Universal Stampi uses NX and NX Mold Wizard to deliver complex automotive solutions within tight deadlines
Fully independent organization with in-house production Universal Stampi S.r.l., founded in 1966, specializes in the design and production of die-cast molds for aluminum, magnesium and zamak. The company also produces gravity die-casting and plastic injection

molds. The production site, based in Bagnolo Mella (Brescia, Italy), covers a 5,000 square meter area, of which 3,500 square meters is indoors. With flexibility, the capacity to adapt to ever-changing market requirements and continuous improvement in technological knowhow, Universal Stampi has progressively grown over the years and today employs 60 people.

...NX is extremely exible and enables us to work according to the methods, procedures and deadlines requested by the market.
Stefano Masieri Designer and Business Partner Universal Stampi

The key strength of the company is a fully independent organization that keeps the entire mold-and-die production process inhouse. This translates into significant cycle time reduction and high product quality. Services range from mold and die design and construction, through sampling and pre-series, up to the dimensional control of sample parts. To support this full-service strategy, Universal Stampi has created a small industrial group with different companies under the same roof: BMG focuses on casting operations while SQS specializes in quality control. Meeting very tight deadlines In the typical development process at Universal Stampi, the customer foundry submits an item to be molded, which can be more or less industrialized and production-ready. Stefano Masieri, designer and business partner, explains: If necessary, the product is industrialized by our engineers, and then we move on to

prepare the draft design for tooling, which is approved by the customer before the actual design stage. Unlike the process of some competitors and one once used by Universal Stampi itself, today mold construction starts in the design phase. Our key strength is represented by high process flexibility and the ability to deliver according to very tight deadlines, stresses Masieri. To achieve this, we work concurrently in design and manufacturing. This approach implies some risks, of course, but it is a distinct way to generate added value for our customers. Universal Stampi manufactures 125 molds annually highly complex tooling mostly addressed to the automotive industry in Europe, China and India. Mold models are submitted for different types of analysis and simulation using specific software, and then transferred to the factory, where 26 machining centers with advanced CAM software await.

Stefano Masieri Designer and Business Partner Universal Stampi

Using the most advanced software for molds and dies Design software plays a key role. We use a wide range of applications as our customers have different needs and require native files in different formats, Masieri says. About one and a half years ago, we employed a designer with specific expertise who recommended we introduce NX, which he had been using for a long time. The first advantage that Universal Stampi noted in Siemens PLM Softwares NX software is parameterization, which is very useful for making adjustments and modifications on the fly. A customer may ask to change the size of a die or boss, explains Masieri, and in such cases, parameterization offers huge benefits. Certainly, individual skills are also essential, but the software should support the engineer in his work. In this respect, NX is extremely flexible and enables us to work according to the methods, procedures and deadlines requested by the market. Universal Stampi licensed both NX and the NX Mold Wizard application. We selected NX because it is the most advanced software for molds and dies, says Masieri. With NX, we can manage the entire project in 3D with fully associative drawings,

leveraging the real capability to develop a part concurrently with the corresponding mold. Each modification to the part is propagated to the mold. This is very important for Universal Stampis varied development needs, be it starting from scratch to make a new mold or re-engineering an existing product, which is more often the case. Development cycle time reduced by 20-25 percent Diego Tavelli is the chief designer who brought his experience and success with NX to the company. The greatest benefit of NX is its huge flexibility, confirms Tavelli. With NX you can do virtually anything and you never end up in a blind alley. You always find a way around any issue, a solution to any problem, because the designer is not constrained to a rigid approach. Thats how we have been able to reduce our product development cycle time by 20 to 25 percent. Theres another big benefit. Using NX Mold Wizard, Tavelli has created customerspecific components libraries, where each item is linked to an Excel spreadsheet with the corresponding technical specifications and pictures. And everything is parametric, of course.

Thats how we have been able to reduce our product development cycle time by 20 to 25 percent.
