Geography is one of the world's oldest disciplines, with its roots tracing back to the classical Greek concern with the physical structure of the earth and the human impacts on it. Geography challenges us to look at the relationship between people and the environment and their consequences. Geography is relevant to the world's current issues and problems, from pollution and resource management problems to the economic differences in the regions of the world. This course reviews the basic concepts and definitions that are the foundations of geography and gives you insights into what geographers do and geography's relevance into the future. The Global Geography 12 program provides students with a variety of learning opportunities to improve their understanding of the world around them and how internal and external factors affect it. It is intended that students will experience personal development and responsibility in addition to skills necessary for success in other Social Studies courses. Students of Global Geography will be expected to demonstrate An understanding of the interdependent relationship among individuals, societies and the environment and the implications for a sustainable future An understanding of the interactions among people, places and the environment An understanding of the past and how it affects the present and future Student Assessment and Evaluation This course will involve multiple modes of instruction and assessment. To ensure every student has the opportunity to learn and attain the above outcomes, students will be provided with various learning and assessment alternatives throughout the semester. The students do have one second opportunity for summative assessments with a discussion between student and teacher to arrange the time and method of assessment. If the student does not take advantage of this, or misses the mutually agreed upon time, the student will be awarded the original mark. See below for more information. Total Semester Course Work will be given a mark out of 100%, which equals 80% of the final mark. The final evaluation will be given a mark out of 100%, which equals 20% of the final mark and this exam may be exempted. An Interim mark will be given approximately half way through the semester to indicate the students achievement to date. Good Luck! Classroom Expectations: 1. All electronic devices (cell phones, MP3 players, iPods, etc.) are prohibited except as outlined below. While in class or other instructional areas, mobile phones and other electronic device may be used in for curriculum-related events at the teachers discretion. If electronic devices are confiscated from a repeat offender by a staff member there will contact home to parent or guardian and the student will have to see their respective Vice Principal to discuss the incident. 2. No hats, jackets or book bags/purses are allowed in the classroom. You will have to use your locker! 3. Food and drinks are prohibited in the classroom. Bottled water is permitted. 4. As Charles P. Class Requirements Students will be expected to have the following with them for each class: Global Connections textbook 3-ring binder and loose-leaf Pens, pencils and erasers (all hand-written assignments will be completed in blue or black ink) Coloured pencils USB drive Password for school computer network Active school email account Student Responsibilities: 1. Attendance in all classes is mandatory due to the large amount of work that needs to be covered in a short period of time. When you miss class it is YOUR responsibility to get the material missed. A parent or guardian must call the school at (902) 832-8970 to excuse your absence. Unexcused absences will be dealt with as follows: a. 5 unexcused absences will result in contact home via email b. 8 unexcused absences will result in contact directly with parent/guardian via phone call c. 10 unexcused absences will result in the case being referred to administration d. 14 unexcused absences will result in a letter home indicating danger of credit loss e. 16 unexcused absences could result in loss of credit and withdrawal from the course 2. Tardiness may also lead to academic hardships. Students are asked to be on time for class. Those showing up late should make minimal disruption when entering. Students who are late must go to the office and obtain a late slip before they are permitted to class. 3. Students should take ownership in ensuring they complete any evaluation they missed through absenteeism. This should be done on the students own time. 4. All assignments passed in for evaluation are expected to follow guidelines outlined in class and are expected at the beginning of the period for which they are assigned. Anything passed in after this point will be considered late. Late assignments and projects will not be assessed unless accompanied by an excused absence. 5. Students must be punctual about meeting specific due dates. Curriculum outcomes may not be met if assignments are late or not passed in. It is important that assignments are completed on time so that timely feedback can be provided. When a due date is missed for legitimate reasons, the teacher will consult with the student to set an absolute deadline for completion. Assignments not completed by that date will be given a score of zero. No extensions will be given to students without a legitimate reason. 6. The turnover rate for assignments is usually one week, depending on the type of assignment. Once assignments that were in on time are returned no other assignments will be accepted. A mark of zero will be recorded. 7. If you miss a class, you are expected to go to my twitter feed and see what you missed. You will be expected to have completed all homework assignments the following day or when you return to class. If you know you will be absent for a class, you must inform me ASAP, as all assignments/tests or quizzes may be due BEFORE you leave for a vacation! 8. When a test or quiz is missed due to a valid excuse, the student should be prepared to write the test or quiz at lunch or after school the day of his/her return with an excused absence recorded in guidance. 9. According to the school board assessment and evaluation policy, it is important to note that there is another opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the outcomes for a particular unit. If you have not been taken advantage of extra help throughout the course of the semester then you lose this opportunity. It is your responsibility to demonstrate that extra effort has been put forth to gain the understanding. Given the number of students and the number of summative assessments that occur throughout the semester, a pre-determined date will be set for the term test to occur. This date of this assessment will generally take place four days after the original test is returned to the student. You will then be expected to attend extra help for three consecutive days before rewriting the test on the fourth day. You should also make appropriate arrangements as the test will be held outside instructional hours.
