Walking The Talk...

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:48a

Happy Valentines Day!

The Good News

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Romans 12:9-13

Hospitality has long been a strong ethic of the Christian church. Since the day of the Apostle Paul, as illustrated by Romans 12, in addition to all the other refrains of the life of faith, extending hospitality is equal to love and prayer. By extending hospitality, we show love for others, not just those we know, but even to strangers and in so doing demonstrate the power of Christ in the world. The question is: how do we show hospitality? What is hospitality anyway? I recently learned a pretty good definition for hospitality from Dr. Craig Rennebohm. Craig says hospitality is simply creating safe space with a stranger. It is not a one-sided exercise. It takes two people to do it. It is not rushing over with How can I help you? Nobody likes to feel as if they are in an inferior position and getting in someones face, even with the right intentions, can sometimes feel like the opposite of hospitality. It feels threatening and even insulting. Hospitality can be as simple as noticing another person with a smile and a nod. Maybe we decide in that moment that if we see that person again, we are going to speak to them. We are going to acknowledge our first glimpse with the next step to a comfortable interaction. Hospitality is treating another human being with dignity and respect, as if they are just as important to us as those we know, and even ourselves. That requires that we slow down and make time for another. It is not enough to say we care. We are required to show up and do what demonstrates that care. Listening is the front line when it comes to hospitality. Finally, hospitality in our tradition is sharing food and refreshment. Its no accident that one symbol of our faith is the table of Christ, where we are nourished and where we are able to welcome others. Perhaps we might always have a pitcher of cold water ready for the stranger that might stop by our church or our home. Even if we can do nothing else for them, we could at least offer a cold drink of water. February is a month where we might consider hospitality. At HPC we will welcome our brothers and sisters in Christ from Spruce Street. We will celebrate St. Valentines Day. We will gather for worship each Sunday, and of course we will continue to look for ways to engage with others in the community as we speak peace to the homes and places we visit in Christs name. Hospitality is the way we live our faith with others. In this way, again according to Paul, we will let our love be genuine

Spruce Street Visit and Luncheon
By Amy Dillon During my almost 5 years at Hillsboro one phrase continues to pop up whenever I hear anyone speak about our relationship with Spruce Street Baptist Church. That phrase is, Our friends from Spruce Street. Its possible, I think, that you too may have heard this phrase so many times that we gloss over the power of those words. As I think about them today I am reminded of Proverbs 27:17 that says, As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. How many times have you been inspired, challenged and encouraged by our friends at Spruce Street? Whether youve been to dozens of combined worship services with Spruce Street or this is your very first one, you are invited to worship with friends on Sunday, February 9th at the 11:15 am service here at Hillsboro. We will also be hosting a luncheon after the service and request that you help by providing lots and lots of food in the following categories: If your last name begins with A-J, please bring a Main Dish If your last name begins with K-S, please bring Veggies or Side Dish If your last name begins with T-Z, please bring a Dessert (It helps a lot if you bring your food in a disposable container!) The Fellowship Team is also looking for several volunteers to help with lunch set up (warming food, removing empty platters from the buffet line, etc.) and also folks to help clean up when lunch is over. We hope youll make plans to be here for both worship and our meal together! Please contact me at amy@hpcnashville.org or at 665-0148 (Ext. 11) if you would like to help!

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

A Weekend With Marcus Borg

HPC Youth

Second Presbyterian Church will be hosting a weekend with American New Testament scholar, theologian and author Marcus Borg on March 7th, 8th and 9th. Borg will lead attendees on a historically sound journey of faith on March 7th and 8th, followed by Sunday morning presentations open to all. If you would like to register for this event, you can pick up a pamphlet in the church foyer. Registration is also available online at: www.weekendwithmarcusborg.

Whats the HAPs

CAT Report: On January 24 & 25 our high schoolers gathered to talk about leadership, play games (ask Jordan about his friend, Stripey) and make plans for spring and summer. They chose the rather awesome name Christ Action Team, or CAT, for themselves (ask any of them what inspired the name). Be on the lookout for great things from this group as they continue to look for ways to serve!

Mobile Meals Drivers Needed

The Mobile Meals program our church supports is in need of two drivers. It only takes an hour and a half once a month to bring prepared meals to those in need of a hot meal. We need replacement drivers for the second and fourth Monday of every month. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this blessed task.

Family Camp 2 01 4
By Amy Dillon I make it a habit every year to look through the photos from our previous Family Camps at NaCoMe Camp and Conference Center to refresh my memory, to get creativity flowing and to reminisce a little. This year, as I ask you to mark your calendars and send in your registrations to attend this years NaCoMe FX: Family Experience on March 29-30 I wanted to share with you some of the photos that capture moments from previous Family Camps. This camp is a unique experience for our families who have children birth-12th grade to spend the weekend together in prayer, Bible Study, recreation and a whole lot of fun! Please contact me at amy@ hpcnashville.org or at 665-0148 (Ext. 11) if you have any questions!

The Good News

Hi Everyone!
My name is Caroline Crozier and I am thrilled to join you as HPCs newest Director of Communications! To tell you a little bit about myself, I grew up in Clarksville, TN where most of my family still lives. This past May I graduated from Belmont University with a double major in public relations and Spanish. I spent the summer traveling around Europe with my mother and enjoying life before I continued in my job search process. Before accepting this offer, I was enrolled in graduate school at Austin Peay State University. After only having attended a couple of services here at HPC, I can say without a doubt that this is the most welcoming congregation I have met. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to getting to know you all and being a part of such a strong team. A few random facts about myself: I was born in Germany (Army Brat) I spent five months studying abroad in Santiago de Compostela, Spain I am a huge movie junkie I love to travel Ft. Lauderdale, Florida beach is my favorite getaway I love anything outdoors (tennis, hiking, basketball, swimming) My family has two pugs (Muggsie and Mojo) If you need to get in touch with me, you can reach me at: 931.561.3335 or at caroline@hpcnashville.org
