Ideally speaking, the b e s t d e f e n s e line would be a s e r i e s of units s e p a r a t e d by one s q u a r e (each unit a b l e to be attacked only f r o m two s q u a r e s ) and doubled by t e r r a i n f e a t u r e s with a unit behind e a c h f r o n t line unit (not on a mountain) in s u c h a position a s to block advance f u r t h e r than a defeated unit's f o r m e r square. The offensive h a s the distinct advantage in BLITZKRIEG due to the v a r i e t y of p o s s i b l e t a c t i c a l techniques. The use of B r e a k t h r o u g h A r t i l l e r y , R a n g e r , A i r b o r n e , and Air A s s a u l t Units along with T a c t i c a l a i r a t t a c k s t o b r e a k r i v e r l i n e s and Strategic a i r a t t a c k t o c u t r e t r e a t and achieve a u t o m a t i c elimination. Troops m a y be moved up a d j a c e n t to an enemy's p o s i tion ( s u c h a s a c i t y ) under S t r a t e g i c a i r a t t a c k without having to engage t h e units in the position, thus forcing t h e t r o o p s i n the position to fight a t a d v e r s e a d d s d u r i n g t h e i r turn. Strategy for Blitzkrieg

Knabe I1 I t i s evident t h a t the strategy* of BLITZKRIEG i s e s s e n t i a l l y dominated by the funnel n a t u r e of the t e r r a i n with BLUE a t the n a r r o w and RED a t the wide end. T h i s r e s u l t s in a n advantage f o r BLUE on defense with a c o r r e s p o n d ing disadvantage on offense a s he b e c o m e s s p r e a d thinner when advancing c l o s e r to RED'S home t e r r i t o r y finding few d e c i s i v e n a t u r a l s t r a t e g i c objectives. RED, o n the o t h e r hand, i s a t a n i m m e d i a t e disadvantage o n defense due to the wide f r o n t he i s defending, but h a s the advantage o n the a t t a c k a s he gains ground, finding s u c c e s s i v e d e c i s i v e n a t u r a l s t r a t e g i c objectives with p r o g r e s s i v e l y l e s s f r o n t to c o v e r . Both s i d e s thus have t h e i r own t a c t i c a l "slant1'. BLUE t e n d s t o have b e t t e r i n t e r i o r l i n e s , but h a s the disadvantage of c o n s t r i c t i o n of h i s supply l i n e s (only t h r e e o v e r l a n d through the n o r t h i s t h m u s ) which m a k e interdiction and i s o l a tion a c o n s t a n t d a n g e r . Although i n the final a n a l y s i s B L I T Z KRIEG r e d u c e s t o w a r f a r e of a t t r i t i o n , the f r o n t a l a s s a u l t is r a r e l y a d e c i s i v e t a c t i c i n t h i s g a m e , eventually giving s o m e d e c i s i o n only between noticeably unequal p l a y e r s . E a c h p l a y e r should s e e k t o obtain the c o m m i t m e n t of h i s e n e m y ' s f o r c e s and then a t t e m p t to strike broad, decisive, strategical blows taking advantage of t h a t c o m m i t ment. A p l a y e r should avoid f r i t t e r i n g away h i s a i r b o r n e and a i r c r a f t units i n non-decisive actions. S e a invasions a l s o should be u s e d with d i s c r e t i o n s i n c e the t h r e a t of invasion is often m o r e effective than the a c t u a l event. S e a T r a n s p o r t a s well a s A i r T r a n s p o r t when c o r r e c t l y taken advantage of c a n provide unpredictable m o v e m e n t and m a s s i n g . 'Short -tournament' Game

The a f a s t e r game, c o n t a i n s a l l the s t a n d a r d t o u r n a m e n t r u l e s with t h e s e exceptions:

1. All land a t t a c k s a r e r e s o l v e d by the basic r e s u l t s table. 2. A i r f o r c e u n i t s a r e not r e p l a c e able. 3. P a r a units (including a i r landing) a r e replaceable Y & to the extent of the available r e p l a c e m e n t c o u n t e r s , (15 f a c t o r s ) . T h e s e s a m e r e p l a c e m e n t c o u n t e r s m a y a l s o b e brought in on t h e i r own in addition to the s t a r t i n g units, thus bringing the total possible p a r a f a c t o r s u p to 33 f a c t o r s on the board, o r off the board, by the 9th turn. The l a r g e r and s m a l l e r p a r a units m a y be interchanged anytime, but once eliminated i n any m a n n e r , the unit i s completely removed from playthis r u l e allows m o r e p a r a units on the board a t one t i m e than under game r u l e s p r e s e n t l y , i t p u t s a definite l i m i t on such units o v e r a l l . I find that i n n o r m a l play, I will r e p l a c e p a r a units nearly every replacement turn over all o t h e r units due to t h e i r range. T h e s e r i e s of r i v e r l i n e s c a n r e a l l y slow t h e G e r m a n advance. E v e n if t h e G e r m a n p l a y e r c o m m i t s strongly. a n i r r e v o c a b l e c o m m i t t m e n t we m i g h t add, t h e R u s s i a n p l a y e r c a n bottle h i m u p f o r m a n y moons. Answer: Yes, however i f during the battle portion of the turn enemy Fighters reduce the odds below automatic victory conditions, then all of the Units that moved adjacent to or over the intended AV victims are eliminated.
