WHO IS THE LORD THAT I SHOULD OBEY HIS VOICE?

Ex 5:1-2 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let
my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD,
that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

I. HE IS THE LORD WHO FREES HIS PEOPLE.

A. He physically freed Israel.

1. Ex 14:23-30
23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his
chariots, and his horsemen.
24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the
pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from
the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon
the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning
appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came
into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them
on their right hand, and on their left.
30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead
upon the sea shore.

B. He spiritually frees us today.

1. Rom 6:16-18
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine
which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

II. HE IS THE LORD WHO INSPIRES FAITHFULNESS.

A. He inspired Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.

1. Dan 3:13-18
13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then
they brought these men before the king.
14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye serve
my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye
worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that
shall deliver you out of my hands?
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to
answer thee in this matter.
17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us
out of thine hand, O king.
18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image
which thou hast set up.

B. He inspired Paul.
1. 2 Tim 1:8-12
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of
the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own
purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath
brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have
believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that
day.

III. HE IS THE LORD OF BOUNDLESS LOVE.

A. How much does He love us?

1. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

B. He is love.
1. 1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that
dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

C. He delights in mercy.
1. Mic 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the
transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he
delighteth in mercy.

IV. HE IS THE LORD OF SERIOUS EXPECTATIONS

A. He expects diligent faithfulness.

1. 2 Peter 3:9-18
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward ,
not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a
great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be
burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy
conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth
righteousness.
2
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace,
without spot, and blameless.
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according
to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood,
which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own
destruction.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error
of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now
and for ever. Amen.

V. HE IS THE LORD WHO SHALL REWARD THE RIGHTEOUS.

A. He begins by remitting the sins of the obedient.

1. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

B. The faithful shall receive eternal life.

1. Rom 6:22-23 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit
unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal
life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

VI. HE IS THE LORD WHO SHALL DESTROY THE DISOBEDIENT.

A. He is able but reluctant to consign the disobedient to hell.

1. Matt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body , but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear
him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2. Luke 13:27-28
27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the
prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

3. Matt 25:41-46
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire,
prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me
not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or
naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of
these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

4. 2 Thess 1:7b-9
7 … when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord
Jesus Christ:

3
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory
of his power;

5. Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and
brimstone: which is the second death.
