Definitions:
Kinematics: The study of motion without regard to Forces Kinetics: The Study of forces on systems in motion. Mechanism: Device that transform motion to some desired pattern, with very low forces and transmit little power. Machine: a Mechanism designed to provide significant forces and power. It must first be studied "kinematically" to find out the Velocity/Acceleration then analyze its kinetics to determine forces. Mechatronics: interdisciplinary area of engineering that combines mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science. A typical mechatronic system picks up signals from the environment, processes them to generate output signals, transforming them for example into forces, motions and actions.

Design Process:

1.- Voice of the customer Improved drill.. A better lawn mower.. A Safer Seat belt 2.- Gather background information about the physics, chemistry or other aspects of the problem, Benchmark products, patent search, ASME, SAE etc. 3.- Brainstorming, idea generation, creative phase. 4.- Analyze and compare: performance, reliability, cost. Generate a decision matrix, rate each and summarize the results. Generate detailed designs, Requirements and Specifications. 5.- Typically fabricated using low volume tools but must reflect the intended design. 6.- Test the prototype at Lab facilities and prove it meets the performance requirements & specifications. 7.- Engineering reports, test data, findings 8.- Re-design if necessarily.

Design Methodology:
Based on Concurrent Engineering EC, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computed Aided Engineering (CAE). Are identified by three main tasks: (1) Mathematical Model of the kinematics and dynamics of the Design, computerized graphic modeling of the configuration (2) Graphical simulation of operation and control of action (3) and integration of technologies that constitute the new mechatronic product. Concurrent Engineering is a set of Design and manufacturing practices, which considers varies life cycles values for a product from the design stage and covers other aspects such as ease of manufacture, ease of assembly and functionality. CAD is the use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations.
