Company Profile

Nihon Kohden is Japans leading manufacturer and provider of medical electronic equipment. We are the number one supplier to Japan and one of the leading suppliers globally. The company has subsidiaries in North America, Europe and Asia, and distributors around the world.

Histor y
1951

Half a century of contributing to medical

1951: Yoshio Ogino founds Nihon Kohden with the unique vision of fighting disease with electronics. 1951: Nihon Kohden develops the worlds first

ME-1D

electroencephalograph which is completely AC powered (ME-1D).

1960s

1967: Japan's first ICU monitor is installed at Tohoku University School of Medicine in Sendai city. This monitor, the ICU-80, is developed by Nihon Kohden. 1974: Nihon Kohden researcher Takuo Aoyagi develops the principle of pulse oximetry. All pulse oximeters today are based on Dr. Aoyagi's original principle of pulse oximetry. 1979: Nihon Kohden is commissioned by NASDA* (National Space Development Agency of Japan) to develop instruments for Japan's first contribution to experiments onboard the US space shuttle.

PWTT triggered NIBP measurement (Nihon Kohden patented)

PWTT (Pulse Wave Transit Time) triggered NIBP measurement increases the chance to detect a sudden change in blood pressure. PWTT can be calculated from ECG and SpO2 non-invasively. If PWTT exceeds a threshold during periodic NIBP measurement, it triggers NIBP measurement. Peak of R-wave

Rotary HFO

Unique rotar y valve technology alternates air way to the membrane chamber between the delivery side (push-in) and the suction s id e ( pu ll- ou t) of th e b l owe r in inte r va ls corresponding to the Hz setting. This generates a power ful oscillation of circuit pressure and extends the range of applicable patient weights.
