WEEK NO: 3

To create a simple map for Johor Barrage project. - We create a simple map regarding the Johor Bahru barrage project on the Sg. Johor and Sg. Linggiu catchment area. - What I had done is o Confirmed the location of water intake station and rainfall stations with a cross reference with topography map and Google Earth software. o Study and analyse maps on Johor Barrage project. o Locate the rivers and its tributaries. o Draw the rivers and its tributaries using Global Mapper software. To calculate design flow of Kuantan Bus Depot. - Kuantan bus depoh. The proposed project is to built a bus depot on Kuantan and our job is to design the dimension of the drain needed to facilitate the incoming runoff from the bus depot area. - What had I done is; o We identify the type of terrain and surface in the bus depot area by using map provided by draftsman. o Calculate the catchment area for each of the proposed drains in the map. o Using Manual Saliran Mesra Alam (MSMA), get the needed coefficient and constant such as Manning Coefficient and Fitting Constant for the IDF Empirical Equation for Different Locations. o Calculate the intensity of the rain on that particular area. o Using formula provide by MSMA, calculate the design flow from the bus depot area. o We use various return periods from 2 years up until 100 year for the project to be reliable longer. I learned more about the usage of Microsoft Excel.

Date: Tuesday, 28 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: To familiarise with Pavement Drainage in MSMA.

WEEK NO: 3

Contents: To familiarise with Pavement Drainage in MSMA. - Using Manual Aliran Mesra Alam 2nd edition (figure 3.3), study on chapter Pavement Drainage. - Discuss with engineer about possible outcome from the reading such as a work file. o Computing possible excel work file that will help compute values according to MSMA. o The idea was to make a work file that will incorporate the formula and value needed by a specific work such as how to fine design flow in a designated area. o This work file will be based on the manual. o No dateline was set as the completion of the work file will depends on the time without tasks or projects from supervisor. - What can I summaries about this chapter is: o Pavement drainage plays around the movement of water on the pavements of roads. o It is important to control the spread and depth of water especially during rainy days as it can prevent ; o Traffic interruption; Skid resistance reduction; Increase of potential for hydroplaning; and Vehicle steering difficulties.

Pavement drainage take into considerations a few things to design which are; Longitudinal section; Cross/transverse section; Curb and gutter; Roadside and Median channels; and Median barriers, with a different value and constant for a different pavement usage.

o o o

Gutter is the section of the pavement that convey the storm water out into the drain out of the road. There were two typical type of gutter namely conventional and shallow type (figure 3.4).u To calculate the design flow for a gutter, a modified version of mannings equation is used;

o o

Mannings Roughness, n value varies with a different type of pavement. For example, value of 0.016 is use for a rough asphaltic pavement while a value 0.013 is use for a smooth for a concrete gutter-asphalt pavement. Besides typical gutter design, there were also composite gutter section that combining different types of gutter. This type of gutter need to consider the flow in the depress section of the gutter and use a different formula to be compute;

Type of inlet used (figure 3.5) can be divided into; Grate inlets; Curb-opening inlets; Slotted inlets; and Combination inlets. Inlet design must take into consideration the flow of the water on the pavement and their interception capacity. When the velocity approaching the grate less than splash over velocity, the grate will intercept essentially all the frontal flow. Conversely, if the velocity approaching grater more than splash over velocity, only part of the flow can be intercepted. A part of the flow will be intercepted , dependent on the cross slope of the pavement , the length of the grate, flow velocity. Sweeper inlet is a combination inlet that will intercept debris which otherwise clog the grate. A sweeper combination inlet has an interception capacity equal to the sum of the curb opening upstream the grate together with the opening of the grate itself. Use of depressed inlets and combination inlets enhances the interception capacity of the inlet.

WEEK NO: 3

To calculate the details needed by a pump sump. To calculate formwork, concrete volume, reinforcement bar needed for L-shape unit for Sungai Bogak.

Contents: To calculate the details needed by a pump sump. - The pump sump dimension was given by engineer and I had to find the estimation for the concrete and reinforcement bar needed. - What I had done is : o Sketch the 3-Dimensional picture of the pump sump. o Calculate the formwork (temporary moulds into which the concrete are poured) area for the structure. o After formwork, concrete volume of the pump sump is calculated. o For the weight of the reinforcement bar, we use estimation which is; 1 m3 concrete = 340 Kg reinforcement bar To calculate formwork, concrete volume, reinforcement bar needed for L-shape unit for Sungai Bogak Section. - Sungai Bogak is part of Sungai Kerian Flood Mitigation Plan. In this section, the river side will be enclosed by a L-unit to avoid flooding especially when there were heavy rain and storm. - The land around the river were in a low elevation and to solve this, the L-unit is proposed to be used. The L-unit will increase the boundary of Sungai Bogak thus avoiding surrounding area around the river to be flooding. - What I had done is; o To understand the drawing of the L-unit and able to imagine the dimension and shape of it. o Calculate the formwork, volume concrete blinding grade 15 and also volume of concrete volume grade 40 that will build up the L-unit for 1 meter unit. o Identified the steel reinforcement bar configuration and dimension in the L-unit for 1 meter unit. I also group the steel rebar into grade and total its weight using Microsoft Excel. o Find total steel rebar needed and concrete volume that will be use for Sungai Bogak section which is 575 meter.

Date: Thursday, 30 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: To brief about site visit plan. To identify the outlet in Sg. Gombak and Sg. Klang.

WEEK NO: 3

Contents: To brief about site visit plan. - Help engineer briefing to fellow colleagues about our planned to the site. - Prepare table about data needed to be collect base on previous site visit. - Split into 3 group of two for Sg. Gombak stretch from Jalan Parlimen to PWTC(left side and right side), Masjid Jamek to Jalan Dang Wangi stretch and Sg. Gombak stretch from starting PWTC. To identify the outlet in Sg. Gombak and Sg. Klang. - Go to Sg. gombak and Sg. Klang right stretch. - What I had done is: o We revisit the section and recheck the measurements and locations of the outlets. o We also take the elevation of the culvert from the berm . o We also had started to extended our observation to Sungai Gombak (PWTC Kampung Puah stretch). o To compile the data collected. Observation - A lot of homeless people can be seen on the berm especially under bridges. - A few places had sign of drug addicts and their left over equipment. - Poor maintenance from DBKL can be seen everywhere along the river especially culverts which suppose to be a flap gate that had broken. - Noticeable places for Aedes mosquito to breed.

WEEK NO: 3

To compile data collected during site visit to Sg. Klang and Sg. Gombak. To meet with contractor involved in Masjid Jamek renovation.

Contents: To compile data collected during site visit to Sg. Klang and Sg. Gombak. - Data collected during Sg.. Gombak and Sg.. Klang needed to be compile before can be presented to engineers - What I had done is : o Compile data into excel with attachment of the outlets pictures together with its dimension, elevation and type. o The data also needed to be update and insert into the AutoCAD drawing in the computer. To meet with contractor involved in Masjid Jamek renovation. - Go to masjid Jamek for meeting with the contractor involved in the renovation of Masjid Jamek. - What had I done is : o Visit Masjid Jamek which is currently under renovation. o Meeting and discussion with the contractor side about possibility of rerouting the outlet of the drains from Masjid Jamek compound to Sg. Gombak side where the interceptor for project River of Life will be located. o Masjid Jamek compound located exactly at the meeting point of Sg.. Gombak and Sg.. Klang. It is important to have all Masjid Jamek outlet reroute so that all the water from the outlet can be treated at the centralise treatment plant under ROL. - What I observed : o The mosque compound had already closed for more than a year and will be open for prayer at the end of 2013. o However, the works for drainage have yet being tendered by DBKL and current contractor only responsible with structural aspect. o The drainage condition were bad and if the mosque to be use before drainage works completed there were a lot of things needed to be considered(most of the drain was clogged by sand and vegetation.
