Nahmada hu wa nusali ala rasoolahil kareem, Amma baad, faoothobila hi minash shaytaanir rajeem. Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh, Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him and seek His help. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our evil deeds. Whomever Allaah guides cannot be led astray, and whomever He leaves astray, cannot be guided. I bear witness that there is no deity, no god, no object worthy of worship except Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We all know how this world is so engrossed in and how we are all so involved with politics, financial ups and downs, society and its issues, and even our own personal lives. And we all face the ups and downs through the challenges of life. We all lead very busy lives, we are all often stressed out, we are all often very tired, yet with the Mercy of Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala we manage to continue living our lives and deal with the day to day. Alhumdullilah. Even though we manage to get through whatever situation Allah has decreed for us, we can all, always, use some help. And thum Alhumdullilah, even after dealing with all of our daily worldly struggles we manage to remember Allah throughout the day, and in particular at least 5 times a day by performing the fardh salah. And we know that after the Shahadatayn, salah is the most important pillar of al-Islam. The salah helps us towards achieving our purpose of creation, as Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala has told us in surah al-Dhariyat, surah 51, ayah 56: And I have only created jinn and mankind to worship Me. (Quran 51:56) But I dont want to talk about salah today. Today I want to start a series of khutub, and talk about another form of worship. One of the greatest forms of worship. In a hadith it is reported that the prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said Dua is (the essence) of worship. And Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the Quran, in surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60: And your Lord says: "Call on Me (Make dua to Me); I will (of a surety) respond to you. Verily those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter the Fire of Hell, humiliated. " (Quran 40:60)

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said Dua and the seeking of protection from Allah are like weapons, but the sharpness of a weapon is not sufficient for it to cause effect, for the person that handles it also plays a role. So whenever the weapon is a perfect one, having no flaw in it, and the forearm is strong, and there are no preventing factors, then it will cause an effect on the enemy This is drawing an analogy of a weapon with dua. If the weapon, lets suppose a spear, is sharp, but the person is weak, then throwing it wont cause any effect because it may fall before it hits the target. Or if the person is strong, but the weapon is dull, then again it doesnt have the effect. Similarly if our dua is strong, but we are weak, or if we are strong and our dua is weak, it may not have an effect. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us about Zakariya alayhis salaam and dua in Surah al-Anbiya, surah 21, ayah 90: Verily, they used to hasten to do good deeds, and they used to make dua to Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us. (Quran 21:90) You can imagine the condition of one making dua; a worshipper repenting from his sins, humiliated in front of Allah, in a state of fear, submitting himself to the will of Allah, earnestly desiring Allahs rewards, raising his hands, turning to Allah with the best of hopes from Him. Such a person makes dua keeping in mind the promise that Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala has given him, hopeful of achieving that promise as mentioned in surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60: And your Lord says: "Call on Me (Make dua to Me); I will (of a surety) respond to you" (Quran 40:60) Dua is a noble, spiritual form of worship which allows us to appreciate the majesty and eminence of al-Khaliq, The Creator. This is because the worshippers turns to his Lord at a time of need, after all other types of aid have been cut off, and all other sources have been despaired of. He turns to his Lord to obtain from Him contentment, peace and serenity, and he finds Beneficence which will never be found from other sources. And how can this not happen, when he is turning to

the Lord of all lords, and the King of all kings, the One Who is Self-Sufficient from all wants, and Who is Praised at all times? So with the noble status of this act of worship in mind, it becomes obligatory on every single Muslim, without exception, to become familiar with this great concept of dua. But there are many questions that come to mind that we need to understand clearly about dua. What is dua? What are its blessings and its excellence? What is the proper etiquette that one must follow while making dua? Why is someones dua responded to, and someone elses not? And how can one increase ones changes of getting ones dua accepted? And what are the factors that prevent ones dua from being accepted? Also, if everything is already predestined, then what is the purpose of making dua? With this, today I wanted to start our discourse by introducing this topic of dua to try and help us all, including myself, understand the power, the effect, and the method of dua InshaAllah. Dua means to call out, or to summon. As Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala says in Surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60: And call upon Me, for I will answer your prayers In the Quran, it can also mean worship, the seeking of aid, a request, a call, praise, speech, a question and others. I mentioned earlier that it is obligatory on every single Muslim to make dua. The evidence is in the same ayah from Surah Ghafir, ayah 60 because in it Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala is commanding us to ask Him and counted those who not ask Him among those who are too arrogant to worship Allah. From this it is understood that dua is among the acts of worship, and this meaning is reinforced by the prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam as reported by Numan ibn Bashir that he Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: Dua is worship

To emphasize the importance of dua, in another verse of the Quran, Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala calls dua the deen, the entire religion. Again in surah 40, Surah Ghafir, ayah 65, Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala says

what means: He is the Living One. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. So make dua to Him, making religion pure for Him (only). Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds! (Quran 40:65) This is connecting the entire concept of worship to dua. There is no other act of ibadah, worship, which has been equated to deen. This is very important because it helps us to realize that similar to other acts of ibadah such as salah, where we cannot simply make up the method in which we perform salah, similarly we need to restrict ourselves to the manner and etiquettes of making dua based on the texts of the Quran and Sunnah only. Dua also has a very strong relationship with our aqidah (creed) and tawhid. Dua is also one of the best ways that a person can increase his iman (faith) and appreciate Allahs Names and Attributes. It is a powerful reminder of mans inherent incapability and Allahs unlimited Powers. Dua increases a persons iman due to many factors. It makes evident that the fact that a person has absolutely no control over his destiny, nor does he have the power to benefit himself or avert any evil from him. It shows the neediness that a Muslim feels towards his Lord. It proves that the one making dua sincerely believes that Allah hears his dua and will respond to it. Such a person must also affirm Allahs Infinite Mercy, Beneficence and Generosity. And the more we increase in the realization of our poverty towards the Mercy of Allah, the more we will increase our iman. So it is two factors really that we can summarize from this; knowing our need of Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala in every matter, and knowing Allahs Perfect Nature. The one that makes dua also affirms his iman for Allah, for it shows that he believes in Allah, and that Allah, and only Allah, can listen and answer his prayers.

Dua also affirms tawhid in a person in all of its aspects. Tawhid is the Unification of Allah: 1. in His Existence and Lordship, called tawhid al-Rububiyyah 2. in His Perfect Essence and Attributes, called tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat 3. and in His right to be worshipped, called tawhid al-Uluhiyyah

When we make dua to Allah, we are acknowledging that Allah exists, and that He is the true Rub. The person is admitting that Allah is the Nourisher, Sustainer, Creator and Master of the entire creation, and all of this is the essence of tawhid al-Rububiyyah. Dua also necessitates that only Allah deserves to be worshipped, affirming tawhid al-Uluhiyyah, because only the One that has complete control over creation can respond to the call of the one in distress. And Dua also obligates that Allah has the most Perfect Names and Attributes affirming tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat, because only He can hear the whispering plea of the servant, no matter where the servant is, and only He can understand the situation that the servant is in. His knowledge is far more complete than the knowledge of the servant himself. With this, it because obvious that dua to any creation of Allah is considered shirk. Allah says in surah al-Jinn, surah 72, ayah 20, what means: Say (O Muhammad): I make dua only to my Lord (Allah alone), and I associate none as partners along with Him (Quran 72:20) To make dua to other than Allah is pure shirk as it is associating partners with Allah, which is the one sin that Allah will not forgive. How is it associating partners with Allah? Because by making dua to other than Allah, we are attributing characteristics that only our Creator, Allah has, to the created. So those that make dua to a saint, a peer, or a wali, or a rock, or an idol, or to the sun, or the moon, or the fire, or to Issa ibn Maryam alayhis salaam, or even to Muhammad Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam; this person believes that these objects or people can hear him, or has eternal life, or is capable of responding to his dua, and has knowledge of his situation and can see the state that he is in, and has

mercy upon him and has the power to grant him what he wishes. Yet, the perfection of all these attributes is only with Allah. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us clearly in surah al-Fatir, surah 35, ayah 14, what means: If you invoke or call upon them, they hear not your call, and even if they were to hear (you), they could not grant your (request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And non can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything). (Quran 35:14) Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala also tells us in surah al-Hajj, surah 22, ayah 12-13, what means: He calls besides Allah that which hurts him not nor profits him. That is a straying far away. He calls unto him whose harm is nearer than this profit: certainly, an evil patron and certainly an evil friend! (Quran 22:12-13) And Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tell us in surah al-Ahqaf, surah 46, ayah 5, what means: And who is more astray than one who makes a dua to other than Allah, who will not answer him until the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their duas to them? (Quran 46:5) And Ill end with this verse, even though there are more; Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala says in surah al-Muminun, ayah 117, what means: And whoever makes dua to (or worships) other than Allah, any other god, of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with His Lord. Surely, the disbelievers will not be successful. (Quran :117) We will continue from here next week InshaAllah. May Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala help us and guide us to act upon what has been said and to make dua only to Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala as he deserves and as we need. We ask Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to make us of those that enter Jannah without reckoning and to ease our situations in this dunya. Ameen.
