5.2.5 Equipment rules for cubicles with 3-pole 3NJ4 in-line units
Arrangement of the in-line units in the cubicle
There are two possibilities for arranging the in-line units in the cubicle:
From left to right with 3NJ4 in-line units decreasing in size
From right to left with 3NJ4 in-line units decreasing in size
Permissible capacity of the feeders
The specified rated currents for 3NJ4 are applicable when the 3NJ4 in-line units are
equipped with the largest possible LV HRC fuse links. When using smaller LV HRC links an
equal utilization (in percent) is permissible.
Example:
In-line unit 3NJ414 in non-ventilated cubicle,
equipped with 500 A LV HRC links,
Ambient temperature 40 C:
Max. permissible continuous operational current = (370 A/630 A) x 500 A = 290 A

Note
There is no resistance to internal arcs when operating the in-line switch disconnectors
through the door!

Planning with reactive power compensation
7.3 Mathematical determination of the required capacitor power
Planning with SIVACON S8
60 Planning Manual, 03/2008, A5E01619128-01
7.3 Mathematical determination of the required capacitor power
1. The power bill from the power supply company indicates the consumed active power
demand in kWh and the reactive power in kvarh; the power supply company demands a
cos of 0.9 to 0.95; the reactive power should be compensated to a value that
approximates cos = 1.
Determination of tan
1
= reactive power: active power = kvarh: kWh
2. Find the conversion factor "F" in the table and multiply it by the average power
consumption Pm. In the case of tan
1
,
cos
1
shows the power factor before compensation, whereas in the case of factor "F"
cos
2
shows the desired power factor for compensation.
3. The required compensation power is stated in kvar.
Example:
Reactive power Wb = 19,000 kvarh per month
Active power Ww = 16,660 kWh per month
Average power consumption
Active power : working time = 16,660 kWh : 180 h = 92.6 kW
tan
1
= reactive power : active power = 19,000 kWh : 16,660 kWh = 1.14

Power factor cos 1 = 0.66 (at tan 1

= 1.14)
Power factor cos 2

= 0.95 (desired value)
Conversion factor "F" = 0.81 (from tan 1 and cos 2)
Compensation power = Average power x factor "F"
= 92.6 kW x 0.81 = 75 kvar
Result
The required compensation power is 75 kvar.

8.4 Entry and connection to the busbar trunking system
Connection to the Siemens SIVACON S8 power distribution board system as type-tested low-voltage
switchgear and controlgear assembly (TTA) in accordance with DIN EN 60439-1 and -2
SIVACON S8 and SIVACON 8PS series LD and LX busbar trunking systems are connected
via an integrated busbar trunking connection piece for rated currents up to 6300 A.
The busbar connection can be executed from the top, as well as from the bottom and thus
facilitates a flexible interface.
Factory-fitted copper plating between point-to-point and line busbar systems guarantees a
high short-circuit rating, which is ensured by a type test, and offers a high level of safety for
power transmission.
Connection options
The SIVACON S8 connection system is completely integrated in the distribution board. For
connection, special distribution terminal boxes with a circumferential sheet collar of type
LD/LX-VEU- are required.
Straight, angular, and offset distribution terminal boxes are available.
The connection system is flat-mounted in the distribution board, as viewed from the front of
the distribution board.

Note
One bus segment can contain up to 32 nodes. Repeaters and bus termination modules are
not addressable, they are however counted as nodes of the bus segment as shown in the
graphic.

Profibus - baud rate restriction (500 kbit/s)
The total length of the stub lines in the communication network (all bus stub lines inside the
withdrawable units) influences the transmission rate for PROFIBUS communication. The
permissible total length of such stub lines is exceeded with a maximum segment utilisation
(30 nodes) and can thus lead to communication faults.
The maximum transmission rate for the PROFIBUS communication is thus limited to
500 kBaud.
The use of 1.5 Mbaud is permissible in exceptional cases, and only when complying with the
following conditions:
Restriction of the number of bus nodes per segment to 1015 bus nodes (depending on
withdrawable unit size)
Devices with segment monitoring functions (special OLMs and diagnostics repeaters) are
not used

The PEN conductor must be laid so that it is isolated over its entire course, even in the
low-voltage main distribution board.
In the case of a distributed incoming feeder, 4-pole switchgear and protective devices must
be provided in the section of the change-over switch and its incoming feeder (no parallel
operation).

Planning Manual, 03/2008, A5E01619128-01 83
8.7 The safety standard TTA - PTTA
The safety standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies
The requirements imposed on switchgear relative to heat dissipation, high packing density,
mastering of short-circuit currents, and insulating capacity have increased in recent years.
Safe operation of low-voltage switchgear is only ensured if the manufacturer verifiably
complies with the standards applicable for the switchgear and controlgear assembly.
Only switchgear in accordance with the standards applicable today satisfies current safety
regulations.
Applicable standards:
IEC / EN 60439-1, VDE 0660 Part 500
Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies Type-tested and partially type-tested
assemblies
These standards are identical in content. They show two possibilities in accordance with
which low-voltage switchgear may be manufactured:
Type-tested switchgear and controlgear assembly (TTA)
Partially type-tested switchgear and controlgear assembly (PTTA)
Type-tested assembly (TTA)
In these assemblies, all components have been type-tested, both individually as well as in
the assembled form, including all electrical and mechanical connections.
Use of other switchgear and protective devices is only permissible if its technical data is at
least identical or better (conclusion by analogy).
With type-tested assemblies, all proofs must be established by means of tests.
Partially type-tested assembly (PTTA)
These assemblies contain both type-tested as well as non type-tested components. Non
type-tested components must be derived from type-tested components.
With partially type-tested assemblies, two exceptions are permissible:
1. Proof of compliance with the limit overtemperatures. For switchgear with infeed amperage
up to max. 3150 A, verification can also be provided by means of extrapolation.
2. Verification of short-circuit rating is not required for switchgear that is protected by a
current-limiting protective device with cut-off current 15 kA.
If an extrapolation or calculation in accordance with DIN VDE 0660 Part 500 is required, this
must always be based on derivation from type-tested systems.

Environmental conditions for switchgear
The outside climate and the external environmental conditions (natural foreign matters,
chemically active harmful substances, small animals) can have varyingly significant
influences on switchgear. The influence depends on the air-conditioning equipment of the
switchgear room.
If there are higher concentrations pollutant reducing measures are required, for example:
Air intake for the equipment room from a point with lower charge
Place the equipment room under slight excess pressure (e.g. injecting clean air into the
switchgear)
Equipment room air conditioning (temperature reduction, relative humidity < 60 %, if
necessary use pollutant filters)
Reduction of warming (over-dimensioning of switchgear or components such as busbars

8.9 Resistance to internal arcs
Resistance to internal arcs
The testing of low-voltage switchboards under internal arc conditions is considered a special
test in accordance with IEC 61641 and VDE 0660 Part 500, Supplement 2.
This test is used to assess the risk which persons may be exposed in the even of internal
arcs.
Thanks to its testing under internal arc conditions, SIVACON offers verification of operator
safety with the assessment criteria stated below as a standard feature.
Assessment criteria:
1. Properly secured doors, covers, etc., should not open.
2. Parts that may pose risks should not fly off.
3. No holes should form in the freely accessible outer parts of the enclosure (casing).
4. Vertically attached indicators should not ignite.
5. The protective conductor circuit for touchable parts of the enclosure must still remain
functional.

Grading for fault limitation:
The top priority is the attempt to prevent formation of internal arcs completely. All quality
assurance measures serve this purpose. These measures start with development of the
system components, which is accompanied by numerous type tests, and also comprise the
switchgears correct configuration following order placement as well as routine tests during
production. A clearly defined module structure and DP-supported configuration, ordering,
and handling procedures are the basis for configuration.
SIVACON internal arcing concept
Operator safety
The configurable standard ensures operator safety in the event of internal arcing for 50kA /
440 V / 100 ms. Higher short-circuit current stress and prolonged arc burn times must be
requested.
Internal arcing steps
The arcing steps describe the limitation of effects of an internal arc on the system or system
areas (cubicles, functional compartments, etc.)

Main busbar insulated
Independently of the measures described above the main busbars can be insulated with

B.1 Rated values
In compliance with IEC/EN 60439-1, the manufacturers of low-voltage switchgear and
controlgear assemblies specify rated values. These rated values apply to specified operating
conditions and characterise the suitability of a switchgear and controlgear assembly.
Coordination of equipment or configuration of switchgear and controlgear assemblies must
be based on these rated values.
Rated short-time withstand current (I
cw
)
IEC / EN 60439-1; 4.3
As the rms value of the short-circuit current, the rated short-time withstand current
characterises the thermal strength of a switchgear and controlgear assembly circuit under a
transient load. The rated short-time withstand current is normally determined for a duration of
1 s; deviating time values must be specified. The rated short-time withstand current is
specified for the trunking and/or main busbars of a switchgear and controlgear assembly.
Rated peak withstand current (I
pk
)
IEC / EN 60439-1; 4.4
As the peak value of the impulse current, the rated peak withstand current characterises the
dynamic strength of a circuit in a switchgear and controlgear assembly. The rated peak
withstand current is specified for the trunking and/or main busbars of a switchgear and
controlgear assembly.
Rated conditional short-circuit current (I
cc
)
IEC / EN 60439-1; 4.5
The conditional rated short-circuit current corresponds to the uninfluenced short-circuit
current that a circuit in a switchgear and controlgear assembly, protected by a short-circuit
protective device, can carry without damage (for a certain time). The conditional rated
short-circuit current is therefore specified for outgoing feeders and/or infeeds with circuit
breakers, for example.
Rated control voltage (U
c
)
IEC / EN 60947-1; 4.5.1
This is the voltage that is applied to the normally-open actuation contact in a control circuit. It
may deviate from the rated control supply voltage due to transformers or resistors in the
switching circuit.

voltage must never be higher than the rated insulation voltage.
Rated operating voltage
Rated short-circuit breaking capacity (I
cn
)
IEC /EN 60947-1; 4.3.6.3
The highest current that a switching device can break at rated operating voltage and
frequency without damage. It is specified as an rms value.
Rated operating voltage
Rated short-circuit making capacity (I
cm
)
IEC / EN 60947-1; 4.3.6.2
The highest current that a switching device can activate at a specific rated operating voltage
and frequency without damage. Contrary to the other characteristic data, it is specified as a
peak value.
Rated operating voltage
Rated impulse withstand voltage (U
imp
)
IEC / EN 60947-1; 4.3.1.3
This is a measure of the strength of the air paths in the interior of the switchgear in relation to
transient overvoltages. Suitable switching devices can be used to ensure that deactivated
parts of a system cannot transmit overvoltages from the line on which they are used.
