Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc Manufacturer : DRAEGER Model : MiniWarn Personal Gas Analyser Page 1 of 6 A new portable four-gas monitor With the introduction of the MiniWarn four-gas personal monitor, Drger Sicherheitstechnik GmbH is expanding the price-performance range of its multi-gas product family of detectors, which also includes MiniWarns bigger brother Multiwarn II, a five-gas portable monitor. MiniWarn was designed with ergonomics, versatility, and user- friendliness in mind. From the outset, the goal was to make MiniWarn an easy-to-use and versatile four-gas monitor. MEASUREMENT CHANNELS The MiniWarn is equipped with four measurement channels: One catalytic sensor used for the detection of flammable gases and vapours Three electrochemical DrgerSensors XS EC, which are used for the detection of oxygen in % by volume and toxic gases at ppm concentrations The user can install one original DrgerSensor Cat Ex, which can measure numerous flammable gases and vapours in ppm, % LEL, and % by volume concentration ranges. The MiniWarn is the first Drger multigas instrument to be equipped with the new Leak-Check ppm mode with which the MiniWarn can detect concentrations of as low as 50 ppm methane, even during diffusion operation without the pump running. DrgerSensor CatEx The DrgerSensor Cat Ex is actually two sensors in one housing heat of reaction and heat of conduction. This combination allows the user to unambiguously measure methane between 0 and 100 % by volume, increasing user safety in comparison with other catalytic sensors. A detailed listing of some of the many measurement possibilities for this sensor is given below in Table 1 below. Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc The Miniwarn additionally allows up to five different and independent gas or vapour calibrations of the Drger-Sensor Cat Ex. For instance, at a gas company, a user may want to measure methane in ppm, % LEL, and % by volume concentration ranges, depending on the circumstances. These three measurement possibilities could be set up beforehand and easily accessed as needed in the powerful but easy-to-use MiniWarn Flex Menu. A user in a petrochemical plant with several known hazards could have the MiniWarn pre-calibrated to all of them. The Miniwarn can then be switched from one calibration setting to the other as needed. This feature brings the user the advantage of having to buy fewer instruments and means costly recalibration can be avoided. Electrochemical DrgerSensors
The three electrochemical Drger-Sensor( ports are user-installable plug and play smart ports. More than 18 DrgerSensor XS EC and three PacSensors II are available for the measurement of over 40 gases and vapours. A detailed listing of the measurement possibilities is given in Table 2. All sensors from the new electrochemical DrgerSensors XS-R generation even feature a guarantee period of three years (H2S, O2 , CO). Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc HARDWARE CONFIGURATIONS AND AVAILABLE OPTIONS The MiniWarn measurement unit comes in two versions: basic model: equipped as standard with an IR interface and all typical instrument functions required for normal use extended model: includes all the same features as the basic model and is additionally equipped with advanced data logging features, which with the PC software GasVision enables the user to log and display gas measurements. The IR interface allows the user to download data to a PC, set device parameters and load new software versions without the need for cable hook-ups or plugs on the instrument. Figure 3: A good price-performance ratio: The PSII family of electrochemical sensors Attachable pump The MiniWarn product family features an easily-attachable external pump. This pump can draw a sample from up to 10 metres away. The user attaches the pump to the top of the instrument, activates the mechanical positive locking mechanism, which starts the pump automatically (the pump is powered by the instrument). The pump has a flow alarm to alert the user to incorrect measurements due to clogging or bending of the remote hose or probe. The pump may be used with conventional hose, float probes, and extendible metal probes, among others. Power supply There are three different types of battery packs available for the MiniWarn, including: NiMH rechargeable power pack for a run-time of up to 15 hours during diffusion operation Rechargeable NiCd power pack (10 hours run-time during diffusion operation) Alkaline power pack for 10-12 hours run-time , allowing the use of readily-available alkaline disposable batteries. MiniWarn alarms Clearly, the ultimate purpose of the MiniWarn is to warn the user of the presence of gas dangers. When there is an alarm, the user is supplied with three pieces of redundant information to ensure an adequate warning: Visually: the entire red sensor cap illuminates and is visible at a great distance and from all directions Audibly: a very loud acoustic alarm sounds (85 dbA, at 30 cm) In the display: the display illuminates and the measurement unit of the affected channel alternates between A1 or A2 depending on the severity of the alarm. Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc Additionally, all three alarm modes are coordinated with one another. In the case of an A1 alarm (first alarm threshold) the visual alarm, the audible alarm, and the display are all activated with the same single repeating tone/pattern. In the case of an A2 alarm (second alarm threshold), all of the above modes activate with the same repeating double tone/pattern. This means that audibly and visually the user can recognize the severity and nature of the gas danger unambiguously and quickly. Ergonomics In developing the MiniWarn, every detail was considered in order to make the device ergonomic and easy to use. The similarity of the MiniWarn to an electric razor is not coincidental. Like an electronic razor, the MiniWarn feels good and secure in the hand and works easily. The MiniWarn offers both easy access to the sensor cover to replace sensors and to the alkaline batteries (with quick-release quarter turn screws). Daily operation is also child's play with the MiniWarn. The MiniWarn uses the same easy-to-use three but-ton operation philosophy used by the Multiwarn II, Pac III, and microPac (no hidden button pads or templates): One push of the big button turns the miniwarn on, Push the two small buttons simultaneously for a few seconds and the miniwarn shuts off (this is for safety reasons to prevent the unit from being switched off accidentally). Instrument display The MiniWarn features a full alphanumeric graphical display which displays all four measurement channels simultaneously with concentration value, measurement unit, and symbols for the instrument status. The user can at all times discern the instrument configuration and battery status in the display (even when the instrument is turned off) by simply pushing the < > key. Software capabilities The MiniWarn offers a range of powerful software features: More than 20 different languages are available for the miniwarn All of the required hygiene capabilities such as TWA and STEL Peak holding Silent alarm modes Leak-detection capabilities Multiple ranges and gases for catalytic Drger-Sensors Most advanced functions can be activated or deactivated by the user thanks to the FLEXMEN software philosophy. The MiniWarn can thus be made as simple or advanced as the user requires. All of these features are operated via the simple three-button key pad and text-driven software (in the user's own language). Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc GasVision is the complete data logging and hygiene-management software with the following features for the MiniWarn: A Black Box overwrite or fixed capacity mode Up to 15,000 measurements may be logged allowing more than 64 hours of measurements to be recorded with four channels active Each measurement includes gas concentration, measurement location, user-id, and any relevant alarms that occurred A database management system to search and organize data logging files. Applications With its versatile measurement channels, the MiniWarn will meet the needs of everyday confined-space entry and personal monitoring measurements in a variety of demanding settings such as: Gas utilities and transportation. MiniWarn measures methane concentrations in % by volume, ppm and LEL %. The instrument can additionally be fitted with a sensor for monitoring odorants (without cross sensitivity to H2S) and a CO sensor (measurement range 0 to 10.000 ppm). Water supply and waste water removal Telecommunications Mining Petrochemicals industry Offshore industry Fire brigades and hazardous response THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MINIWARN AND THE MULTIWARN II The MiniWarn shares many similarities with its bigger brother Multiwarn II. Indeed, an operator familiar with MiniWarn or Multiwarn II would be comfortable operating the other instrument without significant re- training, a potential cost saving in settings where both instruments are in use. Nevertheless, there are important differences which position the MiniWarn as a middle-end instrument and the Multiwarn II as a high-end instrument. The foremost difference is the IR sensor in Multiwarn II, which makes it a five-gas measuring instrument. The MiniWarn is a four-gas measuring instrument and has no port for an infrared sensor. Many applications require the unique benefits of an infrared sensor. For example, the infrared sensor can measure most flammable gases and vapours with no oxygen present. Additionally, an IR sensor cannot be poisoned. In oil-refining applications for instance, large concentrations of H2S may be present which can destroy conventional catalytic detection technologies. Also, IR sensor technology is more sensitive to large organic molecules (such as nonane and in jet fuel) than catalytic technology. A second important point of differentiation is the pump in MiniWarn and Multiwarn II. The MiniWarn features an external pump which can draw a sample from up to 10 metres away. The Multiwarn II, on the other hand, features a more powerful internal pump which can draw a sample from up to 0 metres away, and can even draw against substantial negative pressures. Date :- 18 November 2002 K:\Fax Data Sheets\Draeger\MiniWarn Personal Gas Monitor.doc With its advanced IR sensor and very powerful internal pump, the Multiwarn II is a high-end confined- space-entry and personal monitoring tool. It is a must for advanced applications such as the inertization measurement of combustibles where no oxygen is present, measurement in large confined spaces where long-distance pumping is required, measurement in the presence of poisons, and ppm hygiene measurements of large volatile hydro-carbons. Approvals and important technical information The MiniWarn currently has the following approvals: For Europe, the instrument has an EC type examination certificate in accordance with the regulations of Directive 94/9/EC (CENELC Ex approval), and lists the protection classes eex iad IIC T4 /T6 and eex iad I for electronics, pump, sensors and power packs For the USA, the instrument is approved by UL for Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C and D. Approvals from other agencies are currently pending and expected soon.
