Properties and Transformation of Matter

Marian Franciesca A. Santos De La Salle University-Dasmarias Dasmarias, Cavite Philippines

ABSTRACT The properties and changes in matter is the topic for the experimental procedure. It shows how matter undergoes changes physically and chemically. To test and know the properties and transformations of matter, we used different chemicals which include Isopropyl Alcohol, Magnesium Ribbon, Naphthalene and Ethanol. The properties and transformation were observed through testing them in different temperatures. The changes and properties in matter were determined after the experimental procedure.

INTRODUCTION Matter is anything that occupies space and has volume. The properties of matter can be physical and chemical property. Physical property of matter is determined without an accompanying change in the identity of matter such as weight, height, volume, color and many others. On the other hand, chemical property is determined with accompanying change in the identity of matter such as flammability and stability in air. Changes in matter also take place under different phenomenon. Like the properties of matter, changes in matter can be physical or chemical. Physical changes involve size, shape and other physical state while chemical change involves the formation of new substance from a different substance. The knowledge of extrinsic and intrinsic properties of matter also helps us determine whether a change 1 occurred in a matter.( )

MATERIALS AND METHODS First, we tested the changes and properties of Zinc and Ethanol in a room temperature. The Ethanol was put in a watch glass and a piece of Zinc was put in a test tube containing 5mL of 0.1M HCl. They are then observed for 5 minutes. The Magnesium Ribbon and Ethanol was introduced directly on the flame. Through the use of test tube tongs and Bunsen burner, the Magnesium ribbon was introduced to the fire and observed.1g of Naphthalene was put in the covered beaker and placed on a water bath with low flame. The chemicals which undergo high temperature procedures was also observed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The provided chemicals were introduced and tested to different temperatures showed us their properties and how they change. We observed how a substance forms into a new sunstance and how a substancw reacts with another different substance.

Matter as we all know changes from time to time. We learned how to differentiate the physical from chemical change. We also learned how to determine the physical and chemical properties of matter. The experimental procedure shows accurate results on the changes and properties of matter. The records and observations were all accurate thus making this experimental procedure a success.
