O #9#% $& "'( P $/$.!-: 5e live in a %orld %here everything can $e controlled and operated automatically0 $ut there are still a fe% important sectors in our country %here automation has not $een adopted or not $een put to a full-fledged use! 2griculture is one such factor and 1reenhouses form an important part of the agriculture and horticulture sectors in our country as they can $e used to gro% plants under controlled climatic conditions for optimum produce! 2utomating a greenhouse envisages monitoring and controlling of the climatic parameters %hich directly or indirectly govern the plant gro%th and hence their produce D(&#%#"#$% $& "'( / $0-(1: 2 num$er of pro$lems associated %ith the a$ove mentioned systems are enumerated as $elo%( 1! *omple8ity involved in monitoring climatic parameters li;e humidity0 soil moisture0 #llumination0 soil p40 temperature0 etc %hich directly or indirectly govern the plant gro%th! 2! #nvestment in the automation process are high0 as todayFs greenhouse control systems are designed for only one parameter monitoring "as per 1G3G research centre'H to control more than one parameter simultaneously there %ill $e a need to $uy more than one system! 3! 4igh maintenance and need for s;illed technical la$our! The modern proposed systems use the mo$ile technology as the communication schemes and %ireless data acCuisition systems0 providing glo$al access to the information a$out oneFs farms! -ut it suffers from various limitations li;e design comple8ity0 inconvenient repairing and high price!

2lso the relia$ility of the system is relatively lo%0 and %hen there are malfunctions in local devices0 all local and tele data %ill $e lost and hence the %hole system collapses! /ore over farmers in #ndia do not %or; under such sophisticated environment and find no necessity of such an advanced system0 and cannot afford the same! Geeping these issues in vie%0 a microcontroller $ased monitoring and control system is designed to find implementation in the near future that %ill help #ndian farmers! O0*(+"#B(: The proposed system is an em$edded system %hich %ill closely monitor and control the microclimatic parameters of a greenhouse on a regular $asis round the cloc; for cultivation of crops or specific plant species %hich could ma8imiDe their production over the %hole crop gro%th season and to eliminate the difficulties involved in the system $y reducing human intervention to the $est possi$le e8tent! >$ ; P-!%: Three general steps can $e follo%ed to appropriately select the control system( S"(/ C 1: I)(%"#&4 1(!.u !0-( B! #!0-(. #1/$ "!%" "$ / $)u+"#$%7 2n electronic sensor for measuring a varia$le must readily availa$le0 accurate0 relia$le and lo% in cost! The simplest strategy is to use threshold sensors that directly affect actuation of devices! +or e8ample0 the temperature inside a greenhouse can $e affected $y controlling heaters0 fans0 or %indo% openings once it e8ceeds the ma8imum allo%a$le limit! The microcontroller then performs the needed actions $y employing relays until the strayed out parameter has $een $rought $ac; to its optimum level! Since a microcontroller is used as the heart of the system0 it ma;es the set-up lo%-cost and effective nevertheless! 2s the system also employs an I*D display for continuously alerting the user a$out the condition inside the greenhouse0 the entire set-up $ecomes user friendly! Thus0 this system eliminates the dra%$ac;s of the e8isting set-ups mentioned in the previous section and is designed as an easy to maintain0 fle8i$le and lo% cost solution!
