History of Basketball 1)HOW

There was 13 rules for the new game. He (James Naismith) divided his class of 18 into 2 teams of 9 players each and set about to teach them the basics of his new game of Basketball. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball, into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed.

TIMEOUTS **All timeouts are called through score table** Timeout opportunities: 1) After whistle (and referees instructions to score table); 2) After a final made foul shot; 3) After opposing team scores; 4) Before start of free throws; Request must be made before whistle. During free throws the request can be made anytime during the free throw sequence. How to call a timeout: Sound horn (and stop clock if after foul shot or opposing team scores); Indicate timeout (with signal); Point to the bench of requesting team; Start timing 60 seconds as soon as referee signals timeout; Sound horn after 50 seconds; Sound horn after 60 seconds. Cancelling a timeout: Requesting team can cancel timeout any time before the score table sounds the horn/makes the signal for timeout. No timeouts: No timeouts between foul shots; Timeouts cannot be carried over to 2ND half or overtime. Overtime: 1 timeout per overtime period. SUBSTITUTIONS **Players must report to table and request substitution** Substitution opportunities: 1) After whistle (and referees instructions to score table); 2) After a made final foul shot; 3) After opposing team scores (last 2 min of 2ND half or O.T. only); 4) Substitutions can be made prior to the start of free throws. How to make a substitution: At next whistle sound horn and indicate substitution with symbol; Referee calls in players. TEAM FOULS Inform coaches the number of personal fouls recorded for the player committing the foul; Inform referee if penalty (on 5th and subsequent fouls); Team fouls are reset every quarter.
