SCENE 2
(In a dark auditorium, a phone rings three times, and then a beep is heard) DREW Good day and thank you for calling Drew Johnson. Were not able to get to the phone right now, but please leave your name, number and a brief message, KIMBERLY

and Kimberly Johnson

and well get back to you just as soon as we can. God Bless and have a good day! (Spotlight comes up slowly on stage right. We see a kitchen. JUSTIN is sitting at the table, surrounded by empty beer bottles. His head is hung and he is obviously disturbed.)

God Bless and have a good day!

JUSTIN Drew its your neighbor Justin. We see each other in the hall. You always tell me to call you if I need anything. You never forget to tell me youll be praying for. Well, I need something. I just dont know what. Can you come over? Ive been thinking a lot about this Jesus you always talk about; how hes helped you in your life. How he brings you peace. I dont know, man; I just know I cant take it anymore and dont know what Im going to do. Call me. 555-7192. Out! (Spot up all the way at this point) Well, here I am; alone again. Where are all my friends? Gone? Or busy! My cable got shut off again. The girlfriend dumped me! And Drew isnt even answering his phone. Maybe that was a miracle. (Pause) But Im alone . . . again! My life stinks. And, to top it off, with no money until payday, theres not even booze in this place! (Pausing to think, then standing up from the table and heading CS, JUSTIN shrugs) Hmm! That seems to be the one thing that does make me happy; at least for the moment. At least . . . sometimes anyway. (Forceful) Why? Why me! Is this youre cruel punishment Jesus? What did I do to you? Ive never asked you for anything. Nothing! Wait, why am I talking to you! Where have you been when I actually did need you? I can recall a time or two when I really could have used your help, but no - (strong) absent again. Ive been alone and needing someone. If I really think about it, Im
Page 9

SCENE 2; CONT
quite mad. Mad at you God. Then again, Ive said I dont really believe in you so I guess all is good. Truth be told, I cant be mad at someone, or something, that doesnt exist. (A cell phone rings; JUSTIN answers his phone) Hello? DREW Hey Justin, Its Drew. You called? JUSTIN Umm, yeah, that would be me! DREW Are you OK buddy? Tell me whats going on? JUSTIN No. Im not ok. I called you didnt I? You have practically begged me to call, and when I do, you dont answer. As for whats going on, well I was just talking to(stops himself and reconsiders his answer) myself; I mean talking about that very thing; being alone that is. But dont worry, Ill be ok I suppose. Made it this far and Im doing great, right? DREW Justin, you dont sound like youre doing great. A friend! Thats what it sounds like you could use. Hey listen, Kim and I were just getting ready to take off somewhere, but let me talk to her real quick. I know she will understand that you need a friend. Weve all been there. As a matter of fact, we were just praying about you this morning. Besides, I think our plans can be rearranged. I mean, cmon, it was just dinner with the in-laws! That can wait! JUSTIN Whatever! If its that important to you! You know where I live. Im not going anywhere. (Justin acts like hes going to hang up the phone, then quickly directs) One floor up and one door over; number C-15! (JUSTIN hangs up the phone. He sits down on the edge of the stage. Worship music is heard softly in the background) (Soft spotlight come up on Level 3, illuminating Jesus) JESUS

Justin, my child, I am here for you.

JUSTIN (Looking around and speaking in quick and short words)

Page 10

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 2; CONT
Who is that? Where, where are you? JESUS It is I, Jesus, and I am here watching over you Justin. I have never left you or forsaken you. You are a child of God and I love you very much. Tell me your troubles with your life. I am always eager to listen to my children when they call on me. JUSTIN Oh really? Are you sure? Ive never heard from you before this very moment! JESUS You have never called on me before, but I assure you, Ive been waiting for this day. I knew it would come. JUSTIN Oh, cmon Jesus! You wouldnt understand. I mean you youre the perfect one? Thats what Im told. Sinless! I could never live up to your expectations, and you could never understand how I feel, so dont waste your time listening to me carry on. I mean really, Just look at me! Depressed! Broke! Drunk! Well, maybe just wanting to be. Ive lost all my real friends. Only ones left around are the ones that like to go drinking; especially when Im buying. I hate my job. My family doesnt even understand where Im coming from either. They just seem to want to tell me how wrong I am and to tell me about you. Their just like my neighbor, Drew. I just cant live up to everyones expectations, ya know. I try to be good, but that only lasts for a few weeks; maybe a month. I dont know what to do. Its hopeless. Im hopeless! I feel like Im in a prison and the sentence if forever. I feel like everyone has shut me out and the only thing that makes me feel good IS drinking. My family, and Drew, repeatedly tells me of this Jesus Christ YOU. How you love everyone. How youre always there when someone needs you. But it seems like, well, youre never there for me. I guess Im the one person that even you can not help. JESUS Ive been waiting for you to ask for my help. Its your choice and your will Justin. I will always come when the children of God call. Its as simple as calling on my JUSTIN (Interrupting JESUS, JUSTIN stands. He speaks in an arguable and sarcastic tone) Always come? Always? I can point out times when I really needed you and you didnt show up. One of those times was only about the lowest point of my life, up until now that is. (Thinking and pondering in his mind) I think it was about three years ago. I was mad; really truly mad. My girlfriend had just broken up with me so I decided to head downtown to Smileys for some cocktails. I ordered a drink and sat there, all alone, crying. Crying to you! After a couple more drinks, no more money and still no response from you, I gave up and headed home. Let me tell you how the night only got better, Jesus! I was stopped by a cop. Now come on; you say youre there for me? Was it not just moments before that I broke down in public, begging you for your help? I think the
Page 11

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 2; CONT
very least you could have done was to answer me, but instead, you send a cop! But umm, no, no . . . youre always there for me; I dont have to worry. JESUS Drew let me tell you what really happened that night. Theres a bit more to that story that you dont seem to recall, but I do. That night, after you left your girlfriends house, I did answer you. I called on your friend Kimberly to call you. She is always praying for you and asking me to watch after you. Shes one of my true and faithful servants, with a loving and caring heart for others. Do you remember she asked you to dinner so you two could pray together about your situation and talk about the direction of your life? JUSTIN She does? She prays for me? I havent seen her since we were in High School several years ago. She does regularly check in with me though. I think she might even live in the neighborhood. Hmm! But shes always praying! And so wrapped up in church or helping someone, (Realizing what he has just said, and stopping himself) Anyway, go on JESUS You told her you had plans with some friends, and that she just needed to focus on her upcoming wedding to Mr. Marvelous! Ill be ok is what you told her. Is that correct? JUSTIN (Shamefully acknowledging the occurrence) That does sound more like what happened so far. JESUS It was at that point that you headed to Smileys. And furthermore, you complained about hitting every yellow light; it was going to make you miss happy hour and the cheap drinks. It must have been some sort of small miracle that you had to stop at every light you came too. JUSTIN Thats right, they were. Every single light! If I remember right, I think I was yelling at you then, too? I didnt get there in time and that really cut into what I could afford to drink that night. By the way; I guess Im sorry. I never realized just how much I did talk - or yell - at you until you pointed that out. JESUS Thats ok; at least I know youre talking to me. Youre not the only one who comes to me in anger. I often get blamed for the less favorable things in life. Justin, lets look at that night and exactly what happened after you left the bar. Thats what I really want you to see and understand. You got into your car and headed down Park Street towards home
Page 12

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 2; CONT
JUSTIN Yeah. It was late; I was tired, and once againfelt like I was all alone. Thats when that stupid cop pulled me over. I just knew I was getting a ticket. I wasnt that drunk, but I realize that I should not have been driving at all. I guess I wouldve deserved that ticket; I wouldve deserved whatever I got. JESUS The officer did pull you over, but it was only because you had a broken taillight. Youre very good at playing sober. So much so that up to that night you had escaped ever being stopped. That is why that officer only gave you a warning for the taillight issue. After he ran your license and returned to your car, he told you he would follow you home, correct? He said he was going that way and that he would make sure you made it safely. JUSTIN He also told me to find a good church where I could have a good support system, and then he said hed be praying for me. Im not sure where that came from; I didnt say much to him. Nevertheless, he did follow me home, but he told me to take the industrial loop downtown because of some accident. I guess he heard about it on his radio while he was running my license. Do you know that that detour was like 40 blocks out of my way? And I was so tired already. JESUS Yes Justin, he has been praying for you. I put it on his heart that you needed me. That officer is another one of my faithful servants. And, he was correct; there was an accident a little bit further down Park Street. Just moments after that officer pulled you over, a building that was in a major renovation, collapsed. There was considerable damage to the surrounding buildings and structures; damage to the sidewalks and other property. But the most damage happened to the road itself. Several tons of iron and brick lay covering Park Street. The very street you would have been traveling on in just a few moments. JUSTIN (Justin, obviously disturbed over what he has discovered, begins to speaks more brokenly) You mean, if I hadnt been stopped If I had kept going? Iron and brick? Just moments later and I could be . . . I remember the morning news, and all the commotion about this building collapsing. But no one was hurt because it was night. No one was hurt! I wasnt hurt? Im alive today because of that copofficer stopping me. Wait a minute. That officers name. I remember it. Its always stuck with me. His name? I can see his badge. Its a familiar name. JESUS Yes, you know his name. Ive surrounded you with my army. My servants have been around you in prayer and in the physical.

Page 13

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 2; CONT
JUSTIN (Gasping) I know it. His name is Officer Johnson. (JUSTIN begins to sob and falls to his knees) Yes, it was Officer Johnson. That was officer, (pausing again) Officer Drew Johnson! JESUS See Justin, you are my child and I am always with you. I am there even when you dont think you need me, because the truth is, you need me every breath of every day. I died for you because I love you so much. And there is a way you can always feel me near; invite me in to your heart and I will set you free. Free from all that binds you and I will forgive you of all those things you feel are unforgivable. Just ask me in. Once I live within your heart, your loneliness will subside because I will fill it with my love. JUSTIN I want that feeling. Jesus. I am sorry for what I have put you through. I can see you were with me every step of the way; every time I turned around. You never left me. I surrender to you and I give you this life knowing only you can change it. I know now that you can change everything and I will never be alone again. I ask you to be Lord and Savior over me. You have saved me, and healed me with your blood, but most importantly, I know you have FREED me. (Door knocks as light fades on JESUS) DREW Justin, its Drew. Hey man, are you in there? Is everything OK? JUSTIN Yeah, come in. The doors open. (DREW enters and sees JUSTIN on his knees, wiping the tears from his eyes) Hey, um, thanks for coming over. I just had a talk. A talk with your,MY Jesus. I have something to tell you about a night just a few years ago. Let me tell you what Jesus showed me and how He has set me free (Stage lights fade out.)

SCENE 3
(Screens fade up with rolling dark clouds as music starts) SOLOIST 3 (Low lighting; Ballet dancers, double dressed with black over white, appear from main level curtain. Backlight fades up on level 2 scrim) (You can see two soldiers and a figure being forced down onto a cross. Below, you see several prisoners that are frozen, in shackles, positioned on a dark brick wall. Prisoners are also double dressed with white under black. Dancers do a taunting dance amidst the stage) Death rides blackened clouds across the sky The Son of man lays down to die (We see two soldiers pounding nails into the figure on the cross) With every pounding blow upon the nail (Thunderous crack is heard above all activity) Thunder rumbles all through hell (Backlight fades out on level 2 scrim) And from death's barren womb the captives cry Who is there to free us should He die (Lights fade up main level to reveal prisoners chained to a wall) His grave becomes a door; He enters in To face the author of all sin Defying death and the grave He takes their keys (Dancers begin to break some Prisoners free. Prisoners rhythmically wander about stage, on music cues.) And with them every captive frees And from death's barren womb the captives cry Arise for our redemption draweth nigh (C) For He holds the keys He holds the keys And though we've been held captive At long last we are free For He holds the keys (Other Prisoners begin to fight and tug at the chains. A struggle between ballet and hip-hop dance occurs) Against the gates of hell I now resist For the shackles that had torn my wrists Lay before me now upon the ground To sin I am no longer bound For from death's barren womb He heard my cry

(Loosed Prisoners and Dancers break remainder of chained Prisoners free from their chains.) And loosed the chains that bound me to a lie (Screens fade into sunny skies from the dark cloudy skies) (Ballet dancers peel off their black layers, revealing angelic-like costumes underneath) (C) For He holds the keys He holds the keys And though we've been held captive At long last we are free For He holds the keys (Remaining cast begin to break free from their black clothes) And to all the things that have kept you away That keep you defeated day after day after day The heartache that nobody sees That eats at your soul like a cruel disease He who set the captives free It is He, it is He who holds your keys (C) For He holds the keys He holds the keys And though we've been held captive At long last we are free For He holds the keys He holds the keys (Lights fade out)

SCENE 4
CARRIE (There is a simple set which resembles a park-like setting on stage left) (CARRIE wanders down the center of the audience illuminated by a spotlight only, aimlessly talking into the air. Do not rush dialogue.) What am I going to do? I have two little mouths to feed. No job. I cant bring myself to spend one more night with Gerard. He may pay my bills and put a roof over me and my kids heads, but I also know if I dont keep him happy, that will all be gone and Im back on the streets again. People are already starting to question me on a regular basis about certain things. (CARRIE turns towards the audience and removes her sunglasses to reveal a bruise on her cheek just below her eye.) I want to feel special and feel important. I want something more for my kids. I dont want them growing up and going down the same path I am going down. I mean, look, I dont blame my mom, I know she did what she had to do, like I am doing right now, but theres got to be something better. I see all these girls with their mothers and get so jealous and angry. Its not fair I lost my mother at 12, but if I dont change things, I know my kids will be saying the same thing about me. Mama always told me she loved me and to better myself, but I just dont see how I can. Dropping out of school at 16 no longer sounds likes the great idea it did when I was 16. Now, I have no skills. Oh God, what am I going to do? (CARRIE has a visible change in her thought process. She sits down on the park bench) Then again, if I werent around, my kids might get adopted by some wealthy family, or an educated family. Maybe they dont need me - I made it without my mother. Im pretty much worthless according to most people I talk with. It might be best if I were to just,be done with this life. Oh my God! (Soft spotlight comes up on Level 3, illuminating JESUS) JESUS Carrie, I am hear, and I hear your cries for help. CARRIE Who is that? JESUS I am sending you my faithful servants. Please listen to them; they are here because I sent them. CARRIE Listen to whom? (ANDREA, dressed in Sunday-like attire, enters through the audience and sees Carrie. CARRIE notices Andrea coming and returns her sunglasses to her face.)
Page 17

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 4; CONT
ANDREA Hiya Carrie! Its great to see you! How are you doing today? CARRIE Im doing OK; just trying my best to stay cool. How are you doing today? Why are you so dressed up? Was it a funeral or wedding? ANDREA (Laughing) No, No, nothing like that at all. I just came from a womans Hour of Prayer luncheon. It was a wonderful time in the Lord. You should join me sometime soon. We meet every two weeks. Where are the children today? (LORI and SUSANNE, entering from stage left, are also dressed nicely like Andrea. Lori has a pronounced limp) CARRIE I needed some time to think. They are with a sitter for a while. LORI Hi again Andrea SUSANNE Hey Sister Andrea

ANDREA Hi ladies. Come on over here and meet my beautiful friend Carrie! CARRIE Hello ladies. (Fidgeting with her appearance) Nice to meet ya both. LORI What a pleasure to meet you Andrea SUSANNE Good Afternoon to you Andrea

ANDREA I was just telling Carrie about the Prayer luncheon and invited her to join us some day! I think she would really enjoy it. Dont you think so too, ladies? LORI / SUSANNE Absolutely CARRIE Oh no. I could never! You dont understand. Im not, well, holy like you guys are. Ive got some terrible troubles and would only bring everyone else down. Besides, I have two children to care for - alone, and I aint got no nice clothes like those.
Page 18

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 4; CONT
SUSANNE Well two children is no reason to say no! We have a sitter at the luncheons. Theyre a blessing to the children. LORI (Interrupting) And let me tell you this right now; not one person there is perfect! I myself have more faults than the whole state of California put together, and thats no lie!

ANDREA See Carrie, isnt that the same thing Ive told you time and time again? No one is going to judge you or care how you look. Its a time of fellowship, LORI Sharing and caring, SUSANNE Prayer and discussion, ANDREA And most important, ANDREA / LORI / SUSANNE (ANDREA, LORI & SUSANNE all in agreement speak powerfully) Loving! CARRIE (CARRIE, now becoming a bit uncomfortable begins to ramble on in a frustrated and embarrassed manner) It all sounds nice, but you just dont understand. I mean, I know Andrea must have told you how horrible I am! SUSANNE Shes never said anything negative about you CARRIE (Becoming louder and yet almost speaking into the air as if she were alone) Shes never told you that Im a single mother living with my boyfriend; boyfriend number 5, to be exact. LORI Shes only ever asked us to pray for your peace and salvation!

Page 19

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 4; CONT
CARRIE (Becoming aggravated to the point of hysterics, yelling and tears CARRIE stands up and moves slightly upstage) How hes abusive to me, and to my children. Never told you how I cant go anywhere without his permission and I live on an allowance he sees fit for me. If I question him in any way, its another slap across the face, or if I make him mad enough, how he has knocked me across the front room. Once, he even stopped the car and pushed me out - in front of my kids - and I had to walk home across town. (CARRIE is now crying, and her aggravation has turned into hurt) And I still have to continue to explain to people how I slipped on the wet floor while mopping for the third time this month (Pulling the glasses from her face and falling to her knees) And thats how I got this black eye! ANDREA No Carrie, Ive never said a word about what you have told me. As a matter of fact, that last part, about the abuse and humiliation, you never even shared that with me, (pausing) before just now. (Kneeling beside Carrie) But regardless of the situation, Carrie, I am not here to judge you. I have no right to cast a stone against you because my sins are no greater or no less than yours. I am only here to love you as my Heavenly Father has loved. Unconditionally! SUSANNE / LORI (SUSANNE & LORI kneel beside the Carrie and Andrea) And were here too, beside you all the way; if for no other reason, to pray for you and love you. CARRIE (CARRIE gets up and walks away from the girls) But why would you be here for me? Im a hopeless case. A lost cause! Why involve yourselves with the likes me? JESUS Carrie, these women are here on their own will. They do understand and are loving servants. I have healed their pain and sorrow and I want to do the same for you. Dont shut them out. Listen to them. LORI The likes of you? You mean, a person dealing with life and its decisions and the choices we have to make every single day? Carrie, we all struggle with things, even as Christians. Ive already told you, we all have our faults. (Reaching into her purse and grabs a picture. She gets up and joins Carrie)
Page 20

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 4; CONT
But Jesus still loves us unconditionally. You see this? (Shows Carrie the picture) This is my beautiful daughter. Shes 5 now and has a loving father, Colby. However, life wasnt always so easy, or tender. Ive had a long struggle for peace and the honest truth Carrie, is that I was a prostitute for almost 5 years. I sold myself everyday of the week so I could eat and put a roof of some sort over my head. Then one day, I got so fed up and tired of it all and just couldnt take it anymore. I had no respect for myself. I felt like you do right now; no one and no place to turn too. One afternoon I started walking and thinking and wound up at a bridge outside of town and in one quick moment; jumped. I tried to kill myself. As you can see, it didnt work, and thats where I first met Colby. Hes a rehabilitation therapist; I had broken both my legs when I jumped of the bridge that night. Luckily, I survived; and most importantly, so did my unborn daughter, Michelle. (CARRIE turns in astonishment, towards LORI) I was pregnant, and didnt know it. I didnt even have a clue who the father might be. I wasnt even sure I wanted a child. I even lived life with some resentment for a while. I was in a lot of pain, but because I was pregnant, there was a limit to the pain killers I could take. Everyday, during rehab, Colby would tell me about the one man I could never live without; Jesus Christ. I think he knew I couldnt run away, and took advantage of that situation. He later told me that hes prayed for me everyday since the day we met. He prayed for me, my unborn child and my salvation. He was faithful in his witnessing to me until one day, I accepted Jesus as my own personal savior; just two months before Michelle arrived. Colby and I were married one year ago tomorrow and yet through all the pain and tragedy of this, Jesus has given me a beautiful family (LORI caresses her stomach) a family that grows, even as we speak. CARRIE Jesus! He did this for you? Andrea has told me about him many times. Shes told me of the many miracles he has done in the past and still continues to do for people today. I guess I just feel like Im too hopeless a case. I feel like Im imprisoned; so far away from that sort of joy and happiness. SUSANNE Carrie, we are all hopeless without Jesus. I, too, have a past that would seem unforgivable. But thats the wondrous thing about Jesus. He died, on a cross, for me and You! JESUS Carrie, it my blood that has washed Lori clean. It is my blood that gives Susanne hope in a hopeless world. It is my blood that gives Andrea peace in the midst of every storm. It is my blood that will wash you clean and make you whole.

Page 21

HE HOLDS THE KEYS

SCENE 4; CONT
ANDREA His blood washes our sins away. You dont have to walk alone Carrie. Jesus will cover you and your children with His unending love. (CARRIE looks upward towards Heaven) CARRIE I want that peace! I want that hope! I want to feel this love you give. Jesus, wash me in your blood. Surround me with that love that never dies. Jesus I need you. (Looking at each woman endearingly as she speaks their name) Andrea. Lori. Susanne. I need a change. I want a change. I want what you each have. Can you,can we pray. I want Jesus Christ to be the lord of my life and His love,to free me from this lonely existence. (Lights fade out)

STATUE OF LIBERTY
In New York Harbor stands a lady, With a torch raised to the sky; And all who see her know she stands for Liberty for you and me. I'm so proud to be called an American, To be named with the brave and the free; I will honor our flag and our trust in God, And the Statue of Liberty. On lonely Golgotha stood a cross, With my Lord raised to the sky; And all who kneel there live forever As all the saved can testify. I'm so glad to be called a Christian, To be named with the ransomed and whole; As the statue liberates the citizen, So the cross liberates the soul. Oh the cross is my Statue of Liberty, It was there that my soul was set free; Unashamed I'll proclaim that a rugged cross Is my Statue of Liberty!

HE HOLDS THE KEYS
Death rides blackened clouds across the sky The Son of man lays down to die With every pounding blow upon the nail Thunder rumbles all through hell And from death's barren womb the captives cry Who is there to free us should He die His grave becomes a door, He enters in To face the author of all sin Defying death and the grave He takes their keys And with them every captive frees And from death's barren womb the captives cry Arise for our redemption draweth nigh Chorus: For He holds the keys He holds the keys And though we've been held captive At long last we are free For He holds the keys Against the gates of hell I now resist For the shackles that had torn my wrists Lay before me now upon the ground To sin I am no longer bound For from death's barren womb He heard my cry And loosed the chains that bound me to a lie Chorus And to all the things that have kept you away That keep you defeated day after day after day The heartache that nobody sees That eats at your soul like a cruel disease He who set the captives free It is He, it is He who holds your keys Chorus He holds the keys
