In memory of Paul, a friend to SWSA.
He is loved and missed.
Welcome to the 88th year of ski jumping in Salisbury!
In our small town, over the Jumpfest weekend there will
be some of the best jumpers that New England has to of-
fer. Over the three days of ski jumping, whether you attend
Letter from the President
the Friday Night Lights
and the Human Dog
Sled Race, Saturdays
Salisbury Invitational
or Sundays U.S. Eastern
Championships you
will be part of an annual
tradition of competition,
camaraderie and fun.
SWSA directors and
volunteers work year
after year to better both
the facilities and the
community. Jumpfest
Weekend, the Jane Lloyd
Lobster and Clambake,
SWSAs Annual Golf
Tournament, Brewski
Fest, and the SWSA
Ski and Skate n Swap, are all part of our calendar year.
Some events help us nancially some are helping others
in need and most benet the youth of the surrounding
area and beyond. I dont think I would be the only person
to ask themself, Why do I continue to put in the hours
and days? For some of course involvement has been a
family tradition and a club they grew up in. Others of us
became involved with SWSA because it is a unique venue
and sport with a long history here in town. Those folks
that were, and still are involved, were able very recently to
see what our hard work has done for past young skiers at
Satre Hill.
On December 29, for the rst time in many years, NBC
Sports televised the rst leg of Olympic tryouts for the
Sochi Games in Park City, Utah. Amongst the athletes
at the trials were many athletes who have competed in
Salisbury. Ski jumper and Nordic combined Bill Demong
is hoping to earn another gold medal. His early years were
spent here during the 2nd weekend in February. The ski
jumping names of Fairall, Frenette, Lamb, Alexander are
all familiar to us here in Salisbury. These ski jumpers are
all in the hunt for a trip to Sochi! Nina Lussi and Lindsey
Van are past competitors who jumped here as recently as
last year. Both young women are vying for their spot on
the rst ever U.S. Womens Olympic Ski Jumping team!
Watching athletes that you remember seeing here and
who will soon represent the U.S in the Olympics tends to
answer our question of Why. Salisbury has been part of
their journey to the Olympics. The hard work that many
of you have put in over the years has helped them jump on
a uniquely sized hill and helped prepare them for the next
step of competition. Whether it is your rst time to Satre
Hill or your 50th we have always said you may see future
Olympians. We have proven that to be true and this year
should be no exception!
We all know how important volunteers are to an orga-
nization such as this. Just as important are the advertisers
and sponsors of our multiple events and those who give
to our annual appeal. Your generosity does not go unno-
ticed and is greatly appreciated by all of us here at SWSA.
The support we receive is tremendous. The benets can
be seen here at our facility and within the school systems,
where we provide nancial assistance to the downhill and
cross-country ski programs. Thank you.
SWSA lost three long-time volunteers over this past
year. Stan Stubby Sherwood was a coach and a xture
here at Satre hill. Paul Brazee was a steward, a ski jumping
parent and an avid supporter. George Miner was one of a
group of founders of SWSA. Please take the time to read
our tributes to these unique individuals who helped this
club for many years.

Ice Carving Competition
The conditions were almost perfect for the 7th
Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held
last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps,
on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow
fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry
touch, and the lack of sunshine (ices mortal en-
emy) helped preserve the competitors 300-pound
ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened
the ice enough to make it difcult for the carvers
to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still,
the nished works were spectacular in both the
amateur and professional divisions.
In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-
sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-
tured third place with his Surng Penguins.
Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place
with her Lombardi Trophy and also won the
Peoples Choice Award. Howard Freeman from
East Hartford, Conn., won rst place honors with
his Lighthouse View sculpture.
The sculptures in the professional division
never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to
J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also
co-chairman of the competition) with his Flying
Geese. Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-
sistent top-three nisher, took third place with Bal-
ancing Pixie. Thor was the title of the sculpture

As you walk the dirt road toward Satre Hill, the rst
indications that something is happening are the sounds.
Reverberating off the trees and hills one hears skis slap-
ping the landing hill, cowbells ringing and the amplied
The Voice of SWSA
voice of the announcer. That voice, The Voice of SWSA,
belongs to Dale Jones, who has been entertaining and
informing the ski jump crowds at Jumpfest for the past 25
years.
From 1988 to 1994, Dale shared the microphone with
colleague and friend Marshall Miles. Both were radio
personalities at WKZE. It was at Satre Hill that they at-
tempted their rst remote live radio broadcast. It was a
big risk, Dale remembers. The hardware was crude (there
were no internet connections at the time.), We used the
telephone lines to connect with the station.
Since 1994, Dale has been announcing at Jumpfest as
a volunteer. His stream-of-consciousness monologues
have been honed by a 32-year on-air radio career. And his
knowledge of ski jumping is informed by his own early ski
jumping experiences at Satre Hill. I jumped back in the
early 70s, Dale said. I only jumped on the little hills. I
wish I had started jumping earlier. By the time I was a ju-
nior in high school, I was more interested in other things.
So why does Dale give up an entire three day weekend
for SWSA every year?
Its what I can do. There are people here who know
how to make snow. There are people who know how to
cook or do other things. This is what I can do. Its a way to
give back.
Dale Jones is a morning radio host and program director
at WZBG fm 97.3 in Litcheld.

By Larry Stone with assistance from George Kiefer
This years program is dedicated to the memory of
Stanley Sherwood, Jr.
Stub, as he was known, was a member of the fa-
mous Flying Sherwood brothers who jumped and helped
organize ski jumping in Salisbury. There were 5 brothers
in all including George, Stubby, Roy, his twin brother Billy,
and Frank Butch. Roy and Butch are the lone surviving
Sherwood boys from that amazing group. The Sherwood
household headed up by C. Stanley Sr. and his wife Grace
(Andrews) was ski jumping central back in the early days
of Salisburys halcyon winter sports days.
There were other Salisbury youngsters who followed
the Sherwood boys into the ski jumping world like George
Miner, Harold Jones and Red Decker. They followed the
lead of the Satres, Hegges and Torrisens, who brought
their heritage of Nordic skiing with them when they
emigrated from Norway in the 1930s. We even had a
Salisbury-born cross-country Olympian in the 1930s,
embodied in the long lanky Richie Parsons who joined the
Norwegian boys in the 1932 and 1936 Olympics.
Although Roy became the most accomplished interna-
tional skier of the Sherwood clan, Stub was himself a good
jumper and avid skier. He became a xture on the Cata-
mount Ski School staff and he was one of the founding
members and spark plugs of the original Salisbury Winter
Sports Association, which replaced the old Salisbury Out-
ing Club after World War II. According to George Kiefer,
another of the early SWSA pioneers, Stanley was one of
the driving forces behind getting the club up and running.
After he stopped jumping himself, he helped coach many
Salisbury youngsters at the Satre Hill complex, includ-
ing myself. More importantly, he helped me recognize
Dedication: Stanley Stubby Sherwood
the responsibility to give back to the sport and SWSA in
particular.
I will never forget coming back to Salisbury for my
rst meet on the Big Hill, when I was skiing for Williams
College in the early 1960s. After pulling in to the hill with
my teammates, I ran up to see how preparations were
going on the tower. Stubby was running the operation of
getting the snow up onto the structure along with his crew
of workers and his own equipment. It did not take very
long until a shovel was in my hand and without directly
putting a guilt trip on me, Stub led me to understand the
enormity of this task and the way this communal effort
took shape through the work of many people. Although I
was still a starry-eyed competitor, it was then I really saw
the responsibility that was to become a part of my life.
Stub, even after he was no longer a jumper, loved the
sport and the scene of the ski jumping world. Probably
more than anyone else, he understood that we had an obli-
gation to keep this way of life going in any way we could.
His untold days and nights of work echo down through
the years and helped inspire the George Kiefers and Victor
Clarkes to pick up the baton, in this case a shovel, to keep
the SWSA legacy rolling.
Thanks, Stub, for all your efforts and for helping some
of us make ski jumping a big part of our lives, even after
we were no longer jumping. Heres to you, C. Stanley Jr.,
and to your wife Kathy for sharing you with us over the
years.

Marianne Fairall was full of life, with tremen-
dous ability and drive, a positive attitude and a
beautiful smile. Whatever interests her children
pursued, Marianne was quick to supply both the
talent and the energy to support them. Her son
Nicholas followed his sister Beth into ski jump-
ing and Marianne followed too, organizing trips
and raising funds. She almost single-handedly
transformed Eastern Ski Jumping from an or-
ganization with lots of good ideas but no way to
fund them to a non-prot corporation with the
nancial means to support modest purchases or
projects and to assist developing athletes with the
ever increasing costs of travel and training.
A few years ago, Marianne was diagnosed with
a rare form of brain cancer. As she battled the dis-
ease, through three bouts of brain surgery, Mari-
anne bravely continued her work for ski jumping.
She never quit, and she never lost her smile.
For several seasons, Marianne followed the
Eastern U.S. ski jumping circuit as Nicholas grew
from a junior jumper to a top competitor. (Nick
recently placed 23rd in a World Cup Ski Fly-
ing event in Kulm, Austria, with a jump of 170
meters!) Always active and energetic, Marianne
would circulate in the crowd at Satre Hill in Salis-
bury, and at other jumping venues, ashing her
beautiful smile as she sold little cow-bells to raise
funds for Eastern Ski Jumping. She often missed
the Saturday competition in Salisbury as she pre-
pared a room in the White Hart Inn for another
fundraiser, the annual silent auction.
On August 10, 2008, Marianne nally suc-
cumbed to her illness -- at home, surrounded
by her family. Mariannes son Nicholas made a
simple request about attire for her service ... we
would appreciate if people wore light colors to the
funeral because I know my mom would not like
it if she saw a bunch of people mourning over her
and making a big fuss about it. (Thats just the
way my mom is).
Nick led the way in cheerful attire with a pink
sport coat, while his father Martin wore a sport
jacket in a light hue of purple. Marianne will be
greatly missed.
As we recall her radiant smile and her bound-
less energy on behalf of Eastern Ski Jumping, we
dedicate the 2009 Salisbury Winter Sports Asso-
ciation Ski Jump Program to Marianne Fairall.

Ice Carving Competition
The conditions were almost perfect for the 7th
Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held
last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps,
on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow
fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry
touch, and the lack of sunshine (ices mortal en-
emy) helped preserve the competitors 300-pound
ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened
the ice enough to make it difcult for the carvers
to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still,
the nished works were spectacular in both the
amateur and professional divisions.
In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-
sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-
tured third place with his Surng Penguins.
Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place
with her Lombardi Trophy and also won the
Peoples Choice Award. Howard Freeman from
East Hartford, Conn., won rst place honors with
his Lighthouse View sculpture.
The sculptures in the professional division
never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to
J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also
co-chairman of the competition) with his Flying
Geese. Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-
sistent top-three nisher, took third place with Bal-
ancing Pixie. Thor was the title of the sculpture
by second-place winner
Richard Daley from Mas-
tic Beach, N.Y. And Chad
Gasiorek from Shohola,
Pa., won rst place with
Fighting Eagles.
The annual ice carv-
ing competition is made

sor Klemm Real Estate,

George Miner
By Willie Hallihan
George Miner, a ski jumper, founding member of Salis-
bury Winter Sports Association, great friend and SWSA
supporter passed away March 3rd at age 81.
He was a Korean War veteran, avid outdoorsman, pilot
and even modeled professionally.
George started ski jumping, as many youngsters of the
day, on private, back yard jumps that the kids fashioned
themselves. He later jumped competitively not only in
Salisbury, but also Bear Mt., Lake Placid, Brattleboro, VT,
Dartmouth, NH and Quebec, Canada.
After World War II, George and fellow visionaries
Rodney Aller, Cope Robinson, Carl Isaakson, Graham
Thompson, Stubby Sherwood, Rees Harris and Jack Fisher
formed the Salisbury Winter Sports Association, build-
ing the foundation for what the organization has become
today.
We at SWSA are grateful to George and his fellow
founders for their effort and dedication. George remained
a SWSA Director, helping to guide us for many years.
George leaves his children Gail and David.

Andrew Andy Tabak Jr.
By Willie Hallihan
SWSAs ice carving competition lost a great friend this
past year. Andrew
Tabak Jr., Andy
to us, passed away
May 22, 2013 at
age 93. His long
productive life was
no doubt due to
his passion for his
culinary profession
and his causes,
which, lucky for
us, included ice
carving.
As our head
judge, it was Andy
who brought order
to Jumpfests an-
nual competition.
He would begin in September with a phone call to see
if we had begun preparations and give gentle admoni-
tions when we hadnt. He was kind but unrelenting as he
instructed edgling judges on just how to assess each carv-
ing. He brought the same enthusi-
asm to Salisbury that he no doubt
delivered to teaching high school
kids to cook and his hospital vol-
unteerism.
Andy cast an unmistakable
prole with his long coat and at-
top hat, moving amongst the ice
sculptures judging and admiring
them. It seemed like he would be
with us forever.
We will miss him. Like the very
best ice sculpture, he was gone too
soon, but well long remember
him.
Paul Brazee
By Willie Hallihan
Paul Brazee left us suddenly this year on July 30th
at the age of 73. He was an
Air Force veteran, artist,
hunter, gardener and lover of
the outdoors, especially the
woodlands of Mt Riga. He was
a true, proud Raggie. And
fortunately for SWSA, he was
a long-time volunteer Steward
every Jumpfest weekend.
Paul epitomized the large
core of volunteers who just
show up each year, take their positions and do their work.
We hope Paul knew how much we needed and appreciated
his help.
Long-time ski jumping ofcial Mark Lavasseur wrote
of Paul, He was a sweet mangreat sense of humor and a
great laugh. Just a good soul.
Paul is survived by his children Marie, Thomas, Cath-
erine, James and Dennis.

By Carey D. Fiertz
I really like Spencer Knickerbocker, the winner in
Salisbury in 2010. Actually, I barely know him. We do not
have a lot of time to chat during competitions. However, I
do like him.
As the starter at the top of the jump, my role is to read
out the bib number and name of each jumper as they
prepare to take off down the in-run. The judges can then
properly score the jumpers, as they know who is hurtling
down the hill.
Over the course of Jumpfest Weekend, I spend 8-10
hours on the top of the jump. While I greatly appreciate
the incredible generosity of the community for helping
SWSA rebuild the tower in 2010, the budget apparently
did not allow for a heated starters box. (I have comment-
ed in previous articles about the lack of an elevator to get
menever mind the jumpersup the tower.)
It is hardly news that Salisbury can be pretty chilly
in February. The tower is about 80 feet off the ground,
making it one of the highest points in town. That gentle
breeze that we all love in summer becomes a nightmare in
View from the Top
February.
Now, Im a professional ski instructor and a former
winter mountaineer of sorts. The cold is something I
know well. However, temperatures can be a challenge
when I am on top of that tower trying to read, somewhat
coherently, a name and bib number.
Thats where Spencer comes in. There is nothing better
to thaw the jaw than wrapping your tongue around S-P-
E-N-C-E-R K-N-I-C-K-E-R-B-O-C-K-E-R. What a guy.
What a name!
Unfortunately for me, but not for him, Spencer has
moved to Steamboat Springs to train for the US Nordic
Combined team. It is quite possible he will be in Sochi this
year and not Salisbury. Ill miss him for sure. Sorry, M-I-
L-E-S L-U-S-S-I, the winner last year, just doesnt do it
for me. Nothing personal, Miles, but your name does not
keep my jaw loose.
Seeing familiar names like Spencers on the Olympic
roster puts Salisbury in perspective. Every ski jumper of
note from the East for over 80 years has competed here.
That our little community has such an impact is quite
remarkable. Add to that list our own native Olympians,

This is a weekend to show off your survival skills as
Northeastern Warriors, not your passion for fashion.
Jumpfest can be lled with February sunshine but the
uctuating climate in this corner of Connecticut can be
less than a thrill if you catch a chill. Here are some tips to
keeping your ngers and toes toasty:
The bonre crackles all day but it is best not to stagger
through the crowd in your stiletto high-heeled shoes.
You will be standing on snow. A eece coat or jacket
that repels water, a wool sweater, your warmest boots,
comfortable socks, and a layer of sweat-wicking long un-
derwear, are recommended options for staying warm all
day. Forget the velvet cape and the frilly fringe. Make sure
your accessories include hats, scarves, and mittens.
Did you forget something? Our local sport-savvy
Peter Becks Store will be on site selling hand-warmers,
hats, gloves, scarves and the new line of Salisbury Winter
Sport Association Apparel! A portion of every purchase
will be contributed to SWSA programs for kids. A larger
selection of cozy comfort clothing will be available a few
meters away at the store, 19 Main St, Salisbury, CT, 06068.
Phone: (860) 596-4217. www.peterbecks.com.
Parking is free but the short walk to the event is
usually over solid snow pack. Light and simple slip on
traction devices (like Yak Trax, Grip Lites or Ice Trekkers)
make it easy to stay grounded.
The bleacher space is lled with friendly faces but
sometimes very crowded. A light lawn chair or camping
stool is a great way to settle in and judge the jumpers.
Cowbells traditionally serve as the encouraging
background sound for every leaping competitor. You can
purchase one ahead of time but they are also available on
site in fun bright colors to match your mood. Each one
you purchase helps support the entire eastern ski jump-
ing division.
At the base of the jumps a traditional ski hut trans-
forms into a snack shack for beverages and warm meals.
To observe the jumpers soaring overhead sunglasses
or goggles are recommended.
Snow reects the suns ultraviolet rays. Sunscreen is as
important on the snow as it is in the sand.
Pets are like family, but it is best for everyone involved
to leave them at home.
Shake hands with future Olympians but be mindful to
stay behind the bails of hay that serve as boundaries for
the Jumpers on the outrun.
Please check www.jumpfest.org for weather delays or
cancellations. Our snowmaking capacity is top notch but
high winds or rain might altar the plan.

On Dasher, on Dancer, on Billy, on Bobby! Go Suzy,
go Sally, now turn up the alley! Have you had a tears-to-
your-eyes, doubled-over-at-the-waist belly laugh yet this
winter? Head to the Human Dogsled Races on Friday
night, February 7, right after the Target jumping!
Teams of six people compete in the funniest event of
the season. Five team members pull a sixth through deep,
loose piles of snow. The sixth man, or woman, is sitting
atop a sled made of anything from a plastic sled, sawed-off
canoe, or replica re truck mounted on two skis. Team
uniforms run the gamut: pro-like hockey jerseys, matching
bathmats worn as armor under horned helmets, home-
made t-shirts decorated by Sharpie marker enthusiasts, the
list goes on. Then there is the face paint. On Friday night
you can see a Stinger, a bear, a Viking, and if you are really
quiet, maybe even a W.O.K. Husky.
Runners are connected to the sled by any number of
ingenious materials including knotted rope going through
gloved hands and elaborate harnesses threaded with
colorful straps. Last year, one team had a yoke-and-rein
device made from small tree branches and leather dog
leashes. During the race spectators watch the competitors
run, slide, and crawl towards the uphill nish. When one
team member falls, everyone falls. Or perhaps a sled may
detach as the haulers mush forward up the hill. The team
then returns to pick up their fallen comrade. However,
throughout the race, one mostly hears laughter, cheering
and cowbells.
The races are run in heats matching two teams against
one another. The teams line up side-by-side at the top of
the shallow hill of snow that serves as the outrun of the
ski jumps. The snow here is soft, to accommodate jump-
ers coming off the landing hill at great speeds who need
to slow and stop. Once local radio celebrity Dale Jones
calls On your mark, get set, GO through the P.A. system,
the sprint is on! Most races are neck-and-neck for the
rst third of the .5k distance. Halfway through the track
there is a hairpin turn. Teams navigate to the outside of
the track around orange safety cones. There is nothing
safe about it! Four teams out of ve will lose a runner or
their sled at the turn. The real work begins on this nal
uphill leg of the race. Though it looks like a small grade,
the uphill to the nish has been the demise of many teams.
Speeds here slow, as the crowd grows louder. Once the
whole team, including the sled, is over the line, a winner
is declared. Runners collapse into the snow, exhausted,
breathless and laughing--awaiting their trophy and the
right to be called Human Dogsled Champions!
Laugh Your Chill Off!

From the Salisbury Board of Selectmen
On behalf of the Town of Salisbury, wel-
come to the 88th annual Eastern National
Ski Jumping Championship. Sponsored by
the Salisbury Winter Sports Association
(SWSA), this unique event nds its roots in
several of our towns ancestors who intro-
duced us to Nordic winter sports competi-
tion in the 1920s. The program provides
winter recreational activities for people of
all ages, and over the years the Satre Hill
has attracted many National and Olympic
championship jumpers, including several
from Salisbury.
The SWSA program is run entirely by
volunteers, who donate long hours to ensure a high qual-
ity, competitive and safe event. The weekend activities for
the Jumpfest weekend include an ice carving demonstra-
tion, several jumping events, art shows, a chili cook-off,
a Sunday pancake breakfast sponsored by our Salisbury
Volunteer Ambulance Squad, and the always popular
Snow Ball held on Saturday night.
Throughout the year, SWSA holds several fund raising
events to benet local charities during the summer and
fall. SWSA believes that there should always be a chance
for any child to get outside and enjoy the winter, and over
the years it has sponsored a ski swap, cross-country and
downhill skiing, and jumping on two smaller hills that are
situated to the left of the championship jump. SWSA is an
important part of a larger recreational program in Salis-
bury that includes swimming, skating, tennis, baseball,
soccer, paddle tennis and sailing.
We hope that you enjoy your visit to Salisbury, and
we appreciate your support of the important SWSA ski
jumps. Please visit us on-line at www.salisburyct.us, and
we hope to see you on a return trip during the spring,
summer and fall.
Thank you.

Ice Carving Competition
The conditions were almost perfect for the 7th
Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held
last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps,
on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow
fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry
touch, and the lack of sunshine (ices mortal en-
emy) helped preserve the competitors 300-pound
ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened
the ice enough to make it difcult for the carvers
to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still,
the nished works were spectacular in both the
amateur and professional divisions.
In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-
sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-
tured third place with his Surng Penguins.
Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place
with her Lombardi Trophy and also won the
Peoples Choice Award. Howard Freeman from
East Hartford, Conn., won rst place honors with
his Lighthouse View sculpture.
The sculptures in the professional division
never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to
J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also
co-chairman of the competition) with his Flying
Geese. Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-
sistent top-three nisher, took third place with Bal-
ancing Pixie. Thor was the title of the sculpture
by second-place winner
Richard Daley from Mas-
tic Beach, N.Y. And Chad
Gasiorek from Shohola,
Pa., won rst place with
Fighting Eagles.
The annual ice carv-
ing competition is made
possible through the
generosity of lead spon-
sor Klemm Real Estate,
as well as the White Hart
Inn, the Salisbury Winter
Sports Association and

Letter from the President
This years event will span three days that we hope
will inspire you and your family to come visit our
venue and our surrounding area. Friday night will
kick off our weekend festivities. The evening will start
with a chili cook off with offerings from area restau-
rants. There will be an ice carving demonstration
followed by target jumping by our athleteswith a
winner-take-all prize of $500 donated for the second
year by Churchill Brothers, LLC. The bonres will be
lit and the cow bells will be ringing!
A junior tournament returns on Saturday morn-
ing after a three-year absence. The eld will include
several local jumpers culled from a Christmas week
clinic at Satre Hill that boasted 22 youngsters from
area towns.
Jump practice that will be followed by The Salis-
bury Invitational meet in the afternoon. An ice carv-
ing competition on the green at The White Hart Inn
will feature artists from the tri-state area and beyond.
The evening will again bring everyone to the White
Hart for a silent auction to benet the Eastern Ski
Jumping Association, followed by a live band playing
until midnight.
Sunday concludes our weekend festivities with
practice jumping in the morning followed by the
Eastern Ski Jumping Championships in the after-
noon. Morning, noon or night there will be some-
thing for everyone on this weekend in town.
As you read through this years program you
will realize that there are always projects, events and
causes that we at SWSA sponsor and or participate
in. As with many other organizations in town, we try
to help where we can. Many current directors grew
up in our club and enjoy giving back to the commu-
nity as a way of thanking past volunteers and direc-
tors. We all work hard to preserve this unique local
tradition, one of the few truly old school venues
and clubs in the area. And our efforts have been
rewarded by the support of citizens and organizations
throughout our community. For the second year in
a row, Fred Stevenson and Lloyd Wallingford of the
Murphy Open golf tournament chose SWSA as the
beneciary in the amount of $4,700. We all greatly
appreciate their generosity and are committed to
supporting this event, which helps so many different
non-prots year after year.
After talking with Fred and Lloyd, SWSA directors
decided to sponsor an annual tournament of its own!
Everyone agreed that an event that did not require
shovels, rakes, chainsaws, tractors, etc. would be very
different for our club. We thought this could actually
be fun! and it proved to be. Trish and John MacAr-
thur and their entire family became our hosts. Under-
mountain Golf was the place, and a great day of golf
was had by all! Our sincere thanks to the MacArthurs
and their family for making the day such a success!
Our advertisers in this program are also a very
important part of the clubs on going commitment to
winter sports in the area. Year after year and in good
times and bad, these individuals and businesses help
our cause in any way they can. We all at SWSA say
Thank you. This program provides the funds to
maintain our facility and equipment and to keep this
tradition alive. As we approach the task of replacing
our jump tower, a positive relationship with the com-
munity becomes ever more important.
The program is also a way of showing our ap-
preciation to a signicant contributor to the SWSA
tradition who passed away this year. Marianne Fairall
was known by everyone in SWSA and in the entire
ski jumping community. Though many of you may
not have met her personally, you may know her by
reputation: she was widely known at the Salisbury
Jumps as the Cow-bell Lady. Whether it was your
rst year at our event or your 10th, there was Mari-
anne. She would walk through the crowd with a big
smile and a much bigger heart selling cow bells. The
money she raised was then used to support trips,
equipment and anything else Eastern jumpers needed
in their travels here and abroad. Aside from sell-
ing bells at all the events she also came up with the
silent auction idea at Salisbury and two other venues.
She would get here on Friday night with a load of
kids from New Hampshire, get them settled in for
a weekend of jumping, be here rst thing both days
selling bells and then somehow got to the White Hart
to set up the auction, head off to our awards dinner
and be back in time to start and run the auction.(The
silent auction in Salisbury is actually the largest fund
raising event in Eastern ski jumping!) Salisbury was
one of Mariannes favorite events every year and it
will be difcult to imagine our weekend without her
enthusiasm and dedication for all kids involved with
jumping. Please join us Saturday night and visit the
auction at the White Hart. This would be a wonderful
way of paying tribute to one of the most dedicated
women that this sport has ever had!

decided to sponsor an annual tournament of its own!

When you buy a ticket to the championships, here is where your money goes
Running the annual U.S. Eastern and Salisbury
Invitational Ski Jumping Championships and maintaining
the jumps are major undertakings that consume not only
thousands of volunteer hours but also a signicant portion
of the Salisbury Winter Ski Association budget. Less well
known,
however, are a number of other programs that SWSA
sponsors. If you bought advertising in the Jump Program,
purchased a ticket to the event or became a member of the
organization, here are some of the places your money is
going:
* Maintenance of the Bittersweet Downhill area and
Selleck Hill Cross-country trails.
* Support of junior jumpers. SWSA provides
equipment, sends juniors to summer training camps, and
helps nance travel and participation in competitions
across the country.
* Support of local school children interested in skiing.
SWSA funds contributed to the Salisbury Central
School ski program at Catamount help cover cost of
transportation, lessons, and equipment rental.
* Te annual Ski Swap, which benets residents selling
unneeded equipment. Donated gear, distributed through
the Salisbury Recreation Dept., encourages local children
to get into the sport.
* Support of jumpers throughout New England with
contributions to the New York State Ski Educational
Foundation, which provides transportation and other
support to jumpers in the region.

What is SWSA and what do we do?
What is SWSA?
Salisbury Winter Sports Association is a non-prot, all-
volunteer organization that is governed by a 20-member
board of directors. Membership and meetings are open to
everyone.
Satre Hill, SWSAs jumping venue, consists of 20, 30,
and 65-meter hills. It is located in Salisbury, Connecticut,
a picturesque New England village in the Berkshire Hills
about two hours from New York City, one hour from
Hartford, and less than three hours from Boston.
In 1926, Norwegian immigrant John Satre jumped
off a local barn roof to demonstrate the beloved sport of
his native country. SWSA has been supporting jumping,
crosscountry and Alpine skiing, ever since.
In 2016, SWSA will host the U.S. Junior Nationals in
Jumping and Nordic Combined. This is the premier na-
tional event for jumpers and skiers aged 17 and younger.
It is a key steppingstone to international and Olympic
competitions.
What does SWSA do?
The Salisbury Winter Sports Associations main activity
is hosting the annual three-day Jumpfest Weekend, which
comprises the U.S. Eastern Championships and is the
nal selection event for the Eastern Junior National team.
SWSA has several other community activities:
SWSA teaches jumping to 20-30 boys and girls annu-
ally with the objective of developing them into serious
competitors and provides opportunities for training two
to three times a week during the season.
SWSA holds an annual Holiday Jump Camp for inter-
ested novices and offers training and equipment support.
SWSA provides nancial support for jumpers to attend
training camps and regional competitions.
SWSA raises money, primarily through the annual Ski
Swap in December, to support downhill and cross-country
ski programs at local elementary schools including North
Canaan, Salisbury, Falls Village and Webutuck, beneting
as many as 200 skiers with nancial aid and equipment
annually.
SWSA maintains cross-country ski trails on Selleck Hill
for the benet of members.

U.S. Woman Ski Jumper: Nina Lussi
By Nina Lussi
I gripped the sideboards. The fear of falling to my
demise from the side of the rickety, wooden tower was
more real than ever as I attempted to make my way up
the tower. This was not an easy feat. I had to balance
the abnormally long skis on my shoulder while trying
not to slip on the worn-down wooden slats. Luckily, I
knew how to ski jump so sending myself at high speed
down an ice track into the unknown was the least of
my worries.
Only three allowed at the top at a time, the starter
shouted down from the top.
Great, I remember thinking to my 11 year-old self.
This old thing might collapse at any time!
I didnt have the appreciation for the history or the
character of a jump like Salisburys. But now, look-
ing back, I am so glad that I got to jump on such an
historic structure. That being said, I am not about to
complain about having to jump a more modern, re-
vamped Salisbury. The new hill is an amazing addition
to the world of ski jumping. The fact that the entire
community came together to raise the funds for what
seemed like the impossible still amazes me.
Here I am, eight years after I took my rst jump in
Salisbury, competing internationally on the World Cup
circuit. This winter kicked off in Lillehammer, Norway,
and the two male representatives at this event are also
seasoned Salisbury veterans: Nick Fairall and Nick
Alexander. These guys were (and still are) mentors for
me. I grew up with these guys; they exposed me to the
world of teenage boys, they taught me how to properly
wax my skis, and knew how to get me to relax when
things werent going well.
This will be a huge season, not only for me, but
also for jumpers across the globe! The 2014 Winter
Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia will be the FIRST
time women will be allowed to compete on the highest
world stage. The path to the Olympics has not been an
easy one and rivals the plotline of the best TV dramas.
But here we are, on the eve of something magical, with
goose bumps running up and down our spines. Every
time the national anthem is played, a Sochi commer-
cial is on TV, we pick up our skis, or close our eyes at
the end of a long day--- it is impossible to extinguish
the excitement we feel at the prospect of jumping in
the Olympics. To be part of this team and group of
women who have worked tirelessly to train and com-
pete in this event for the rst time is remarkable.
My rst coach, Larry Stone, must have seen some-
thing in me that reminded him of the original Ameri-
can lady jumper: Lindsey Van. He showed me videos of
her, gave me a personally signed postcard of a young,
blonde, pink-nailed Lindsey, and I knew I wanted to be just
like her when I grew up. Imagine that we are now team-
mates working towards a common goal! Although Lindsey
doesnt have quite as many jumps in Salisbury as I have,
laughing, she recalled that it was quite an experience.
In Salisbury, everything comes full circle. You will have
people coming up to you, sharing stories about their past
experiences and it brings joy to their eyes watching us
youngsters huck ourselves. Proof of the generosity as-
sociated with Salisbury came in the form of a little brown
box that was delivered to my hotel in Lillehammer, Norway
on the eve of the opening World Cup of this season. I had
been in correspondence with Mike Harney regarding my
love for his "Hot Cinnamon Spice" tea from Harney and
Sons. He took the initiative, and in order to make my time
in Norway as enjoyable as possible, he arranged for a box

to be sent to my hotel in Lillehammer. I was ecstatic! I
rarely get mail, and to get a package full of my favorite tea
made me so happy, the ladies working at the front desk just
started laughing at me.
Mikes Note Having watched you jump at SWSA for
years, you feel like a hometown girl to us here in Salisbury.
Salisbury is always a place where I will feel forever
welcome, and I can only be thankful for the fact that I have
made somewhat of a lasting impression. I cant help smil-
ing at the thought of the extra large cow bell being rung in
the Byrd House to push the jumpers further down the
hill.
So there it is. Salisbury is a family. Once a part of it,
always a part of it! I could start naming names of the faces
I see year after year, working their butts off to get the hill
up and running, but I am sure I would leave someone out,
and that simply wouldn't be fair! All I can do is say Thank
You and hope that I will come back again someday and
send a few more jumps off Satre Hill.

Salisbury Winter Sports Association and the Winter Olympics
By Caroline Gilbert
The road to elite competition demands a balance of
sacrice, talent and dedication. Many athletes aspire to
compete on the world stage, but few make it to the highest
level. This February the world gathers in Sochi, Russia to
celebrate, cheer and enjoy the Winter Olympics. The same
weekend, Salisbury Winter Sports Association will host the
88th Annual Salisbury Ski Jumps and Jumpfest weekend.
Salisbury has a long tradition of winter sports enthu-
siasts and competition. Legend holds that Norwegian
immigrants of the area decided to show off their sport
of ski jumping by skiing off the roof a barn. In time the
Salisbury ski jump was built. The jump has been rebuilt
twice and now is a modern 70 K tower of steel that stands
just behind the town center.
Olympians, past and future, jump at Satre Hill during
the annual ski jumps, and the Salisbury jump is essential
for the eastern jumpers who wish to prepare for the next
level of competition. Each year eastern jumpers come
to test their skill and prepare. The Jumpfest weekend is a
qualier for the Eastern Ski Jumping and Nordic Com-
bined team, which is named following the SWSA competi-
tion. This team represents the east at the Junior Nationals.
Some of these jumpers will make it to the Olympics and
world competition. In 2011, Salisbury hosted the Junior
Nationals. This year, the Nordic Skiing Association of An-
chorage, Alaska will host the 2014 Junior Nationals.
As jumpers progress, they often aspire to compete at a
higher level and on larger hills. The 2014 US Ski Jumping
team includes multiple jumpers who have spent exciting
weekends at the Eastern Championships on Satre Hill in
Salisbury. Nordic combined athlete and Olympic medalist
Bill Demong, a native of Saranac Lake, NY, spent time as
a youth in Salisbury. National team members Nick Fairall,
Peter Frenette, Nick Alexander and Chris Lamb have own
in Salisbury. US women jumpers who have spent time
competing in Salisbury include Lindsey Van and Nina
Lussi. The Olympic Ski Jump Team for 2014 will include
jumpers who have competed at Satre Hill in Salisbury
along with other jumpers hailing from Steamboat Springs,
CO, Fox Grove, IL, and Park City, UT.
Jumpfest weekend is a winter tradition of a commu-
nity coming together to enjoy a unique venue and sport.
While having fun watching the competition, remember
the names! You may see them on the international stage
in the future. And while watching the Olympics on televi-
sion, imagine those jumpers, as they competed here in the
northwest corner as young aspiring athletes on the road to
world competition.

Ice Carving Competition
The conditions were almost perfect for the 7th
Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held
last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps,
on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow
fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry
touch, and the lack of sunshine (ices mortal en-
emy) helped preserve the competitors 300-pound
ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened
the ice enough to make it difcult for the carvers
to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still,
the nished works were spectacular in both the
amateur and professional divisions.
In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-
sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-
tured third place with his Surng Penguins.
Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place
with her Lombardi Trophy and also won the
Peoples Choice Award. Howard Freeman from
East Hartford, Conn., won rst place honors with
his Lighthouse View sculpture.
The sculptures in the professional division
never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to
J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also
co-chairman of the competition) with his Flying
Geese. Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-
sistent top-three nisher, took third place with Bal-
ancing Pixie. Thor was the title of the sculpture
by second-place winner
Richard Daley from Mas-
tic Beach, N.Y. And Chad
Gasiorek from Shohola,
Pa., won rst place with
Fighting Eagles.
The annual ice carv-
ing competition is made
possible through the
generosity of lead spon-
sor Klemm Real Estate,
as well as the White Hart
Inn, the Salisbury Winter
Sports Association and
Trimp Ice Art.

This would be a wonderful
way of paying tribute to one of the most dedicated
women that this sport has ever had!

preciation to a signicant contributor to the SWSA
tradition who passed away this year.

Ice Carving Competition
The conditions were almost perfect for the 7th
Annual Salisbury Ice Carving Competition held
last February 9th, the Saturday of the ski jumps,
on the green of the White Hart Inn. A light snow
fell throughout the day to add a visual wintry
touch, and the lack of sunshine (ices mortal en-
emy) helped preserve the competitors 300-pound
ice blocks. But the 34-degree temperature softened
the ice enough to make it difcult for the carvers
to fashion sharp details in their sculptures. Still,
the nished works were spectacular in both the
amateur and professional divisions.
In the increasingly competitive amateur divi-
sion, Justin Reich from Newington, Conn. cap-
tured third place with his Surng Penguins.
Hometown favorite Jean Saliter took second place
with her Lombardi Trophy and also won the
Peoples Choice Award. Howard Freeman from
East Hartford, Conn., won rst place honors with
his Lighthouse View sculpture.
The sculptures in the professional division
never cease to amaze. Fourth place honors went to
J.P. Hedbavney from Branchville, N.J. (J.P. is also
co-chairman of the competition) with his Flying
Geese. Gary Costa from Burlington, Conn., a con-
sistent top-three nisher, took third place with Bal-
ancing Pixie. Thor was the title of the sculpture
by second-place winner
Richard Daley from Mas-
tic Beach, N.Y. And Chad
Gasiorek from Shohola,
Pa., won rst place with
Fighting Eagles.
The annual ice carv-
ing competition is made

generosity of lead spon-

as well as the White Hart
