Presenting her breathtaking photographs alongside interviews with those who knew her best, this volume is the

created more than 10,000 negatives during her lifetime, only a few of them were ever seen by others. Shortly
after her death in 2009, the first group of her unseen photographs-gritty with humanity and filled with empathy
and beauty-were shown online. What followed was a firestorm of attention, catapulting Maier from previous

Edgar Miller and the Hand-Made Home

Chicago's Forgotten Renaissance Man
Richard Cahan, Michael Williams, Alexander Vertiko...

Summary
Embracing old-world skills in a technological age, Edgar Miller was Chicago's last Renaissance artist. He was a
fine painter, a master wood carver, and one of the nation's foremost stained glass designers. He could sculpt,
draw hunting portraits, and was considered a pioneer in the use of graphic art in modern advertising. His artistic
genius came together in four artistic studios he built on Chicago's north side in the 1920s and 1930s. He touched
almost every inch of the studios with daring and surprise. He took rustic brick, crude stone, salvaged tile, found
glass, steel, and wood, then "Edgarized" the homes with stained glass windows, frescos, murals, tile work, and
wood carving. This collection contains over 400 images of the homes, which remarkably remain intact today.

Diversey
MacKinlay Kantor

Summary
A story about love and death in Chicago during the age of prohibition, this novel was originally published in 1928
and out of print for nearly 50 years. Set in a boarding house on the north side of Chicago, the novel follows
Marry Javlyn, a newspaperman who has just arrived from Iowa; Jo Ruska, a switchboard operator; and Abe Wise,
a gangster on the lam. Marry and Jo fall in love, but when Marry is lured away by a glamorous newspaper culture
critic, he descends into a Gomorrah of speakeasies, patronage jobs, and dingy art studios. Despite family secrets
revealed, betrayed loyalties, and a violent climax, Marry still has a chance in the end for redemption. With an
original, rollicking plot and memorable characters, the story stands as an authentic and invaluable artifact of an
era long distorted beyond recognition by sensationalism and stereotype.

Nine Lives of a Black Panther

A Story of Survival
Wayne Pharr

Summary
In the early morning hours of December 8, 1969, hundreds of SWAT officers engaged in a violent battle with a
handful of Los Angeles-based members of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP). Five hours and 5,000
rounds of ammunition later, three SWAT team members and three Black Panthers lay wounded. For the Panthers
and the community that supported them, the shootout symbolized a victory, and a key reason for that victory
was the actions of a 19-year-old rank-and-file member of the BPP: Wayne Pharr. Nine Lives of a Black Panther
tells Pharr's riveting story of life in the Los Angeles branch of the BPP and gives a blow-by-blow account of how
it prepared for and survived the massive attack. He illuminates the history of one of the most dedicated,
dynamic, vilified, and targeted chapters of the BPP, filling in a missing piece of Black Panther history and, in the
process, creating an engaging and hard-to-put-down memoir about a time and place that holds tremendous
fascination for readers interested in African American militancy.

The Assassination of Fred Hampton

How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther
Jeffrey Haas

Summary
It's around 7:00 A.M. on December 4, 1969, and attorney Jeff Haas is in a police lockup in Chicago, interviewing
Fred Hampton's fiancée. She is describing how the police pulled her from the room as Fred lay unconscious on
their bed. She heard one officer say, "He's still alive." She then heard two shots. A second officer said, "He's
good and dead now." She looks at Jeff and asks, "What can you do?"
The Assassination of Fred Hampton is Haas's personal account of how he and People's Law Office partner Flint
Taylor pursued Hampton's assassins, ultimately prevailing over unlimited government resources and FBI
conspiracy. Not only a story of justice delivered, the book puts Hampton in a new light as a dynamic community
leader and an inspiration in the fight against injustice.

Lady Q
The Rise and Fall of a Latin Queen
Reymundo Sanchez, Sonia Rodriguez

Summary
This is a raw and powerful memoir not only of one woman's struggle to survive the streets but also of her ascent
to the top ranks of the new mafia, where the only people more dangerous than rival gangs were members of her
own. At age five Sonia Rodriguez's stepfather began to abuse her; at 10 she was molested by her uncle and
beaten by her mother when she told on him; and by 13 her home had become a hangout for the Latin Kings and
Queens who were friends with her older sister. Threatened by rival gang members at school, Sonia turned away
from her education and extracurricular activities in favor of a world of drugs and violence. The Latin Kings, one of
the largest and most notorious street gangs in America, became her refuge, but its violence cost her friends,
freedom, self-respect, and nearly her life. As a Latin Queen, she experienced the exhilarating highs and
unbelievable lows of gang life. From being shot at by her own gang and kicked out at age 18 with an infant

Once a King, Always a King

The Unmaking of a Latin King
Reymundo Sanchez

Summary
This riveting sequel to My Bloody Life traces Reymundo Sanchez's struggle to create a "normal" life outside the
Latin Kings, one of the nation's most notorious street gangs, and to move beyond his past. Sanchez illustrates
how the Latin King motto "once a king, always a king" rings true and details the difficulty and danger of leaving
that life behind. Filled with heart-pounding scenes of his backslide into drugs, sex, and violence, Once a King,
Always a King recounts how Sanchez wound up behind bars and provides an engrossing firsthand account of
how the Latin Kings are run from inside the prison system. Harrowing testaments to Sanchez's determination to
rebuild his life include his efforts to separate his family from gang life and his struggle to adapt to marriage and
the corporate world. Despite temptations, nightmares, regressions into violence, and his own internal demons,
Sanchez makes an uneasy peace with his new life. This raw, powerful, and brutally honest memoir traces the

Deadly Valentines
The Story of Capone's Henchman "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn and Louise Rolfe, His Blonde Alibi
Jeffrey Gusfield

Summary
Almost before the gunsmoke from the St. Valentine's Day Massacre cleared, Chicago police had a suspect: Jack
McGurn. They just couldn't find him. McGurn, whose real name was Vincent Gebardi, was Al Capone's chief
assassin, a baby-faced Sicilian immigrant and professional killer of professional killers. But two weeks after the
murders, police found McGurn and his paramour, Louise May Rolfe, holed up downtown at the Stevens Hotel.
Both claimed they were in bed on the morning of the famous shootings, a titillating alibi that grabbed the public's
attention and never let go.

Deadly Valentines tells one of the most outrageous stories of the 1920s, a twin biography of a couple who
defined the extremes and excesses of the Prohibition era in America. McGurn was a prizefighter, professional-

Family Secrets
The Case That Crippled the Chicago Mob
Jeff Coen

Summary
Even in Chicago, a city steeped in mob history and legend, the Family Secrets case was a true spectacle when it
made it to court in 2007. A top mob boss, a reputed consigliere, and other high-profile members of the Chicago
Outfit were accused in a total of eighteen gangland killings, revealing organized crime's ruthless grip on the city
throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
Painting a vivid picture of murder, courtroom drama, family loyalties and disloyalties, journalist Jeff Coen
accurately portrays the Chicago Outfit's cold-blooded--and sometimes incompetent--killers and their crimes in
the case that brought them down. In 1998 Frank Calabrese Jr. volunteered to wear a wire to gather evidence
against his father, a vicious loan shark who strangled most of his victims with a rope before slitting their throats
to ensure they were dead. Frank Jr. went after his uncle Nick as well, a calculating but sometimes bumbling hit
Chicago Review Press man who would become one of the highest-ranking turncoats in mob history, admitting he helped strangle, stab,

Speaking Out
A Congressman's Lifelong Fight Against Bigotry, Famine, and War
Paul Findley, Helen Thomas

Summary
In his twenty-two years as an Illinois congressman and in the years since he left office, Paul Findley has fought
to eradicate famine, end wars, and eliminate bigotry in U.S. foreign policy. This sweeping political memoir opens
with Findley's early days in rural Pittsfield, Illinois, and chronicles his service during six administrations in
Washington. His many accomplishments in Congress include authoring the Famine Prevention Act, coauthoring
the 1973 War Powers Resolution, leading agricultural trade missions to the Soviet Union and China, and strongly
opposing the Vietnam War. This autobiography is also a no-holds-barred critique of Israel's lobby and its toll on
the national interests of the United States. Few politicians are so openly critical of their government, and
Findley's opinions on what he believes to be disastrous foreign policy provide a unique behind-the-scenes
perspective on the shaping of these policies in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Believe It!
The Story of Chicago's World Champions
Jerome Holtzman

Summary
Eighty-eight years after their last World Series win, the Chicago White Sox made up for lost time by sweeping
the Houston Astros to become the 2005 world champions of baseball. With 99 regular-season wins, the Sox
brought the second-best record in baseball to the postseason. Only one loss to the Angels prevented a complete
sweep in every phase of their postseason play to win with an impressive 11-1 record. Believe It! celebrates the
White Sox's championship season, its players, its manager, and its rich history. This book features the writing of
Chicago Tribune columnists John Kass, Rick Morrissey, and Mike Downey, who provide a narrative of the season
and World Series win. There are exclusive interviews with key contributors-manager Ozzie Guillen, slugger Paul

Bob Vanderberg

Summary
A list of essential knowledge and experiences all fans of the Chicago White Sox must know and do in their
lifetime, this book covers the team's long history all the way through the 2013 season. Most White Sox fans
have taken in a game or two at U.S. Cellular Field, have seen highlights of a young Frank Thomas, and remember
the team's 2005 World Series championship. But only real fans remember which player once took his pants off
after sliding into first base, can name the opposing outfielder who was showered with beer during the 1959 World
Series, or remember who hit the most home runs onto the roof of old Comiskey Park. This is the ultimate

Your Game, My Way
Steve Stone

Summary
Few in Chicago sports history have been as beloved on both the North and South Sides of the baseball-crazy
city as Steve Stone-a privilege that made no small contribution to the incredible stories shared in this fun
baseball exploration led by the man himself. Part anecdote and part analysis, the book shares the unique slant of
the American League Cy Young Award-winning pitcher and fan-favorite broadcaster on the game that has been
his passion for nearly five decades. He starts by analyzing the game position by position; illustrating his points
with personal experiences and the players he has either played with or covered. What he hasn't seen, his
broadcast partner of 15 years, Harry Caray, probably had, and he shares plenty of funny stories about their
years together in the booth as well. Finally he takes a serious look at how the game has changed and what the
future holds for America's pastime.

The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness

Summary
The Chicago Cubs tradition is one built on spectacular losing streaks and even more spectacular collapses. Yet
despite all the losses and disappointments, an amazing thing happens every summer at the corner of Addison and
Sheffield: millions of fans flock to Wrigley Field and millions more fans across the country regularly tune in to

abandon isn't entirely clear-these people represent a remarkable aberration of human psychology, epitomizing the
spirit and experience of dedication to a desperate cause. And the whole time, they're oddly happy. The Cubs

to blame all your trouble on a scapegoat-which may or may not be an actual goat. The fully revised edition also

Sweet Lou
Lou Piniella: A Life in Baseball
Melissa Isaacson

Summary
From Rookie of the Year to two-time Manager of the Year, with three World Series rings in between, Lou Piniella's
story is as compelling as the man himself. From a boyhood in Tampa that shaped, in every way, the athlete and
person he would become; to his years with the Kansas City Royals, an experience that would teach him about
the business of baseball; to his wild years in New York that would give him his first two World Series rings and
thrust him into George Steinbrenner's infamous revolving door; his many varied experiences all set him on course
to finding his true calling. Sweet Lou brings the story of one of the most intriguing managers in the game to life,
relives history with those who were there, and probes the man himself: his great loves, his great losses, and his
greatest successes. Author Melissa Isaacson explores Piniella's background, his parents, his friends, and his roots
in Tampa that explain not only his hot-headedness but also reveal a very down-to-earth family man. Along the
Triumph Books way, she charts his ascension to become the beloved skipper of the Cubs, setting his sig...

Fergie
My Life from the Cubs to Cooperstown
Fergie Jenkins, Lew Freedman, Billy Williams

Summary
Jenkins' life story-from Chatham, Ontario, to Cooperstown-is compelling, and Fergie tells it himself in his own
unique and inimitable style. A tremendous all-around athlete who has always been proud of his roots and
representing his country during a lifetime in the game, Jenkins established a reputation as one of the greatest
pitchers of not only his era but of all time. A strikeout king who whiffed more than 3,000 batters, Jenkins earned
the trust of his managers as a pitcher who completed what he started. This is the story of a man who refused to
be leveled by sadness and disappointments away from the playing field. It is also the story of behind-the-scenes
good humor in clubhouses and what takes place on baseball teams as they live and play together for months at
a time, as only Fergie can tell it.

The Rise & Self-Destruction of the Greatest Football Team in History

The Chicago Bears and Super Bowl XX
John Mullin, John Madden

Summary
This book is the story of one of the greatest football teams in the history of the NFL: the '85 Bears. They were,
for a brief, magical moment, a band of eccentrics who went from nobodies to rock stars and cult figures-they
took America on a wild ride in the middle of one of the wildest times in history. The Rise and Self-Destruction of
the Greatest Football Team in History reveals all the stories from that year, like how Walter Payton ended up
hiding in a storage closet and why the team collapsed under the weight of its own greatness.

Da Coach
Irreverent Stories from His Players, Coaches, and Friends
Rich Wolfe

Summary
Capturing the tough, no-holds-barred stories told by Mike Ditka's drinking buddies, combative players, loyal
teammates, friends, and fans, this unique tell-all shows "Da Coach" through the eyes of the people closest to
him. Raucous and amusing, this biography proves that Ditka's no-nonsense attitude and give-'em-hell demeanor
on the playing field was certainly no act. Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, and Walt Garrison remember going shoulder
to shoulder on the gridiron with the monster of the midway himself. Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, and Thomas
"Hollywood" Henderson share incredible stories of Ditka's intense sideline strategizing, skirmishes, and scuffles.
Tom Landry, Dave McGinnis, and Bob Costas recount Ditka's early years as a renegade roughhouser, and his
incredible success as the man in charge of the World Champion Chicago Bears. Da Coach celebrates the life and
colorful times of a true sports original who has it all-guts, glory, and personality to spare.

Sayers
My Life and Times
Gale Sayers, Fred Mitchell, Dick Butkus

Summary
Four decades ago, Gale Sayers allowed his remarkable running ability on the football field to speak for him.
Today, Sayers has a powerful and poignant message to pass along not only to athletes but to everyone, and it's
a message straight from his heart. Sayers, who grew up in modest surroundings in Omaha, Neb., is the son of a
car polisher and mechanic. After fielding 75 college scholarship offers, he selected Kansas, where he became an
All-American halfback before being selected in the first round of the 1965 draft by the Bears. Later, he became
the youngest man ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, at age 34. A knee injury in 1968 cut short his
spectacular career, which included an NFL record 6-touchdown effort against the San Francisco 49ers. The
story of Sayers' friendship with former Bears teammate Brian Piccolo was immortalized in the 1971 made-for-TV
movie "Brian's Song," which starred James Caan as Piccolo and Billy Dee Williams as Sayers. The loss of Brian

Walter & Me
Standing in the Shadow of Sweetness
Eddie Payton, Paul T. Brown, Craig Wiley

Summary
Widely regarded as one of the best football players to ever tie on a pair of cleats, Walter Payton led a
fascinating and ultimately tragic life. Told in the voices of those who knew him best, this biography of the
Chicago Bears legendary running back tells the inspiring account of the reward of hard work and is an uplifting
testament to the power of the human spirit. It is a story of inspiration, redemption, and the deep passion two
brothers felt for the sport of football. More than a decade after the untimely death of Walter Payton, his older
brother recalls the moments they shared and the continuing sting of the loss of a legend. This glimpse into
Payton's life doesn't sugarcoat the issues or glorify the late superstar, but rather it addresses the subjects of
suicide, drug abuse, and infidelity head-on with intimate knowledge of the facts. In this candid take, Walter's
older brother discloses the true life of man simply known as "Sweetness."

100 Things Bulls Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die
Kent McDill

Summary
The premier reference for making Chicago Bulls fandom a lifestyle instead of just a sports preference, this
collection of essential team knowledge and Bulls-related activities distills the past 50 years of NBA basketball into
a fun checklist that will appeal to fans of any age. It's one thing to have been to the United Center and rooted
for Derrick Rose, to relish highlights of a young Michael Jordan, or even to know that all six championship teams
were led by Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Coach Phil Jackson. But it is a whole other level of fan commitment to
know who Benny the Bull is named after, which player once grabbed 37 rebounds in a single game, and how the
Bulls missed out on Magic Johnson in the draft. These facts and trivia-as well as important dates, player
nicknames, key jersey numbers through history, and even the best places to eat before or after a game-are
included in this resource that will enlighten new fans and initiate them into proper Bulls fandom, or remind die-
hard fans why theirs is the team to follow year after year.

Oddball Iowa
A Guide to Some Really Strange Places
Jerome Pohlen

Summary
This zany travel guide presents a more peculiar state than the Iowa Tourism Office might like out-of-towners to
imagine. Leaving out the traditional scenic trips to the Mississippi River bluffs and the Amana Colonies, this guide
will take the adventurous traveler to the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, the home of the "Lonely Goat
Herder" marionettes from The Sound of Music, and the world's largest Cheeto. To enhance the experience of this
unusual side of Iowa, the guide includes facts about numerous events in Iowa's history, such as Ozzy Osbourne's
infamous bat-biting incident and Jesse James's first moving-train robbery. Iowa is depicted as the birthplace of
the Roto-Rooter, the Delicious apple, the electronic computer, the reinforced concrete bridge, and the Eskimo
pie. The accompanying photographs and maps will direct travelers to other fun vacation spots and attractions,
including the butter sculptures at the Iowa State Fair, the annual National Skillet Throw, the Hobo Convention
Chicago Review Press and Museum, the Ice Cream Capital of the World, and the National Balloon Museum.

Gentlemen Bootleggers
The True Story of Templeton Rye, Prohibition, and a Small Town in Cahoots
Bryce T. Bauer

Summary
During Prohibition, while Al Capone was rising to worldwide prominence as Public Enemy Number One, the
townspeople of rural Templeton, Iowa-population just 418-were busy with a bootlegging empire of their own. Led
by Joe Irlbeck, the whip-smart and gregarious son of a Bavarian immigrant, the outfit of farmers, small
merchants, and even the church Monsignor worked together to create a whiskey so excellent it was ordered by
name: Templeton Rye. Gentlemen Bootleggers tells a never-before-told tale of ingenuity, bootstrapping, and
perseverance in one small town, showcasing a group of immigrants who embraced the American ideals of self-
reliance, dynamism, and democratic justice. It relies on previously classified Prohibition Bureau investigation files,
federal court case files, extensive newspaper archive research, and a recently disclosed interview with kingpin
Joe Irlbeck. Unlike other Prohibition-era tales of big-city gangsters, it provides an important reminder that
bootlegging wasn't only about glory and riches, but could be in the service of a higher goal: producing the best
whiskey...

Oddball Michigan
A Guide to 450 Really Strange Places
Jerome Pohlen

Summary
There's more to Michigan than beautiful forests, shuttered factories, and miles and miles of stunning shoreline.
Armed with this offbeat travel guide, you'll soon discover the strange underbelly of the Great Lakes State.
Michigan has monuments to fluoridation, snurfing, the designer of the Jefferson nickel, and the once-famous Mr.

World's Largest Lugnut, the Nun Doll Museum, Joe's Gizzard City, the Teenie-Weenie Pickle Barrel Cottage,
Howdy Doody, and Thomas Edison's last breath. The state also has its share of weird history-it's where Harry
Houdini perished on Halloween night in 1926, where skater Tanya Harding's posse whacked Nancy Kerrigan, and
where the Kellogg brothers invented popular breakfast cereals and less-popular yogurt enemas. Along with
humorous histories and witty observations, Oddball Michigan provides addresses, websites, hours, fees, and

Detroit
A Biography
Scott Martelle

Summary
Detroit was established as a French settlement three-quarters of a century before the founding of this nation. A
remote outpost built to protect trapping interests, it grew as agriculture expanded on the new frontier. Its
industry took a great leap forward with the completion of the Erie Canal, which opened up the Great Lakes to
the East Coast. Surrounded by untapped natural resources, Detroit turned iron from the Mesabi Range into
stoves and railcars, and eventually cars by the millions. This vibrant commercial hub attracted businessmen and
labor organizers, European immigrants and African Americans from the rural South. At its mid-20th-century
heyday, one in six American jobs were connected to the auto industry, its epicenter in Detroit. And then the
bottom fell out.

Peter Benjaminson

and her abuse of drugs. From tumultuous affairs, including one with R&B superstar Jackie Wilson, to a courageous
battle with throat cancer that climaxed in her gutsiest performance, this history draws upon years of interviews
with Wells's friends, lovers, and husband to tell the whole story of a woman whose songs crossed the color line
and whose voice captivated the Beatles.

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly: Detroit Tigers

Heart-Pounding, Jaw-Dropping, and Gut-Wrenching Moments from Detroit Tigers History
George Cantor, Willie Horton

Summary
Genuine fans take the best team moments with the less than great, and know that the games that are best
forgotten make the good moments truly shine. This monumental book of the Detroit Tigers documents all the
best moments and personalities in the history of the team, but also unmasks the regrettably awful and the
unflinchingly ugly. In entertaining-and unsparing-fashion, this book sparkles with Tigers highlights and lowlights,
from wonderful and wacky memories to the famous and infamous. Such moments include the impressive run to
the World Series in 2006 and the clutch hitting of Kirk Gibson in 1984, as well as the horrendous years when the
Tigers were in the cellar of their division and the particularly disastrous 2003 season. Whether providing fond
memories, goose bumps, or laughs, this portrait of the team is sure to appeal to the fan who has been through it
all.

If These Walls Could Talk: Detroit Tigers

Stories from the Detroit Tigers' Dugout, Locker Room, and Press Box
Mario Impemba, David Dombrowski

Summary
Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the personalities and events that have shaped the Detroit Tigers' recent
resurgence, readers will meet the players, coaches, and management and share in their moments of greatness,
grief, and quirkiness. Beginning in 2002, when author Mario Impemba arrived in the Tigers' broadcast booth and
when the team had consecutive 100-loss seasons, the book details how, in just three shorts years, team
president Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland led the Tigers to the American League pennant-a feat the
Tigers repeated in 2012. Impemba takes readers into the Comerica Park broadcast booth alongside the legendary
Ernie Harwell, onto the team plane during the team's two runs to the World Series, and into the clubhouse as
Miguel Cabrera closed in on the 2012 Triple Crown. He shares personal stories about several Tigers stars,
including Cabrera, Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder, Curtis Granderson, Ivan Rodriguez, Kenny Rogers, Magglio

My 60 Years in Baseball
Tom Keegan, Al Kaline

Summary
For many fans, their lifetime of experience with the Detroit Tigers ensured them that when their team roared, it

of the Detroit Tigers," the 2002 retirement of Harwell signaled the end of an era. This profile on the famed
broadcaster provides the lesser-known details on the background of a Detroit institution. Known for his voice and
talent for calling games, fans will be able to know the man himself and what brought him to-and kept him in-the

accumulated accompanying stories about) everyone from Babe Ruth to Ichiro Suzuki, many of which are shared

Summary
For more than a half century, as a superstar ballplayer, television broadcaster, and front office executive, Al
Kaline has personified the Detroit Tigers like no one else. In the Tigers' clubhouse of today, stars such as Miguel
Cabrera and Justin Verlander-neither of whom were even born when he played in the major leagues-respectfully

Hank Greenberg
The Story of My Life
Hank Greenberg, Ira Berkow

Summary
This autobiography of Hank Greenberg tells of one of the most dynamic and inspiring stories in the history of
baseball. The son of Eastern European parents, he rose from the streets of New York to rank among the greatest
home-run hitters of the game, and became the first Jewish player to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Along the
way he challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season; led the Detroit Tigers to four pennants;
fiercely stood up to anti-Semitic slurs, insults, and assaults; and was one of the first major leaguers to enlist in
the military at the outbreak of World War II. Hank Greenberg's extraordinary life in baseball-playing with and
against Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Charlie Gehringer, Joe DiMaggio, Dizzy Dean, and Bob Feller-
combined the uncommon courage, dignity, strength and, to be sure, humor, in the face of formidable odds.

Summary
With his familiar shock of white hair and craggy, prematurely aged face and twinkling eyes, Hall of Fame manager
Sparky Anderson was a one of a kind personality beloved by generations of fans not just in the two cities he led
to World Series championships, but throughout the baseball world. When he retired in 1995 he was third on the

championships in nine years and adding another with the Detroit Tigers whom he managed for seventeen
seasons. Throughout his years near or at the top of baseball through his 2000 election to the Hall of Fame,

Hockeytown Doc
A Half-Century of Red Wings Stories from Howe to Yzerman
Dr. John Finley, Gordie Howe

Summary
Reflecting on nearly five decades with the Detroit Red Wings, Dr. John Finley takes sports fans far beyond closed
doors and into the trainer's room where cuts were bandaged, broken noses were reset, sore muscles were
rubbed out, and casts made for broken bones. In this stellar memoir, Dr. Finley recounts his experiences with the
stars on the revitalized Red Wings franchise in recent years, including Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom, as
well as heroes of previous generations, including 1972 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Gordie Howe. Along the
way, Dr. Finley shares some of the most vivid accounts ever written on the subject of sports injuries, including
the hundreds of stitches he applied to Borje Salming's face after it was cut by Gerard Gallant's errant skate
blade, as well as his recommendation on the knee injury sustained by a young Steve Yzerman that ultimately
helped maintain his Hall of Fame career.

Oddball Minnesota
A Guide to Some Really Strange Places
Jerome Pohlen

Summary
Land of the world's largest prairie chicken, birthplace of Spam, and home of the world's oldest rock, this is
Minnesota, where summers are short, winters are long, and back-road wonders abound. This entertaining guide
wastes no time with descriptions of scenic lakes, pristine bike trails, or quaint cafés. Instead it directs travelers
(and residents) to the spot where Tiny Tim strummed his last notes on the ukulele; to the Cold Spring chapel
where two grasshoppers bow down to the Virgin Mary; and to the McLeod County Museum, where the mummy
on display could be from Peru or outer space. While ordinary tourists are fighting off mosquitoes in the Boundary
Waters, oddball travelers can size up the world's largest ear of corn and admire the fourth Zamboni ever built.
And one last thing: there aren't 10,000 lakes in Minnesota; there are 14,215. For travelers who are in search of
the unusual, there is no better reason to park the bike and hiking boots in the garage, fill up the gas tank, and

Mark Twain Was Right

The 2001 Cincinnati Riots
Dan P. Moore

Summary
In the format of a graphic novel and using journalism as a narrative, the story of the 2001 Cincinnati riots-the
largest urban unrest since the 1992 Los Angeles riots-is charted in this visual history. The book traces the riot's
genesis from the police killing of a 19-year-old African American man to his funeral six days later. What resulted
from the killing was a tumultuous cocktail of nonviolent civil disobedience, frustration-fueled looting, and police
violence. Told from a series of varying perspectives-activists, community leaders, and bystanders-this is a tale
of an inner-city community coming together. An overlooked yet crucial piece of American history is retold in a
contemporary format with an engaging narrative.

Monarchists of the Great Lakes
Ted McClelland

Summary
Chronicling the author's 10,000-mile "Great Lakes Circle Tour," this travel memoir seeks to answer a burning
question: Is there a Great Lakes culture, and if so, what is it? Largely associated with the Midwest, the Great
Lakes region actually has a culture that transcends the border between the United States and Canada. United
by a love of encased meats, hockey, beer, snowmobiling, deer hunting, and classic-rock power ballads, the folks
in Detroit have more in common with citizens in Windsor, Ontario, than those in Wichita, Kansas-while Toronto
residents have more in common with Chicagoans than Montreal's population. Much more than a typical armchair
travel book, this humorous cultural exploration is filled with quirky people and unusual places that prove the
obscure is far more interesting than the well known.
