Hydrology + Planting Selection Matrix

Hydrology Calculations: The concept for stormwater management in this design is to create an open system of water features that collects, distributes and treats the runoff from both the community building and the paved landscape. Runoff is collected from the community building where it is channeled into two water pools. These pools contain an overflow inlet that channels excess flow from a storm event into one of two designed rock swales, which are also integral design features on the site. After making its way into the lower portion of the site, The meadow , the suspended solids have been removed from the flow and the water is cleansed by lowland shrubs and grasses before leaving the site and heading downstream. The large aggregate in the swales slows down time of concentration, and mitigates and erosional potential from runoff on the site. Impervious Surface: Roof 1: 1366 sq ft ( .03 AC ) Roof 2: 1258 sq ft ( .03 AC ) Total Designed impervious surface on site: 4803 sq. ft ( .11 AC ) Triangle Pool Capacity: 342 cu ft @ 2 depth Rectangular Pool Capacity: 158 cu ft. @ 2 depth Design Storm : 100 year storm ( 9 in / rh in Washington Co) Q= CiA Roof + Pool: Q = .95 x 9 x .03 = .25 Cu . Ft. / Second = max discharge from rooftop. .25 cu/ ft per second reveals that the overflow structures and pipes must be sized to handle such a flow in order to circulate the stormwater from the pools and into the swales. The pools are large enough to handle all storm events on this site. Design Storm : 100 year storm ( 9 in / rh in Washington Co) Q= CiA Total Impervious Surface - Shallow Concentrated Flow L/60V 94/60(.95) = 164 (T) Q = CiA .95 x 9 x .11 = .94 cu. ft. / second = max discharge from site impervious surfaces The two design Swales must be able to split .94 cu ft./ second between them and also handle .25 cu ft / second from each of the water pools. Each swale then must have a channel capacity of roughly .75 cu ft/ second. Design Swales 5 Wide 3 - 5 % Slope Parabolic Shape Cross Sectional Area : A= 2/3 Td A = 2/3 (5) (9) 3.33 = A 1.49 (60) (.55) / .039 .4917/ .039 = 12.61 x 3.33 = 41 cubic feet per second at peak capacity. The design swales are more than large enough to handle a storm on this site.
