212 Initially we tried the raw diet and saw a reduc tion in seizures however she was diagnosed as having diffic ulty absorbing this food (diarrhoea and weight loss). We put her onto a dog food c alled Earthborn Primitive and saw again a huge reduc tion in seizures but skin allergies (itc hiness and hot spots). We were then instruc ted by our vet to put her onto Royal Canin presc ription diet obesity management ( it was hoped this would help her feel full). We saw an explosion in seizures during this time(up to 4 seizures a week) and 3 weeks ago I put her bac k on earthborn primitive and have not had a seizure sinc e although skin allergies have returned. Will be trying other food by the same manufac turer (earthborn) Barf diet no He c an't have any treats, espec ially restric t him with eating anything other than his kibble, if he does get his paws on something he does seizure within around 6 hours Wheat free We notic ed that she seemed to have more seizures when on a diet that had some grains in it (healthy grains, but grains nonetheless). We put her on Canine Caviar grain free and do not give her grains of any kind in her treats or c anned food. Raw feed Green beans and organic dog food grainfree dry food. I'm not quite sure how it works :-/ Is it nec essary to take your dog to a neurologist ? I would like an easy homemade diet to feel my dog . Just like to know as muc h info as possible Everything, I really don't understand c ause, triggers, anything else that would help him I spend an inordinate amount of time researc hing and trying to learn how to help my little guy. Suc h a horrible c ondition. It's been over 5 years, not muc h I don't know about! no no, exc ept maybe more info on helping the ataxia when the meds c annot be lowered. no yeah, why hasn't there been more c linic al studies done with dogs to find better meds, the dosage protoc ols for eac h med. and a better c ure than just c hanging the length of time between seizure's. any ongoing researc h projec ts no c onstantly learning No no Not really. No. I am an avid researc her/reader sinc e this has made an appearanc e in our lives. Information is invaluable!

Natural but inexpensive treatment options No. Apprec iate the help from those on epi sites and just the knowledge we are not alone in both our worry and love of our pets. Tough question. 127 I try to read about everything and anything I c an find pertaining K9 epilepsy. I haven't found anything spec ific (brand names etc .) when it c omes to the best diet. I'm very interested in holistic supplements to help her with restlessness after seizure, possible organ damage from meds, overall things that enhanc e her life quality. no no No Not at this time. Was nor prepared for the Ataxia from the Phenobarbitol. She is getting better but slowly. Hoping it still c ontinues to improve over time. No No no my dog used to have it every 30, 60, even 90 days without it, he was more likely born with it, as he had it sinc e 13weeks of age, when we brought him home, so probably before as well... then he had a nasty ac c ident and suffered heavy c onc ussion, during his rec overy he went 3 months with out it, time when he was on steroids, and then every 21 days, and if we have visitors in the house for more than week, he has it every 14 days, now he is every 21-26 days. also he started with one fit, then later as he grew older he was getting 6-7 fits in 24-30 hours period, after ac c ident we started to medic ate him, and after a year when i inc reased his phenobarbital dose, he has 1-3 fits in an hour, and its over, and next day is hyperac tive. i wonder if the steroids would help him to get rid of it, or not, and also how to know what meds is right for him and if we should switc h it to different meds. No No. no what else c an be done to prevent seizures. Our neuro told me (again), its going to happen, love him, have fun with your dog, keep c alm. Natural treatment or supplements that might suc c essfully reduc e the inc idenc e of seizures. More c lear understanding if why seizures oc c ur what spec ific ally happens in the brain. Understanding how and why stress may trigger a seizure in a dog with idiopathic epilepsy. No. My vvet is great. The list is WONDERFUL. Lots of resourc es out there:-) Na Updates How to find the trigger No No Not sure not really as all are so different No Mo No Always willing to learn more. Curious about the gold ball surgery. not yet As my epi is getting older, I'd like to inquire about doing an autopsy on him for researc h purposes. If looking at an epi's brain, organs and c ombining that info with seizure history and medic ations helps us learn about epilepsy, I'd definitely go for it when the time c ame. Its a diffic ult dec ision to make (and hard c onversation to have) but I'd do anything to fight this horrible disease. 10/27/2013 1:41 PM

FiveSibes Live "Gib Strong" Survey: Tell Us About Your Epi-Dog (K9 Epileptic)
157 158 No The last 2 years of her life, our husky was seizure free. We absolutely didn't waiver on medic ation sc hedule and kept a very stable routine to minimize her stress. If we left for vac ation (whic h was rare!) we paid friends to stay at our house versus boarding in a kennel so she wouldn't have any anxiety from being kenneled in strange surroundings. She also had hip dysplasia, so walks were kept short, whic h again seemed to help her with not being 'overly exhausted' whic h c ould trigger a seizure. She absolutely loved the bathtub filled with c ool water and would hop in and lay down in the water - we would hold a hand beneath her c hin and pet her and she would nearly fall asleep. :) no are diagnosis c ame when he was 7.5 years.. he had never been exposed to toxins. it just c ame out of the blue in February of 2012. it seem to have hit every 17 to 18 days, having 3-4 c lusters. Oc tober 2012 he had lost mobility for several days, Marc h of 2013 he had 8 with an 11 hours that was the day I let him rest, my question is why would a healthy ac tive dog all of a sudden develop this issue? Can't think of anything at this moment. No Not at this time. No I'm sure we would all like to understand how our babes get it in the first plac e whic h is the great unanswered question :( Why it is so hard to regulate idiopathic epilepsy in dogs? More c ase histories No We would love to no as muc h as we c an about epilepsy bec ause it suc h a nasty illness. Not c urrently No Not at the moment. ? I would like to know more about things like diet and moon effec ts for example over 90% of my dogs seizures happen 3 days before or after the full moon. Also would love to share and maybe see other people seizure management plans. no - the group keeps me informed It's an ongoing learning experienc e How many rec ital valiums c an be applied in one seizure and 24 hours? It seems like the more that is known about epilepsy, the more we realize how little is ac tually known. What I want to know, there just isn't an answer: I want to know exac tly what c auses idiopathic epilepsy (beyond a brain malfunc tion - "why does it malfunc tion; what c auses it?) And I want to know how to c ure it. Not just manage it, but how to get the brain to heal and/or to func tion like a normal brain with a normal seizure threshold so medic ation is no longer needed. *sigh* Wishful thinking, I am sure. My vet has little knowledge and c an't answer questions on better drugs to use for c lusters Bo Supplements or herbs/etc to work with traditional meds. no No. No I have found all the answer I needed online exc ept when will there be a c ure! 10/27/2013 7:25 AM 10/27/2013 7:14 AM
