity of the connector and the wiring harness of the roll bars. It will store a DTC in case a failure is detected. The right hand side and the left hand side active roll bar can be replaced individually in case of an error in the system.

Adaptive Light Control:

Electrical Systems and Devices

The already high effectiveness of the Maserati GranCabrios Bi-Xenon lights are enhanced by the swivel function which improves illumination of the carriageway and surrounding areas and hence improves driving safety while travelling at night on very winding routes. The electronic low beam control unit captures the instantaneous information relating to steering and angle as well as driving speed and actuates special electric motors to rotate the light cones. Highlights: system activates at over 5 Km/h maximum headlight rotation on the inside of the curve is 15 and 7.5 on the outside (always half) from 90 Kph to 120 Km/h the rotation angle is reduced above 120 Km/h and in reverse, the system is not active for safety reasons

Parking sensors: The significant size of the Maserati GranCabrio should not be cause for concern as the car is fitted with standard rear sensors built into the rear bumper which, combined with those fitted in the front (optional), assist when manoeuvring even in very tight spaces. The instrument panel shows the car surrounded by symbols indicating distances to obstacles (max/med/min). The symbols are lit up in 3 different colours according to the obstacles distance from the car: max-green, med-yellow, min-red; combined with acoustic warning signals. Cruise control: When driving at a steady speed cruise control is particularly useful because it allows the set cruising speed to be maintained automatically without having to press the accelerator pedal. When the driver switches on the cruise control a special gearshift setting is automatically selected based on the slope of the road and calibrated to obtain the maximum comfort and to avoid unnecessary gearshifts.

Maserati GranCabrio
Maserati Multi Media System

Electrical Systems and Devices

The info-telematic system on board the Maserati GranCabrio is derived from the new high-end telematic platform developed by Magneti Marelli. A 7" high-resolution colour TFT display in the centre of the dashboard allows viewing of the CD player, GPS navigation system (where cartography is available), radio and onboard computer (trip and car set-up information). The systems performance is enhanced by the use of a 30 GB automotive hard disk drive that can host the whole cartography and offer the juke-box function in place of the CD changer. The hard-disk drive, on the one hand, significantly reduces the journey calculation times, and on the other provides storage for about 180 hours of music, which can be copied directly from Audio CDs or downloaded in Mp3 file format through the USB port in the passenger side glove compartment. The system also allows you to use your own Mp3 player; in fact, most players on the market today can be connected through the USB port so that you can listen to your own music during the journey. As far as the GPS navigation system is concerned, the large colour display and a 3D graphics processor offer navigation with a very attractive perspective view. System control is easy and intuitive through the controls in the centre of the dashboard, while the most frequently used functions are accessed in complete safety through the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel; again from a safety standpoint, the audio system, navigation system and telephone (where fitted) can be operated without distracting the driver through a convenient voice command system. The "Text to Speech" voice synthesis system (artificial reproduction of the human voice) also contributes to user safety since it reads out SMS messages and TMC traffic information so that the driver is not distracted by having to look at the display. The Multi Media System includes bluetooth technology which allows a cell-phone (made ready) to be connected. The connection permits the user to handle phone calls (through loud speakers) and the phone book via the Multi Media System. Further, and specific for the GranCabrio model, the Multi Media System applies specific audio settings for hood open and hood closed conditions. Specific equalizing settings optimize the quality of the sound both for driving open and driving with the roof closed.

Maserati GranCabrio
Bose Surround Sound

Electrical Systems and Devices

The system is available as an optional (std in USA and Canada). To help reproduce music with both power and clarity, the Bose Surround Sound System features two separate bass sources. The dual low-frequency sources are engineered to work with the entire surround sound system to faithfully reproduce music across a wide spectrum of frequencies. Conventional approaches to multiple bass sources can be problematic. If the speaker is located too close to the listener the sound can be overwhelming. If it is too far away the sound can lack fullness. Improper placement can also cause the multiple speakers to reproduce certain frequencies out of phase, effectively cancelling out the sound instead of strengthening it. Working closely with the Maserati development team, Bose engineers used a detailed acoustic blueprint of the Maserati GranCabrio cabin to determine the proper speakers and mounting locations. They include custom-engineered enclosure with two Nd Richbass woofers mounted between the rear seats and a Nd Richbass woofer in a customised bass enclosure in the front, each powered by a single two-state modulation amplifier. The Nd Richbass woofer combines the lighter weight and power of a neodymium iron boron magnet with a design that enables it to produce the low-frequency output of a much larger, heavier speaker. It is housed in a customised enclosure placed unobtrusively behind the passenger side foot well. These specific speakers and locations were key to delivering low-frequency sound more evenly, providing more musical impact and preserving vehicle space. AudioPilot Noise Compensation Circuitry: The Bose Surround Sound System includes AudioPilot noise compensation circuitry, which features an algorithm customised for the acoustic profile of the Maserati GranCabrio cabin. It helps preserve the high-quality listening experience inside the vehicle by compensating for speed-related noise, as well as outside sound unrelated to vehicle speed. The AudioPilot system provides a wide range of compensation quickly and can better differentiate between sustained noise and short transient noise caused by speed bumps and other abrupt changes in road surface. This compensation is done automatically so that the perceived sound level and tonal balance remain consistent. With this, the driver can focus on the road and enjoy a listening experience closer to what the musical artist intended. The Bose surround sound system in the Maserati GranCabrio is powered by a Bose digital amplifier that includes Centerpoint and SurroundStage signal processing circuitry, and eight channels of custom equalisation. The Bose system allows the occupant to disable Surround Sound and Audiopilot functions directly from the MMS so as to enable a better listening experience in disturbed conditions.

Electrical Systems and Devices

The Maserati GranCabrio can also be equipped with an iPod dock on request. This enables the occupants to listen to music by connecting the player to the dock in the glove compartment with an adapter cable and use its principal functions directly via the multimedia system (MMS). The iPods functions are displayed on the monitor at the centre of the dashboard in the iPod Mode Menu.

A/C system The automatic dual-zone climate control maintains ideal conditions inside the cabin by automatically adjusting the interior temperature and the intensity of the ventilation in relation to outdoor temperature, sunlight intensity and air humidity. The fully electronic dashboard allows the driver and passenger to set their own preferred temperature separately between a minimum of 16 C and a maximum of 32 C, while the flow distribution also maintains the ideal climate in the back through two vents located on the centre tunnel. The system is fitted with an anti-fogging sensor: if the glass temperature drops below the "dew point" and causes the glass surfaces to mist up, this automatically operates to reduce the humidity content of the air. In the Maserati GranCabrio, the A/C system has been fine tuned to offer maximum comfort both the top down and up; it is capable of detecting the condition of the car and automatically reprograms its air output to maintain the temperature settings. Its sound level has also been reduced to minimise its impact on occupant comfort, notwithstanding the increase in air delivery required when the top is down.

Maserati GranCabrio 9. Body

Body

Body structure High-strength steel bearing monocoque with box-section panels and structure constructed in sheet galvanized, two-door cabriolet, four seats, longitudinal centre-front engine (between the two axles), rear wheel drive. Subframes Constructed in high-strength steel boxed sections; it integrates a tubular structure in the rear part to support suspensions and differential; front serves to support the suspensions and engine. The front subframe is a modified unit from the Quattroporte Sport GT S to increase rigidity, while the rear one is a complete carry-over. Safety The passive safety performance of the monocoque is conforming to worldwide regulations, integration of various design technologies for weight /performance optimization: steel structural part, aluminum bonnet and bumper front reinforcement cross member, boot lid in thermosetting composite material. The GranCabrio equals entirely the passive safety performance of the coup GranTurismo model, both for what concerns the protection of occupants as for pedestrian safety. Derived from the Quattroporte structure, with reduced wheelbase and rear overhang, designed to satisfy the most stringent American crash standards (FMVSS208, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard), front structure compliant with ACEA1 pedestrian impact standards.

52

Maserati GranCabrio

Body

Used materials The new bearing frame design boasts a construction with a mix of materials and technologies for weight optimization: the structural part is made of steel, the bonnet and bumper front reinforcement member of aluminium, while the boot lid is constructed in thermosetting plastic material (SMC - Sheet Moulding Compound technology). The boot lid consists of a single skin which incorporates the aerodynamic lip; SMC technology not only keeps the components weight down and is more resistant to minor damage and corrosion, it also allows for the application of an under the skin aerial which would not have been possible if a metal boot lid was used. Rigidity The body of the GranCabrio has been designed to ensure, despite the lack of a hard roof, maximum performance in terms of structural rigidity. This has greatly improved its handling, safety and comfort in all conditions especially bearing in mind its powerful and effective mechanical systems. The new frame was developed at the expense of thousands of hours of computer time and at least as much time again spent on testing. The rigidity of the new frame has set a new standard in the industry: the naked frame boasts a dynamic torsional frequency of 27.2 Hz. Given the wheelbase (2942 mm: the longest in its class) and the very slight increase in weight over the GranTurismo S (+100kg for the complete car), the frame and car rigidity values make the Maserati GranCabrio the new standard. Torsional rigidity: Flexural rigidity: 75000 daN/mm 659 daN/mm

In order to obtain the best handling and performance, the base of the - already rigid frame has been extensively modified using light alloy components. The biggest innovations in structural design have concern the following components: Reinforced side sills Reinforced floor structure Reinforced door frame and A-pillars Reinforced transverse cross members Welded steel luggage compartment floor Reinforced transverse bar between front suspension struts Aluminium sub-floor structural reinforcement plate bolted structural reinforcement bars in the engine bay and underneath the vehicle

Maserati GranCabrio Soft top

Body

The stylistic impact of the Maserati GranCabrio, both open and closed, would not have been possible if a foldaway hard top had been used, due to the many restrictions this choice would have imposed on the cars engineers and designers. The Maserati GranCabrios top employs state of the art technology in terms of materials, mechanism, cycle time and folding method. The soft top solution offers the following advantages: Lightweight construction (only 65 Kg in total) which results in a lower centre of gravity. Excellent thermal and acoustic isolation qualities of the multi-layer capote improves passenger comfort. Compact dimensions when folded away, having a minimal impact on the boot size. Stylistic advantages: both in open and in closed position the soft top allows to maintain the purity and elegance of the original design. Various colours available for the top fabric: in combination with a wide range of body colours, offers this wide personalisation options to the costumers.

The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically in only 28 seconds as long as the driving speed does not exceed 30 km/h. The soft top is operated by a hydraulic-mechanical system and controlled by a central roof ECU (NCP). In open condition, the soft top folds away completely under the tonneau cover.

The style of the three-layer soft top has been optimised for aerodynamic and acoustic performance, just as the insulation materials and construction offer the best comfort when driving that current technologies can provide. The top has been subjected to extended rigorous testing in the most inhospitable and inaccessible corners of the world and in all weathers to ensure a long service life (e.g.: New Zealand for testing at -20 C, Sicily for 40 C, Sweden for -30 C).

Its insulating central layer is designed to ensure unbeatable weather proofing, as well as acoustic insulation when the car is closed. This makes the GranCabrio suited for all year round use.

A structure with 5 aluminium / steel spokes eliminates the ballooning effect at speed and reduces drag.

Summer Opening function

Body

During the hottest days of the year, the Maserati GranCabrio makes getting into the car more enjoyable by means of its summer opening feature. When the key is inserted into the drivers door lock and turned clockwise for more than two seconds, the top starts to raise and fold away. This allows the passengers to get into the car with the top already down. The same feature is available in closure, by turning the key counter clockwise.

Interruption of the roof movement The following situations will interrupt the roof opening and closing cycle: Release of the switch before the opening / closing cycle is completed Driving speed exceeds 30 Km/h

The stand by situation of the soft top is indicated on the central info display

Note: see the vehicles owners manual for a detailed description of the roof operation and all related safety warnings.

Maserati GranCabrio
Roof closing cycle step by step

Body

When the NCP receives a roof closing request from the driver, it will only proceed if all conditions for roof movement are met. The NCP subsequently sends a command signal to the NPG and the NPP to lower both front windows (if closed).

When the front windows are completely open, the NCP will lower both rear side windows (if closed).

Both tonneau cover cylinders extend to unlatch and open the tonneau cover.

Both main cylinders retract to lift the roof out of its stowage space.

While the roof unfolds, the bowden cables attached to the roof structure that kept the Cpillar flaps stretched will release. The C-pillar flaps fold down by the force of their spring.

Maserati Academy

61

Maserati GranCabrio

Body

The main cylinders are completely retracted and the C-pillar flaps folded down.

The tonneau cover cylinders retract to close and latch the tonneau cover.

The tension bow cylinders extend. This stretches the front part of the roof and lowers the rear part of the roof.

The tension bow cylinders are fully extended. Now the electrical front latch mechanism takes over to lower the front part of the roof towards the windscreen frame. This movement tensions the complete roof. The front part of the roof latches to the windscreen frame.

A beep confirms that the roof is completely closed. If the driver continues to hold the button also the side windows will close. The NCP first closes the rear side windows.

Maserati Academy

62

Maserati GranCabrio

Body

The NCP sends a signal to the NPG and the NPP to close both front windows.

The cycle is now complete and the user can release the switch. The complete roof remains tensioned, also after the hydraulic pressure releases.

For the roof opening cycle, the different steps take place in the opposite order.

Roof structure Scissor mechanism Roof support frame Main cylinder Tension bow cylinder

The combined aluminium and steel roof structure (1) is operated by a cast steel scissor mechanism (2). The complete structure is connected to two roof support frames (left and right) which house also both main cylinders (4). The retracting of both main cylinders, which are extended when the roof is folded away, will lift the roof out of its storage area and start the unfolding. The tension bow cylinders (5) operate the scissor mechanism. This will further extend the roof towards the windscreen frame until the front latch mechanism takes over. At the same time, the tension bow cylinders lower the rear part of the roof (after the tonneau cover has been closed). The retracting of the tension bow cylinders generates the opposite movement. Each roof support frame is bolted onto the vehicle body, inside the roof storage area. Spacer plates between the roof support frames and the vehicle chassis are used to align the roof with the vehicle body.

Component description: DC-motor assembly: The 12V DC-motor is driven by the NCP and can rotate in two directions: left for the latching of the roof and right for unlatching. This is managed by the NCP by inverting the polarity of the power supply. The DC-motor drives two flexible shafts which are connected to the actual latch mechanisms at both sides. Flexible shaft: two bowden cable-type flexible shafts transfer the motor movement to both latch mechanisms. Note: the shafts are marked left and right, they can not be swapped.

3. Latch mechanism (left): The latch mechanism uses the rotational movement from the flexible shaft to drive a spindle mechanism which closes the latch and pulls the tensioning rod. A centering pin will guide the roof into the windscreen frame. If the shaft rotates in the other direction, the latch will open and the rod will push. Two added Hall sensors will detect when the DC-motor reaches its end position in both directions. 4. Latch mechanism (right): identical to the one at the left side, but without the two Hall sensors. 5. Tensioning rod (left + right): the last step in the roof closing movement (approaching the roof front to the windscreen frame) is completed electrically by a tensioning rod at both sides of the roof mechanism. By this way the roof remains tensioned also when the hydraulic pressure drops after closing. The opposite movement is done when the DC-motor inverts its rotational sense. 6. Latch receiver (left): this is integrated in the windscreen frame, left hand side. 7. Latch receiver (right): the latch receiver placed at the right hand side is identical to the one at the left hand side, but an added Hall sensor will detect if the latch is locked.

The tonneau cover has the purpose of removing the folded soft top from the eye when the roof is open. By this way the pure and clean body shape of the vehicle is maintained also when driven open. Other than a pure aesthetic function, the tonneau cover protects the roof and roof mechanism from dirt and dust and reduces aerodynamic drag. When the roof is closed, the tonneau cover acts as a platform on which the rear part of the roof will rest.

2 Left hand side latch

Right hand side latch with micro-switches

The tonneau cover is latched and unlatched hydraulically by the movement of the tonneau cover cylinders. To this end a latch mechanism is fitted at both sides of the soft top storage area. At the end of the tonneau cover closing movement, the retracting of the tonneau cover cylinder operates a lever mechanism which pulls the bowden cable and closes the latch in an overcentering movement. The opposite movement happens by the extending of the cylinder before the tonneau cover starts opening. Two micro-switches (right hand side only) will inform the NCP about the open /closed status of the tonneau cover. In case there is the need to manually open the tonneau cover, a manual release cable is attached to both latch mechanisms and can be accessed by removing two small panels from the boot side mouldings.

A striker with adjustable striker pin is fitted to both sides of the tonneau cover. The pin must be adjusted in such a way that the tonneau cover is perfectly aligned with the vehicle body when closed.

The Hydraulic (2) unit is made of a high pressure pump, a machined aluminium valve block, three solenoid valves and a reservoir. The high pressure pump (190 bar) is driven by a DC-motor and can rotate in two directions, one for the roof opening operation and one for the roof closing operation. The reservoir contains the hydraulic fluid for the system and has Min and Max level marks on it. Oil can be topped up by a filling tap. See the part Service operations on the roof system for oil level check and topping up indications. The three solenoid valves are commanded by the NCP and control the functionality of the tension bow and the tonneau cover cylinders. Further, the hydraulic unit contains an NTC temperature sensor to monitor the pump operating temperature. The hydraulic unit can only be replaced as a complete unit. It can be accessed by opening the tonneau cover and lifting out the roof. The hydraulic unit is wrapped in a foam cover (1) to isolate noise and vibrations. The six hydraulic cylinders (3 to 8) can each be replaced separately in case of damage. A total of 12 flexible high pressure pipes (9,10) are used, which can also be replaced separately in case of damage. They are fixed to the hydraulic unit and to the different cylinders by quick-release connections.

Pump

Reservoir

The hydraulic pump is activated only when a movement of the roof is requested. It can rotate in two directions. The rotational sense of the pump is inverted by inverting the polarity of the DC-motor, which is regulated by the NCP. A pressure control valve will regulate the hydraulic pressure at 190 bar in both directions. When the pump rotates to the left, the blue circuit will be pressurised and the main cylinders will retract. The roof will close (= unfold). When the pump rotates to the right, the red circuit will be pressurised and the main cylinders will extend. The roof will open (= fold away). The purple circuit is always pressurised when the pump rotates. Three solenoid valves (SV1, SV2 and SV3) are commanded by the NCP and will regulate the movement of the tonneau cover and the tension bow cylinders. When SV1 is activated, the tonneau cover cylinders will extend and the tonneau cover will open. When SV1 is deactivated, the tonneau cover cylinders will retract and the tonneau cover will close. When SV2 is activated, the tension bow cylinders will extend and the roof will be tensioned. When SV3 is activated, the tension bow cylinders will retract and the roof will release tension.

Misuse protection There are several protections against misuse implemented.

Body

The operating time of the hydraulic pump is monitored. To prevent overheat of the hydraulic pump motor and the printed circuit board (PCB) of the NCP, three temperature stages are implemented. Normal Pre-alert Alert Normal behaviour The user gets a warning on the instrument cluster, opening /closing allowed Only closing allowed

An NTC resistor is built into the hydraulic pump motor so the software can monitor what temperature the pump motor operates at. A thermal counter is implemented in the software, after a defined time of operation the pump motor and the PCB have to cool down for a defined time before the next operation can start. The NCP can only go to Roof Sleep mode when the thermal counter has reached zero.

Vehicle speed monitoring To protect the roof system, the vehicle speed will be monitored by the NCP during roof opening, during roof closing, in stop-mode and in manual mode. Depending on the velocity, the driver will be informed by several acoustical and optical warnings. To start a new hood operation, the velocity must be below 30 km/h. If the velocity exceeds 30 km/h, the hood operation will be stopped. The operator has to reduce the vehicle speed below 30 km/h and reactivate the roof operation demand to continue the hood operation. In case of exceeding the 50 km/h, a DTC will be stored into the error memory. Additional to the DTC the relevant sensor information is stored.

Body

Push buttons on the drivers door to operate the left and right rear window lifters. These interrupters form an integral part of the drivers door node (NPG). The window open /close commands are sent by the NPG to the NCP via the B-CAN line. A push button to operate the soft top is located on the central console. Two contacts provide each an active low signal to the soft top node (NCP). When the user releases the button during operation, the roof will stop moving.

Rear windows commands

Roof open /close button

Inputs / sensors An NTC resistor is integrated in the hydraulic pump unit to measure in which temperature area the pump motor is working. This is used to protect the motor from damage due to overheating. A double micro-switch is used to measure the position of the tonneau cover. The tonneau cover latch open is activated when the tonneau cover enters the striker during closing; the tonneau cover latch closed is activated when the tonneau cover has reached its end position during closing. The NCP receives a total of 8 Hall inputs to measure the position of various components: The Front Latch Open and Closed sensors are used to detect if the front latch motor starts moving, and reaches the end position. The sensors are positioned on the spindle mechanism of the left hand side front latch. The Front Latch Received sensor is used to detect if the front latch is closed. If the sensor is active, the roof is completely closed. This sensor is integrated in the right hand side latch receiver, located on the windscreen frame. The Tonneau Cover Open sensor is mounted onto the right hand side tonneau cover cylinder to detect if the cylinder is at the end position. Then the tonneau cover is completely open. The Tension Bow sensors (Open and Closed) are used to detect the position of the tension bow. This information is used to determine the next step in the roof opening and roof closing cycle. They are fitted on the right hand side tension bow cylinder. The Roof Open and Closed sensors are used to detect if the main cylinder is at the end position. They are fitted on the right hand side main cylinder.

Maserati Academy

83

Maserati GranCabrio
DC-motors

Body

The NCP controls the DC-motor of each rear window lifter. The opening/closing movement of the window lifters is managed by inverting the polarity of the DC-motor. When the window lifter reaches its end position, the increased current draw as a result of the increased mechanical resistance enables the NCP to deactivate the DC-motor. By this way there is no need to use traditional end-of-run micro switches. The front latch mechanism locks the roof to the windscreen frame. The front latch motor is operated by a relay which is integrated inside the NCP. The motor of the electric pump of the roof hydraulic system is controlled directly by the NCP by means of an integrated relay. No external relay is used. Each DC-motor output of the NCP is protected against short circuits. It uses voltage feedback to detect error situations and a shunt resistor to measure each motor current draw.

Solenoid valves The NCP activates three solenoid valves, which control the direction and functionality of the roof hydraulic system. The solenoid valves are integrated in the hydraulic unit.

Maserati GranCabrio Servicing the roof system

Body

The soft top system of the Maserati GranCabrio is designed to be completely maintenance free. No periodic maintenance is required for both the mechanical and the hydraulic parts of the system.

Cleaning the soft top Generally it is not necessary to clean the soft top every time the vehicle is washed. In most cases it will be sufficient to rinse the soft top with water only. It is advised to wash the soft top by hand only. Firstly remove dirt residues with a vacuum cleaner. Wash the canvas with water and a neutral shampoo by using a soft brush only. Do not use solvents, alcohol, petrol or generic detergents to clean the soft top. Do not use high pressure cleaning systems to clean the soft top. Avoid to wash the car in direct sunlight. After the canvas has dried, finish the cleaning treatment by rinsing the soft top with a product containing fluorocarbons to make the canvas water repellent. Note: if this treatment is not performed, the canvas will more rapidly get stained. Note: a series of specific products for soft top treatment are available from the Maserati parts department.

Repair operations on the hydraulic circuit

Body

The hydraulic circuit is designed to be maintenance free. If necessary repairs can be carried out: The hydraulic unit can be replaced as a complete component Hydraulic cylinders can be replaced individually The high pressure pipes can be replaced individually In case interventions have been carried out on the hydraulic circuit, the fluid level must be checked and topped up if necessary. The hydraulic fluid is specific and can be purchased through the Maserati parts department. Maximum attention must be paid that the roof does not move while the hydraulic circuit has been opened. This will lead to fluid spilling out of the circuit and the risk of oil stains on the roof fabric or inner lining.

CAUTION

CAUTION

2 1 1

The hydraulic pipes use quick-fit connections at cylinder side. They can be disconnected by withdrawing the securing clip (1) and pulling out the pipe from the cylinder (2).

The hydraulic pipes are locked to the hydraulic unit by means of a securing plate (1). They can be removed by loosening the securing plate bolts and moving it slightly to one side. The hydraulic pipes are numbered for identification, both at hydraulic unit side and at cylinder side (2).

Hydraulic fluid level check procedure

Body

Bring the roof hydraulically (not manually!) in the position as can be seen in the picture below: tonneau cover open and roof folded away. Check if the fluid level in the reservoir is between the Min and Max filling marks (therefore the foam cover must be removed from the hydraulic unit).

Caution: do not overfill (danger of bursting the reservoir due to no venting)

Filler tap

Bleeding the hydraulic circuit There is no specific system bleeding procedure as the hydraulic roof circuit is selfbleeding. Open and close the roof a few times hydraulically after the hydraulic circuit has been opened, this operation will eliminate possible air in the circuit. Check the fluid level afterwards and top up as necessary.

Specific hydraulic fluid

ATTENZIONE

Use exlusively the hydraulic fluid Aral Vitamol which can be ordered through the Maserati Parts Dept. This fluid is specific and not commercially available.

Maserati Academy

Maserati GranCabrio
Emergency roof closing procedure A manual procedure allows to close the roof in the event of a system failure.

Body

Important note: the manual closing procedure can only be performed after the hydraulic pressure has been released. When the hydraulic roof movement is interrupted at any stage, the system will remain under pressure, and therefore the roof will stay in position, for 10 minutes. After this time the NCP will release all solenoid valves, and by consequence also the system pressure. Only after this time it is possible to manually move the roof. Alternatively, disconnection of the battery earth terminal results in the same effect. Notes:
CAUTION

Make sure all side windows are lowered before executing the procedure. Given the weight of the roof structure, it is recommended to perform this procedure with two persons.

Closing procedure: Turn the ignition key to the Off position and wait for 10 minutes. Open the boot compartment and remove the covers at both sides in the boot in order to access the tonneau cover emergency release cables. Pull both cables to unlock the tonneau cover and close the boot lid.

Open the tonneau cover and hold it in the vertical position.

Lift up the soft top until about half way position so that it stays in an equilibrium position.

6. Lift the rear part of the roof and lower the tonneau cover until its fully closed.

Body

7. Lower the rear part of the roof to make it rest on the tonneau cover.

Maserati GranCabrio Rear window lifters

Body

The GranCabrio model features new rear side windows with lifter mechanisms. The window glass is bolted to the lifter assembly by means of three bolts which offer radial adjustment clearance. The lifter assembly is composed of a black steel frame plate which contains guides for the window lifter. The 12V DC motor is fitted on the frame plate and operates the window lifter by means of a bowden cable. The complete assembly is fitted in the vehicle body by means of three adjustable screws with lock nuts: The two top screws allow for adjustment of the window in its own plane One bottom screw is used to adjust the window preload

The assembly further contains adjustable stops to regulate the height and the angle of the window glass in the closed position.

In the event of a failure or breakage, the system can be replaced as a compete assembly or separately (window glass and lifter mechanism).

Correct alignment of the rear windows is crucial in order to avoid premature wear, wind noises and water ingress. Note: see the workshop manual for the adjustment procedures and specifications.

Body

Rear seats The rear seats are separate and feature the same profile as the front seats, specifically designed to accommodate adult passengers. The rear compartment space is divided by a fixed central armrest styled to contribute to the atmosphere of luxury and comfort characteristic of the interior as a whole. Two small lamps located under the rear side armrests illuminate when the doors are opened to light up the rear seats a gesture of welcome to the occupants. Further signs of the attention paid to the rear passengers are the two cup-holders (equal to the front ones) and day compartment on the central tunnel which complete the set of onboard storage compartments. The result is a level of comfort among the highest in the cars class in terms of seating position and legroom. Once the occupants are seated, they do not find themselves in the cramped vertical posture typical of most competitors rear seats, but rather in a more relaxed, laid back position.

Windstop When driving with just one passenger, the occupants can enjoy the sound, performance and fluid handling of the Maserati GranCabrio in exceptional comfort thanks to the windstop (optional) developed specifically for the car. The style of the windstop, which is wind tunnel tested, reduces the flow of air inside the compartment when driving with the top down: with the windstop engaged, the air flow from the rear is reduced by 70% while the air speed inside the compartment is reduced by 50%. When the car has four occupants, the windstop can be stored in its bag. This fits in the luggage compartment with a special retainer system to stop it moving around. Please note that, if the windstop is stored inside the trunk, the spare wheel cannot be stored. For some markets the windstop comes as a standard item.
