Competency Mapping - A Holistic Approach and a Drive for Industries

Human resource management is a process of bringing people and organizations together so that the goals of each other are met. Nowadays it is not possible to show a good financial or operating report unless your personnel relations are in order. Over the years, highly skilled and knowledge based jobs are increasing while low skilled jobs are decreasing. This calls for future skill mapping through proper HRM initiatives. Competency mapping is important and is an essential activity. Every well-managed firm should have well defined roles and list of competencies required to perform each role effectively. Competency mapping identifies an individuals strengths and weaknesses in order to help them better understand themselves and to show them where career development efforts need to be directed. Competency mapping is one of the most accurate means in identifying the job and behavioral competencies of an individual in an organization. Competency is a set of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to perform a job effectively and efficiently. Not only must HR professionals possess traditional technical competencies in the areas of staffing, training, compensation, performance management, etc., they must also possess Business and management acumen to effectively relate their technical expertise to the strategy of the business. Competencies are derived from specific job families within the organization and are often grouped around categories such as strategy, relationships, innovation, leadership, risktaking, decision making, emotional intelligence, etc.

Competency: A person related concept that refers to the dimension of behavior lying behind competent performer. Competence: A Work related concept that refers to area of work at which a person is competent Competencies: Often referred as the combination of the above two.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE A Competency is the capability of applying or using knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and personal characteristics to successfully perform critical work tasks, specific functions, or operate in a given role or position. Personal characteristics may be mental/ intellectual/cognitive, social/emotional/attitudinal, and physical/psychomotor attributes necessary to perform the job described competencies as underlying characteristic of an individual, which are causally related to effective job performance

AIM OF COMPETENCY MAPPING To create an excellent mind it employees by mapping their superior performance with right job To understand the gap between present level ability and desired proficiency level that required for their job To achieve important result for a particular job

10 STEPS INVOLVED IN COMPETENCY MAPPING:

The STEPS involved in competency mapping to identify the key competencies for an organization and the job within the function: 1. Identify the department for mapping. 2. Identify the Structure of the organization and select the grades & levels. 3. Job Description from individuals and departments. 4. Conducting Semi-Structured interviews. 5. Collecting interview datas. 6. Classify the required Skill list. 7. Identify the skill levels. 8. Evaluate identified competencies and skill levels with immediate superiors and other heads of Concerned departments. 9. Preparation of Competency calendar. 10. Mapping of Competencies.

Success of many organizations lies in the area of Training, Learning and Development that builds employer employee relationship

As a HR Manager, one has to establish and foster a culture, building strong working relationships within the organization, working closely with the team, ensure that needs are met, issue are addressed and situations are managed in a collaborative, consultative, creative and flexible manner. One has to continuously enhance the process and be a part of the business plan. Competencies, model for HR head has 11 competencies. They are Strategic Thinking, Business Acumen, Relationship Building and Networking, Team Leadership and Development, Results orientation, Impact and influence, Communication, Personal Effectiveness, Internal Customer Orientation, Human Resource Expertise and Change Leadership

Objective:
As global business competition shifts from efficiency to innovation and from enlargement of scale to creation of value, management needs to be oriented towards the Strategic use of human resources. The ability of companies to effectively carry out competency based human resources management.HRM is becoming more and more crucial for their survival which are important to address with the changing nature of organizations

BENEFITS OF COMPETENCY MAPPING


Competency mapping is a process which identifies the key competencies for a particular position in an organization using it for job-evaluation, recruitment, training and development, performance management, succession planning, etc. As a result of competency mapping, all the HR processes like talent induction, management development, appraisals and training yield much better results. The competency mapping process needs to be strongly integrated to help companies raise the bar of performance expectations

COMPETENCY BROAD CATEGORIES Generic Competencies Competencies which are considered essential for all employees regardless of their function or level. - Communication, initiative, listening etc.These are basic competencies required to do the job, which do not differentiate between high and low performers Managerial Competencies Competencies which are considered essential for employees with managerial or supervisory responsibility in any functional area including directors and senior posts

Competency based recruitment Competency based interviews reduce the risk of making a costly hiring mistake and increase the likelihood of identifying and selecting the right person for the right job Competency based Performance Appraisal Competencies Enable 1. Establishment of clear high performance standards. 2. Collection and proper analysis of factual data against the set standards. 3. Conduct of objective feedback meetings. 4. Direction with regard to specific areas of improvement Competency based training 1. Competency based appraisal process leading to effective identification of training needs. 2. Opportunity to identify/ develop specific training programmes - Focused training investment. 3. Focused Training enabling improvement in specific technical and managerial competencies

Competency is a set of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to perform a job effectively and efficiently/excellently and it describes what has to be done, not how. Competency mapping should not be seen as rewards and it is not only done for confirmed employees of an organization and it can also be done for contract workers or for those seeking employment to emphasize the specific skills which would make them valuable to a potential employer.
