+75 Geothermal Heat Pumps Solar Water Heater Photovoltaic Panels along south wall Rooms that arent in use are not ventilated or lighted

+75 Composting Toilets convert human waste into fertile garden soil over the course of three years When creating driveway, only cut down 8 trees and planted over 100

+ 100 Restoration Center will provide culture and growout facilities for underwater grasses, marsh plants, trees, shrubs and oysters Gradually eradicating invasive marsh reeds that destroy native species Re-planting with native grasses that provide both significant water quality benefits and excellent wildlife habitat

+ 75 Southern orientation coupled with an external shading system help use the sun for natural heating and lighting Louvers help shade sunlight in the summer to reduce peak electric loads but allows sunlight during winter

+75 Green spaces absorb heat Heat Islands, such as a large dark-surfaced parking lot, alter the environment around them. At the Merrill Center, materials that prevent heat build-up were chosen and trees planted around the building to help cool the area

Uses Daylight
+ 100 Northern Clerestories Large expansive southern glass with exterior shading Even light distribution throughout the space Light sensors and electronic dimmers minimize electric lighting

+ 50 CBF developed a total traffic management plan to cut down on air pollution Make bikes available for errands Encourage the use of electric vehicles by providing free battery charging Incentives for staff to bike to work and facilities such as bike racks, showers and changing rooms

+50 Use local materials that can be easily replaced if needed Renewable materials such as cork flooring and bamboo Minimal materials exposed walls Recycled and recyclable materials

+ 75 Open office planning allows both natural and mechanical ventilation to move more freely through the building An automated system instructs employees to open their windows for fresh air when the outside temperature and humidity are right The day lighting system improves working conditions for CBF staff and increasing productivity

Serves as an Icon for Regeneration

Although the building utilized a lot of regenerative and sustainable principles, there were areas that needed to be improved upon. We added additional trees to clean the air and planted community vegetable gardens and fruit trees as a food source As a result of the improvements, the building is more of an icon for regenerative design
