Students will analyze and summarize primary and secondary sources to help determine the main causes of World War I. Students will understand the following definitions: Militarism, Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Alliance System.

Content Standards: RH.6-8.2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. RH.6-8.6: Identify aspects of a text that reveal an authors point of view of purpose (e.g., loaded language, inclusion or voidance of particular facts). RH.6-8.7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts. Materials/Resources/Technology: - Primary and Secondary Source Documents - Primary Source Pictures - Definitions of Militarism, Alliance System, Imperialism, and Nationalism. - Computer/projector for video o http://www.history.com/videos/causes-of-world-war-i#causes-of-world-war-i Time ~ 1 min. Start of Class: The teacher will start by setting the expectations for the class. How the students should act while others are talking, how the students should behave while working in groups, what signal will mean quiet, etc. The teacher will also state the objectives for the day. Students will analyze and summarize primary and secondary sources to help determine the main causes of World War I. Students will understand the following definitions: Militarism, Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Alliance System.

Introduction of Lesson: The teacher will open class by asking the students to answer the following question on a sheet of paper. What do you know about WWI? Why did it start? or What were the causes? After the students have a few minutes to write about what they know/think, the teacher will ask a few of the students to share with the class what they wrote. Lesson Instruction: The teacher will then transition from what the students said to a brief (2 min.) video from the History Channel explaining the four M.A.I.N. causes of WWI. The teacher will ask the students to pay close attention to the causes the video presents. The teacher will then ask the students to try to recall what causes the video explained. The teacher will then pass out the four short definitions of the four causes. Militarism, the Alliance System, Imperialism, and Nationalism. The teacher will call on students to read the definitions, and ask the class to explain it.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: ~15-20 min. The teacher will pass out a primary/secondary document and a picture to each group (already grouped by tables). The teacher will ask them to work together to decide which causes their document and picture exemplify. Each group will have a spokesperson briefly explain what their document/ picture is, what causes do they exemplify, and how they came to that conclusion. After each group presents, the teacher will replay the video to reinforce material. The teacher will pause the video at key points to highlight the four main causes discussed. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: After the video ends, the teacher will ask the students to restate the four M.A.I.N. causes of WWI. The teacher will also point out an easy way for them to remember. Militarism, Alliance System, Imperialism, and Nationalism. Then, the teacher will ask the students to think about the following question. Which cause do you think had the biggest impact in causing WWI?
