LGBT Community Outreach Fellow

Policy and Communications Department, DC Office of Human Rights BASIC FUNCTION


Conducts outreach and establishes relationships between the agency and LGBT community groups, advocacy organizations, and other entities, with a particular focus on transgender and gender nonconforming communities. The fellow will report to the Director of Policy and Communications.

COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION


The fellow is expected to work 15 hours per week, including participation in community events and outreach. The fellowship lasts three months, and a stipend of $750 per month will be provided. Please note night and weekend work will be required, given the nature of the work. The fellowship will begin late January or early February 2014.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
A minimum of two years of experience in community relations or advocacy related to LGBT issues. Experience working on transgender or gender non-conforming issues is required.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT
Strong verbal communication, interpersonal, and writing skills. Ability to conduct presentations for a variety of offices that include government, non-profit, and/or community groups. Familiarity with LGBT organizations and issues, and strong existing relationships with transgender and gender non-conforming communities required. Experience in building relationships between agencies or organizations and the communities they serve is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs is required.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Represents the agency and participates in community relations efforts, often in coordination with community groups and organizations Makes presentations and conducts community outreach activities targeted at LGBT populations for the purposes of reducing incidents of discrimination and increasing complaints of discrimination to the agency. Coordinates presentations/outreach activities with other government agencies and/or community organizations. Build and strengthen relationships between the agency and advocates and community members. Determines community concerns and develops solutions. Develops materials for target communities, to enhance understanding of agency functions and assist community members in the filing of complaints of discrimination Assist with other tasks as needed.
