Date: Monday, 20 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: To calculate cost estimation for Sijangkang Flood Mitigation in Klang To study and compile data about debris deflector.

WEEK NO: 2

Contents: Sijangkang Flood Mitigation in Klang - I got a task related to Sijangkang Flood Mitigation Project in Klang. Sijangkang Flood Mitigation project plan to widen the earth channels with a concrete channels. - The task I had done is; o My task is to calculate the cost needed of the concrete lining of the channels. o Also, I need to calculate the cost estimation for the replacement crossings and bridges that need to be built for the project to be finish. o I learn how to determine the chainage and its dimension based on data and map produced by the staff. To study and compile data about debris deflector. - I got a task from engineer to do a research about debris deflector o A client want to construct a bridge across a river in Kuala Lumpur but their design was rejected by DBKL. o It is because, recently, DBKL had ensured new rules regarding bridge construction. Which is new bridge to be built must not have piers inside the river to avoid new complication to the river regime such as clogging. - What I had done is; o To do a research on the client ideas about having a web wall between the piers of the bridge to avoid clogging. o To find existing researches to support client idea so that their propose bridge will be accepted by DBKL. o To study ways to avoid debris clogging at bridge piers. o To compile the researches into one simple presentation as instructed by engineer. o I learn about how river flow react with obstruction in the river especially the piers. I also learn that there were two major reaction around the piers which is scouring and clogging. o Scouring is the corrosion pattern around the obstruction happened by the deflection of water from the piers. o Debris clogging is the entrapment of debris such as woods and rubbish at the piers .

Date: Tuesday, 21 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: Contents: Identification of outlet in Sungai Klang.

WEEK NO: 2

To identify the outlet in Sungai Klang for ROL - Guided by engineer, we go to site along Sungai Klang - Base on the plan we had studied last week, we go to study area from Jalan Dang Wangi to Masjid Jamek to identify the outlet in the river. - During the survey, what I had done is; o Identify the type and the dimension of the outlet whether it is pipe, flap gate, flood gate, open culvert or drain. o We also identify the location of the outlet in the drawing. o To compile data collected during survey and report to engineer in charge. Observation - Some of the outlet is difficult to be identify as it was covered by concrete box such as sump. - There were a few illegal outlet done by the citizen. For example kitchen extension with pipe directly into the river. - Poor condition of the culvert maybe from the lack of the maintenance by responsible quarters. - Huge amount of rubbish flow along the river current. - There were also an outlet with unidentified source from under a bridge.

Date: Wednesday, 22 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: Identification of outlet in Sungai Gombak. Determination of Masjid Jamek catchment area.

WEEK NO: 2

Contents: Identification of outlet in sungai Gombak. - Revisit Sungai Gombak for reassess of the locations, numbers of outlet and their conditions for River of Live project o Compile back data including pictures before being forward to engineer in charge. Determination of Masjid Jamek catchment area. - Go out to Masjid Jamek to re confirm its catchment area based on the previous study. - We need to reconfirm the catchment area as there may be changes or addition on the drainage system in the area. - What I learned from the visit is; o Masjid Jamek catchment considered as urban area. Meaning it is a little bit complex than rural or suburban area (usually, urban catchment were determine by its drainage system). o It is a little difficult to identified the drain flow as most of the city drainages system were underground. o This is important so that we can provide estimated flow from the outlet in Masjid Jamek catchment, thus enable us design treatment plant with a suitable volume and capacity. - What I learned from the visit is; o As most of the drains were underground, we start by looking backward from the outlet. o From the map, we take note the direction of the water flow in the drainage whenever there are opening. o Area of the catchment determine by observing and tracing the drain water flow until the outlet. o Result we get is that the catchment area from the previous study is still valid to be use.

Daily Report
Date: Thursday, 23 May 2013 Objective(s) of the activities: Assisting engineers in Johor Barrage project.

WEEK NO: 2

Contents: Assisting engineers in Johor Barrage Project. - Johor Barrage projects aim to control the concentration of saline water in Sungai Johor. Sungai johor has 3 water intake stations. - Nowadays, there were problems regarding the last water intake station. The station operations had been effected badly by the increasing saline concentration. - The project proposed a barrage that will be closed for a certain period when there is high tide of the sea. - We assisting engineer to prepare slides on the projects. - What I had learned from this project is; o When river water flow is low, saline water can intrude the river. o When the barrage is finish however, there must be a strict standard operational procedure as the longer the barrage close the higher the concentration of saline water downstream of the river without freshwater to flush the saline water away. o This will affect the ecosystem of the river.
