INTRODUCTION
The G.703 Data Interface Unit is one of the DYNACARD primary multiplex equipment channel units. The unit includes 10 data channels complying with the ITUT Recommendation G.703. Characteristics:

1.1

Structure and transmission management


The Data Unit 21120 is a plugin unit (card) constructed on EURO2 sized printed circuit boards and installed in TM4 equipment cartridges. The unit includes ten identical data channels. The unit contains two data interface circuits, a control block, line interfaces and a unit power supply. Operation of the unit is controlled by the Service Terminal via the service interface located at the front edge of the main unit (DYNACARD MUX). The interface is used for reading fault information from the equipment and for giving settings or controls for the desired unit.

CONTROL

Control and monitoring

The block is controlled by a local processor and it:

conveys the information on the status of the unit to the main unit of the equipment via the command bus produces alarm A by means of an external +5 V auxiliary voltage if the operating voltage is disconnected performs settings and controls coming via the service interface and via the command bus controls the operation of the equipment in fault situations Bus interface

In the receive direction the data interface circuit:

reads the data from the time slot allocated for the channel in the 2 Mbit/s bus generates a continuous 64 kbit/s data signal from the data signal read from the time slot generates the 8 kHz octet timing

2.2

Contradirectional operation
Both transmission directions include two symmetric pairs (120 W), one containing the data signal and the other containing the 64 kHz and 8 kHz timing information (figure 3). Generation of contradirectional interface signal

Contradirectional operation, signals used

The electrical interface between the data unit (DIU) and the terminal equipment (DTE) is implemented by the line interface. The data unit transmits the transmit direction timing signal to the terminal equipment which uses it for data transmission. The DATU circuit inserts the data signal coming from the terminal equipment into the selected time slot in the DM 2 internal bus, from where it is transferred to the MUX unit.

Similarly, the data signal received from the DM 2 bus is sent to the terminal equipment. Simultaneously with the data, timing signal of the receive direction is sent to the terminal equipment. The time slots used by the channels are set using the Service Terminal.

2.3

Codirectional operation
Both transmission directions include one symmetric pair (120 W), which is used for transmission of the data, the 64 kHz timing and the 8 kHz octet timing. The signal is generated as presented in figure 4. Generation of codirectional interface signal

Generation principle of codirectional 64 kbit/s signal

The 64 kbit/s phase is divided into four parts. The binary one is coded as a fourbit sequence 1100. The binary zero is coded as a fourbit sequence 1010. The binary signal is converted into a threelevel signal by changing the polarity of every second group. Every eighth group violates the polarity rule. This violation indicates that the group in question contains the last bit of the octet.

Operation of the data transfer is similar to that of the contradirectional interface with the exception of timing signals. The signal element and octet timing are coded into the data signals transmitted to both directions.

2.4

Monitoring of fault situations


The control block monitors the operating voltages of the unit and the data and timing signals coming from the terminal equipment. In fault situ ations, the data is converted into an AIS signal in one or both directions and the MUX unit is informed of the fault. If an alarm is received from the MUX unit, the signal to be transmitted to the terminal equipment is converted into an AIS signal and the octet timing is cut off if required. Sending of the AIS signal in fault situations can be disabled. Service LEDs Red Yellow Green Serious fault in the unit or unit not included in the configuration of the equipment. The fault is in the signal received by the unit. The unit is addressed by Service Terminal or Transmission Management Computer.

If the operating voltages of the unit are cut off (power supply fault), the auxiliary voltage connected to the unit activates the red service LED.

2.5

Loopbacks
The data coming from the 64k interface can be looped back in each channel of the unit (interface loopback, figure 5). Alternatively, an equipment loopback can be performed in the unit with respect to the 2M interface (see figure 6). The loopbacks are connected via the service interface. In order for the loopbacks not to remain valid by mistake, they are disconnected automatically after the timeout defined for the controls has expired.

TRANSMISSION MANAGEMENT FACILITIES OF THE UNIT


The transmission management of the data unit includes e.g. controls, settings, testing and measurements. The transmission management facilities are performed either locally with a Service Terminal or remotely using a Service Terminal or a Transmission Management Computer. The facilities are menudriven, the menus containing 1 to 9 levels. The menus, their use and all obtainable responses are presented in section Operation with Service Terminal. The following summarizes briefly the characteristics of the facilities following the order of the main menu. 3.1

Fault display and rack alarm cancellation (1, 2, 3)


Fault display (1) The fault display indicates the unit ID, the alarm status, states of all units and possible faults of an equipment (e.g. DM 2) in plain language. Local alarm cancel (2) Local alarm cancel cancels the rack alarms A and B produced by the equipment. A Dalarm is obtained as a reminder of cancellation. An unnecessary cancellation produces also a Balarm. Reset local cancel (3) Removes the Dalarm obtained as a reminder of cancellation. Cancels the alarm cancellation.

3.2

Identifications (4)
The facility displays the identifications of the equipment required e.g. in transmission management of the service network. Some of the identifi cations can be modified by the user. The identifications of the data unit are:

document number for the Operation with Service Terminal manual related to the program unit ID (type designation and version of the unit, e.g. TU 21120 03A) program ID (type designation and version of the local processor of the unit, e.g. TS 25400 10A)

3.3

Controls, temporary (5)


The controls are facilities required in the troubleshooting and servicing of the equipment (loopbacks, forced controls for alarms, etc.). All controls are removed after the preset time interval has expired. The unitassociated controls include e.g. the ones given below. Interface loopback The channel to be looped back is replaced by sending the AIS signal to the 2M interface. The signal fed to the unit comes out from the same interface.

Equipment loopback The signal coming from the 2M interface is looped back to the 2M (channelassociated). The channel in question is replaced by AIS signal from the 64k interface. Forced indication The forced indications force the service LEDs on the front edge of the equipment and generate artificial alarm situations. These are used e.g. for testing the alarms or for addressing the faulty equipment from the far end.

Forced red indication produces rack alarm B. Forced yellow indication produces rack alarm B. Forced no indication disables the activation of the red, yellow and green LED and produces rack alarm B.

3.4

Settings, permanent (6)


The settings are used for controlling the equipment/unit permanently into certain operating modes. The settings replace almost all the strap pings used in the Dgeneration equipment. The settings are stored in the nonerasable memory of the equipment and are retained there also during power outages. If the equipment e.g. becomes damaged and is replaced by a new one, the settings of the new equipment must be checked.

Measurements (7)
The data unit measures its internal operating voltages 5 V and -12 V. The results can be read via the service interface. The channelassociated fault information can be read via the service interface.

Testing (9)

3.8

User privileges (10)


Some of the transmission management facilities of the equipment can be protected against unintentional or intentional misuse. The protections are implemented by setting either the password or the PIN signal as the condition for the use of the facility.
