1. (a) Define
i. self inductance
ii. mutual inductance and
iii. efficient of coupling.
(b) Two coils of inductances 4 and 6 Henry are connected in parallel. If their
mutual inductances is 3 Henry, calculate the equivalent inductance of the
combination if
i. Mutual inductance assists the self inductance
ii. Mutual inductance opposes the self inductance [6+10]

2. (a) Give the applications of self excited generators.


(b) An 8 pole d.c. shunt generator with 778 wave connected armature conductors
and running at 500 rpm supplies a load of 12.5Ω resistance at terminal voltage
of 50V. The armature resistance is 0.24Ω and the field resistance is 250Ω. Find
the armature current, the induced emf and the flux per pole. [6+10]

3. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a Transformer.


(b) “The transformer has very high efficiency compared to any other electrical
machine.” Explain Why?
(c) A 10 KVA, 440/3300V, single Phase transformer, when tested on open cir-
cuit, gave the following figure on the primary side: 440V, 1.3A, and 115W.
When tested on short circuit with full load current the power input was 150w
Calculate the efficiency of Transformer at
i. Full load UPF and
ii. Half full load at 0.8pf. [3+3+10]

4. (a) Draw a neat sketch showing the various parts of a Synchronous Generator and
Explain each part briefly.
(b) Explain why a 3 Phase induction motor can not run at Synchronous speed.
(c) A 3 Phase 50 Hz slip ring induction motor runs at 290 rpm at full load.
Determine
i. the number of poles
ii. the slip at full load and
iii. frequency of rotor currents [6+4+6]

5. (a) Discuss the classification of electrical measuring instruments employed for
measurement of current.
(b) Explain the significance of controlling torque and damping torque relevant to
the Operation of indicating instruments? [6+10]

6. (a) Derive an expression for the efficiency and ripple factor of a half wave rectifier
(b) A half wave rectifier is used to supply 50V dc to a resistive load of 800 ohms.
The diode has a resistance of 25 ohms. Calculate ac voltage required. [8+8]

7. (a) Explain the terms break over voltage, holding current and forward current
rating as used in SCR analysis.
(b) An ac amplifier has a voltage gain of 55 and a power gain of 456.5 The ac
output current is 24.9mA rms and the ac input resistance is 200 ohms. Find
i. the current gain,
ii. the rms value of the ac input current,
iii. the rms value of the ac input voltage
iv. ac output resistance [8+8]

8. (a) Why trigger pulse is used in CRO? Give the relationship between the trigger
pulse and the sweep in an oscilloscope.
(b) Explain how FET and Bipolar transistors are used as Probe for CRO.

1. (a) Give the formulae to convert star connected resistances into equivalent delta
resistances.
(b) Find Rab across a-b terminals of the network shown in figure 1b [6+10]

2. (a) Give the applications of d.c. compound motor.
(b) A four pole, 220Vd.c. shunt motor has 540 lap wouond conductors. It takes
32A from the supply mains and develops power of 5.59 Kw. The field winding
takes 1A. The armature resistance is 0.9 Ω and the flux per pole is 30mwb.
Calulate
i. the speed and
ii. the torque developed in N-m. [6+10]

3. (a) Derive an approximate expression for voltage regulation in a transformer in


terms of the parameters.
(b) A 5KVA, 220/110V single Phase transformer has the following parameters
referred to secondary side Resistance =0.1 ohm Reactance =0.4Ω. Calculate
% voltage regulation
i. at full load unity P.F
ii. at full load 0.9pf lag
iii. at half load 0.8pf lead. [8+8]

4. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a 3-phase induction motor.


(b) Explain clearly with necessary circuit diagrams the tests to be conducted
on a Three Phase alternator to determine the synchronous impedance of the
machine [6+10]

5. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the working of a repulsion type of moving iron
Instrument?
(b) Derive the expression for deflecting torque in the above type of M.I.instrument.

6. (a) Draw and explain the circuit diagram of bridge rectifier and also draw the
output wave form
(b) A half wave rectifier uses a transformer of turns ratio 2:1.The load resistance
is 500 ohms. If the primary voltage is 240V(rms), find dc output voltage and
PIV ? Assume the diode to be ideal. [8+8]

7. (a) Derive the relationship between the collector current and collector emitter
leakage current , and also derive the relation between α and β
(b) The silicon transistor in the CE bias circuit shown in figure 7 has a β of 100.
Find the bias point? VBE =0.7V. [8+8]

8. (a) A cathode ray tube has X-plates defection sensitivity of 0.5mm/v. An alter-
nating voltage of 40sin2 π×50t volts is applied to X-plates. What trace will
you observe on the screen? Give the dimensions of the trace.
(b) Derive an approximate expression giving the deflection produced by a long
deflection coil in a CRO. Coil runs for the entire length from the final anode
to the screen. [8+8]

1. (a) What are the different types of elements that constitute an electric circuit?
(b) Find the current through the 10Ω resistor in the circuit shown in figure 1.

fields are excited? Show the connection diagram of each type?
(b) A 4 pole wave wound armature has 720 conductors and is rotated at 1000
revolution per minute. If the useful flux is 20 mwb, calculate the generated

3. (a) Derive the EMF equation of a single Phase Transformer.


(b) The maximum flux density in the core of 240/2400 volts, 50 Hz single Phase
Transformer is 1.0 weber/sq.m.If the EMF per turn is 8 volts, determine
i. The primary and secondary turns and
ii. Area of core [8+8]

4. (a) Discuss in detail, the Pre determination of voltage regulation of an alternator


from the open circuit and short circuit test data.

parameters.

(c) Calculate the % Voltage regulation at full load

(b) Draw and explain the circuit of biasing the npn transistor.
(c) The emitter current in a certain npn transistor is 8.4mA. If 0.8% of the mi-

current is 0.1µA, Find
i. the base current
ii. the collector current
iii. the exact value of α and

8. (a) How is the electron beam focused to a fine spot on the face of the cathode ray
tube?
(b) Why is an attenuator probe used for measurements with oscilloscope?
(c) What is delayed sweep? Why it is used in oscilloscopes? [6+4+6]

(b) The primary voltage on transformer in center tap full wave rectifier is 120Vrms,
50 Hz and N1: (N2/2) is 15:1. Diode voltage drops are 0.7 V.
i. What should be the value of RL if the average current in Rl must be 0.5A?
ii. What power is dissipated in RL ?
iii. What minimum piv rating is required for the diodes ?

7. (a) Explain why is collector wider than emitter and base?


(b) Why collector current is slightly less than emitter current?
(c) Calculate IE in a transistor for which β = 50 and IB = 20 µA. [6+6+4]
