APC UPS Setup

Install and connect the UPS


1. Install the UPS in the rack according to the included instructions a. Mount the two (2) battery packs at the bottom b. Then the UPS and transformer on top 2. Connect the external battery packs and transformer according to the included instructions 3. Connect the environment monitoring probe to the UPS 4. Connect the UPS to the Internal VLAN on the Switch Port 8

Configure the UPS


Device IP Configuration Wizard

Insert the APC CD Select Device IP Configuration Wizard Click Install the Wizard When prompted Run the file (2X) Follow the wizard, accepting the defaults After the install the Wizard will start a. Set the IP address according to the network diagram 7. Ensure Web browser to device is checked and click Finish

IP Configuration through HyperTerminal, Use this method if the IP Configuration Wizard does not work (90% chance it will not work)
1. Connect the serial cable that came with the UPS to the Serial port of a computer 2. Open HyperTerminal and use the following settings a. Bits per second 9600 b. Data Bits 8 c. Parity None d. Stop bits 1 e. Flow Control None 3. Connect and hit enter until you are prompted for a username a. USERNAME: apc b. PASSWORD: apc 4. You will then receive this message

Hit 2 for Network Hit 1 for TCP/IP Hit 1 for Boot Mode Hit 4 for Manual Set the IP, Subnet, and Gateway using the menu Hit Esc to back out to the main menu Hit 4 to log out

Configuring the UPS through the Web interface


1. Open IE and navigate to 10.0.0.9 2. Logon a. USERNAME: apc b. PASSWORD: apc 3. Do not let Windows remember the password 4. Select the Administration tab 5. Select the General sub tab 6. Under Date & Time select Mode a. Select Synchronies with NTP server b. Primary server: IP of Project X server c. Time Zone: Set for server physical location d. Update interval: 168 Hour e. Select Update using NTP now 7. Click Apply 8. Go to the Security sub tab a. Under Administrator i. Username: apc ii. Old Password: apc iii. New password: Use password list iv. Click Apply (you will need to log in again) 9. Select the UPS tab 10. Under Configuration (tree on the left) select General a. Audible Alarm: Enable b. Last Battery Replacement: Month/ Year UPS was installed c. External Batteries: Total number of battery packs attached d. Click Apply 11. Under Configuration select shutdown a. Low Battery Duration 10 Minutes b. Click Apply 12. Select Diagnostics from the tree on the left NOTE: This will run the batteries down to nothing to determine the runtime with the current load. In order to ensure accuracy make sure all components are powered on. a. Select Runtime Calibration b. Click Apply

PowerChute Network Shutdown Software


The following steps should be done on all servers on the internal network. 1. Download J2SDK from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html a. Run j2sdk-1_4_2_15-windows-ia64.exe b. Follow the installation Wizard 2. Insert the APC CD 3. Close the auto run 4. Open command prompt and a. Navigate to X:\pcns\windows\windows64 (replace x with the letter of the CD drive) b. Run [Path to Java.exe file]\java cp .;pcns221win64.jar;util.jar load i. Path to java should be c:\J2SDK1.4.2_15\bin c. The installer will now start 5. Click Next at the welcome screen 6. Agree to the license and accept the default path 7. When prompted, select Typical Install 8. Enter the management cards IP address (UPS IP), this can be found on the network diagram, but should be x.x.x.9 9. Under security configuration change the administrator password to match the settings for the UPS, this can be found on the password sheet DO NOT CHANGE THE VERIFICATION PHRASE, click Next 10. Make sure communication was successful, click Next

Configure Servers for Restart


BIOS Settings
This will configure the servers to restart once power is restored, and set the initial 60 second delay needed to ensure proper server startup. On all servers; 1. 2. 3. 4. Pres F9 during boot to enter BIOS Select Server Availability from the main menu Select Automatic Power On and Enable On all servers except the primary domain controller (PROJECTX01) a. Select Power-On-Delay and set to 60 Seconds 5. Hit Esc multiple times to exit the BIOS and pres F10 to confirm when prompted

Configure Boot Delay


This needs to be done on all servers except the primary domain controller (PROJECTX01). This is done to ensure that the primary domain controller has sufficient time to boot before the other servers start. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Right-Click my computer and select properties Under the advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery Click Edit under system startup Change timeout to 90 Add the following line to the end of the file a. Multi(1)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition /noexecute=optout /fastdetect b. HINT: Copy the last line of the file, and change Multi(0) to Multi(1) 6. Close notepad, saving the file 7. Close all properties windows
