Standard: S1C2PO 3. Solve problems involving percentages, ratio and proportion, including tax,
discount, tips, and part/whole relationships.
Objective: Students will be able to analyze real world situation using percents, ratio, and proportion.

Ratio - used to compare two or more quantities

Expressing the ratio of men to women as "2 to 5" is expressing the ratio in words. There are two
other notations for this "5 to 2" ratio:

Odds Notation: 2 : 5

Fractional Notation: 2/5

Write the ratio of women to men below:

Examples:
A) In a probability experiment, Andrea had to pick out socks out of a drawer. She picked out red
socks 5 times and blue ones 11 times. What is the ratio of red socks to blue ones in this
experiment?

B) There are 13 oranges and 5 apples. What is the ratio of apples to oranges?

C) Peter is planting trees in his yard. He wants the ratio of pine trees to oak trees to be 5 to 2.
Peter wants to plant a total of 63 trees. How many pine trees should he plant?

Partner Problem Solving - Ratios

A) In ballet class, there are 21 girls for every 2 boys. Write the ratio of girls to boys in more than
one way.

B) Jaime wants to know how fast she can type, so she times herself as she types a paper. The
paper has 715 words in it, and Jaime types it in 11 minutes. What is her typing rate, in words per
minute?

C) In a probability experiment, Alex flipped a coin 107 times. The coin landed on heads 50 times.
What is the ratio of heads to tails in this experiment?

Proportion - when you have two ratios set to be equal to each other

Directions: Complete the following proportional tables.

Dollars 3.30

Pounds 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

$1.75 for a pound of flowers

Ratio =

Dollars 1.75

Pounds 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

$14.00 for 4 pounds of grapes

miles?

D) A radio station had 264 tickets to a concert. They gave away 5 times as many tickets to
listeners as to employees. How many tickets did they give away to employees?

Percent a ratio whose second term is 100. The word percent comes from the Latin phrase per
centum, which means per hundred. In mathematics, we use the symbol % for percent.

Directions: Shade in the boxes to represent the following percents and then identify the
corresponding decimals and fractions.

Let’s develop a rule for finding percents of a certain number!

A) Using what you just found out about 50% of 5, is there a way we could have found the answer
without shading in the squares first?

B) Is there a faster way to find 80% of 5?
