September 1, 2009

Dear parent/guardian,

The members of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated invite your daughter to apply for the Delta GEMS: Growing and Empowering
Myself Successfully program for the 2009-10 school year. Delta GEMS serves African-American
high school girls in grades 9 _ 12 living in the Twin Cities metro area. The curriculum for the
program focuses on growth in the areas of self-development, self-esteem, empowerment, future
goal planning, and career development.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a sisterhood of college-educated women committed to service. It

is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to establish and maintain a high standard
of morality and scholarship among minority men and women, while providing services and
programs to promote human welfare. Delta Sigma Theta is the largest predominantly black
women’s organization with over 250,000 women, and more than 900 chapters internationally.

Delta GEMS activities will be held on one Saturday each month from October to June, 10 a.m.
-2 p.m., at Washburn High School in South Minneapolis. There will also be field trips at locations
to be determined (you will receive advance notice of such activities). Transportation to all
activities must be provided for the participant by the parent/guardian.

Please complete the enclosed 2009-10 Delta GEMS application. After applications have been
reviewed, all selected applicants will be invited to interview to participate in Delta GEMS on
Saturday, Oct. 10. If your daughter is selected to be in Delta GEMS, acceptance letters will be
distributed thereafter and an orientation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31. Note: If your daughter
participated in Delta GEMS during the 2008-09 school year, she will need to re-apply. Her
application will be reviewed along with the other applicants.
