1 Description on the advantages with the C2SAT system

C2SAT Terminal offers superiority to any available in terms of performance and reliability: Better accuracy: The system achieves superbly high tracking accuracy. C2SAT prefers to use the more accurate tracking measurement to measure performance instead of the commonly used pointing accuracy, mainly because it includes both the losses due to pointing- and the polarisation misalignments. The high tracking accuracy is a result of the systems gradient tracking method, a predetermination tracking parameter and the 4-axis design, where the fourth axis refers to the cross-level elevation. Higher accuracy results in: Improved availability; More efficient use of shared lines and network bandwidth; Lower transmission power; And wider operational area in the satellite footprint. It also permits equally excellent communication while operating under severe and harsh weather conditions.

4 (35)

Always on: The Zenith Paradox occurs when a vessel rolls back and forth and the satellite is located in the area between the antennas extreme positions. This is a significant problem with the 3-axis system, provoking sync losses, needs for restarts and downtimes. The 4-axis design antenna does not need to rotate in every roll, hence no Zenith Paradox. This gives a reliable Satcom that is always on, not almost always on services. Faster system: The system is faster due to the gimbal design with AC servomotors on each axis, and the gradient satellite tracking method on all 4 axis. The system locks on the satellite within 6 sec acquisition time, starting from its parking position (competing systems need minutes). This speeds up the transition from one satellite to another and results in extremely fast recovery from sync loss. Static balancing of each axis The terminals servomotors keep a firm grip on each axis just like a robot. Hence, balancing is not a critical issue. It also gives us no unnecessary torque on the system, removes a source of failure and makes the installations faster and easier. It does NOT need to be balanced at site. Robust system: Because the gimbal design excludes the balancing counter-weights usually necessary in centre pole-based systems, the servomotors on the axis are subjected to less momentum/torque. This also leads to lower stress on the mechanical rig. The construction is ruggedized and designed to meet U.S. MIL-standards, including shock, vibration and EMC. Modular approach: A span of reflector sizes up to 2.4 metres fitting the same mechanical stabilised rig are available, covering different bands, e.g. X-band, C-band, Ku-band and Ka-band. Having one basic system for all bands reduces service and maintenance costs for customers running several networks. Throughout the C2SAT product portfolio, the same components are re-used. If the client is using a 2.4 m version, the same active components will be found in the 0.9 m version, with the advantage that same spare parts are used and the crew/operators/service technicians get used to the equipment.

5 (35)

Simple to service and maintain: The mechanical rig is designed to be extremely easy and simple to service and maintain. Most of the service and maintenance can be carried out on the open sea. Accessories: A specially designed Radome offers low attenuation. Space in the radome is sufficient to accommodate an Air Condition device, for heat exchange and to keep condense water at a minimum. An easy to use graphical user interface (GUI) is provided which an operator with no previous satellite experience can operate.

Independence from the Ship gyro: C2SAT can, optionally operate independently and not necessarily be connected to the Ship gyro. This is particularly appreciated by the Navy as it keeps different systems operative even if one system should fail.

2 General system description

The C2SAT antenna system can theoretically be divided into two main parts. The first part is the mechanical robot with sensors, actuators and calculation units. The second part is the RF-equipment. The first part of this chapter will describe the mechanical robot. The Antenna Control Unit is the main intelligence in the system. It collects data from the sensors, process the data with calculations and sends it out to other units. The communication is done through the internal CAN-bus. The ACU is a small-sized embedded controller, located close to the modem. The ACU sends information to all units on the CAN bus. One primary piece of data is the position commands that are transmitted to each axis controller every 50ms.

Unit IMU Ship Sensors - GPS - Compass Ship PC TDU Axis Controllers

Data Platform rotations around three orthogonal axes Longitude, latitude (speed, heading) Heading Commands from user Received signal strength Position of axis 1, 2, 3 and 4

7 (35)

The ACU receives information about where the Ship is located on earth and in which direction it is heading. It also receives information about how each axis is currently positioned, what the received signal strength from the satellite is, and how the deck of the ship is moving. The ACU uses this information to calculate how each axis should be positioned in order to compensate for the motions of the ship. These calculations are sent to the axis controllers, which in turn sample the encoders and send motion-commands to the AC servo amplifiers. The closed-loop of the encoder and the AC servo amplifier is kept at a high speed, assuring smooth motions and a high immunity against sudden beats and torque variations. The IMU and the GPS-receiver are providing motion-measurements of the vessel, brought back in to the succeeding iteration of calculations inside the antenna control unit. The IMU offer both long- and short-term stability, assuring that the antenna control unit is provided with reliable measurements. The tracking device proposes small adjustments as the signal strength is varying, based on statistical/history-based conclusions.

2.1 Units The units in the stabilised antenna system can be divided into two groups: the above deck equipment and the below deck equipment. Below deck equipment Antenna Control Unit - ACU Ship PC Gyro compass RF equipment Satellite modem

Above deck equipment The following equipment is located inside the radome: GPS antenna Tracking Device Unit - TDU

8 (35)

Air Condition Unit Axis Controller 1, 2, 3 and 4 Inertia Measurement Unit - IMU Ship Sensors interface card RF equipment Low Noise BlockDownconverter - LNB Block UpConverter - BUC / Solid State Power Amplifier - SSPA Feed horn Reflector

2.1.1 ACU Antenna Control Unit. The ACU receives information from all the units connected to the CAN-bus. Commands from the user are sent through the Ship PC that has a Graphical User Interface installed. It is also possible to connect a computer screen and keyboard to the ACU and send commands directly through a DOS environment if the need should arise. 2.1.2 Compass The compass used in the system is a gyrocompass, which is already installed on the ship. It supplies heading information so that the system knows in which direction the ship is moving. If a gyrocompass is unavailable there is always the option of using any kind of heading sensor that fulfils the accuracy requirements and can communicate through the NMEA 0183 protocol. For example a Furuno GPS antenna. 2.1.3 GPS The GPS supplies the system with positional data (longitude and latitude). In order for the ACU to calculate in which direction the antenna should be pointed to aim at the satellite it needs information about where the ship is located on the earth in longitude and latitude. The GPS also measures ship speed (and heading in some cases). The GPS antenna (and receiver) is located inside the radome. The Ship Sensors Interface card is connected to the GPS and receives information through the NMEA 0183 communication protocol. This information is sent to the ACU through the CAN-bus. 2.1.4 IMU : Inertia measurement unit

9 (35)

The IMU's senses the movements of the platform around three orthogonal axes. The IMU consists of three gyros. They each sense rotation around an axis. The gyros are mounted on the walls of a high precision-machined box to ensure that they are orthogonal. The IMU also has an accelerometer, which enables gyro bias compensation thanks to advanced filtering and estimation of the data from the gyros. 2.1.5 TDU : Tracking device unit The TDU is responsible for measuring the strength of the signal received from the satellite, which is sent through the LNB. It can also measure the transponder spectrum. This information is sent to the ACU. A part of the signal from the satellite is tapped off from the RX-coaxial cable in the Connection Box so that the TDU can receive the signal. The Tracking Device Unit is located inside the Connection Box on the foot of the mechanical rig. 2.1.6 Ship PC The Ship PC is located below deck and is the man-machine-interface. This is where the user enters commands to control the antenna. The user can for example select the satellite he wishes to communicate with and in what polarisation. A Graphical User Interface is installed on the Ship PC, which makes it very easy for the user to control the antenna.

2.2.1 TDU The Tracking Device Unit is located inside the Connection Box on the foot of the mechanical rig. The TDU is connected to the coaxial cable and measures the signal from the satellite. 2.2.2 LNB / LNBC The Low-noise Block downConverter amplifies the signal and downconverts the frequency. In Ku-band a wide band LNB is offered, covering the whole Ku-band. This has the advantage that no change of LNB is necessary when switching of the satellite is carried out, as long as it is operating in Ku-band. This is also the case in C-band. 2.2.3 BUC / SSPA The Block UpConverter (or SSPA) is located behind the reflector inside the antenna gimbal. On the P7 mechanical rig, amplifiers up to 200 W are possible and on the P7B, amplifiers up to 16 W are possible. 2.2.4 Slipring The Slipring has one Rx-channel and one Tx-channel. The signal is sent with Intermediate Frequency through the Slipring.

2.2.5 Power outlet A 230VAC power outlet is located inside the radome. This power outlet can be used for laptop computer power, power tools or other equipment that will facilitates service.

12 (35)

2.2.6 Radome An especially sandwich designed Radome offers low attenuation. Space in the radome is sufficient to accommodate an Air Condition device, for heat exchange and to keep condense water at a minimum. The radome is made of Rohacell sheet with Kevlar sheet layers on both sides with fibre resin.

Monitoring & Control (M&C)

2.3.1 Ship PC The Ship PC based monitoring and control subsystem allows readings of critical parameters and alarm signals to be retrieved. These may be used to activate front panel indicators or to be sent through a serial interface for remote controls. Commands to both the internal and external subsystems are sent via the monitoring and control subsystem from the Ship PC or remote control positions. 2.3.2 GUI The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is used by the operator to being able to make easy selection between different satellites and send commands to the antenna system, including all the options and parameters to align the satellite link. 2.3.3 Functions and modes of operation The user is able to Select a satellite from a list/database of available satellites. 8 Radio Link Point-to-Point

C2SAT introduces a Radio Link Point-to-Point VSAT named C2SAT 1.3m RL, a new 4 axes military and commercial high performance Stabilised Antenna Systems the maritime industry. Sub metre reflectors and sizes up to 2.4m can be mounted into the same stabilised robot. The standard configuration supports 155 Mbps SDH, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, transmissions both ways. The stabilised robot can be customised for other radio solutions and frequencies. The standard configuration utilises the 6 GHz radio frequency. C2SATs 1.3m RL model is a spin-off from the satellite terminals and has the same excellent performance regarding the stabilisation. The traffic signal or a reference signal is used as beacon. C2SAT enables reliable Point-to-Point radio link between e.g. FPSOs or small mobile oilrigs communicating with mother ship, all units exposed to dynamic conditions. Different solutions make it possible to maintain the broadband communication on rotating oil rigs or FPSOs and simultaneously compensate for multi path fading, coming from the sea at different sea states regarding wave length and wave height are possible.

Optional: Reflector sizes from sub metre up to 2.4m

The most sophisticated solution comprises four antennas in two pairs. One pair located at bow and one pair at stern. Each pair do automatically compensate for multi path fading by space diversity. A switch and an over ruling management unit co-ordinates the two pairs regarding forbidden zones for best communication in all positions and sea states.

12 C2SAT Sub System Specification

No. 1.0 Specification/Comment a) Antenna pedestal, sensors, motor drives b) Control Unit1 2.1 Ship motion It is of less importance to split the dynamic conditions 2.3 corrections required into pitch roll and yaw. The important factor is how the of system: Roll, Pitch, resultant towards the satellite behaves. C2SAT does Yaw not only keep the pointing within 30 @8 s all 4 axes included, but also keep the combination of pointing and polarisation alignment within 0.1 dB RMS. 2.4 2.5 Surge Sway, Heave 0,5g all modes 2.6 Turning rate 100/s. To fulfil performance during specified dynamic conditions 18/s is enough since C2SAT has 4 axes contributing to the resultant vector. 4.1 Pedestal type 4 axes for all sizes of reflectors up to 2.4 m all frequencies. Additional cross level for improved resultant pointing vector and solving the zenith paradox during dynamic condition between lat 30N and lat 30S @ 30 @ 8 s 4.2 Axis configuration AZ, EL1, EL2 & POL 4.3 Tracking receiver Integrated. Input signal level: 1 dB above the noise floor. Input frequency: 950 2150 MHz (L-band) integrated. Output: Numeric on the CAN-bus, integrated. 4.4 GPS Can be started without GPS. Position settings can be made manually., If GPS signals not are available. For specified performance and easy satfinding C2SAT does need position accuracy of 80 km for weak satellites (footprint border) or 250 km for strong satellites. Bearing accuracy to be 1.5. Since it is on the CAN-bus max distance is several 100 metres. The integrated GPS has 12 channels and utilises 7 satellites simultaneously. Position accuracy is 25 m and time is 1 micro second synchronised to GPS time. For C2SAT updating some every second is enough. The GPS is connected to the CAN-bus or to the Parameter System
